Montebello Celebrates 96th Anniversary Parade
Residents are talking about recent Southern California Edison (SCE)
activity in their neighborhoods and are wondering what's going on.
"We've dealt with planned outages, parking restrictions on certain
days, and temporary road closures," said one resident. "What's it all
about?"
According to SCE, "the City of Montebello is faced with an aging
infrastructure that continues to challenge the reliability of SCE’s circuits.
As a result, several projects in Montebello are either underway, or have
recently been completed, as part of SCE's multi-million dollar
maintenance and infrastructure improvement project across its
50,000-square-mile territory."
So far this year in Montebello, SCE has replaced 67 wooden utility poles,
rebuilt one 16 kV circuit which serves over 2,500 customers, and to help
reduce future outages, upgraded seven reliability circuits.
"The installation of new equipment and upgrades minimize the
likelihood of unanticipated and extended outages that could result in
a longer service interruption affecting a greater number of customers,"
said an SCE spokesperson. "Southern California Edison is engaged in
continuous infrastructure improvement projects to maintain service
reliability, and expand and improve the local distribution grid that
services customers to provide safe and continuous reliable electricity
across SCE’s vast service territory."
In addition, the replacement of two underground vaults is scheduled
to be completed by the end of the year.

I first set foot in the District Attorney’s office over 25 years ago. Every day since then, my mission has been to pursue the truth, to uphold
the law, to ensure the safety of the entire community and to fight for justice from the position of an advocate.
As a native of Montebello, it has been my privilege to carry out this mission throughout L.A. County. In prosecuting a wide variety of
cases throughout my career encompassing everything from domestic violence, gangs, major narcotics, identity theft, DUI’s, child abuse,
murder and as Supervisor of the two busiest area courts in Los Angeles County, I have learned that this job demands an eclectics skill set
and a vigorous work ethic.
I am now, however, ready to take on a new role in the courtroom - that of a Superior Court Judge. It is my earnest hope that, by drawing
from my own life experiences and as a 25- year veteran of the judicial stem, I will be able to bring integrity, discipline, respect, humility,
patience, empathy, fairness, fortitude and incisive judgment to the bench.
I humbly ask you to help me secure my seat by voting for me, Javier Perez, for Superior Court Judge on November 8th

CITY TO PARTICIPATE
IN FIRE PREVENTION WEEK
By Anne Donofrio-Holter
Contributing Writer
Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10
Years,” is the theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week set for
October 9 - 15.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the
public has many misconceptions when it comes to smoke alarms,
which may put them at increased risk in case of a home fire. Few
know how old their smoke alarm is or how often it should be replaced.
"To check the age of your smoke alarm, look for the manufacture date
located on the back of the alarm," said Montebello Fire Chief Dan
Amador. "If older than ten years, it should be replaced."
According to an NFPA report, in 20% of all US homes equipped with
smoke alarms, the smoke alarms are not working.
Mark 9:23 "Everything is possible for one who believes."
"Never assume because you have a smoke alarm in your home that
it is working properly," said Amador. "Smoke alarms require regular
testing to ensure your family is protected in the event a fire breaks
out."
On September 10th, the Boy Scouts of America Troop 330, Pack 45 and
Pack 850 honored our local Heroes, The Montebello Firefighters and The
Montebello Police Officers.
Partnered with the Montebello Lions and the Montebello Elks they made
baskets with goodies for each of the departments as a small token of their
gratitude for all that they do for our community.
The Montebello Fire Department will commemorate Fire Prevention
Week with tours of the fire department, 600 N. Montebello Boulevard,
on Sunday, October 9, from 9 am until noon.
According to the NFPA, in 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued
the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation. Expanded to a
week-long observance in 1922, Fire Prevention Week is the longest
running public health and safety observance on record and focuses
on a specific topic each year.

