A BIT OF TRIVIA: Roadrunners has 135 members and average 70 players per
week.
“A CITY GIRL” Jane (Freidenrich) Flaxman was born on June 12, 1919, to Flora
and Milton Freidenrich, in Wilcox Memorial Hospital, which is now Legacy Hospital, in Portland, Oregon. She will be 94 in June! Amazing!
Jane grew up in Portland, Oregon with her twin brothers Robert and Richard.
They were four years younger than Jane. Her parents both worked with the Insurance Business as under-writers for various companies.
Jane graduated from Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon, earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Scripps College in Claremont, California. After
College she worked as a social worker in adoptions and counseling. She also
worked with the Welfare Department and Juvenile Court for Multnomah County
in Oregon.
Jane married Elliott Flaxman in 1947 and continued to live in Portland, Oregon,
where they raised their two children, Joan and Bruce. They both have two sons
giving Jane 4 grandsons. After raising her children Jane returned to the working
world as a social worker, retired in 1975, that is when she learned to play golf.
In July of 1996 Elliott died from prostate, and bone cancer. Jane and Elliott were
married for 49 years.
Jane first came to PDG in 1997 after her husband died and spends three months
at PDG every winter. She is active with the Roadrunners and plays Twilight when
she can find a partner. Jane lives at Summerfield, a Senior Community in Tigard,
Oregon, where she plays golf twice a week.

Artist of the Month
Flo Aydelotte
Scraperboard, called Scratchboard today, began in the mid 19th
Century in England and France. It replaced wood, metal, and linoleum engraving in newspaper printing. This allowed a fine-line appearance that could be photographically reduced for reproduction
without losing quality. In the 1930’s it was the preferred technique
for medical, scientific, and product illustration.
Virgil Finlay from Rochester, New York perfected this technique into
an art form from 1935-1971. He produced 2,600 works of art over
those thirty-five years.
Flo Aydelotte was introduced to scratchboards in an adult beginners art class in 1976 and made four black-and-whites. She then
got interested in doing pastels, and later switched to acrylic paintings on canvas.
Eight years ago she took a class in Sedona, AZ, and learned how
to paint scratchboards with acrylic paints. Flo fell in love with the
beautiful results, and has been painting this style along with canvas
acrylic paintings ever since.
Richard and Flo have been wintering here in Palm Desert, CA for
the past eighteen years with their primary home in Poulsbo, WA.
They love playing golf, and Flo enjoys being a member of the PDG
Art Club.

Every year, many properties are reported to have fruit lying on the ground.
Fruit attracts rats, not only to that particular property, but to neighboring
properties as well.
Rats can crawl under houses and chew

personal experiences.
Beginning in April, the Association will start the process to eliminate two
separate “priority” software programs (one for the point of sale and the other
for the accounting / homeowner software) and convert to a reputable all-encompassing program designed specifically for the Country Club environment.
This will streamline reporting, minimize support and systems costs, as well
as increase efficiency. Fiber optic cable will be installed in the abandoned
irrigation conduit running through the Parkway to the gate in preparation of
installation.
Depending upon SCE’s next phase and timing of same, Mike will schedule
the next two phases of slurry sealing.
So, you can see that while it may seem business slacks off during the summer
months, we will be bustling around. To those who will be leaving us soon, we

You may have noticed that we have had a recent turnover in our Security Personnel. This is not uncommon in this industry and fortunately there is usually
a wide selection of qualified personnel to fill those
We were exceptionally fortunate in our search for replacements, and were
able to hire a total of four new Officers. In addition to hiring these Officers, I promoted two of our Officers to the rank of Sergeant to oversee the
operation of their shifts.
I’ll begin with our new Sergeants.
Kristy Holbert has been with us for about 9 years
and has predominately worked Day Shift for that time.
Kristy has family in PDG and is familiar with many of
our residents. She has proven herself to be dedicated
to the service and well being of our community. She
has been assigned to Swing Shift which offers a whole
different type of atmosphere compared to Day Shift.
This same dedication and professional attitude will
help her to perform her new duties in a manner that
will set the example for those Officers she now supervises.
Jesus Pazos has only been with Palm Desert Greens
for about 2 years. During these 2 years, he has shown
an extraordinary willingness to perform at a level
above what is normally expected of him. His refreshing positive personality and willingness to help, has
resulted in compliments from those residents he has
freely assisted. Jesus has been assigned to Graveyard
Shift, a far step from the hustle and bustle of Day
Shift. This shift offers many challenges for someone
accustomed to be surrounded by people and activity. I am sure that, along
with the quality of Officers we now have on Graveyard, Jesus will find
new ways of channeling his abilities to improve on the ordinary.
Joshua Hernandez was hired at the end of Janu-
ary and assigned to Graveyard Shift. Joshua actually
prefers to work this difficult shift. This is always a
“plus” because there are not that many people that can
adjust to these hours. Joshua comes to us with about 6
years experience in the Security Field. He was quick
to learn our way of doing things and is a welcome
addition to our Team.
Carlos Bonilla, was also hired in January, but was
assigned to Day Shift. This shift is a very busy shift
and requires a lot more from its Officers. Carlos is an
experienced Officer and has the attitude and ability
to meet the challenges this shift demands. He brings
with him a professional, yet courteous way of doing
things that compliments the operation of the shift and
the Department.

