Jacobs & Honor Thy Frenchman
Capture Buc Days Rodeo Title
By Tanya Randall
The WPRA’s current leading rookie Taylor Jacob of Carmine,
Texas, continued her winning ways with a Buc Days Rodeo Championship, worth $5,387. She won the $13,500-added, one-run rodeo,
held April 18-21 in Corpus Christi, Texas, aboard her 8-year-old
gelding Honor Thy Frenchman (“Bo”).
“I didn’t realize how small it was,” said Jacob of the American
Bank Center, “because I didn’t go up there before my run. My mom
had text me, telling me that the arena was little. She said, max two
strides between the first and second barrel. When I actually got in
there, “I was like ‘oh, it’s really small.’”
The arena was small enough, in fact, that her winning time on the
long-strided buckskin was a 13.4.
“Bo did great,” she said of the Frenchmans Feature, Jet Of
Honor bred-gelding. “He turned the first barrel really, really good. I
feel like if we can get our first barrel it really sets up the rest of our
run. He turned the first barrel great and the second was really good.
The third barrel was good and he kind of looked up on the way
home because they have a screen up above the alleyway. Other than
that, it was a pretty good run.”
After lucrative wins at the Fort Worth Stock Show in Texas and
Dixie Nationals in Jackson, Miss., this winter, Jacob has spent most
of her spring focusing on getting qualified for the College National
Finals Rodeo (CNFR). A talented all-around hand, Jacob has never
qualified in the barrel racing…until this year.
“We have one college rodeo left this weekend in Wharton,” said
the senior communications major at Texas A&M University, “but I
already have the college finals made in the barrels. I need to win the
breakaway to have enough points in the all-around to rope at the
college finals too.”
Luckily a course load of mostly online classes has allowed her to
rodeo much of her final undergraduate semester.
“I have finance project and a final in my English class on May 3,”
she noted. “Then I’m pretty much done. I’m actually up at Guymon
the day of my final, so I’m taking it online.”
After graduation, she’ll stay close to home before heading to
Casper, Wyo., for the CNFR. Jacob will also pick up a few pro rodeos on the way to Casper, and afterwards the summer run of pro
rodeos gets kicked off with the Reno Rodeo.
“I’ve just been trying to get done with school so I haven’t been to
many places really,” said Jacob, who is sponsored by Tres Rios Silver
and Classic Equine. “I think I might be at 16 or 17 (rodeos). I’m not

By virtue of her two major wins this winter and position within
the upper echelons of the Top 15, Jacob is also qualified for the
Calgary Stampede, which qualifies for the WPRA World Standings
this year.
However, after mix up with her Rodeo Austin-entry this spring,
she called twice just to make sure on Calgary.
“It was weird because I entered Austin thinking that I wouldn’t
get in at all,” she explained. “When I got in, I was excited because
I didn’t think I would. I was pumped. My family and friends all got
tickets for the night that I was up. Then the WPRA called and said
I wasn’t supposed to get in. They had counted the money I had
won at Fort Worth and they shouldn’t have. I was bummed, but I
thought everything happens for the reason.”
Her positive outlook has given her an impressive lead in the
rookie-of-the-year standings and placed her in strong contention for
her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo berth.

