SINOPSIS

SYNOPSIS
Mumbai-based Kabir Dhiman, who comes from a wealthy building construction
family, proposes to his long-time girlfriend, Natasha, much to the delight of both their
respective families. He then gets together with one of two of his close friends, Imran
Habib, a writer by profession, and they contact their London-based financial broker
friend, Arjun, to remind him of a pact of traveling to Spain. The trio commence their
long overdue trip not fully realizing that Arjun has still not forgiven Imran for his breakup with Sunani, while he himself regrets being dumped by Rohini, and must also
compete with Imran for the affections of gorgeous Deep Sea Diving Instructor, Laila;
Kabir struggles to accept life as Natasha's husband; and Imran must ready himself to
meet his biological father, Salman, who had abandoned him at birth.

Abu and Aisumma are an aging Muslim couple. Their aspiration is to go for Hajj and
they make many sacrifices to achieve this aim. Now in their late 70s, they decide that
they will go for Hajj that year. Abu, being a true Muslim, wants to go for Hajj only
according to all diktats of Islam. Good-natured people try to help him by loaning the
amount, but since this is against the accepted practices of the religion, he refuses to
take them. Finally, they are not able to go. On the dawn of the Hajj, Abu tells his wife
that they will go the next year. He goes to the mosque to pray on the Hajj morning.

"URUMI" takes off at a point in the late 15th century when the celebrated
businessman Vasco-Da-Gama stumbles on a sea route to India. He lands in Kerala
and is looked after royally as a state guest. But the local King spurns the advances
and bribes of Vasco-Da-Gama who wants to secure the precious spices of Kerala.
Taking offence at the act, Gama returns to Portugal and brings back an army to
secure the spices and do business. He takes control over Kerala's ports and
unleashes a violent streak of his on the local population with his cohorts. The local
chieftain Kulottan (Arya) loses himself in the process of saving his tribesmen and
people. The atrocities of Gama and his people are noticed by Kelu Nayanar, the son
of Kulottan and he resolves in his mind that he has to avenge for the killing of his
father and also free his motherland from the clutches of evil Vasco-Da-Gama.
SINOPSIS

SYNOPSIS
Los principales acontecimientos de esta historia ocurren en un solo día, el 16 de
septiembre, en un abarrotado cruce de tráfico en Kochi. Dos amigos, Raihan y
Rajeev, viajando en una moto son fatalmente atropellados por un coche en un cruce
de semáforos. Raihan iba a su primer trabajo de periodista para entrevistar a la
superestrella, Siddharth Shankar.

The main events mentioned in the story happen on a single day, September 16, at a

This film deals with the characters that remain unnoticed in this era of globalization.
These are the human beings surviving in the opposite direction of the stream. These
little businessmen-like hawkers, street performers are rapidly going extinct from our
vicinity due to the constant pressure of the market. They don't carry big brand names
behind them but they are creative enough to color our life with their magnificent
performances. They are often treated as garbage of this society but they have
something special to say about their aspirations and dreams. Krishna earns his bread
by performing as a living statue on the streets of Kolkata. The only people in his life
are his Uncle (Nepal Kaka), his friend Rasu and a beautiful mannequin with whom he
is incurably infatuated. Krishna's dream shatters when instead of his beloved he finds
a headless mannequin. He madly scours the streets to see her again. Nepal Kaka
breathes his last, ironically while performing as a statue and Rasu's play at drugs
spirals into addiction leading to his death in a freak accident. Having lost his love and
friend, life becomes an agony for Krishna.

Zoya Akhtar is a contemporary Indian film director. She made her debut as director
with critically acclaimed Luck By Chance (2009).In 2011, she directed the critically
and commercially successful film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and won her Filmfare
Award for Best Director.
Zoya Akhtar was born on October 14, 1972 in Bombay. Her stepmother is Shabana
Azmi. Zoya belongs to a Akhtar-Azmi family and is the daughter of poet, lyricist and
screenwriter Javed Akhtar, elder sister of Farhan Akhtar and granddaughter of Urdu
poet Jan Nisar Akhtar. Her mother is screenwriter Honey Irani. She went to school at
Maneckji Cooper and earned her Bachelors of Arts degree at Xavier's College, both in
Mumbai. Later, she joined the New York University Film School to learn film
production.Married to Mukesh Lawarischand.
Zoya has worked on a number of commercials including Pepsi and Finolex. She has
co-directed a music video called Price of Bullets for a rock band. She has also worked
as a casting director for various films including Dil Chahta Hai, Kamasutra: A Tale of
Love and Split Wide Open, and as an assistant director for her brother Farhan's
films, Lakshya (film) and Dil Chahta Hai. She then worked as an executive producer
for her longtime friend Reema Kagti's Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., also produced
by Excel Entertainment.

Salim Ahamed was born on 1 October 1970 in Mattannur, Kerala,as the son of

Tourism. Upon graduating from college in early 2000s, Salim dreamed of joining the
film industry but found it hard to break into and ended up a travel consultant. For his
passion, he joined the School of Drama in Thrissur, Kerala. He worked as a Creative
Director and Script Writer with Surya TV and then worked in films such as Saphalyam
as an Assistant Director. His notable works as a television director include Rasikaraja
No.1, a comedy programme telecast in Surya TV.

Santosh Sivan, born in Trivandrum, Kerala, India, is an Indian cinematographer, film
director, and producer who has worked in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi cinema and
english cinema.
Apart from feature films, he also directed a 13-minute-long Kannada short film,
Prarambha; a part of Mira Nair's project Aids Jaago (Aids Awake).
Santhosh Sivan graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and
went on to completing 45 features and 41 documentaries. He was a founding
member of the Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC) and is the most awarded
director of photography (DP) in India. He was awarded the National Film Awards for
Best Cinematography four times, for the films Perumthachan (1991), Kaalapani
(1996), Iruvar (1997), and Dil Se.. (1998).
Santosh Sivan, a founder member of the Indian Society of Cinematographers and the
most awarded Director of Photography in this country, graduated from the Film and
Television Institute of India and went on to completing 45 features and 41
documentaries.
He was awarded the National Award for best Cinematographer for the films
Perumthachan (Malayalam/1991), Kalapani (Malayalam / 1996), Mohiniyattam
(Malayalam / 1991), Iruvar (Tamil/1998) and Dil Se.. (Hindi/1999).
Sivan was honored by the Japanese Society of Cinematographers and has been on
the Jury for the Busan Film Festival. He is a “mentor” to students for Mira Nair’s
“Maisha Film Lab: in Uganda and is a director to the Sivan Foundation of
photography. He was also a governing council member at the Pune Film Institute.
As a director, Santosh won his first National Award in 1988 for the film THE STORY
OF TIBLU. His film HALO (Hindi / 1995) was honored at the 43rd National Film
Awards in India (1996) for Best Children’s Film and Best Sound.