Mark Arellano was the third Officer to be hired in
January. He was assigned to Swing Shift. Mark came
to us with the least amount of experience of the first
3 Officers, but he did not lack in any of the qualifications required to fill the position. I saw in Mark, the
ability to communicate freely with those he comes in
contact with. Along with his pleasant personality, and
his communication skills, Mark has learned the pleasure and satisfaction of serving those people that depend on us for their
safety and well being.
Manny Galvan started with us in March. He also
was assigned to Swing Shift. Manny has chosen to
make Security his career. He has worked all different
types of Security Venues and has sought out additional education of related subjects on his own. At the
time of this writing, Manny has not started yet. But,
based on his self initiative and experience, I’m sure
he will be an asset to PDG Security.
As I indicated at the beginning of this article, I am pleased with this transition and I am expecting an even higher degree of Security and Service
from our Officers. Our veteran Officers have accepted these changes and I
have noticed a more positive attitude from them, along with a willingness
to promote an improved way to serve our community

PDG Entertainers
So many thanks go out to all those who helped make our show successful. GREG GOODHEART, Show and Music Director - a vision which
was brought to life, with the help and cooperation of all our members. The
Soloists’ for their beautiful songs; the ‘Salty Flats Choir’ - what lovely voices; Laura and Bill taking us to Atlantic City, then St. Louis where the fun
began. With Patsy Ames in her Hot Air Balloon, we traveled all over the
world and in each spot, were greeted with commentary and song. We certainly had a lovely adventure.
Act I closed with the dance number ‘Mandy’ from the 1940’s with Greg assisting in song and on the piano; the guys were dressed in their finest attire
with bowler hats, arm bands and mustaches to the delight of their ladies who
were finely dressed themselves and in awesome delight with their blue lit
rings which they showed off.
Act II opened with the PDG dancers rendition of the ‘Can Can’..Era....50
yrs. since performing in the Follies in Las Vegas....Canes were prevalent
props, but hey! We could still do the line kicks which definitely pleased the
audiences. The costumes and dancers were outstanding, thanks to our wonderful choreographer Wayne Tibbetts who taught us many things, mostly to
have faith and trust in our abilities.
We were delighted with more songs from our soloists, but the frosting on
the cake had to be when Bill Crowl, our Security Guard, came onstage with
Ukulele in hand to sing a Hawaiian song (or two). If one didn’t notice, Bill
is a true comedian and we never know what he’s going to do next. He didn’t
show us this Comedic side during rehearsals, but WOW’D us in the end.
Thanks Bill. Our audiences loved you. (Are you still touchable?)
The Dancer’s finale of “Don’t Take Away the Music”, Tavares Brothers,
1975 was elegantly performed with the use of scarves, known as the ‘scarf’
dance. We loved the music and loved performing, again with Wayne’s choreography.
My personal thanks to all those who participated in the duties of ticket sales.
Ushers, ticket takers, security, props, lighting, sound, audio, back stage assistance. Every duty is important, no matter how big or small. We all
worked together from the beginning of erecting the stage to the tear down.
THANK YOU.
My heartfelt thanks to Tim Fry for his assistance and patience with me; for
the times I called to make sure the Palm Room was ready for the dancers
on a Monday evening, to making sure we had table cloths for the tables on
opening night, and the many details and questions I had. To the wonderful
Staff of the restaurant for putting in the extra hours to assist the members
and guests. Chef Mark Scher -- Thank you for blessing us with your wonderful pizzas and cookies and for providing all of us with such a feast after
our tear-down on Monday evening. Mark, I recommend your pizzas to
everyone.