LET’S CATCH ‘EM ALL TOGETHER!
keep you energized to find more Pokémon alright!
by Alyssa Martinez
Contributing Writer
The Shops At Montebello team hosted an enter to win promotion with
Pokémon Go while partnering up with retailers for raffles, giveaways, and
more. Our Montebello mall was lit with charisma and enthusiasm from
young children looking to catch Bulbasaur’s and Charmander’s to young
adults with a little hope to catch a fan favorite, Dragonite as well.
An excited line of Pokémon trainers eager to receive their wrist bands and
enter in the raffle, was curved all along center court causing attention and
interest to spark in others.
“Last time I came to the mall I found a Dragonite but I couldn’t catch it so I’m
praying I can find it again today” says local, Johnathan Gonzales as he waits
patiently in line for his wrist band. People of all ages were able to participate
to win some of the great prizes available.
Winners of the raffles were rewarded either a 40 dollar gift card to Olive
Garden or a 100 dollar gift card to Starbucks. That sure is a lot of coffee to
get a BRIGHTER,

However, what most people seemed to be interested in was the special
Pokémon plush Bear being raffled by Build-A-Bear Workshop. The winner of
the raffle was 9 year old Chris who was accompanied by his family. Everyone who joined the contest was given free snacks and treats as well as free
Pikachu trading cards! More prizes were received through email as well.
Everybody wins!
The event was wholesome, friendly and was fun for the whole family. “This
event really brought a lot of families together today” says a mother of three
young boys. The event even got a lot of the older participants to reminisce
on their childhood. “Yeah, if you’re a little older there’s a lot of nostalgia”
Johnathan adds.
Towards the end of the event, everyone left happy with their Pokéboxes full
of Pokémon and super cool prizes.
I can definitely say I enjoyed this event. Especially after seeing every one of
all ages enjoy spending time with one another for the same purpose of
catching ‘em all together!

of the Continental Navy and the forerunner to an emerging maritime supremacy. And
from these humble beginnings, the world's most powerful naval force was born.
Today, with thousands of qualified Sailors, modern ships, and high-performance aircraft
deployed worldwide, the U.S. Navy is a globally-spanned armed force capable of
winning wars, deterring aggression, and maintaining freedom of the sea. It projects
maritime power to protect and advance our vital national interests, and sustain
American leadership wherever and whenever necessary. Thus, it stands at the
ready--twenty-four-seven--with a mandate to assert combat readiness where it matters,
when it matters.
USS Constitution: “Old Ironsides”
All hands on deck! Now hear this: On October 13th, the U.S. Navy proudly celebrates
241 years sustaining life, liberty, and the pursuit of those who threaten it. With intrepid
maturity, our Navy traces its roots back to the privateers that waged tactical raids
against English shipping at the onset of the American Revolution. Thus, it remains rich
in gallant history and courageous heritage spanning wars and conflicts that have forged
our nation’s path.
On this date, in 1775, the Continental Congress directed the outfitting of a small flotilla
designed to attack supply ships replenishing British naval forces in North America. To
accomplish this mission, it approved the acquisition and manning of comparatively
smaller and less effective frigates, brigs, sloops, and schooners with the objective of
opposing uncontested British sea power. This monumental effort marked the beginning

