May 2015 - Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church
THE SHEPHERD’S VOICE
May
2015
What I’ll Be
Doing in Israel
I’ll be taking the second part of my sabbatical this month, focusing on something that will be very exciting for me
and which promises to make a real impact on my teaching and preaching. Beginning May 8th, I will have the privilege
of taking a study tour of Israel. The trip
is led by Brad Gray, a pastor from Michigan,
who has done this many times. I’ll be with a
group of 33 pastors and laypeople. No, Beth
won’t be going with me. She spent most of a
summer in Israel as part of a college Bible
class. I’ve learned that my roommate will be a
music minister from New York state – a fellow
guitarist – which should be fun.
Why haven’t I gone there before now? Going to the Holy Land is part of most pastors’
‘bucket lists.’ But for a long time, I didn’t have
much interest in making an Israel trip. So many
of the trips I heard about were more like a “bus
tour of Israel’s gift shops.” That didn’t appeal
to me. If I were to go to Israel, I’d want to go
with serious Bible students and study; not be a
tourist.
What changed? About five years ago, I
learned about a very different kind of Israel
trip. These trips were serious study expeditions,
where the participants were putting on their
hiking boots and walking in the footsteps of
Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Jesus, Peter,
and more. They were learning to understand
the Hebrew culture and the land. As they did
this, they found the Bible opening up — so
many of the details of the Bible make much
more sense when one understands the culture,
the language and the land. A friend of mine,
Pastor Bruce Greenough (who has been a guest
preacher here several times) had been on one
of these trips, and came home changed. He
said “Before I went, the Bible was in black and
white; after I returned, it was like seeing the
Bible in living color.” His testimony moved my
heart, and from that point, I looked for an opportunity to make this trip.
Where I’ll be going. I don’t know! Each day,
Brad Gray will be teaching us much like a rabbi
would teach his students. We will begin by
praying as Jesus prayed, and then we will
“follow the rabbi.” Brad explains it like this:
You will not know where we’re going or when we’ll
be getting there. You will be invited to enjoy the
journey. In life, we do not know what tomorrow will
bring. We are simply invited to take each moment
one step at a time. And so we walk, seeking to follow in the footsteps of our Rabbi and Messiah Jesus.
For as the text states in 1 John 2:6, “Anyone who
claims to follow Christ, must walk as Jesus
walked.” You will be challenged physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Our preparation. Because this is a study tour, we
are all studying. We have an extensive pre-course
curriculum, including two books, dozens of on-line
articles and nine online lectures. I have about numerous Hebrew words to memorize, and lots of
geography and history. Much of this I learned in
school, but this refresher is very helpful.
How you can help. Please pray for me each day,
from May 8th to May 22nd. Pray for safe travel
and protection from illness. Pray for my feet – I’ll
be walking three to seven miles a day around rugged terrain with temperatures up to 100 degrees.
Pray for my heart, that I will be open to whatever
it is that God wants to show me. Pray for our
group, that we would become an encouraging
community of disciples. Pray for Brad, our leader,
that God will use him to bear fruit in our lives.

Serenity Inn
By Lorraine Bahr
Thanks to Becky Reilly, Kim Sukow, Debi Mueller, Dan
Berg, and Lorraine Bahr, the residents at Serenity Inn
had a wonderful meal of chicken and beef tacos, Spanish
rice, refried beans, chips and salsa, fruit salad, Mexican
fried ice cream, and of course Piggly Wiggly chicken! Everyone had plenty to eat with leftovers for lunch
the next day.
A group of SOTH members sorted shoes for Soles for
Jesus on March 31st. In the photograph, they are surrounded by boxes of shoes (8,000 pair) that are going to
be shipped to Boswana. In April, Sandy Gunderson’s
daughter traveled to distribute shoes to the people of Africa and took 90 pairs of shoes donated from SOTH.
Please consider preparing part of the meal for future visits to the Inn. Upcoming dates are May 6, June 3, July 1.
Your culinary contributions are always appreciated by the
men at the Inn.