Pickleball Club
The “Big Star Night” fund raiser with Ron Schmeck was a sell out and a
huge success. If you where one of the unlucky ones not to have a ticket
to this event, you missed a great time. We had numerous PDG residents
who starred in the Big Star Night show. On behalf of the Pickleball Club,
we would like to thank Rose Hodges as Janis Joplin; Roger Zamudio, Matt
Cutten, and Claude Hanson for doing the hilarious I Think I’m Dancing
With A Man; Mary Hanson and Kathleen Wade who performed Red Neck
Woman; MaryAnna Yoxall was lovely as Anne Murray; Brian Gray who
came in his pj’s to perform Grandma’s Feather Bed; George Lagoe and Julie Putman Almost Got Persuaded, Roger Zamudio and Matt Cullen have
a hit with Doggy Doo; Claudet Andre had all the Thriller moves, I can
still see Roger Zamudio, Matt Cullen, Claude Hanson performing O’Solo
Mio and of course Dixie Lee Lohoff was born to play Barbra Streisand
and Rich McNaught you never looked so good. Who knows maybe the
Vlasic’s will perform with The Dill Pickle Old Time Orchestra. Can’t wait
until next year’s show.
Thirty two members signed up for a Pickleball Clinic given by Pat Carroll,
a 5.0 player, and 2012 USAPA National Gold Medal Champion in Singles,
Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. There were two levels of play, Recreational
Players; for those interested in improving their playing enjoyment, including simple skill techniques for better play and success. Tournament Competition Players, for those wanting to improve efficient techniques on all
shots, court management and shot-selection, plus effective strategies.
The clinic was very helpful and informative. Talking more dinking and
lobs instead of power, what a different philosophy than the way we play
here in the desert. Thanks Pat for putting on a great clinic and thank you
Terry Urrutia for organizing it.
Tip: DON’T POP THE BALL UP! Whatever you do don’t “pop” the ball
up. Many players, both novice and experienced, will hit the ball into their
opponents “wheelhouse.” You may be quick and athletic in returning a ball
that is driven down at you but most often you will lose the point. To avoid
“popping” it up, slow the ball down and drop in over the net (dink) or hit
it straight across the net even if you sometimes don’t get it over the net. At
least you will have a chance at the point.

Readers will remember that this year’s annual PDGCC Charity Golf Tournament
raised funds for the Desert Cancer Foundation. The Shuffleboard Club is pleased

Co-Captain Peggy Clements reports that the DESERT SHUFFLERS Team finished
its season with a hardy win!! Congratulations to our Team. We had a great bunch of
new players along with some very good seasoned ones this Season. There is a signup sheet on the SHUFFLERS bulletin board for next season’s players. We will have
regular practice sessions on Thursday evenings throughout the summer....good place
to cool off and have some fun. She adds: “Hope all you Members, who signed up for
it, had a good time at the DISTRICT SHUFFLERS wrap up-party that PDG hosted
this year.” (The party is going on right now, as this Report is being prepared!)
And Team Play Captain Carol McKinniss reports that the eleven week Friday Members Team Play Tournament completed on February 15, with the Team of Josie Longoria, Kay Olson, Dan Chiernyk, and Roger Gould in the Winners Circle. The Runner-Up Team was comprised of Ray Goodman, Lorna Range, Linda Goodman, and
Sue Soto.
The Club held its Annual Meeting and season wrap-up luncheon on March 22. Highlights of the Meeting, to be reported next month, include the election of the Club
Officers for next year and the announcement of the “Shuffler of the Year” for this just
completed year.
Now that we’ve almost finished with this cold winter, let’s welcome another hot summer, a portion of which we can enjoy in the air-conditioned comfort of PDGCC’s
Shuffleboard facility.