HOW TO AVOID A LEGAL NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
by Gia L. Pacheco, Esq.
The Law Offices of
George B. Pacheco & Associates
If you made a trip to a discount store in
mid-August you surely would have noticed the
Halloween costumes and décor already up for
display. As I perused the items available for
that frightful night, I found many inexpensive
decorations for the Halloween festivities.
Unfortunately, that sentiment was short lived.
Maybe the result of an occupational hazard, I
then started to think of how many of those
items made of cheap plastic and the highly
flammable costumes could be dangerous and
lead to a legal nightmare. According to the
Center for Disease Control (CDC) Halloween
is one of the most dangerous holidays listing
hazards such as flammable costumes, trip and
falls, dog bites and Auto accidents involving
pedestrians as the most common Halloween
horrors. The CDC has a whole webpage dedicated to Halloween safety. But do not scare
easily - with a little bit of planning and awareness, you are surely able to have a safe and
fun filled Halloween.
If you are planning to host trick-or-treaters
and/or have a backyard Halloween party, it is
always safe to make sure you screen for hazards beforehand so that you can prepare. You
may want to consider repairing that jagged
fence or filling that hole in your lawn before
you invite people over to avoid injury to
others– you may be liable if you are on notice
which could lead to a potential ‘premises liability’ claim. Make sure the path leading to your
front door is well lit and avoid having trip hazards blocking the path. Beware of unattended
candles and make sure they are away from
flammable objects. Keep your pets indoors or
in a kennel. If you will be hosting a large
Halloween party on your property consider
upgrading your insurance policy. Basic homeowner’s insurance policies may not cover you
against medical liabilities, and may subject you
to personal liability. It is worth it to avoid a terrifying experience.
Planning on attending a haunted house attraction? Last year the California Court of Appeal
held that, in the absence of unusually reckless
conduct, the proprietors of a “haunted house”
attraction were not liable for injuries that
patrons may suffer due to having been
extremely scared. In the case Griffin v. The
Haunted Hotel, Inc., (2015) 242 Cal. App. 4th
490, the injury arose out of the Plaintiff’s visit to
one of the defendant’s haunted house attractions in 2011. After passing what he and his
friends believed to be the end of the haunted
encounter, Griffin was surprisingly met by an
actor wielding a chainless chainsaw who
began chasing him. Griffin fled and eventually
fell and injured his wrist. The Trial court
dismissed the case holding, in summary, that
one who enters into a haunted house
“assumes the risk”. The Appeals court agreed
that this rule applied here. They stated “[T]he
point of The Haunted Trail is to scare people,
and the risk that someone will be scared and
react by running away cannot be eliminated
without changing the basic character of the
activity. As the trial court aptly noted, ‘[W]ho
would want to go to a haunted house that is
not scary?'” If you host a ‘haunted house’ and
plan to invite the public, first make sure to
check with local city rules if a permit is required
and consider having guests sign a hold harmless agreement or waiver of liability including
the common warnings and disclaimers.
Last, make sure to slow down for
Trick-or-Treaters to avoid any accidents. For

MEET PAUL PARZIK: NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MONTEBELLO-COMMERCE YMCA
Paul Parzik began working with the YMCA in Central Florida in 1986 directly out of graduate school at Vanderbilt University. His
Y career began with the Orlando association, where he served as a Program Director for three years, after which time he accepted
another role as an Associate Director in Sarasota for four years, then he returned to Central Florida again to serve as an Executive
Director at another operation in that Association to cap his first ten year term of service with the Y.
In 1996, Paul continued working with youth at another company- the Disney Institute, before moving to California nearly 20 years
ago to teach language arts and social studies at Pacoima Middle School in the LAUSD system. while simultaneously tried his hand
at screenwriting. His endeavors in writing resulted in the sale of a big budget, feature length script that was not produced, and
creating a dozen more screenplays as well as several teleplays, some of which were optioned or written on Spec. Starting a new
family in 2000 prompted Paul’s desire to return to Y service again, when he served as Membership Director with the North Valley
Y, then at two other operations where he provided leadership again as an Executive Director.
After 17 years of cumulative service to the Y, Paul left the Y, once again for a 9 year “hiatus”, this time to help with the family
business and to enable him to better manage his schedule to spend more time with his young children during those formative
years of early childhood.
Now, with his children in middle school and high school, when less parental involvement is coveted (by the kids if not their dad),
he recently returned to Y work again this past March, when he served as an Interim Executive Director at the Santa Anita Y prior
to being reassigned in the same capacity with the Montebello-Commerce Y beginning on July 1st.
Culminating a lifetime of service and commitment to developing youth, including his own children, Paul is pleased to return to the
Y once again to serve the mission of this important, transformative agency once again, in whatever capacity he is called to do so.

• About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop
invasive breast cancer over the course of her
lifetime.
• In 2015, an estimated 231,840 new cases of
invasive breast cancer are expected to be
diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 60,290
new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
• About 40,290 women in the U.S. are expected to
die in 2015 from breast cancer, though death rates
have been decreasing since 1989. Women under 50
have experienced larger decreases. These
decreases are thought to be the result of treatment
advances, earlier detection through screening, and
increased awareness.
• A woman’s risk of breast cancer approximately
doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother,
sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with
breast cancer. Less than 15% of women who get
breast cancer have a family member diagnosed
with it.
• About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who
have no family history of breast cancer. These occur
due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of
the aging process and life in general, rather than
inherited mutations.