Ex-PRCA member killed
in West, Texas, explosion
Former PRCA bareback rider William “Buck” Uptmor was
among the 14 people who were killed – most of them first responders – in the explosion that destroyed a fertilizer plant in West, Texas,
late on April 17.
Uptmor, 44, was trying to help a friend by getting some horses
out of a pasture near the plant when the building exploded, injuring
200 people and leveling a five-block area of the town.
Also lost in the blast were West volunteer firefighters Robert and
Doug Snokhous, who are cousins of former PRCA bull rider Gary
Snokhous. Sixty people are still listed as missing.
Uptmor’s nephew Reagan Uptmore, 17, told the San Antonio
Express-News that his uncle was the kind of man who always
helped out in emergencies and was among the first to respond when
word spread that there was a fire at the West Fertilizer Company.
“He went in at the wrong time,” Reagan Uptmore said. “He was
a cowboy and he died with his boots on. He would do anything for
anybody. He would swim across the ocean to help you.”
The former rodeo contestant, who won checks at Texas PRCA
rodeos in Fort Worth, Hearne and Fairfield in 1990 while a permit
holder, was well known in West, a community of about 2,800. He
coached youth baseball and was on the board of the West Fair and
Rodeo Association.
He was the drummer in the family band, Billy Uptmor and the
Makers.
“You could look in the West phone book and literally pick any
number, and they would know him,” family friend Shelly Moore
told the Dallas Morning News.
Six-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier Larry Ferguson lives 5.7
miles southwest of the blast site and says he lost five or six friends
to the explosion, including Uptmor, whom he had known since he
moved to West 18 years ago from Oklahoma.
“Buck gave me my first job out of rodeo,” Ferguson said. “I
worked for him for about eight months, building fences, porches.
He was the guy in town you called if you needed a job done like
that. Everybody in town knew him.
“We were far enough away from the explosion that we (the Ferguson family) were all OK, but it affects us because we know those
people. We know some of the first responders who died and we
had a lot of good friends who lost their homes.”
Uptmor is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons. Uptmor
is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons.
A memorial website has been posted on Facebook (www.facebook.com/WestFirefighters#!/WestFirefighters) to honor those
killed or injured in the blast. Country music legend Willie Nelson is
donating all proceeds from an upcoming concert in Austin, Texas,
to the West Volunteer Fire Department, according to a press state-
ment released April 18.
Justin Maass, the 2012 tie-down roping reserve world
champion, pledged to donate his earnings at the Bryan (Texas)
Breakfast Lions Club PRCA Rodeo to the West relief fund and he
ended up earning a share of first place ($1,195). When he tweeted
about his plan before the rodeo, he asked people to consider matching his contribution.
“Two guys tweeted back and said they were in,” Maass said, “so
we’re sending about $3,600 to West. The offer is still out there …
anybody who wants to put up matching funds is encouraged to do
that. They need the help down there.”
Monetary donations may be mailed to Pointwest Bank, 200 W.
Oak St., or the State National Bank, 100 N. Main St. in West, or can
be delivered online at www.pointwestbank.com via PayPal. Donations can be specifically targeted to several entities: Victims of the
West Explosion General Fund, West Independent School District,
Knights of Columbus and the West Rest Haven Nursing Home,
which suffered extensive damage and had to evacuate 133 residents.

Erickson Passes at Age 75
Legendary rodeo reporter Dwayne Erickson, a two-time winner
of the PRCA Excellence in Print Journalism Award (2003, 2012)
and an inductee in both the Canadian Professional Rodeo Hall of
Fame and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, died early this morning
in a Calgary, Alberta, hospice. He was 75.
Erickson first started covering rodeo as a cub reporter for the
Edmonton Journal more than 50 years ago, learning the ropes from
the likes of rodeo legends Harry Vold, Reg Kesler, Herman Linder
and Keith Hyland before heading off on an adventure that would
carry him to press rooms all over North America for the Journal
and the Calgary Herald.
He would establish himself as the preeminent rodeo journalist
in Canada, his work published not only in the newspapers that employed him but also in the CPRA’s magazine, the ProRodeo Sports
News and many other publications. He was universally respected
for his wealth of knowledge, his skills as a writer and his unflagging
work ethic. “Not to take any respect from other writers, but most
people aren’t that familiar with the ins and outs of rodeo,” Canadian
bull rider Scott Schiffner told the Calgary Herald. “Dwayne is, and
that’s why he can put that touch on it, and make people feel like
they’re actually there when they read his stories.”

Bottom’s Up--Trula Churchill & A Streak
Of Rita Celebrate Dual California Wins
By Tanya Randall
Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Trula Churchill
doubled her season’s earnings in one weekend with victories at the
$15,000-added Red Bluff Roundup and $4,500-added Lakeside
Pro Rodeo, both held April 19-21 in California. The former school
teacher from Valentine, Neb., and her homegrown superstar A
Streak Of Rita (“Worm”) pocketed $7,605 at the two rodeos, moving them within striking distance of the Top 15.
“Having a big winter isn’t as important as it used to be,” noted
Churchill, who picked up “little” checks all winter long. “There’s
more money spread out all year it seems. As long as you have some
money won to start off the summer, you have a chance.”
Churchill, who won $5,074 at Red Bluff and $2,531 at Lakeside,
didn’t start her Spring Run off as planned with her truck breaking down on the way to Logandale, Nev. However, her momentary
pause allowed her to correct an entering mistake that would have
cost her.
“I had a mistake entering Lakeside,” she explained. “I was supposed to be up Friday night. I was sitting on the side of the road
waiting on the tow truck and a friend to come pick my horses up,
and I was looking at my entry book and I realized that the slack
at Red Bluff was on Friday and not Thursday. I kind of hit panic
mode. I pulled the trade list up and made one call, and the girl
traded me at Lakeside the day before the trade deadline.”
The trade allowed her to sandwich Lakeside between her two
runs at Red Bluff, but she had to do well on her first run at Red
Bluff to ensure she’d run on Sunday and not an earlier performance, which might necessitate another trade.

