Jenny Saville paints women who are
painfully beautiful, women who overflow
with fat and emotions. An Englishwoman,
Saville is one of those artists who stand out
of the collective and break into a personal
realm. Among thousands of painting, her
work is what remains in memory. She doesn’t do much to please the public, she just
places them in front of a completed work; at

of 15 photographs entitled Closed Contact.

was given the name Lisa, and belonged to
the Gherardini family who were land owners
between Greve and Castellina; the same
land where great men, like Giovanni da
Verrazzano, the first to navigate into the bay
of New York, grew up before the Apple fell
from the tree. A real woman would marry
with older men, love was not a woman’s
business, daughters would stand silently,
while families would talk with the groom,
while her hand would shake but her face
showed nothing. Lisa Gherardini married
the rich silk trader Francesco Del Giocondo,
who kindly compensated her patience with
him by leaving her everything when he died
in 1538. A real woman meets love at least
once in her life. Lisa posed for Leonardo Da
Vinci, a man who probably didn’t love
women, who nevertheless fell in love with
her smile. For almost all the 1900’s, that
enigmatic smile was seen as a sign of an
obscure joy, the learned maestro had made
a self-portrait of himself smiling while
already thinking of the trick he was playing
on his viewers. With a simple gesture, an
artist added a mustache onto the painting,
underlying its ambiguity. But the Mona Lisa
was a real woman. That smile, while awakening a sort of enigmatic happiness, also
suggested an inconsolable sadness, perhaps with an eerie feeling of knowing
she was the only one who really loved.

Let’s begin with your experiences as a comics artist,
from ZeroZero to Weasel...
The editor of ZeroZero has asked
me to continue working with them
after Suckle was published. So I
suggested turning my new story into
series in Weasel. One of the things
which bores me the most when
drawing comics is that you’re always
forced to draw the same characters
in the same way, so I decided that
the first five in Weasel would have 3
or 4 different stories (mine, of
course) using different styles..So
there you have Ripple, Television
Program x-32b, Encyclopedia Nonsensica, a series of illustrations and
oil-painted covers.

That’s how the sixth issue of
Weasel turned into the painting collection, Overbite...
Actually I felt like I had no more sto-
ries to turn into comics. I believe I said
all I had to say in those five Weasel
issues. At the time, I was preparing an
art show, and asked Fantagraphics if
they wanted to publish a catalogue..
and they actually pushed me to publish an actual art book.
Let’s talk about Ripple - A
predilection for Tina... it is a
powerful story that sucks
you in... How was it born and
why did you use such a
“dirty” style?
I used this particular style cuz I
wanted everything to seem more
immediate, so that the reader would
concentrate on the story and the
character’s emotions rather than on
the tecnical style. This rough style
gives more strength to the story,
which is actually fruit of earlier times
and of my first love. The truth is, I
wanted to describe my teenage
obsessions, a diary of sorts, but it
would have resulted in thousands of
pages, so I wrote Ripple instead,
where in 100 pages, I was able to
collect the essence of my emotions,
even though not representing the
real truth...
Future projects..
Painting, drawing and making books
are the things which will always make
me happy. They are my purest passions. Although I would like someone
to make a movie out of Ripple..
What inspires you the most?
Women...and cartoon, toys, and
nature. The artists which I admire
the most are Mark Ryden, Richard
Scary, Balthus...
If your girls could talk, what
would they say?