Neighborhood Watch
Our PDGCC Neighborhood Watch meets bi-monthly on the 4th Monday
at 2:30 PM in the Palm Room. However, May 27 is Memorial Day, so the
meeting will be held on May 20 at 2:30 PM.
Sheriff Deputy, Stacy Austin and PDG Security Chief, Bob Russell attend
to present the area crime statistics and to educate and advise us on security
measures. Crime has increased in PDGCC and Sheriff Deputy, Stacy Austin, told us they have a Burglary Suppression Team who is investigating
these crimes. She discussed brochures that she handed out including;
Charitable Donations, Vacation Security and Home Security Hardware.
She warned us to be certain that charitable organizations are legitimate,
before giving. She told us to install cages over security lights, because
criminals unscrew them during the day and then return after dark. She
reminded us to lock doors and windows and to add additional locks to the
standard locks that come on the windows and doors and install alarms or
insert a stick or plastic pipe in the tracks. We can call her at 760-836-1600
to schedule free home security inspections. If she is not in, we should ask
for her associate, Cynthia Munos. Vial for Life forms for your medical
information can be downloaded from the Internet and placed in a zip lock
bag and stored on or in the refrigerator.
COPS Chairman, Ted Bernard and PDG Emergency Response Team Chairman, Bobby Grassi are invited to offer additional helpful information, because the three service organizations would work together in an emergency. Bobby heads the Security Committee and the Emergency Response
Team. He speaks at ERT meetings and Neighborhood Watch meetings to
educate and motivate emergency preparedness. He is well prepared and
he urges everyone to be.
We need more Block Captains and Chairman, Lois Thompson, wants to
encourage neighborhood block parties. If you are going on vacation or
leaving for the season, contact your Neighborhood Watch Captain to watch
your property. Our PDGCC Security team can not be there to observe suspicious activity the way a neighbor can.
Our Neighborhood Watch is honoring our Past Chairman, Judy Muggeridge, with a Memory Block benefiting the Desert Cancer Foundation,
which is being sponsored by our PDGCC 2013 Charity Golf Tournament.
Donations are being accepted and anyone who wants to participate should
give their donation to Treasurer, Peggy Clements. She is in the PDGCC
Phone Directory.

Tennis Club
Our February 17th Tennis Tournament was a big success, as always. The
winners, pictured in this article, are as follows:
Courts 1 and 2: Buzz Kiley, first place; Steve Siegwein, second place.
Courts 3 and 4: Yvonne Barrett and Charlie Hunt tied. Courts 5 and 6:
Kaye Myers and Ron Sorenson tied.
This was the first tournament of the year for Carol Oyler, Cindy Murphy,
and Barb Largent.
We need a good organizer and someone who knows our tennis players to
volunteer to organize PDG tennis activities for next season. If interested,
please contact Sara McCallum or Howard Shaw. Prescott Jones has done
this job for a long time and wants to participate in playing more versus
organizing for the upcoming season. Prescott has done a fabulous job with
this and certainly deserves a break. Thank you Prescott for all that you do.
PDG monthly tournaments are scheduled for the 2nd or 3rd Sunday of the
month. The actual date is decided at the monthly tennis meeting. If you

Men’s Golf Club
Outgoing President Ken Gordon finished his term by winning the Men’s
Golf Club Championship Tournament! Congratulations, and thanks for a
great year Ken.
Several other outgoing Board Members made Election Day fun, as well as
very important. Members-at-Large Jimmy Byrd and Harry Criswell sponsored a no fee, stress-free, “Thank You, ALL Club Members” Tournament
to recognize that all of us contribute to the Club. Outgoing Tournament
Chairman Ken Miracle lived up to his name by making sure there were
plenty of prizes; and a great time was had by all. There was no entry “fee”;
but we did have to cast our ballots for the 2013-2014 Officers in order to
play.
Our February General Meeting featured a presentation by Larry Bohannan,
the well-known sportswriter for the Desert Sun newspaper. While admitting that writing about golfing Professionals was enjoyable for writers, his
main focus was on “the real golfer”. He made a very strong argument that
the Touring Professional Golfers play a different game than the millions
of other golfers around the world. The focus on the entertainment value of
professional golf has made a severe impact on recreational golf, which is
actually slowly decreasing. Of course we were pleased that he noted that
Palm Desert Greens Country Club is unique in the Coachella Valley by
being able to field two shotguns a day, while many other Clubs can’t fill
their field any time. Thank you, outgoing Vice President John Coyle, for
bringing us this guest.
Does slow play bother any of you golfing readers? The SCGA is encouraging its readers to fight slow play by offering an incentive. Here is how
Tony Tilt, our Men’s Golf Club SCGA Representative, addresses that issue
and other reminders for us: “If there are one or two slow players on the
course, we are all affected by their slow play. Why not take the SCGA’s
‘Pace of Play’ Pledge? Sign on to <scga.org/pledge> , take the Pledge and
receive a limited edition bag tag indicating you have taken Pledge. By now
I hope you have taken advantage of the $15 Roger Dunn gift card. Also,
remember as a member of the SCGA you have access to premium courses
at special rates. On the wall in the golf handicap room are the 2013 SCGA
member outings; and each month I post the latest month’s golf news from