“My first run at Red Bluff I had it in my mind that I really
needed to do good because I didn’t want to have to find a trade,”
she laughed. “When I was warming [Worm] up, he was just playing
around which isn’t uncommon for him. Usually when he does that
he does do good. He just tried his little butt off my first run. I was

pretty confident that I’d made a pretty good run. I didn’t take a
whole lot of time to reflect on it; I just loaded up and headed to
Lakeside.”
Churchill had reservations about leaving Red Bluff for Lakeside,
but knew she needed to make the trip.
“I kind of thought it was meant for me to go,” she said. “If I
hadn’t traded into that perf Saturday night, I might not have tried to
go down there. Since I had to turn out of Oakdale last week, I felt
like I had to go.”
At Lakeside, Worm, a son of leading sire A Streak Of Fling out
of Jetta Rita, an NFR bulldogging horse, was back at his antics.
“They have an intermission before the team roping and they let
you ride in the arena,” she explained. “All the fans line up along the
fence and you can sign autographs. It’s a pretty neat little experience
there at Lakeside. I was riding him around in the arena and he was
being silly and showing off. I was thinking we really need to hustle
across to the second because it’s right off of the bucking chutes.
When he took off for the second, I thought forget about hustling
him you better hustle yourself to keep up with him! He was just on
this weekend.”
After Lakeside, Churchill and Worm had the daunting drive back
for her second run at Red Bluff.
Lakeside is near San Diego in southern California while Red Bluff
is in northern California.
“I think it’s 650 miles,” noted Churchill. “In California, you’re
only supposed to drive 55 if you’re pulling a trailer. I left Lakeside at
10 o’clock Saturday night, and I did have a bulldogger friend drive
back with me. We got back to Red Bluff at noon and the rodeo
started at 1:30.”
Churchill was concerned that the trailer ride would take some of
the starch out of Worm.
“He didn’t have a chance to lay down and sleep, and he loves to
take a nap,” she said. “Warming up, he was kind of laid back and
calm. When they set the barrels up, he knew it was time. I don’t
think my second run was a smooth as my first, but he was really trying hard. He really put out a lot of effort on Sunday.”

Churchill’s plan is to be back at the WNFR in Las Vegas as well as

“My horse has been working good,” she said, “but it just hadn’t
been my day to win first until this weekend. I try not to stress too
much if he’s working good and trying. Some days it’s just not your
day. You just have to wait for it to turn around, and hopefully it

Rice Streaks to Big Bucks in Bowman
By Julie Mankin
Despite nasty blizzard conditions in North Dakota, barrel racers
came in droves to the 7th Annual Triple Turn Classic in Bowman.
With $1,800 plus great prizes advertised added to the Open, the
United Barrel Racing Association-sanctioned race drew more than
350 entries each of the two days, plus 100 youth entries and dozens
of peewees.
“When I stepped out of my trailer there that first morning it
was blizzarding so bad I could hardly see,” said Rayna Rice, who
won the 1D on Sunday. “The snow died down but I think the high
was in the 20s both days. I couldn’t decide if we were dedicated or
stupid.”
Rice had made the three-hour trek from her home in Sidney,
Mont., because she does it every year without fail – the Triple Turn
Classic is one of the best races in the north all year.
“Chad and Ali Miller do such an awesome job,” she said of the
Millers’ production in Bowman. “They’re good people. And they
rattled off more than 400 runs each day with the ground staying
really good.”
On Saturday, Army officer Tracy Bridwell made just as long a trip
from Bismarck, N.D., to clock the fast time of the entire weekend
– a 14.974 – on Doc’s Royal Win for $973. She calls the 7-year-old
mare “Mini” because she’s a “mini me” of her mother, Bridwell’s
old barrel mare “Sage.”
“I’d only ran her one other time this winter, the weekend prior,”
said Bridwell. “I took her down to get her through a pattern before
the Triple Turn and ran a 16.9 but tipped one. I wasn’t sure if that
was a fluke or if she was really running that fast, so I was real excited after Bowman.”
The next day during Sunday’s race, Mini clocked another smoking
15.008 – after Bridwell let her coast because they barely caught the
Barrel Racing Report
first barrel – which would have won the race again.
In junior high school, Bridwell had learned to compete on an old
mare named Doc Lee Clark (“Sara”). After showing the mare in
Western Pleasure and English Equitation, Bridwell began roping on
her in high school. Eventually the family bred her to Fixin To Win –
a great barrel racing stallion owned by John and Cindy Baltezore.
The result was Docs Win Te, who became a nice barrel horse for
Bridwell. But she was “forever coming in heat,” and when Bridwell
won a stud fee to CC Royal Red at a silent auction for just $20, she
bred her to get Mini (CC Royal Red is by the Top Moon/Rebel
Cause stallion Casady Casanova and out of a Go Man Go granddaughter).
Such a big win is sweet for Bridwell, who’s a mobilization readiness officer full-time with the North Dakota Army National Guard.
In February, she had to mobilize her husband, Travis, who will be
gone almost until Christmas. They have two sons, 6 and 8 years old.
“I work full-time and lose at least one weekend a month,” said
Bridwell, who’d only had a chance to ride Mini for two weeks
before the event. “I can’t be competitive in organizations because I
can’t always compete on weekends. I just try to find bigger jackpots,
and I pay a lot of late fees.”
Luckily, since Bismarck has been bombarded with snow this
spring, Bridwell has an indoor riding area in which to leg up horses.
As a full-time working mother, she also has plans to train several
more horses, including a three-quarter sister to Mini.
Meanwhile at Bowman, Rice was there with three horses – her
futurity horse and two 7-year-olds. Two had never run in competition before, and the other, “Streak,” hadn’t made a competitive run
since July 3, 2012.
On Sunday, she came near the “cruising” time turned in by