DR BIJU KUMAR
Mrinal Sen nació el 14 de mayo de 1923 en la ciudad de Faridpur, ahora en
Bangladesh. Tras terminar en su ciudad natal, se marcha a Calcuta a estudiar Física.
Durante sus días como estudiante, se relacionará con el ala cultural del Partido
Comunista. Aunque nunca llegó a ser miembro del partido, su relación con la Indian
Peoples Theatre Association le acercó a personas de afinidad cultural. Su interés por
el cine comienza después de tropezar con un libro sobre estética cinematográfica.
Sin embargo, su interés se mantiene en un orden intelectual y se vio forzado a
aceptar un trabajo como representante médico, lo cual ocasión su marcha de
Calcuta. Esto no duró mucho tiempo, y regresó a la ciudad, ocupando un puesto de
técnico de sonido en los estudios de cine de Calcuta de manera temporal, lo cual es
el comienzo de su carrera en el mundo del cine.
Realiza su primer largometraje en 1953, el cual pronto desea olvidar. Su siguiente
película, Neel Akasher Nichey (Under the Blue Sky), le otorga reconocimiento local,
mientras su tercera película, Baishey Shravan (Wedding Day), fue la primera que le
lanzó internacionalmente. Después de realizar cinco películas más, hizo una película
de muy bajo presupuesto por el Gobierno de la India. Esta película, Bhuvan Shome
(Mr. Shome), finalmente, le lanzó como un cineasta mayor, tanto nacional como

Mrinal Sen was born on May 14, 1923, in the town of Faridpur, now in Bangladesh.
After finishing his high school there, he left home to come to Calcutta for studying
physics. During his student days, he got involved with the cultural wing of the
Communist party. Though he never became a member of the party, his association
with the Indian Peoples Theatre Association brought him close to a number of likeminded cultural people. His interest in films started after he stumbled upon a book on
film aesthetics. However his interest remained mostly intellectual and he was forced
to take up a job of a medical representative, which took him away from Calcutta. This
did not last very long, and he came back to the city and eventually took a job of an
audio technician in a Calcutta film studio, which was the beginning of his film carrier.
Mrinal Sen made his first feature film in 1953, which he soon tried to forget... His next
film, Neel Akasher Nichey (Under the Blue Sky), earned him local recognition, while
his third film, Baishey Shravan (Wedding Day) was his first film that gave him
international exposure. After making five more films, he made a film with a shoestring budget provided by the government of India. This film, Bhuvan Shome (Mr.
Shome), finally launched him as a major filmmaker, both nationally and
internationally. Bhuvan Shome also initiated the ?New Cinema? film movement in
India. His next few films were overtly political, and earned him the reputation as a
Marxist artist. This was also the time of large-scale political unrest throughout India,
particularly in and around Calcutta. This phase was immediately followed by a series
of films where he shifted his focus, and instead of looking for enemies outside; he
looked for the enemy within his own middle-class society. This was arguably his most
creative phase and won him a large number of international awards. Mrinal Sen
never stopped experimenting with his medium.
In his later films he tried to move away from the narrative structure and worked with
very thin story lines. After a long gap of eight years, at the age of eighty, he made his
latest film, Aamar Bhuvan, in 2003.

SYNOPSIS

of a friend, who has given him the run of the house while he and his family are away.
Completely alone - save for the occasional company of a servant and the servant's
grandson - the writer settles in for late-night, tea-fueled writing sessions. One night
the telephone rings, and though the other end is silent, the caller rings again the next
day, and soon the young writer engages nightly in cryptic, languid conversations with
the woman at the other end of the line. She is a rich man's mistress (Dimple
Kapadia) whose lover has apparently lost interest in her. Still, he keeps her in a
luxurious high-rise apartment, and also supports the rest of her family, from whom
she is stranged. The young woman is lonely and depressed; she never leaves the
apartment, and reaches out only to random strangers on the telephone. Their
conversations, and the effect those conversations exert on each of them, is the focus
of the film.

SYNOPSIS
This film is about eternal love that flows through three characters of the film – Meher,
Shakina and Noor. Despite bigotry, unceasing violence and hatred engulfing out
society, these three village people and love among them epitomizes the eternal love.
The film moves away from the abyss of despair and walks quietly into a tranquil
village.

ups and downs of their past, the film captures the instant present and brings into
focus the loves among the three when, at a certain point, with no malice against
anyone they arrive at a moment of truth.

SYNOPSIS

the marriage. Kistaiah refused and married Nilamma.
Nilamma tries to control the family. Venkaiah does not change. Kistaiah stands
between them. There is bitterness in the family. In course of time Nilamma conceives.
One day, they find Nilamma in acute pain. The father refuses to call a midwife and
Nilamma dies. They decide to conduct funeral rites to Nilamma. They go begging
around the village and gather some money and decide to spend it on drinks.

Satyajit Ray (2 de mayo 1921 - Calcuta 23 de abril 1992) fue un director de cine
indio, considerado uno de los grandes artistas del siglo veinte, a causa de su estilo
sutil, austero y lírico de dirección de películas.
Ray nació en una importante familia bengalí de literatos y artistas. Se graduó en el
Presidency College de Calcuta y estudió bellas artes en la Visva-Bharati University,
en Santiniketan. Fue atraído por la cinematografía tras conocer al cineasta francés
Jean Renoir y ver la película neorealista italiana El ladrón de bicicletas durante una
visita a Londres. El debut cinematográfico de Ray, Pather Panchali (La canción del
camino), ganó once premios internacionales incluyendo el Mejor Documento
Humano en el Festival de Cine de Cannes. Junto con Aparajito y Apur Sansar, Pather
Panchali forma la Trilogía de Apu, la obra maestra de Ray.