It’s time for another chapter of Cactus Cats activities. April is our windup
month beginning with our second Member-Member Play Day Sunday,
April 7th. We hope for a morning tee time so that we can watch the final
day of the Kraft Nabisco tournament. Watch the bulletin board and Channel 98 for further information.
The following day, April 8th, we play the last tournament of the year at
Date Palm CC. Watch the bulletin board for sign ups.
We have had a busy and productive year with new officers, new logo and
shirts and lots of media exposure. There are four avenues we use to communicate with our members: the PDG News Bulletin, the PDG Women’s
Golf site (www.pdgwomensgolf.com), Channel 98 and the bulletin board
in the golf media center. The next project is an e-mail “tree” so that all
members with internet service can be accessed with the click of a mouse.

Two of our PDG team members playing at Shenandoah on Feb. 22nd
placed in the standings. Bonnie Carlson won 3rd for low gross in the B
flight, and EJ Maxwell placed 2nd for low gross in the A flight. Game
well played ladies!
As the active playing season for Cactus Cats winds down and we cats curl
up for the summer’s nap, we want to acknowledge and thank those folks
who made our path easier this year. High paws to Jimi Tidd for PDG
News Bulletin help and for the tournament signs, Tracy in the Association
Office for the marvelous cats on Channel 98, Tim and staff for the menu
and food service and a special thanks to our Golf Pro Bob and his staff
for accommodating our needs. And a special high paw to our dedicated
President, Shirley Ashford who guided us and spent many hours on ByLaws and other thankless tasks, and a very special high paw salute to Ann
Tipton for managing all of the tournament teams and organizing the play
days. Thank you one and all.

Putting Club
*Gus the gopher is the club’s mascot. He lives under the putting green.
“Hey Gus*, you looked real nice in your green bow-tie at our St. Patrick’s Day
party.” I said. “Thanks for inviting me, it was a hoot, loved the cake, but got it all
over my whiskers.”
“Instead of our regular red and white colors, the members wore green too and
there were snacks and lemonade after our putting session, plus a prize for the
specially marked hole for a hole-in-one.”
“Yeah”, Gus snickered. “I managed to knock a few balls out of that one. I’m a
crack up.”
“Our Golf Pro, Bob Breidenbach put on an informative putting clinic for the
members, demonstrating some putting technique that was very interesting. Bob is
very generous in offering his time and skill every year to the club.”
“But sadly, did you know the season is almost over?” I said.
“Good, then I can get some peace and quite. Every Wednesday you guys are out
there, in your fancy red and white outfits, hoot‘in and howl’in, walking all over
my roof.”
“No, it’s been a fun season, and I hate to see it end. We’ve met so many wonderful
folks with all the new members joining us this year.” Gus smiled. “Yeah, I really
had to work hard, just when
they thought they had made
a hole in one, I was there to
knock the putts out of the
holes …what a kick.”

“Oh you’ll love it; there’s a choice of delicious Grilled Salmon or a beautiful
Pork-Tenderloin with scalloped potatoes, seasonal vegetable medley and a mystery desert. Plus you’ll have a chance to win some prizes from a raffle and cash
from the 50/50 drawings. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for guests but you
can come as my special guest. I hear your friend Mabel will be there.”
Gus’s eyes widen, and the fur around his puffy cheeks began to twitch.
“She will huh? Awards Banquet…sounds high-filuten…do I have to wear a suit?”
“No, the theme will be ‘April Flowers’ so everyone can wear casual, Springs
colors as yellows, reds, orange and browns, like bright, flowers.” And our social
committee, Allen and Mary Eiffert are decorating the tables like Spring as well.
They have been doing a great job since they took over the position.”
“People food, yuk…but Spring flowers, now you’re talking good eats.”
“You’ll also get to watch a montage of photos put to music by club President, Don
Risk. It will feature all the club members having a great time during the season
with our parties and playing on the putting green. We have been averaging about
70 members a week coming out.” “You mean on my roof. “Yeah, whatever.”
Speaking of putting, some of our members did very well in February getting
holes-in-one; Ronie Zurojski got 12, Dick Ellis got 11, Darrell Davis and Jeane
Rawson both got 10.”
“Well little buddy, I hope you can make it to all the fun events, I know you’ll have
a great time”
“Yeah, yeah, go chase your little ball…see ya at the dinner.”