Bridwell but for the penalty. Rice and A Streakin Easy (“Streak”)
clocked a 15.183 to win the 1D for $960, plus she won the WPRA
sidepot for another $302. A paycheck of $1,262 hadn’t looked as
likely the day before, when Streak got a little too excited in the alley
(though he still ran in the 1D).
The 7-year-old roan Streak is a son of A Streak Of Fling, which
is what Rice wanted back in 2008 when she bought him. But he’s
also out of Easy April Lena, by Doc O Dynamite crossed on
the Easy Jet granddaughter Easy April Bar. That makes Streak a
nephew of Rachael Myllymaki’s great NFR horse, Easy Does It
Doc (“Scott”), who was a full brother to Easy April Lena.
“Grady Lockhart and I are good friends and he’s always down
there helping Brian (Fulton) at the sale, so I called and asked him
to pick me out a 2-year-old,” said Rice. “He figured I might like this
one, and he was right. Grady found me a great one.”
Streak was running well at futurities his 5-year-old year, but virtually
as soon as he got started the following season, he pulled a suspensory ligament in his hind leg and spent 10 months out of commission.
And even during his futurity year, Rice was so busy running The
Cattle-ac – her bar/restaurant in Sidney – that she didn’t have as
much time for him as she’d like. The influx of oil-field workers has
been good for the bar business but bad for the barrel business.
She doesn’t venture far from home, which she shares with her
husband, Park, and three stepkids Bridger, Ryder and Soda. And she
can’t venture far from the bar. An accountant by education, Rice
does the books there and helps with payroll for the Prewitt family’s
cattle business.
Still, the kids will be grown in five or six years; the Rices just built
an indoor arena; and The Cattle-ac is finally for sale. Rice, who
qualified for the 2001 NFR on a mare named Hot Rod, tries to
never say “never” to the prospect of going back, but she won’t go
to more than 30 or 40 rodeos a year again, she said.
Besides Streak, Rice has pretty well always bought her horses
from Judy Myllymaki, so she knows they’re started right.
“Judy’s a goddess of barrel racing in my eyes,” said Rice. “I rode
with her for 13 years.”
While she doubts she’ll buy any more 2-year-olds, Rice’s protégé
is rolling right along, so she’ll take him to some more jackpots this
month and then rodeo on him in Montana this summer. Rice’s last
rodeo horse, Chucky, was named Montana Circuit Horse of the
Year in 2010 before he was sold to Chloe Hoovestal.

Headin’ For Home
I
heard a phrase the other day that caught and held my attention for quite a while. It was, “Are you a dull display of Jesus,
practicing lifeless religion?” My answer was, “I hope not!” But
God, being so good, kept bringing it up and while riding yesterday….SHAZAM!...I got a word picture on that statement!
Historically speaking, I really don’t do well with push horses (ones
that you have to keep asking to do something, they rarely volunteer
much effort). I watch other barrel racers that whip and spur and
wonder just how in the world they manage it! And the ones that
can reach down in a run and set a barrel up while going around it
are amazing! Truthfully, I don’t do those things because… well…. I
can’t!
I have been known to whip MYSELF with an over and under rope!
When wearing spurs I have jabbed my horse at just the WRONG
time and hurled us by the barrel! And forget leaning off the side! I
REALLY prefer to stay on! If you use your tools wrong, the horse
can become dull and unresponsive to your cues! So I ride horses
that love to run and I endeavor to teach them right the first time.
You can see where this is going. Dull and lifeless religion is what
we have when we believe anything or ANYBODY contrary to what
the Bible says. For example….do you think that sickness is from
God? Have you ever read I Pet. 2:24? Has someone told you that
it is okay to be broke? Did you compare that statement to 3 Jn.
2? And if something bad has happened to you, did you buy into
someone telling you that God is trying to teach you something?
You should read John 10:10 or James 1:13. When you put your eyes
on the Word of God and all He promises you, you will no longer be
easily swayed into believing a dull, lifeless religion. But instead you
will be on fire for Him, fierce in your faith, resisting the devil in any
area of your life that has any form of lack in it!! You’ll be responsive to His leading and you WILL NOT FAIL! Winning barrel
races is fun! Winning in life is BETTER!
My friends….. go with God……..