Satyajit Ray (2 May 1921 - 23 April 1992) was an Indian Bengali filmmaker. Ray is
regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of 20th century cinema.
Born in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) into a Bengali family prominent in the world
of arts and letters, Ray studied at Presidency College and at the Visva-Bharati
University. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into filmmaking
after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing the Italian neorealist film
Bicycle Thieves during a visit to London.
Ray directed thirty-seven films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He
was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, graphic designer and film critic. Ray's
first film, Pather Panchali, won eleven international prizes, including Best Human
Document at the Cannes film festival. Along with Aparajito and Apur Sansar, the film
forms the Apu trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, cinematography, art
direction, editing and designed his own credit titles and publicity material.
Ray received many major awards, including 32 National Film Awards, a number of
international awards, and an Academy Honorary Award in 1992.
Ray fue un cineasta prolífico y dirigió treinta y siete películas en su vida,

Shyam Benegal is one of the pioneers of new cinema in India. In the seventies a new type of

Seedling, 1973) was groundbreaking in more ways than one. He challenged all the established
rules of Indian Popular Cinema. Without a cast of stars, without songs and without melodrama,
has been a success and attracted crowds. Revered by the elite of the arts and the director for
over thirty years, his films arouse interest among both current public and between
understanding public.

11 años con una cámara regalada por su padre que era fotógrafo profesional. Como estudiante

Born in 1934 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Benegal made his first film as a child 11 years with
a camera given to him by his father, a professional photographer. As a graduate student in
economics at Hyderabad, Benegal was very active in the movement of the film club and moved
to Mumbai to shoot over a thousand ads. His cousin, Guru Dutt was a famous director who shot
movies like Pyaasa (Eternal Thirst, 1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (Paper Flowers, 1959) before
he began his career. But Benegal chose to develop his own style of filmmaking.

Mrinal Sen nació el 14 de mayo de 1923 en la ciudad de Faridpur, ahora en
Bangladesh. Tras terminar en su ciudad natal, se marcha a Calcuta a estudiar Física.
Durante sus días como estudiante, se relacionará con el ala cultural del Partido
Comunista. Aunque nunca llegó a ser miembro del partido, su relación con la Indian
Peoples Theatre Association le acercó a personas de afinidad cultural. Su interés por
el cine comienza después de tropezar con un libro sobre estética cinematográfica.
Sin embargo, su interés se mantiene en un orden intelectual y se vio forzado a
aceptar un trabajo como representante médico, lo cual ocasión su marcha de
Calcuta. Esto no duró mucho tiempo, y regresó a la ciudad, ocupando un puesto de
técnico de sonido en los estudios de cine de Calcuta de manera temporal, lo cual es
el comienzo de su carrera en el mundo del cine.
Realiza su primer largometraje en 1953, el cual pronto desea olvidar. Su siguiente
película, Neel Akasher Nichey (Under the Blue Sky), le otorga reconocimiento local,
mientras su tercera película, Baishey Shravan (Wedding Day), fue la primera que le
lanzó internacionalmente. Después de realizar cinco películas más, hizo una película

Mrinal Sen was born on May 14, 1923, in the town of Faridpur, now in Bangladesh.
After finishing his high school there, he left home to come to Calcutta for studying
physics. During his student days, he got involved with the cultural wing of the
Communist party. Though he never became a member of the party, his association
with the Indian Peoples Theatre Association brought him close to a number of likeminded cultural people. His interest in films started after he stumbled upon a book on
film aesthetics. However his interest remained mostly intellectual and he was forced
to take up a job of a medical representative, which took him away from Calcutta. This
did not last very long, and he came back to the city and eventually took a job of an
audio technician in a Calcutta film studio, which was the beginning of his film carrier.
Mrinal Sen made his first feature film in 1953, which he soon tried to forget... His next
film, Neel Akasher Nichey (Under the Blue Sky), earned him local recognition, while
his third film, Baishey Shravan (Wedding Day) was his first film that gave him
international exposure. After making five more films, he made a film with a shoestring budget provided by the government of India. This film, Bhuvan Shome (Mr.
Shome), finally launched him as a major filmmaker, both nationally and
internationally. Bhuvan Shome also initiated the ?New Cinema? film movement in
India. His next few films were overtly political, and earned him the reputation as a
Marxist artist. This was also the time of large-scale political unrest throughout India,
particularly in and around Calcutta. This phase was immediately followed by a series
of films where he shifted his focus, and instead of looking for enemies outside; he
looked for the enemy within his own middle-class society. This was arguably his most
creative phase and won him a large number of international awards. Mrinal Sen
never stopped experimenting with his medium.
In his later films he tried to move away from the narrative structure and worked with
very thin story lines. After a long gap of eight years, at the age of eighty, he made his
latest film, Aamar Bhuvan, in 2003.

of a friend, who has given him the run of the house while he and his family are away.
Completely alone - save for the occasional company of a servant and the servant's
grandson - the writer settles in for late-night, tea-fueled writing sessions. One night
the telephone rings, and though the other end is silent, the caller rings again the next
day, and soon the young writer engages nightly in cryptic, languid conversations with
the woman at the other end of the line. She is a rich man's mistress (Dimple
Kapadia) whose lover has apparently lost interest in her. Still, he keeps her in a
luxurious high-rise apartment, and also supports the rest of her family, from whom
she is stranged. The young woman is lonely and depressed; she never leaves the
apartment, and reaches out only to random strangers on the telephone. Their
conversations, and the effect those conversations exert on each of them, is the focus
of the film.

This film is about eternal love that flows through three characters of the film – Meher,
Shakina and Noor. Despite bigotry, unceasing violence and hatred engulfing out

It is a truth that unceasing toil in the day to day life of the villagers is killing their spirit,

ups and downs of their past, the film captures the instant present and brings into
focus the loves among the three when, at a certain point, with no malice against

Satyajit Ray (2 de mayo 1921 - Calcuta 23 de abril 1992) fue un director de cine
indio, considerado uno de los grandes artistas del siglo veinte, a causa de su estilo
sutil, austero y lírico de dirección de películas.
Ray nació en una importante familia bengalí de literatos y artistas. Se graduó en el
Presidency College de Calcuta y estudió bellas artes en la Visva-Bharati University,
en Santiniketan. Fue atraído por la cinematografía tras conocer al cineasta francés
Jean Renoir y ver la película neorealista italiana El ladrón de bicicletas durante una
visita a Londres. El debut cinematográfico de Ray, Pather Panchali (La canción del
camino), ganó once premios internacionales incluyendo el Mejor Documento
Humano en el Festival de Cine de Cannes. Junto con Aparajito y Apur Sansar, Pather
Panchali forma la Trilogía de Apu, la obra maestra de Ray.