Women’s Club
Our monthly General Meeting was held on February 13, 2013 at the Oasis
Country Club. One of things the I like about the luncheon each month is it
gives the members a chance to wear their Sunday best. Lorraine Lawson,
who was accompanied by her visiting daughter Julie, caught my eye with a
beautiful spring print jacket. Georgiana Oliveri also wearing a short jacket,
was very Patriotic in vibrant red and Lee Davis was there in a stunning teal
blue top with her signature scarf. The theme of the luncheon was “Getting to Know George Washington”. The dining tables were adorned with
a silhouette of our First President centered in a golden spray. We dined on
braised boneless short ribs with of course Cherry Pie for dessert. In a period costume, Palm Desert Greens own Lois Whitney, transformed herself
into Martha Dandridge Custis Washington and told intimate stories of her
life with George. It was not only entertaining but very informative.
Our new President, LaDonna Keaton is a legend in her own time. She is
known to most Palm Desert Greens residents as an accomplished businesswoman and a generous benefactor to PDG. LaDonna has always brought
her new homeowners as guests to our luncheons as a way to introduce
the ladies to their new community. LaDonna came to the desert 32 years
ago to attend a friend’s birthday party and stayed. She met her husband,
Chuck, while playing tennis here and actually married him in her home
that they eventually shared together. Between taking care of her disabled
son, she got her broker’s license, started her own business, took care of her
mother and worked for Barbara Sinatra for nine years on her fundraisers
for the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. LaDonna has since lost her son,
her mother and beloved Chuck, but now shares her days with Misti Mae,
her pug of 5 years. She has taken a step back from her business with Lela
Buffington, taking on the day to day operations. LaDonna is still there to
put out the fires but does not show properties anymore. All I can tell you is
that she may be “semi-retired” but has not slowed down a bit.
LaDonna believes a good organization starts with a solid base. This is accomplished by understandable rules. She has read our By-Laws and feels
some could be rewritten to better suit PDG Women’s Club of 2013. One
of the big changes is to the fiscal year. Instead of January to December,
LaDonna would like to see it June to the following May. That would let
women pay their dues before they leave for the summer and allow the incoming Board four months to plan their strategies for the upcoming year.
She would also like to realign the committee chairs into categories and
have one representative attend the monthly board meeting instead of the
whole committee. LaDonna wants to continue with our support of local
charities but allow the general membership to “have a say” where their
money is donated to, not just an Executive Board decision. I want to thank
LaDonna on taking the helm of Women’s Club and I know all the members
will be there to support her.
Please don’t forget that our annual Patriotic Luncheon is on for May. We
will be honoring veterans living in PDG as well as present military. The
cost is $21.00 per person and we are asking all to wear red, white and/or
blue. This event will be at our own PDG Clubhouse.
Next month’s article will report on the General meeting in March and on
the proposed By-Law changes, as well as a look at our new Vice President,
Carol Schaefer.

is already past and with Easter coming in March, most of our snow birds
have already flown north.
The doves will soon be nesting again, but not in my patio. They tried last
year, but soon gave it up when they realized that my home is now the home
of a beautiful cocker spaniel, Cutty who takes her job of guarding my
home very seriously. They now nest in the yard beyond the gates.

PDG Women’s Golf Club Spring Fling
It was a beautiful warm day as a full field of 150 golfers assembled for the annual PDG Women’s Club Spring Fling sponsored by The
La Donna Keaton Team. The players were greeted with coffee and snacks before teeing off in groups of six in a scramble format. This
annual mixer pairs A, B, and C teams which are pretty evenly matched by our head Pro Bob Breidenback. Once their round was finished, the players were treated to a wonderful picnic lunch in a festively decorated room featuring Spring kites and flowers.

CALL TO ORDER: President Dennis Hanks called the Regular Board
Meeting to order at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. The meeting
was held in the Clubhouse.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Parliamentarian Dottie Mills led in reciting
the Pledge of Allegiance.
ROLL CALL: Secretary Dixon noted the following were present: President
Dennis Hanks, Vice President Sherman McKinniss, Secretary Liz Dixon,
Treasurer Mal Sinclair, Director Audrey Green, Director Sara McCallum,
Director Don Risk, Parliamentarian Dottie Mills, General Manager Roberta
Reynolds and Assistant General Manager Sara Fenimore.
PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS:
On behalf of the Association, President Hanks and Secretary Dixon presented Judy Muggeridge with a Certificate of Appreciation for her years of
dedication to the Neighborhood Watch Program in Palm Desert Greens.
Southern California Edison (SCE) will begin Phases 3 and 5 of the underground utility upgrade on February 4, 2013. Estimated date of completion
is March 29, 2013.
Phase 3 will encompass Desert Greens Drive South and Black Horse Way,
to the pick-up point on Reche Lane, including placement of five (5) new
above ground transformers.

