Council Corner
Message From the Ambassadors–
Kurt and Morgan Bertram
We have been members of The Club at Sonterra since July 2013, after relocating to San
Antonio from Kansas City, Missouri. We have
enjoyed making new friends and participating
in a variety of activities including: Fourth of
July Celebration, Taste of the Northside, Vintner’s Club Wine Tastings
and Grape Stomp, Chili Cook Off, and the Monthly Member Mixers.
We have enjoyed bringing local family and friends, as well as those
from out of town, to Sunday Brunch and Happy Hour. We were
invited to be Ambassadors in 2015 and have enjoyed meeting new
members for dinner and introducing them to all The Club has to offer
them and their families. With warmer weather coming, it is a great
time to get in a round of golf or a game of tennis, enjoy a day at the
pool, or have a cold drink at the 19th Hole or The Tavern on the
Green. Make sure to check your monthly schedule for the upcoming
events each month and take advantage of all the great activities YOUR
Club has to offer!
Message From the BoardRon Botello, Board Chairman
I hope everyone had a great April and celebrated
Fiesta and The Taste of the Northside, which we
hosted. We had a wet April which interfered with
some of our golf events, but was well received in
assisting Donny’s ability to get our courses in great
shape. Not that I’m there all the time, but I’ve
noticed more and more members are utilizing the
Tavern on the Green, our upgraded lounge in the main Clubhouse.
It’s a great stopping point after a game of tennis or golf or before
dinner. Come celebrate the nice tax return you are going to receive
(if that’s the case). If you have not checked it out, please stop by with
your friends and enjoy the atmosphere.
The Club at Sonterra hosted an Inter-Club golf event and I received
great feedback from some members of other clubs on how well
conditioned not only our golf course was, but the grounds and
facilities as well. Please come out and enjoy all your club has to offer.
I met with The Ambassador’s Council recently and want to thank
them for all they do in greeting new members and welcoming them to
our club. Gina Graham is doing a great job of leading this important
group of members.
May is always a busy and warm month and the club always has a great
Mother's Day offering. So bring Mom out with the rest of the family
and honor her with her special day. See you at The Club.
Thank you so much to Botello, Churchill & Musel Golf Groups
for contributing to serve the Sonterra Staff Lunch! Every year, on
the day of the “Taste of The Northside”, these Members solicit
donations from their fellow members so they can feed the staff.
We really appreciate everyone who contributed and we
appreciate your support of the Club!

On the Greens– Donny
Latham,
As of this writing we have begun installing
new pump/motors in all water features on
the North Course. Seeing these water
features running has been a goal of mine
for a very long time. I look forward to
hearing and seeing the water running on
these features to enhance your experience. I am proud to announce that we have officially made it through winter without
too many setbacks. We have plugged a few minor areas on our
North Miniverde greens that wore out through the winter,
mainly from walk up traffic areas, but our Miniverde greens are
extremely healthy and we are starting to work our way to our
expected 10’+ on the stemp meter. Our South greens transition is going very smoothly. We are already at 60% Bermuda
grass vs. 40% Poa trivialis. This transition will continue for the
next month as we head into the warmer months. I am very
pleased with how our South greens handled the winter and how
well they played all winter long.
During the month of May we will aerify and verticut all fairways
on both North and South. We will do all we can to make this
process as least intrusive on play as possible. This process will
promote a smoother and healthier fairway for the long summer
ahead. We will also aerify all tee boxes and highly compacted
areas in our rough. These should heal quickly and not interrupt
play. May is also the month we will need to shut down the
range for 7-10 days as we interseed Bermuda grass into our
driving range. I have received more compliments on the range
not just from members, but from many guests who haven’t
seen the improved range. So this small inconvenience to establish our summer turf is well worth having solved one of the
biggest eye sores at Sonterra.
Just a reminder, as we continue to grow our rough up to the
expected height, I urge you to remind your playing partners to
keep your carts in the fairways as much possible. The added
traffic in the rough keeps it beat down and makes it harder for
us to provide you with the definition that we are all looking for.
I understand that a healthy rough often times makes the courses
play more difficult, but it also keeps many errant tee shots from
rolling into hazards. Please obey all signs and keep carts out of
roped off areas. I thank you for your support. As always, I
want to thank you all for being a member. Enjoy the spring!
Sonterra Women’s
Golf Association
Congratulations to Maggie Felicella, STAR of the Month for April with a
gross 85 and Rachel Wadsworth, ACE of the Month with a net 67!
The beautiful weather brought out a field of fierce competitors for this year’s
Brutette Partnership. The 27-hole event was played in near perfect conditions
on the South Course with the team of Carol Buss and Darnes Hicks edging
out the competition with a 94 Net Score. Three teams finished one stroke off
the lead: Mary Malone and Darla Hedrick; Sue Colburn and Cindy Gibbs; and
Nancy Schwartz and Dolly Simmons. Tied for 5th place with a net 96 were:
Barb Dallahan and Mary Lucas; and Sandra Ware and Patty Warren. Call the
Pro Shop to come join the fun and enjoy our great courses!