Satyajit Ray (2 May 1921 - 23 April 1992) was an Indian Bengali filmmaker. Ray is
regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of 20th century cinema.
Born in the city of Calcutta (now Kolkata) into a Bengali family prominent in the world
of arts and letters, Ray studied at Presidency College and at the Visva-Bharati
University. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into filmmaking
after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing the Italian neorealist film
Bicycle Thieves during a visit to London.
Ray directed thirty-seven films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He
was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, graphic designer and film critic. Ray's
first film, Pather Panchali, won eleven international prizes, including Best Human
Document at the Cannes film festival. Along with Aparajito and Apur Sansar, the film
forms the Apu trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, cinematography, art
direction, editing and designed his own credit titles and publicity material.
Ray received many major awards, including 32 National Film Awards, a number of
international awards, and an Academy Honorary Award in 1992.
Ray fue un cineasta prolífico y dirigió treinta y siete películas en su vida,
comprendiendo largometrajes, documentales y cortos. Ray recibió muchos
importantes premios de cine en su ilustre carrera, incluyendo un Óscar Honorífico en
1992, poco antes de morir.

Shyam Benegal is one of the pioneers of new cinema in India. In the seventies a new type of

Seedling, 1973) was groundbreaking in more ways than one. He challenged all the established
rules of Indian Popular Cinema. Without a cast of stars, without songs and without melodrama,
has been a success and attracted crowds. Revered by the elite of the arts and the director for
over thirty years, his films arouse interest among both current public and between
understanding public.
Nacido en 1934 en Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Benegal rodó su primera película de niño con
11 años con una cámara regalada por su padre que era fotógrafo profesional. Como estudiante

Born in 1934 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Benegal made his first film as a child 11 years with
a camera given to him by his father, a professional photographer. As a graduate student in
economics at Hyderabad, Benegal was very active in the movement of the film club and moved
to Mumbai to shoot over a thousand ads. His cousin, Guru Dutt was a famous director who shot
movies like Pyaasa (Eternal Thirst, 1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (Paper Flowers, 1959) before
he began his career. But Benegal chose to develop his own style of filmmaking.

Gopalakrishnan nació el 3 de julio de 1941 en Pallickal, cerca de Adoor, la actual
Kerala, India. Comenzó su vida artística como actor en obras de teatro aficionado
cuando tenía 8 años. Más tarde escribió y dirigió algunas obras. Después de obtener
la licenciatura en Economía, Ciencias Políticas y Administración Pública en 1961

Gopalakrishnan was born on 3 July 1941 in the village of Pallickal (Medayil
Bungalow) near Adoor, present day Kerala, India. He started his artistic life as an
actor in amateur plays when he was 8. Later he shifted his base to writing and
direction and wrote and directed a few plays. After securing a degree in Economics,
Political Science and Public Administration in 1961 from the Gandhigram Rural
Institute, he worked as a Government officer near Dindigul in Tamilnadu . In 1962, he
left his job to study screenwriting and direction from the Pune Film Institute. He
completed his course from there with a scholarship from the Government of India.
With his classmates and friends, Adoor established Chithralekha Film Society and
Chalachithra Sahakarana Sangham; the organization was the first film society in
Kerala and it aimed at production, distribution and exhibition of films in the cooperative sector.
Adoor has scripted and directed eleven feature films and about thirty short films and
documentaries. Notable amongst the non-feature films are those on Kerala’s
performing arts.
Adoor's debut film, the national award winning Swayamvaram(1972) was a milestone
in Malayalam film history. The film was exhibited widely in various international film
festivals including those held in Moscow, Melbourne, London and Paris.
Apart from his films, Adoor's major contribution towards introducing a new cinema
culture in Kerala was the constitution of the first Film Society in Kerala, "Chitralekha
Film Society". He also took active part in the constitution of "Chitralekha," Kerala's
first Film Co-operative Society for film production. These movements triggered a
fresh wave of films, called "art films," by directors like G Aravindan, PA Becker, KG
George, Pavithran, and Raveendran. At a time this movement was so strong that
even popular cinema synthesised with art cinema to create a new genre of films.
Adoor has been known as a director who completely dictates every fine detail of his
films.
In consideration of his contribution to Indian cinema, the nation honoured him with
the title of Padma Shri(India's fourth highest civilian award) in 1984 and Padma
Vibhushan(India's second highest civilian award) in 2006.

Gopalakrishnan sets the film in 1941, the violent cusp of Indian independence, pitting
Gandhian principles against the harsher traditions of punishment and retribution. The
subtly nuanced performances bring the ever-present questions to bear on today's
political debate.

I am studing in Satyajit ray Film and television Institute , and i am in my
third year of the course in Direction and Screenplay Writing.
The idea for the story basically came from my childhood memories of
growing up with my mother and father in our home town in Shillong, and
also I wanted to do this film in Nagamese language , and cast actors from
the Niorth -east of India. It also my birth place. And since no one has ever
done a film in celloid in this language , it became my motivation.
Steven Ao está cursando estudios en SRFTI y está en el tercer año del
curso en dirección y guión.
NOTA DEL DIRECTOR
La idea de la historia proviene básicamente de mis recuerdos de infancia
creciendo con mi madre y padre en nuestra ciudad natal en Shillong, y
también quería hacer esta película en idioma Nagamese y con actores del
Nordeste de la India, que es mi lugar de nacimiento.
Y puesto que nadie ha hecho nunca una película en 35 mm en este
idioma, se convirtió en mi principal motivación.

Ray, Vijay Anand and Alfred Hitchcock, Rakshit is at present studying Film Direction at Satyajit Ray
Film and Television Institute, India.
“Goggles” is his first film.

