August Newsletter 2013 - Lakes Entrance Bowls Club
On Tuesday 30th July the Club celebrated the opening of its new main bar. On this evening the Club decided to run
and extended special happy hour from 5pm to 8pm for members and guests to enjoy and provided some light finger
food snacks as well. I am happy to report that we had a very positive response to the new bar; I must say that this
was a huge relief. I had a good idea about what was happening behind the timber screens during the renovation
however when I first walked into the Club on that Tuesday morning and the screens were removed I too was in shock
at just how large our Club appeared. The new bar renovation gives our staff greater tools to deliver greater service
and also access to the main bar has been greatly improved for our customers.
This is a local bar that we can all be proud. The majority of this renovation was performed and provided by local
business and tradesman. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge some of the local people
and businesses for their contribution towards our new Club bar:
Whiters Street Cabinets Geoff and Craig for all the woodwork, Rob Davis our Builder with “I can do anything” Carl &
Gary the gun, Casey Rumble Electrical, Jason Keddie Antennas & cabling, Steve Tanner Plumbing, Kit Kat Concreting,
The Bills Brothers Painting, ABL refrigeration Aaron, Ash and Squeak, Bill at Lakes Slate and Tiles, Lakes Entrance
Glass and Glazing, East coast plastics, Rob Rawlings at Green Energy solution’s and finally the master of design Mr
Ash Carroll of Lake Tyres Beach design. I am also happy to report and thank most of our trades listed above for supporting the Club by signing up as new sponsors.
The bar and gaming staff are certainly happy to be out of the portable bars and are really enjoying their new work
space. In the coming months the Club has plans to introduce a cocktail list and are toying with a number of new entertainment ideas for members and guests to enjoy. Soon some of the Clubs old and tired lounges will be replaced
as we expect the arrival of our new sports bar furniture including new stand up dry bars and stools in the coming
month. Now that we have our new bar it is important to ensure that we have plenty of areas to sit down and relax.
This furniture will greatly improve the atmosphere of the sports bar area.
At the end of August our bowlers are going on a road trip to my previous Club the Howlong Country Golf and Bowls
Club along the beautiful Murray River. It is the first of what I hope is many “Coast V Country” bowls challenges. I
would like to wish all of those going a safe and pleasant trip and may you wipe the ground with them! I sincerely
hope you bring the goods with you as I have been giving them plenty from our end. Next year we can expect a visit
from their bowlers and hopefully this can become an annual tradition. Don’t forget to sell Lakes Entrance as a
holiday destination whilst your there, trust me the fishing is ordinary and they do not have a beach like ours.
If Clubs continue to support each other like we are doing now then the future looks very bright indeed.
Shane Berry
General Manager
After a much anticipated wait the new bar is now open for business. The
bar opened Tuesday 30 July and was praised by everyone. With a red gum
bar, 20 taps and bar stools to come, it is a great improvement.
The rounded bar and the new glass sliding doors open up the Club and
creates the feel of more space.
The members area has new lounges and tables and creates a warm cosy
atmosphere.
Opening night the crowd that gathered had a great time enjoying the
extended happy hour and the tasty treats the kitchen.
We hope you enjoy the new bar and if you haven’t already done so come
down and check it out. We look forward to seeing you soon.

1938 Chris Freeman became President and George Ward Secretary. The Hon. A.E. Lind declared the
season opened.
Life rolled on until 1949. Now we take a leap forward. A town of 1000 persons has started to move
and President Chris Freeman invites some of our ladies to come along and learn to play. By 1950
the ladies have learned enough and under the guidance of Chris Freeman they form the associates
section of the Lakes Entrance Bowls Club. Mrs Oldfield was elected President, Mrs Bowler
Secretary, Mrs Bell Vice President. A limit of 30 ladies was set. Play would be one day per week.
Subscription £1.1.0.per annum.
1951. The greens were opened by Councillor Jack Palmer.
Bob Anderson donated a junior trophy and this was won by E. Horsfield.
This year the first of the Norton Courtenay trophies was played. Ladies started their season with a
bank balance of three pound six.£3.6.0 and finished the season with £23.16.11 after giving the
members £180.0.0.
First Bowling Club at
“Woodbine House”
1940’s
The ladies passed a rule that
players must attend 2 playing
Tuesdays per month or forfeit
their membership unless a
reasonable excuse be given.
Letters were sent to 4 ladies
(names not supplied in this
report) asking for an explanation
for non attendance.
1952. The fees on the greens
were raised by the proprietors of
Woodbine. The Club thought the
fees were excessive and that it
would be far better to spend the
money on their own facilities. So
once again the council was asked to assist. The Club went into recess. The Club charged their
annual subscriptions and the ladies still carried on the social activities. The Bairnsdale Bowls
club made our members and associates honorary members pending the opening of our own
greens.
Acting engineer Alex Archibald made his assessments and in view of the fact that a bore had
previously been sunk in this section and having in mind there had to be room for tennis, bowls
and croquet this section was
chosen.
More history coming next
month.