PROPERTY OWNER’S OPEN FORUM:
Unit 2 Lot 153 – Brian Gray – requested the Board review Section 14 in the
Rules and Regulations, regarding Transfer of Real Property Interests.
Unit 2 Lot 346 – Beverly Rowles – reported ants around the Main pool; questioned the exit gate of the Main pool by the Golf Shop; mats in the Women’s
shower stalls; and requested the Board not ban smoking in the pool areas.
Unit 4 Lot 131 – Wayne Bednersh – recommended the Board forward a
survey to the residents of PDG, to find out what projects the Long Range Strategic Planning Committee should be looking into; and requested a drinking
fountain be installed near the Pickleball courts.
Unit 2 Lot 65 – Debbie Sauer – questioned if the benches will be replaced in
the green belt area across from the Frank Sinatra gate.
SECRETARY’S REPORT:
Secretary Dixon moved to approve the Minutes of the Regular Board
Meetings held on December 18, 2012 and January 15, 2013, as written.
The motion was seconded by Director McCallum and carried (7 For:
President Hanks, Vice President McKinniss, Secretary Dixon, Treasurer
Sinclair, Director Green, Director McCallum, and Director Risk; 0 Nay).

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT:
Good news! The Retention Basin Violation has been signed off by Palm Desert’s Code Enforcement. Non-organic materials have been removed, the grade
has been returned to its natural slope, and Bermuda grass seed has been sewn
to assist its return to its native condition. Soon Mario will install new, locked

gates. The City of Palm Desert and the Association must preserve this sight,
as its sole purpose is to collect excess rain water in case of flooding.
We are already seeing a return on investment as irrigation water costs are
declining, thanks to the efficiency of the new system.
The patio ice machine is down. It was scheduled for replacement in the 2014
Reserve Study. Depending upon Mike’s findings as to repair costs vs. replacement, we may be required to move its replacement forward to this fiscal year.
Upon the annual inspection of our pools by the County of Riverside Environmental Health Department, we were notified that the fencing at the Southwest
Pool, must be brought up to code (narrowing spaces between the vertical
bars), and it must be replaced. New fencing installation is scheduled around
February 1st. At that time, the pool will be closed. Watch Channel 98 for
updates.
Sara will be finalizing the Events Calendar once the Board approves the Golf
Calendar. Once the 2000 pieces of the puzzle are all in place, she will send
facility confirmation letters. Please review them upon receipt and notify her
if you have any questions.
Tickets are still available for the February 5th Wine Pairing Dinner. Mark and
Tim do a tremendous job of providing a delectable 4-course dinner, paired
with the perfect wine. Not many clubs have the talent we have to carry this
off. But we do; you will not be disappointed, I guarantee it.
Be sure to reserve Saturday, March 9th, when we will present the dinner
show, Jazz at the Greens featuring Yve Evans, a noted Jazz artist. Pre-show
music will begin around 5 pm with the first act beginning after dinner at 7:00.
Dessert will be served during intermission, and Act 2 will begin around 8:20.
We expect this to be a sell-out. Tickets will go on sale at the Administration
Office on Monday, February 4th ($40 inclusive, no host bar).
Palm Desert Greens Association was honored to be featured on the cover in
a 3-page spread in the January issue of the Quorum Magazine, a Coachella
Valley Community Association Institute Magazine.
During the month of February, the Association will receive an on-site visit
from our Reserve Study Analyst. The Reserve Study is updated every year,
two of which are merely reviews of the Association’s assets. Every third year
our Professional Reserve Specialist must conduct a visual, on-site review.
You have heard us mention the Davis-Stirling Act in many of our conversations or articles. The Legislators felt it should be simplified so that it included
Corporate and Civil Code portions that affect HOA governance. And it went
from a small binder to a large 3-ring notebook size document.
Earlier this month your Board Members, Sara and I attended Guralnick &
Gilliland’s 27th Annual Legislative Update which covered key issues in the
newly Amended Davis-Stirling Act. We found that we are already compliant
in most areas, and will have until January of 2014 to incorporate those new
legislative changes.
It has been an amazing experience working with the Committee Chairs during
the past year. I commend you for spending endless hours listening to everyone’s suggestions, planning projects, and communicating needs back to the
Board and staff. Thank you for your support and unending energy. Let me
know if there is any way I can be of assistance to you.
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS: (Called by Vice President McKinniss)
ARC: Chair Jerry Thomas reported the Committee has noticed increased violations on properties with improperly stored items on patios/carports. Please
refer to the CCRs, Article 5-5.3.21 which states “Shall not keep, or maintain
any fixture, personal property or other object upon any courtyard or patio
which interferes with the enjoyment of adjacent Lots, courtyards or patios,
which may be in derogation of any Rules duly adopted by the Board”.
And the Architectural Guidelines, Category B – 6 which states “Patio Furniture… Must be in good taste and in harmony with the Association. Items
displayed in the front yard, front patio, common areas, or areas visible from
the street, may be subject to approval by the ARC. Note: Overstuffed furniture shall not be used as patio furniture or be left in patio or driveway areas
at any time”.
The deadline to remove Holiday decorations was January 15, 2013.
Any exterior improvements must first be approved by the ARC.
The Committee meets each Tuesday at 8:30 am in the Administration Office.
Clubhouse/Recreation Committee: Chair Beverly McGill reported the Committee met on January 2, 2013.
The PDG Singles will be dining at the Agua Caliente Casino on January 28,
2013.
The Tennis Club will be holding their annual Valentine’s Ball on Saturday,
February 9, 2013.
Pickleball is 70 members strong, and will be holding an Entertainment Show
on February 17, 2013.
The PDG Entertainers will be holding their annual performances on February 23, 24, and 25, 2013. Tickets will be on sale February 1 and are $15 per
person.
New Dimensions will be hosting a New Homeowners Reception on January
28, 2013 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. This is by invitation only.
The Committee toured the Clubhouse and noted containers for the Cyprus
trees at the entrance to the Lounge were in need of replacement. Thank you,
Mary Lou Lynch and Joan Sorensen for donating nice, new baskets for the
trees.