Siendo un ferviente admirador del cine, fué también un sueño poder formar parte del proceso

Shishir Ray is a final year student of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, India. He is specializing in Film Direction and Screenplay-writing. Choukath (The
Threshold) is his debut short film, made originally on 35mm. Other than this, he has made a Documentary film named "Eyes Are Not Here" (2011). At present he
is working on the script of his Diploma film.
Selecting the argument of my film ‘The Threshold’
Choukath (The Threshold) tells of primal human emotions like parental love, and bereavement. The eternal truth that life must goes on, no matter what painful
steps we tread, is in the core of the film. So, the message of a transcendence, a striving towards fulfillment is subtly underlined in the film. As a director, I always
look positive towards life, and living. And I do believe that is why the argument of my film hold a firmer ground.
What it means to me to be a part of ImagineIndia
It fills me with a joy unspeakable to see my film gain an entry among the prized many from all over the world. The festival with all its good will and perseverance is
a profound platform for us, the budding film-makers, who are just starting out there, to showcase our potential. An Andrei Tarkovsky film or a Girish Kasaravali film
makes us a better human being, of course. A modest but blessed corner sharing with such master makers’ works is no small achievement, indeed. It is really a
fount of creative inspiration for me.
Shishir Ray es un estudiante del último año del Instituto de Cine y Televisión
Satyajit Ray, India. Está especializado en dirección de cine y guión. Choukath
(El umbral) es su primer cortometraje, hecho originalmente en 35 mm. Ha
realizado un documental llamado "Eyes Are Not Here" (2011). En la
actualidad está trabajando en el guión de su película de Diplomatura.
Choukath (El umbral) habla de emociones primarias humanas, como el amor
paterno o el duelo. La verdad de que la vida debe continuar, sin importar los
hechos dolorosos que la salpican, es el núcleo de esta película. Así, el mensaje
de la trascendencia, el esfuerzo para continuar y olvidar lo negativo, es
sutilmente subrayado en la película. Como director, siempre tengo actitud
positiva hacia la vida. Y creo que es por ello que el argumento de mi película
tenga una base firme.

I am a final year student of Direction & Screenplay Writing at Satyajit Ray Film & Television
Institute, Kolkata. Besides my project work, I have written & directed 3 Short Films and 1
Documentary Film, which are the basis of my filmmaking practice and endeavor to explore
and apply new ideas and techniques as a filmmaker. My experience in Advertising, and later
as an Assistant Director before enrolling into film school has only helped me balance and
strengthen my creative, aesthetic and technical abilities and channelize them into an artistic
and innovative expression via film.

With regards to my film's participation at International Film Festivals like Imagineindia where
my film is presented to the public along with other great works, I only feel proud & happy that I have
been given this opportunity to showcase my Film & the Cinema that's emerging from India.
Although I would have really wanted to participate in the Competition Section, nevertheless,
it's still an honour to present my film in front of an audience & hope they like it.

Soy estudiante del último año sobre Escritura del guión y Dirección en el Instituto de televisión y cine Satyajit Ray, Calcuta. Además de este filme, he
escrito y dirigido 3 cortometrajes y 1 documental, que fueron la base de mi práctica de cine y medio para explorar y aplicar nuevas ideas y técnicas como
realizador. Mi experiencia en publicidad y más tarde como ayudante de dirección, antes de matricularse en la escuela de cine sólo me ha ayudado a
equilibrar y fortalecer mi capacidad creativa, estética y técnica y canalizar una expresión artística e innovadora a través del medio audiovisual.

Ashish Pandey is a graduate from the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata. In 2007, he made his directorial debut with an independent short
film ‘The Cabin Man’. The film was selected at 15 International film festivals, won 5 awards and was exhibited at Centre Pompidou as part of the ParisDelhi-Bombay.
‘Khule Darwaaze’ (Open Doors) his second truth seeking adventure premiered at the Dubai film fest in Dec 2010 and since then has been screened at
25 film fests winning 3 best films and 3 special jury awards.
Ashish Pandey es graduado por el Instituto de Cine y Televisión Satyajit Ray, Calcuta. En 2007, hizo su debut como director con un cortometraje
independiente 'El hombre de la cabina'. La película fue seleccionada en 15 festivales internacionales de cine, ganando cinco premios y fue exhibida en el
Centro Pompidou como parte de la París-Delhi-Bombay.

Torsha Banerjee lives in Kolkata, India. She’s 25 years old and graduated from
Calcutta University in literature. Currently she’s pursuing her diploma course in film
direction from Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata. She travels alone
in all over India for photography and ethnography to fuel her creative hunger.
THE DIRECTOR’S NOTE
I am a solo woman traveler travelling and experiencing life in India. I tend to tell
the stories that I have seen, experienced, and absorbed. This gave birth of my film
‘Beauty’.
Since my college days I have been to Sonagachi, one of the largest brothels in Asia,
for a lot of times.
I used to roam alone and observe the lives there .Their life, their diction, their
attire, their households have moved me since then. This film shows a glimpse of the
untold tales hidden in those corners.

participado en diversas obras especialmente en producción e investigación. Trabajó

(Barcelona 2008) y Deconstruyendo a Ana (Barcelona 2009) y fue ayudante de
dirección en Defrosting Hitler (Chile, 2009). Portless (Barcelona 2011) es su primer
documental como directora. En la actualidad trabaja en su tesis doctoral sobre cine
digital en la Universidad Oberta de Cataluña, España.

The director appropriates another text and reinterprets it in the light of a reality which
does not know how to deal with: children and the India, conflicting philosophies,
survival and consumerism make you doubt even more of its position in the world.

Nació en Madrid en 1972, donde estudió guión y dirección cinematográfica en
diversas escuelas privadas, época en la que escribió y rodó su primer cortometraje:
“Bienaventurados”.
Durante varios años trabajó como técnico de iluminación y operador de cámara en
cine, televisión y publicidad, al tiempo que escribía guiones de cortometrajes y
largometrajes, así como algún libro de poemas.
En 2007 comenzó a grabar el primer documental, “Deconstrucción”, actualmente en
fase de montaje. En 2008 realizó un viaje de un año a India para grabar “Banaras
me”, su primera largometraje, así como los cortometrajes “No Men´s Children” y
“Omkareshwar”. Durante aquel año también se inició el rodaje de “Ganguiana”,
ficción documental en forma de relato onírico actualmente en fase de desarrollo.

modern-day Vietnam of a well-revered high school headmaster. She is the epitome of
the society’s righteous woman and the homemaker of every man’s dreams.
Her husband, Phuong, is her world. Hanh tends to everything from bringing him
fresh flowers for his morning tea to cleaning his motorcycle wheels. The devotion, the
patience, and the grace with which Hanh serves her husband can certainly make us
uncomfortable at how devoted, yet unnatural, her lover for him is. Yet, in the eyes of
a community, Hanh is indeed a perfect wife.
Hanh is considerate, virtuous, and faithful. Yet Hanh cannot give Phuong enough.
Their world is not perfect for she is unable to bear him children. In her determination
to give Phuong everything she thinks that he wants, she is introduced into a world of
grief, betrayal, and loneliness. Local gossip further induces the separation of her
marriage bonds. In trying to regain what is ripped away from her, Hanh is crushed to
see that Phuong is content in his new home and new wife, even without all the
meticulous care she thought he needed. In pain and desperation, Hanh turns away
from that society that had victimized her and finds peace in the world of the dead.