Golf News– Jeff Hunter, Director of Golf
It seems as though every time we get a good run going on
golf, activities and events, we get a little bad weather. I
guess that's a good thing with the recent rains the golf
courses are really good and getting better. Donny had
perfect timing with the fertilizers and the rain (he claims to
be psychic), and the grasses are growing like crazy. Come
out and enjoy your golf courses and please help us maintain them. Cart traffic, divots and ball marks should all be
addressed.
Our SWGA, GGG, and MGA groups continue to thrive. Last week
the ladies enjoyed the "brutette", 27 hole golf marathon on Wednesday. Thirty
-six women survived the day and had a great time. The MGA held the MG
squared event. Seventy members and seventy two guests played a two day
event, and even though we had a couple of rain showers, everyone enjoyed
themselves and the two days. GGG's continue to play on Tuesday afternoons
with a free thirty minute lesson before play. One of our newest and biggest
groups is the Sunday couple group. Most Sundays 10 to 16 couples tee it up
for fun and sun. If you are looking for a group to play with our an organization to join, call us and let us help you get more involved.

Important Changes to our Tournaments
The MGA has made changes to our tournaments that you
should be aware of. Our goal is to create premier events for
members to enjoy. Changes include:
 Tee boxes will be more flexible with the goal of increasing

participation. In multiple flight events, like our April
MGA Squared Fiesta, players will play from the tee box
where the majority of their scores are posted, with no additional modifications to handicap. In single flight events,
such as the scramble and foursome events, MGA tees (half
blue/half white) will be used.
MGA Tournament Handicapping – we have adopted a
new MGA tournament handicap system. The goal is to
level the playing field and give everyone equal opportunity
to win. The system was developed by Dean Knuth, former head of handicapping for the USGA. Points are given
to the lowest NET scores across the entire field and accumulated over a two year period. When a player accumulates too many points his MGA tournament handicap is
adjusted. USGA handicap is not adjusted and number of
tournaments played is taken into consideration. For more
information follow this link:
http://www.popeofslope.com/pointsystem/index.html

Our MG Squared Tournament is our premier event. It was held on

of “liquid sunshine” both days, turnout was great and a good time was had by
all. Prior to the tournament, we held a Kick-off Party which included many
spouses and significant others. The evening featured a pitch and putt team
competition that was well attended and hotly contested.

Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
April was a very hectic month for everyone-- especially
with all the make-up matches you had to get finished
from our soggy March. When we weren’t playing tennis
we were busy organizing for the Member Guest Tournament (results to follow in next newsletter.) We are
really getting to see “close up” how well our members
can multi task. Between make-up matches, league play,
Easter, Fiesta (party) and tournament play most people
would be exhausted, but not true for our members
though—WOW!
We begin May with the biggest event of the year --The
Grand Slam Member Guest Tournament ---and we
follow it with our Club Doubles Championship. May is
no longer a transition month. Most members (if not
playing in the USTA playoffs) are preparing for the
next round of league play. There are now so many categories of leagues that it is possible to play one to five different leagues per week.
Back to USTA league play for a moment. Since the majority of members play
USTA and SAPTA tennis, and since we have a huge number of teams playing out
of Sonterra, you would think we wouldn’t have a problem filling all our teams.
Well, we do have several teams that need to be filled. We want to help fill these
teams but we need your help by letting us know if you are looking for a team or if
you are looking for players. This applies to both men and ladies. Let’s try and help
keep all our teams full so we all continue to have the ultimate tennis experience.
We are knocking on summer’s door and July brings new ratings for many of our
members. Please let us know if you need a team or if you are a new captain and
need players. Working together we will leave no member behind.
May Upcoming Events:
May 1-3 --The GRAND SLAM MEMBER GUEST TOURNAMENT
May 4- Registration for summer adult leagues-- 8am
May 4- Junior program begins
May 10- Mother’s Day
May 11-15-The Club Doubles Championship
May 25- Memorial Day Mixer- 9am to noon Adult and Juniors
June Upcoming Events:
June 1—Adult club leagues begin
June 8-First session of Summer Junior Camp
June 15- 2nd session of Summer Junior Camp
June 22nd -3rd session of Summer Junior Camp
June 29th – 4th session of Summer Junior Camp
Summer Time Checklist and RemindersCourt Reservations- Please check in before going to your court. This is our way of
monitoring court availability for our members’ use. We will assume the court is open
after 10 minutes if you haven’t called to inform us of your delay.
Guest Policy- Guests are limited to one visit per month. House guests must be registered through the membership department for longer club privileges.
Towels - The hotter it becomes the more towels we go through and disappear. Please
help us with this huge problem of “THE MISSING TOWEL” mystery. We have strategically placed the towel bins around the facility for easy disposal. The cost is astronomical.
Trash- The tennis facility looks beautiful and we know how proud our members are
of their club. Please help by disposing of your cups and trash in the trash cans provided for you. FOOD IS NOT ALLOWED ON THE COURTSTennis Dress Code- Men are required to wear shirts with sleeves. No cut-offs, bathing suits, cargo pants, or workout tops are permitted. No black-soled shoes of any type
other than specifically manufactured for tennis.
Please help us maintain the beauty of your facility that you are so proud of.
Upcoming Tournaments
Ladies Monday League for the Summer May 18th 9am
We will again be offering a Monday morning league to substitute for the absence of the USTA league. It will be for
levels 3.5 to 4.5. It is a “call in league” so you are not committed to play each week. Just email or call Laurie each week
and let her know you want to play. Pretty easy.
Ladies Clay Court League May 18th 9am
We have had a request from some of our ladies to run a clay
court league. Well here it is and it’s pretty simple. Again you
email or call Laurie and let her know you are coming to play.
We pair you up – send you out—and you provide the fun.
Clay is fun.
Men’s Clay Court League Thursday’s 9am
Guys if you have Thursday morning off this is the league for
you. We have a group of men that love their clay courts and
would love for you to join them for a little doubles match on
clay. It’s fun, it’s slower, it’s cooler and it’s in the morning.
Call Laurie if this sounds interesting to you.
Memorial Day Mixer Monday May 25th 9am to noon * Adults and Juniors
What a great way to spend a holiday-play a little tennis, eat a
little barbecue and enjoy a little dip in the pool. We typically
have 80 to 90 adults and 30 to 40 juniors in attendance. Mark
your calendars for a fun day at the club with your family.
Ball Machine Club Don’t let another summer go by and not take advantage of
the ball machine. Need work on your return of serve-it can
do it. How about volleys and overheads—it can do it. How
about the power forehand you’ve been watching on TV- it
will feed you the ball to help you perfect it. You want drills
on the ball machine- your pro will devise it for you. Come on
now-no excuses let’s get out there and hit some balls. They
say you must hit 10,000 balls to get a shot down—what
number are you on? I’ll meet you down at court 7. Let’s just
do it.
Club Doubles Championship May 11-15
DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS MAY 4th
MUST BE ABLE TO PLAY DURING THE WEEK
Here’s your chance to occupy one of those Club Champions’
parking spaces and get your name and picture on the plaque
of fame. This is the first of our trifecta of club championships events. It is a week-long tournament and you must be
able to play all week.
BEGINNERS & ADVANCED BEGINNERS CLINIC
MONDAY 9 to 10:30am
If you aren’t already in this class with Mike then now’s the
time to take that step and do it. This is a great class to learn
the right way, meet other ladies of similar abilities and have a
great cardio workout. Don’t worry about the equipment-we have that covered. What we need is YOU! Call Mike at
491-9888 or email him at [email protected]