A 5 year old boy went to visit his grandmother one day.
Playing with his toys in her bedroom while grandma was
dusting, he looked up and said, ‘Grandma, how come you
don’t have a boyfriend now that Grandpa went to heaven?’
Grandma replied, ‘Honey, my TV is my boyfriend. I can sit in my bedroom and watch it all
day long. The religious programs make me feel good and the comedies make me laugh.
I’m happy with my TV as my boyfriend.’
Jokes submitted by Barry Wykes
Grandma turned on the TV and the reception was terrible. She started adjusting the
knobs, trying to get the picture in focus. Frustrated, she started hitting the backside of
the TV hoping to fix the problem.
The little boy heard the doorbell ring, so he hurried to open the door and there stood
Grandma’s minister.
The Minister said, ‘Hello son, is your Grandma home?’
The little boy replied, ‘Yeah, she’s in the bedroom bangin’ her boyfriend.’
The minister fainted.
A doctor called a plumber out in the middle of the night because one of his toilets was
blocked. He insisted it was urgent and that the plumber attend immediately.
Extremely unhappy about it, the plumber arrived, lifted the toilet lid, threw in two aspirins and said, “If things don’t improve call me in the morning.”
A woman hired a house cleaner last year but she wasn’t doing a great job. The woman
called the cleaner into the study and said she was sorry but she had to let her go. She
tipped her $20 and thanked her for her service. As the cleaner was leaving, she threw a
$10 note to the woman’s dog, Lucy.
The woman asked her, “What was that for?” She replied, “Can’t forget my helper. Lucy
has a great tongue and always helped ne do the dishes.’

“Yes it has been a marvellous thing, coming to Australia,”
smiles Sal Britto as he chats in his Lakes Entrance home.
“Here I have a history, prosperity—and a good name—such
as I might not have had in India.” says Sal.
Sal is the former master of the famous dredge the April
Harmer. Sal was the first to take charge of the then newly
commissioned side casting dredge from Melbourne and
recalls the day it was christened (December 21, 1976) by the
lady after whom it was named—April Harmer, wife of Rupert,
then premier of Victoria.
Back in his birthplace of Goa, Sal could never have imagined
the place to which he has now given his heart.
Born in the former Portuguese colony, (500km south of Bombay, India) on June 3 1933. “It’s a beautiful place
with sandy beaches - like Fiji - and was a haven for hippies in the 60’s, especially after Beatlemania and their
guru - people often came for the drugs as marijuana was socially acceptable. Goa was very westernised, even
to the music, but the Portuguese didn’t establish any industry, so the Goans have always had to leave to find
work. They often became seafarers, my father and his father were both in the Merchant Navy.”
So it was the sea for Sal, who at 18 began a new life with the fervent hope of becoming a captain one day. He
had finished the equivalent of VCE at St Sebastian Goan High School - happy years.
He spent five years working his way up from Able Seaman and then went to school to gain his Second Mate
Certificate. He got a job as Third Mate and after two years went for his Mate’s exam.
To better his prospects he went to Hong Kong where he got a job on a Danish flag ship. After obtaining a Mates
certificate in Hong Kong he worked on various cargo ships travelling between China and Japan.
It was aboard the first ship he worked on with the Scandia Company that he visited Australia in 1956, just after
the Olympics and saw Freemantle, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, never dreaming that he would
live in the latter city one day.
“The bars closed at 6pm which seemed strange, but I wasn’t drinking so it didn’t worry me.” Sal said.
“By 1970 I had been nine years in Hong Kong and felt the future was
uncertain. Melbourne friends, Donald Rosario and wife Eleanor sponsored me. I married Eleanor’s sister, Yvonne.
I heard about a new ship the April Hamer, and they asked if I would
like to be the Senior Master.”
A side casting dredge costing three million dollars, the “April” was
based on a design developed by US Army Corps of Engineers for use in
shallow US east coast rivers. It could suck 800 cubic metres of sand
an hour.
Sal was with the April Harmer for 16 years. After the first 14, he was
sent to Melbourne for 18 months or so; the thinking being that he had
been there long enough, and he was sent to the SS Rip on Port Phillip,
and it’s Master came to Lakes.
But the fishermen in Lakes told the Parliamentarians they wanted Sal
back because he was, in their view, the best for the job and finally,
back he came.
“They valued my work. I showed a keen interest
and had no fear of going aground”
Sal says it’s so much better living in Lakes Entrance
than the city.
“There’s always someone to say hello - you don’t
get that response in the city - here you feel you
belong. I enjoy my golf and also there is my
painting. It is a self taught hobby and I am now
learning from other artists.
“As far as my life and my job are concerned it has
been a marvellous thing coming to Australia. There
are no regrets; it’s been more good than bad.”

It is challenging, and some of them might be unknown to people. This test is to
gauge your mental flexibility and creativity. Since it has been developed (in 1996),
it has been found that few people can solve more than half on their first try. Many
reported getting answered long after the test at unexpected moments when their
minds were relaxed. Some reported solving it over a period of several days……