SINOPSIS
Para una película sobre la dislocación cultural y el "ser", como un concepto relativo,
¿Aquí o allí? es algo conceptual sobre un lugar.
La historia ocurre en el lapso de un sólo día. Un francés (Mello) se despierta en su
casa. tras el desayuno se va a los alrededores de la ciudad en una moto, pesca y
acaba a la deriva en el mar. Intercalando estas escenas hay diálogos entre el
francés y su esposa vietnamita sobre la construcción de un santuario para
desamparados enfrente de su casa. La búsqueda infructuosa de su esposa cuando
él desaparece, su presencia fantasmagórica a su alrededor y las visitas de sus
parientes muertos hace a uno inferir que él está muerto.
Vivir en el extranjero y estar casado con una mujer local hace del protagonista un
forastero y privilegiado al mismo tiempo.

SYNOPSIS
For a film on cultural dislocation and "being" as a relative concept, Here or There? is
all over the place conceptually.
The narrative just extends over one day. A Frenchman (Mello) wakes up in his house.
Concurrently, he is riding around town in a motorbike, fishing and adrift in the sea.
Interspersing these scenes are voice-over dialogues between the Frenchman and his
Vietnamese wife about the disruptive construction of a shrine for "forsaken spirits"
next door. The wife's fruitless search for him around town, his unnoticed presence
around her and visitations by her dead relatives prompt one to infer he is dead.
Living abroad and being married to a local wife makes the protagonist an outsider
and insider at the same time.

Pham, 63, cuyo verdadero nombre es Pham Thi Nhung, nació en Hanoi en 1948. Se
mudó a Suiza cuando la guerra de Vietnam terminó en 1975 y ahora vive en la
ciudad de Ho Chi Minh.
Después de trabajar como guionista y asistente del director en los años 70 y 80,
Pham se cambió al cine documental. Pero no fue hasta que regresó a Vietnam en
2005 que decidió hacer una película de ficción.
Su primera película como directora, ¿Aquí o allí?, ha representado a Vietnam en el
festival de Pusan, Corea del sur.
BIOGRAPHY
Pham, 63, whose real name is Pham Thi Nhung, was born in Hanoi in 1948. She
moved to Switzerland when the Vietnam War ended in 1975 and is now living in Ho
Chi Minh City.
After working as script-girl and a director’s assistant in the 70s and 80s, Pham moved
into scriptwriting and documentary filmmaking. But it wasn’t until she came back to
Vietnam in 2005 that she decided to make a film that was all her own.
Her debut film as a director, Do… hay day? (Here… or There), has represented
Vietnam against 12 other films in the “New Currents” at the Busan International Film
Festival October 6-14 in South Korea.

Nacido en 1953, Nguyen Vinh Son creció durante la guerra entre el Norte y el Sur
de Vietnam. Comenzó su carrera como fotógrafo, y luego se empezó a interesar por
la cinematografía, inspirado por contar historias sobre vidas que han sido
devastadas por la guerra y por la pobreza. Además de las numerosas películas que
ha dirigido para la televisión Vietnamita, los largometrajes creados por Nguyen Vinh
Son incluyen Fierce Childhood (Infancia feroz), The Last Knight (El último caballero)
y The Sweet Motherland (Duce Patria), con el que ganó el premio Lotus de Plata, el
Premio de Excelencia por el Jurado, y el de Excelente director en la novena edición
del Festival de Cine Nacional de Vietnam. Al mismo tiempo que dirige películas,
Nguyen Vinh Son imparte clases de cine en la Universidad San Kahu Dien Anh en la

Vietnam. He began his career as a photographer, then moved into filmmaking,

poverty. In addition to the numerous films he has directed for Vietnamese TV, Nguyen
Vinh Son’s feature films include Fierce Childhood, The Last Knight, and The Sweet
Motherland, which won the Silver Lotus Prize, the Jury’s Excellent Prize, and the
Excellent Director Award at the 9th Vietnam National Film Festival. As well as
directing films, Nguyen Vinh Son teaches filmmaking at San Khau Dien Anh
University in Ho Chi Minh City.

SINOPSIS
Australia, año 1922. Tres hombres blancos, contratados por el gobierno, siguen la

Gameau), novato en el outback. Y el tercero es Veterano (Grant Page), que piensa
más que actúa. Pero el verdadero líder, aunque los demás no lo sepan, es el propio
Rastreador (David Gulpilil), un misterioso personaje que no es lo que parece. Así
comienzan su búsqueda por el árido interior de Australia, ignorando que lo realmente
peligroso no será la caza al acusado, sino su propia lucha interior por el racismo.
The Tracker fue rodada íntegramente en exteriores de la escarpada Cordillera
Gammon, en interior de Australia, y en su estreno en el Festival de Adelaida 2002 de

SYNOPSIS
It's 1922; somewhere in Australia. When a Native Australian man is accused of
murdering a white woman, three white men (The Fanatic, The Follower and The
Veteran) are given the mission of capturing him with the help of an experienced
Native Australian (The Tracker). In charge is the Fanatic (Gary Sweet), cold, ruthless,
calculating but complex. The second of the three whites is the Follower (Damon
Gameau), a greenhorn, new to the outback. And there is the Veteran (Grant Page), a
thinker rather than a doer. But the real leader, whether the others know it or not, is
the Tracker himself (David Gulpilil), a mysterious figure who clearly isn't who he
seems. So they start their quest in the outback, not knowing that their inner wrestles
against and for racism will be more dangerous that the actual hunting for the
accused.
The Tracker was shot entirely on location in the rugged Gammon Ranges in outback
Australia and debuted to a standing ovation at the 2002 Adelaide Festival of Arts and
in Official Competition at the 2002 Venice International Film Festival. The film won
prizes all over the world, winning the Special Jury Prize at the 2002 Valladolid
International Film Festival, and Best Screenplay at the Festival of Ghent. In Australia
it won numerous prizes, including Best Film at both the 2002 Circle of Film Critics
Awards and the 2002 IF (people's) Awards.

score for) this unusual musical, which combines folk and country influences with the
aboriginal sounds of the Outback to tell the story of a lost child and the divergent
efforts to find her. A simple farmer (Paul Kelly) and his wife (Kaarin Fairfax) are the
proud parents of a beautiful little girl (Memphis Kelly).
Una noche, el padre le cuenta una historia para dormir sobre cantos de sirenas y la

One night, Father tells the girl a bedtime story about sirens songs and the moon;
fascinated by the story, the restless girl wanders out of the house in the night to follow

Albert (Kelton Pell), an Aborigine police offer with remarkable tracking abilities. The
farmer, however, is a prejudiced man, and objects to having a black man on the
search team, no matter what his abilities may be. Offended, Albert leaves the police
force behind, and sets out to find the girl on his own; soon, the girl's mother joins him,
convinced that Albert's knowledge is more valuable than her husband's ignorance.