MEET JOHN P. THROPAY, M.D.
Hyperthermia is a therapy used to heat tumors. Research has
shown that heat can damage cancer cells while also increasing
the effect of radiation therapy in treating some tumors that are
recurrent or progressive despite conventional therapy.
As Founder, Medical Director, and
President of Beverly Oncology and
Imaging (BOI) Medical Group, Dr.
John P. Thropay’s mission is to
provide
the
best
possible
outcomes for cancer patients. His
commitment to excellence is
reflected in his medical team’s
unparalleled innovation in clinical
skill, turnkey technology applications, and professional management.
While it has been known for hundreds of years that fevers can
kill cancer cells, only recently has technology been developed
that can control and focus heat specifically on tumors. Hyperthermia treatments are typically given in Radiation Oncology
departments several times a week either before or after radiation therapy. Each treatment session lasts for approximately
one hour.
Dr. Thropay opened his first radiation oncology center in 1980 and
has continued serving the Montebello community for over thirty
years. He began his practice as a pioneer of Brachytherapy. This
breakthrough therapy allows for the direct irradiation of cancerous
tissue. Brachytherapy can be used in place of, or as a complement to,
external beam irradiation.

"I’m very pleased with the staff. They’re very sweet, kind, respectful
and make me feel comfortable," said Sonia Contreras.

Since then he has expanded the operation to seven outpatient clinics
throughout Southern California and has earned distinction among the
first freestanding outpatient clinics to be Joint Commission certified,
thereby earning the same distinction for its safety guidelines and
protocols as other larger and prestigious medical institutions.
Through these ventures, his mission has remained the same: To
provide the highest-quality cancer treatment care through a comprehensive set of wellness programs and support groups for his patients
and their families and for the region’s multicultural population, regardless of socioeconomic background.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH
The
idea of facing Breast Cancer is one that
can frighten any woman. According to the
American cancer society, Breast Cancer is the
most common cancer diagnosed in women in
the United States, after skin cancer, and is the
second leading cause of cancer death. Statistically, a woman’s chances of having invasive
breast cancer during her life are 1 in 8. The
odds are serious.
However, there are services right in our community which can help detect, treat and support
women who have concerns about breast
cancer. Beverly Hospital’s Women’s Pavilion
and Breast Center, for example, offers digital
mammography, breast ultrasound, biopsy,
bone density scan and other services. Women
without health insurance or with limited resources can many times receive services through
grants or government programs.
Alice Baldwin, a breast cancer survivor and employee of Beverly Hospital, shared “the experience was both extremely frightening and completely empowering. I received excellent care
from wonderful people and learned how to
take charge of my health.” Although Alice has
been cancer clear for nearly five years, she
continues to see her doctor every four months
and stays on top of her annual check-ups.
What Alice would like other women to know is
that an annual mammogram can save your life.
Ironically, she almost skipped the one that detected her breast cancer diagnosis. She will
never skip another check-up.

screenings or to schedule an appointment at

Center, call (323) 725-5017.