Finance Committee: Chair Ken Dobson reported the Committee met on January 17, 2013 to discuss the December 2012 financials.
At the end of December 2012, the Reserve Fund had a balance of $533,090;
New Construction $174,000, and Contingency $97,000, for a total of $804,000.
The Association contributes $76,258 monthly to the Reserve Fund. By June
30, 2013, $457,000 will have been added to the Reserve Fund, for a total of
$990,000 before expenses. Approximately $115,000 has been budgeted to
be expended out of the Reserves Fund, leaving us with $875,000 on June 30,
2013 without any emergency expenditures.
The Budget Committee will conduct their first meeting on Thursday, January
24, 2013 and will meet weekly thereafter until the 2013-2014 Budget is ready
to be presented to the Board of Directors for approval.
Food & Beverage: Chair Greg Goodheart reported the Committee met on Jan-

The Committee discussed prices for group luncheons. Food and Beverage
Manager Tim Fry and Chef Mark Scher are doing their best to present fair and
equitable prices for these luncheons. We are aware that we cannot please all
of the people all of the time. Still, we understand why Tim and Mark move in
the direction they do, and we support them.

A letter was received from the President of Women’s Golf,
regarding the low attendance at the Divot Party held on
February 14, 2013. Her hopes are that eventually, everyone will fill their divots and these parties will not be necessary. She encourages all golfers to attend the next Divot Party.

A letter was received from a homeowner questioning no
smoking in the pool areas, changing batteries in
transponders, regulations against foreign flags, and
information on the PDG Website. The Board responded to the letter.
•
A note of praise for Tim Fry, Chef Mark and their staff for a job well done for the Valentines Dance, and a thank you to the Board of Directors, was received from the Tennis Club.
•
A letter regarding a request submitted for a drinking
fountain by the Tennis Courts/Pickleball Courts was
received. The homeowner believes a drinking fountain is
un warranted, as the Golfers and Tennis players have been
carrying their own water with them for years.
•
A homeowner suggested a Time Warner receiver box be placed in the Lounge and Golf Shop, so the Golf Channel may be observed.
•
The PDG Entertainers thanked the office staff for all of the helpfulness, kindness, and special things they do for the Club.

A note was received from a homeowner stating how
impressed they are with the Food and Beverage staff and Tim Fry. With the Clubhouse and Lounge renovation three (3) years ago, the homeowner feels the Lounge and
Clubhouse look just as good as it did when it re-opened. Tim projects a “country club image” with the way he dresses and speaks to patrons. Palm Desert Greens is lucky to have him.