Rolf de Heer nació en 1951 en Heemskerk, Holanda,
y emigró a Australia con su familia en 1959. A los
dieciocho años, empezó a trabajar en la Australian
Broadcasting Corporation, donde estuvo durante
siete años, hasta que decidió que era el momento de
dejar de tratar con asuntos de los demás para

La primera película de De Heer fue el largometraje

Raven's Gate" (1987), segundo largometraje de
Heer, fue un atmosférico thriller de misterio y ciencia
ficción, al que sucedió "Dingo"(1990), una odisea

por Friels Colin y la leyenda del jazz, Miles Davis.
"Bad Boy Bubby"(1993) marcó la primera colaboración de Heer, con el productor

Rolf de Heer was born in 1951 in Heemskerk, Holland, and migrated to Australia with
his family in 1959. From eighteen, he spent seven years working at the Australian
Broadcasting Corporation, until he decided it was time "to stop dealing with other
people's programs and make some of my own". In 1977, he was granted entry into
Australia's prestigious Film Television and Radio School, completing the three-year
course with Diplomas in Production and Directing.
De Heer's first film was the children's feature `Tail Of A Tiger' (1984), which attracted
both critical and commercial success and played at the Berlin Kinderfest. 'Incident At
Raven's Gate' (1987), de Heer's second feature, was an atmospheric science fiction
mystery thriller, followed by `Dingo' (1990), a musical odyssey that travelled from
outback Western Australia to the streets of Paris starring Colin Friels and jazz legend
Miles Davis in his only film role. `Bad Boy Bubby' (1993) marked de Heer's first
collaboration with Italian producer Domenico Procacci. Thirty-two different
cinematographers were used to chronicle the adventures of a child-man seeing the
world for the first time.
De Heer spent the next two years working on EPSILON (1995) that made extensive
use of motion control cinematography. During a break in filming, THE QUIET ROOM
was shot and garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards from around the world
and was selected for Official Competition in the 1996 Cannes International Film
Festival.
The next film directed by De Heer was DANCE ME TO MY SONG in 1997, and it was
followed by THE OLD MAN WHO READ LOVE STORIES in 1999, THE TRACKER in
2002, ALEXANDRA'S PROJECT -de Heer's tenth film as director-, TEN CANOES
and his last feature film DR PLONK, a black and white silent comedy in the style of
Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. The film closed the Adelaide Film Festival in
2007 and was selected into the Visions Section of the Toronto International Film
Festival.

Wojciech Jerzy Has (1 de abril de 1925, Cracovia; 3 de
octubre de 2000, Łódź, Polonia) fue un cineasta, productor y guionista polaco.
Considerado el mejor adaptador de obras literarias al cine de toda la historia del cine
polaco y junto con Andrzej Wajda, uno de los más relevantes de la Escuela Polaca
de Cine. Casi toda su fama internacional se sustenta en una única e influyente
obra, El manuscrito encontrado en Zaragoza. Otra película que recibió un gran
reconocimiento fue el Sanatorio bajo la clepsidra, que consiguió el Premio del
Jurado del Festival de Cannes de 1973 y el Gran Premio en el Festival de
Trieste de 1974. Estudió Bellas Artes y cine en Cracovia y fue Rector de la Escuela
de Cine de Łódź entre 1990 y1996.

During the wartime German occupation of Poland, Has studied at the Kraków
Business and Commerce College and later clandestine underground classes at the
Kraków Academy of Fine Arts - until it was disbanded in 1943. When the war ended,
he went on to study at the reconstituted Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. In 1946,
Has completed a one-year course in film and began producing educational and
documentary films at the Warsaw Documentary Film Studio, and in the 1950s moved
on to work at Poland's premier filmmaking academy, the National Film Studio, in
Lódz.

seeps into the area, the residents begin to see the halfway house as a blight.
Circumstances begin to conspire against Harbour Lodge: an overzealous estate
agent is determined to purchase the property; a TV reporter cynically exploits their
dilemma; hospital staff use experimental drugs on the inmates; and their community
worker is hapless at best.

Rosemary Riddell es una actriz que se convirtió en juez de distrito, acabando

It shows the time of the choice of a future way for the country. In fact the choice was
already made in October 1964, when conformist climbers and unprincipled egotists
(Volodya) took a lead of the Soviet society and eventually destroyed it. The most
charming and human figure of the movie is Alik, played by the famous Russian bard
Yuri Vizbor. Alik represents the honest and skeptical part of Soviet society, that
didn't have much hope for the bright future and tried to enjoy the life, avoiding ranting
and bargaining with the conscience.

El más famoso cineasta soviético cineasta desde Sergei M. Eisenstein, Andrey Tarkovskiy estudió música y árabe en Moscú antes de matricularse en la escuela de cine Soviética
VGIK. Llamó la atención internacional con su primer largometraje, La infancia de Iván (1962), que ganó el primer premio en el Festival de cine de Venecia. Esto dió lugar a
grandes expectativas para su segundo filme : Andrei Rublev (1969), que fue prohibido por las autoridades soviéticas hasta 1971. Fué mostrado en el Festival de cine de Cannes
de 1969 a las 4 de la mañana el último día, a fin de evitar que ganase un premio - pero ganó uno. Solaris (1972), tuvo un recorrido fácil, siendo aclamado por muchos, tanto en

BIOGRAPHY
The most famous Soviet film-maker since Sergei M. Eisenstein, Andrey Tarkovskiy
studied music and Arabic in Moscow before enrolling in the Soviet film school VGIK.
He shot to international attention with his first feature, La infancia de Iván (1962),
which won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. This resulted in high
expectations for his second feature _Andrei Rublyov (1969)_, which was banned by
the Soviet authorities until 1971. It was shown at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival at 4
o'clock in the morning on the last day, in order to prevent it winning a prize - but it
won one nonetheless, and was eventually distributed abroad partly to enable the
authorities to save face. Solaris (1972), had an easier ride, being acclaimed by many
in the West as the Soviet answer to Kubrick's '2001' (though Tarkovsky himself was
never too fond of it), but he ran into official trouble again with El espejo (1975), a
dense, personal web of autobiographical memories with a radically innovative plot
structure. Stalker (1979) had to be completely reshot on a dramatically reduced
budget after an accident in the laboratory destroyed the first version, and after
Nostalghia (1983), shot in Italy, Tarkovsky defected to the West. His last film,
Sacrificio (1986) was shot in Sweden with many of Ingmar Bergman's regular
collaborators, and won an almost unprecedented four prizes at the Cannes Film
Festival.