you would want to drink tea, water, or coffee and

is recommended to drink no more than 1 drink per

Cancer is defined as the uncontrollable growth of
cells in the body that can occur almost anywhere in
the body. Breast cancer in particular is one of the
most common ones in women, second only to skin
related cancers. It can also appear in men, but it is
much less common. According to The American
Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women, or 12%, will
develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.
They have estimated that in 2015 alone, there will
be about 232,000 new cases of invasive breast
cancer diagnosed in women, and about 40,300
women will die from breast cancer. It is also the
second leading cause of cancer death in women,
second only to lung cancer. This is a scary thought,
but there are ways to help lower the likelihood of
developing the cancer, as well as ways to treat it.
The best way to reduce the chance of developing
breast cancer would be to initiate lifestyle modifications. These will not completely get rid of the risk of
cancer, but they will surely lessen the chance. A
woman would want to maintain a heathy diet as
well as a healthy weight. For the diet, it is recommended to eat foods and drinks that will help you
maintain a healthy weight. This includes many
RX
Another way to limit the chances of developing
breast cancer would be exercise. Adults should get
at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75
minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week.
Children and teens should get at least 1 hour of
moderate or vigorous intensity activity each day. It
sounds like a lot, so it is okay to start slow. Even
doing 10 minutes a day can be beneficial; you just
want to make sure the exercise is enough to make
you sweat and gets the heart pumping.
These are not surefire ways to prevent cancer
since genetics can also play a factor in its development. Luckily, there are ways to treat it. One of the
common ways to treat it would be surgery, which is
often needed to remove the breast cancer tumor.
There are a wide variety of surgeries available,
ranging from removal of the tumor plus radiation
therapy to entire removal of the breast. The surgeries vary depending on the cancer and how far it
has progressed. After these surgeries are given, it
is typical to receive chemotherapy or radiation
therapy as well. This is given in order to kill any
cancer cells that may have been left behind after
the surgery so the cancer doesn’t grow back.
Hormone therapy can also be used before surgery
or after surgery. These medications can be used to
treat recurrent cancer as well. Additionally, there
are targeted therapy drugs that are very expensive, and drugs to treat cancer that has spread to
the bones. As you can see, there are many treatment options, so it’s important to talk to your doctor
to make sure which treatment is right for you.
In order to catch breast cancer, it is encouraged to
perform a breast self-exam every month. To
perform a breast self-exam, a woman checks for
lumps or any irregularities in the breast three ways.
First, a woman should check in the shower and feel
the entire breast and armpit areas for lumps, thickening, or hardened knots. Second, a woman
should check in front of the mirror with her arms on
the hips as well as in the air. They would be looking
for any changes in the skin or changes in the
nipple. Lastly, a woman should lie down and put a
pillow under the right shoulder. Then she should
put her right arm above her head and use the left
hand to feel for lumps in the breast by moving in a
small circular motion. She should also squeeze the
nipple to check for discharge and lumps, and then
repeat on the left side. Additional ways to check for
breast cancer include scheduling a monthly mammogram or clinical breast exam.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers
among women and is one of the leading causes of
death in women in the United States. Lifestyle
modifications such as eating a healthy diet and
staying active are good ways to help lower the
chance of developing the cancer. When these fail,
there are a wide variety of therapies that can
potentially eliminate the cancer so it’s important to
weigh all the risks and benefits of each to determine which one is right for you. It is also important
to check monthly for any irregularities to catch
breast cancer early to improve its prognosis. Hopefully, armed with this knowledge, we can prevent
more breast cancer as well as treat it more effectively in order to reduce the amount of people who
suffer from this deadly disease.

President Robert Monzon‘s Message
on behalf of the MHDC Board of
Directors and Staff
This month, we stand with the mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and
friends who have been affected by breast cancer, and we recognize
the ongoing efforts of dedicated advocates, researchers, and health
care providers who strive each day to defeat this terrible disease. In
memory of the loved ones we have lost and inspired by the resilience
of those living with the disease, let us strengthen our resolve to lead

MPD JOINS FIGHT AGAINST
BREAST CANCER THROUGH PINK PATCH PROJECT
by Anne Donofrio-Holter
Contributing Writer
The Montebello Police Department, through its participation in
the Pink Patch Project, has joined in the fight against breast
cancer and is helping to raise money for, and awareness of,
the disease that has affected so many women.
"Breast cancer has affected our organization on several levels
and has touched the lives of our employees and their
families," said Montebello Police Captain Luis Lopez. "The
Pink Patch Project centers on vibrant pink versions of our
department police patches designed specifically for this
campaign."
Montebello Police Department officers will be wearing the pink
patches on their uniforms the entire month of October, Breast
Cancer Awareness Month.
"The Department is offering the patches to the community for
$10 each and t-shirts for $20 each while supplies last. The
money raised will be donated towards cancer research, treatment and education," said Sergeant Marc Marty. "They can
be purchased in the police station lobby."
"I will proudly wear my pink patch in honor of those that have
lost the battle to breast cancer, to raise awareness, to find a
cure and in support of two of my close friends that have
recently fought and beat this dreadful disease," added Lopez.
The Pink Patch Project is a collaborative effort between the
Los Angeles County Police Chiefs' Association and law
enforcement agencies throughout Los Angeles County in an
effort to bring attention to the fight against breast cancer.