Marlen Martynovich Khutsiev es un cineasta soviético nacido en Georgia y conocido por sus películas de culto de los
años 60, que incluyen "I am Twenty" y "La lluvia de julio". En 1986 fue nombrado "artista del pueblo".
Khutsiev estudió cine en el VGIK, graduándose en 1952. Trabajó como director en el estudio cinematográfico de Odessa
desde 1952 a 1958 y trabajó a tiempo completo como director en Mosfilm desde 1965 en adelante.
Su primer largometraje, "Primavera en la calle Zarechnaya" (1956), mostraba la inicial liberalización de la primera
época de Khrushchev y se convirtió en uno de los principales éxitos de taquilla de la década de 1950. Tres años más
tarde, Khutsiyev lanzó a Vasily Shukshin como un nuevo tipo de héroe popular en el filme Dos Fyodores. Sus dos obras
maestras de la década de 1960, sin embargo, fueron criticadas por las autoridades, obligando a Khutsiyev a un silencio

BIOGRAPHY
Marlen Martynovich Khutsiev is a Georgian-born Soviet and Russian filmmaker best known for his cult films from the 1960s, which include I Am Twenty and July Rain. He was
named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1986.
Khutsiev studied film in the directing department at the VGIK, graduating in 1952. He worked as a director at the Odessa film studio from 1952 to 1958, and worked full-time as a
director at Mosfilm from 1965 onwards.
Khutsiev's first feature film, Spring on Zarechnaya Street (1956), incapsulated the mood of the Khrushchev Thaw and went on to became one of the top box-office draws of the
1950s. Three years later, Khutsiev launched Vasily Shukshin "as a new kind of popular hero" by starring him in Two Fyodors. His two masterpieces of the 1960s, however, were
panned by the authorities, forcing Khutsiev into something of an artistic silence. Since 1978, Khutsiev has taught film directing master classes at the VGIK.
His 1991 film Infinitas won the Alfred-Bauer Prize at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival.

Leonid Iovich Gaidai nació el 30 de enero de 1923, en la ciudad de Svobodny, región de Amur de Siberia,

Estudió teatro en el estudio de Drama de Irkutsk. Se graduó en 1947 y fue un actor de este teatro hasta 1949.
Desde 1949-1955 estudió como director de cine en el Instituto Estatal de Cinematografía (VGIK) con Grigori
Aleksandrov, Mijaíl Romm y Ivan Pyryev. A partir de 1955 Gaidai fue un director de cine en los estudios
Mosfilm bajo su mentor Mijaíl Romm. Gaidai utiliza material literario de Ilya Ilf y Yevgeni Petrov, Mikhail A.
Bulgakov, Mikhail Zoschenko y o. Henry entre otros escritores.
Sus primeras películas de la década de 1950 tuvieron poco éxito. En la década de 1960 Gaidai dió con el

Leonid Iovich Gaidai was born on January 30, 1923, in the town of Svobodny, Amur region of Siberia, USSR.
He studied acting at the Drama Studio of the Irkutsk Drama Theatre. He graduated in 1947, and was an actor
of that theatre until 1949. From 1949-1955 he studied as film director at State Institute of Cinematography
(VGIK) under Grigori Aleksandrov, Mikhail Romm and Ivan Pyryev. From 1955 Gaidai was a film director at
the Mosfilm Studios under his mentor Mikhail Romm. Gaidai used literary material by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni
Petrov, Mikhail A. Bulgakov, Mikhail Zoschenko, and O. Henry among other writers.
His early films of the 1950's had little success. In the 1960's Gaidai created the "goldmine" with comedians
Yuri Nikulin, Georgiy Vitsin, Yevgeni Morgunov, and Aleksandr Demyanenko. Comedies with those actors were
the highest-grossing box office hits ever in the Soviet Union.

Vladimir Motyl, nació en Lepiel, Bielorrusia. Se graduó en el Instituto de teatro de Sverdlovsk. Durante 10 años trabajó en varios

Nevertheless he decided to start afresh in cinema, despite having no technical qualifications. Eventually he directed his first film
Children of Pamirs (1963) in Tajikistan. This work was met with public success, as well as earning him the State Prize of Tajik SSR
(1964), and the title of honorary citizen of Dushanbe (1977).

Elder brother of Nikita Mikhalkov, born August, 20, 1937. He entered VGIK-the major state film school
where he studied under Mikhail Romm. At VGIK he met Tarkovsky, they collaborated on Ivan's childhood
and Andrei Rublev. For his length feature debut The First Teacher (1961), he chose the book by Chingis
Aitmatov about the post-1917 Revolution period in the southern Russia. His next film, a black and white
Asya Klyachina's Story although made in 1966 was not released until a decade later because it failed to
comply with the strict requirements of the Russian censorship of the period. A Nest of Gentry (1969) - a
study of the 19 c. aristocracy - was praised for its visual beauty but attacked by critics as mannered.
Konchalovsky's powerful Uncle Vanya (1970) from the play by Chekhov is regarded by many people as
one of the best films in the Russian language ever but it was not until he made his next two films that he
became a worldwide famous film maker. A larger than life love story Romance for Lovers (1974) won an
honor at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and Sibiriade (1979) - a dramatic and realistic story of the lives of
the people of Siberia - was internationally acclaimed and brought Konchalovsky to the attention of
American and European producers. From then onwards his career has been international in scope.
Pleasing critics and cinema-goers worldwide he made English language artful films Maria's Lovers (1984),
Runaway Train (1985), Duet for One (1986) (praised for Max von Sydow's brilliant performance), and
Homer and Eddie (1989) starring Whoopi Goldberg.

Workshop of Individual Direction under Boris Yukhananov. He is a partaker of
festivals in New York, Moscow, St-Petersburg, Edinburgh, Vienna, Graz, Brussels,
Munich, Madrid.