Serving Opportunities
The Impact of Volunteering
By Deb Ratzel
But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will
be rewarded. 2 Chronicles 15:7 (NIV)
Did you know that National Volunteer Week was designated and celebrated in 2015 from April 12-18th? There are
volumes of hours and people performing works of volunteerism at SOTH. To successfully conduct a worship service on a Sunday, 25-50 volunteers, including musicians,
are needed. Information in the volunteer ministry section
of the Shepherd of the Hills 2014 Annual Report showed a
total of 2,402 active volunteer roles at work in 2014. This
illustrates the great need for and magnitude of impact that
volunteers have within the ministries at Shepherd of the
Hills. Thousands of hours of serving resulted in a successful year of outreach, worship and music, missions, fellowship, and children and youth ministries, to name a few areas. And so far in 2015, we are on the same track of selfless
serving resulting in gifts being used and hearts being
reached.
Though National Volunteer Week is celebrated nationwide
from April 12-18th, the appreciation of the many volunteers at Shepherd of the Hills is on-going. When you volunteer and use your God-given talents and skills, God is
glorified and our church is lifted up. The appreciation experienced, though at times tangible in the form of a thank
you note, phone call or email, most importantly appears as
a personal connection with the one who gave you gifts to
Page 6
serve. So while one week is designated nationally, spiritually you are recognized and appreciated every day, hour, minute, and second that you serve your Lord in growing His
kingdom through you. His recognition is the greatest
recognition you can receive and is ever present.
If you would like to learn more about the spiritual gifts
that God has given you, take Lifeway Christian Resources’
Spiritual Gifts Survey, located on the SOTH website http://www.shepherd-hills.com/lifeway-resourcesspiritual-gift-survey/. Copies are also available on the Welcome Center.
At Shepherd of the Hills, we offer many different ways to
serve the Lord in our congregation and in our community.
Tell us about your gifts, talents, and volunteer interests by
completing the ‘Hearing God’s Call to Serve’ form to connect with the many serving opportunities at SOTH. The
form can be found on our website at http://
www.shepherd-hills.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/
Hearing-Gods-Call-to-Serve-INTEREST-form.pdf or at
the Welcome Center.
For more information or to discuss the results of these
forms, contact Deb Ratzel, Assistant for Volunteer Ministries at [email protected] or 262-744-9134.
“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have
been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many
things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ Matthew 25:23

Easter Decorating
from page 1
ISRAEL
By Becky Reilly
My hope. I look forward to be able to read God’s Word
with greater understanding and greater delight. I hope
that my teaching will be more vivid, helping our congregation to see in their minds what God is doing in scripture. No doubt, I’ll have a few helpful pictures, but I
promise not to show them every week! In June, I will
giving a couple open forums about my trip, one on a
Sunday morning, one on an evening. Above all, I hope
that the people of the Bible, and the God we worship,
will be even more real in my life.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! Many
thanks to all of you who participated the Saturday before
Easter to decorate our church! We had a record attendance of helpers! Everything looked fresh and new and
beautiful and the flowers smelled wonderful! We finished
in record time so many of us could join Pastor Jay at Holy Hill to walk the Stations of the Cross. Thank you again
for taking time from your busy schedules to share your
decorating talents.
I thank our leaders for giving me the sabbatical leave to
be able to take this trip, and I cherish all of your prayers!
† Pastor Jay
Music Appreciation
Page 7
In Sincere Appreciation for your Gift of Music
Our congregation has been blessed to have many musical people as part of our church family that are willing to share
their talents at all of our worship services. From September through May, our vocal, handbell and children’s choirs inspire us with their beautiful music at our 8:30 am traditional worship service. On the third Sunday of the month, our
Gospel Worship Group leads this service. Our “Joyful Noise” men’s quartet and “Peter’s Players” brass ensemble
makes regular contributions at this service and other special services as well.
The praise band, “Spoken For” is a group of volunteers that leads our 10:30 am Sunday and Monday evening contemporary worship services year round. Supporting the Sunday service, is a group of technicians that operate the sound and
video booth. In addition to all the above, we also have special instrumentalists who share their musical talents on occasion. Music Appreciation Sunday is May 10th, so please take a minute to personally thank all of these people that enhance our worship experience.

Additional Giving Options
By Gary Strohwig
At Shepherd of the Hills, we’re always looking for ways to
meet the needs of our congregation as we grow. In addition, we look at ways we can grow financially and continue to support and grow our mission work. To help meet
our congregation’s needs and requests, we’ve added an
online giving option. On our church website http://
www.shepherd-hills.com/, there is an “Offering” tab that
you can use to make a one-time donation. We now have
three giving options for our members and/or guests.
Envelopes – Members and Non-Members may use
weekly envelopes for tithing. Areas to give are designated
on the envelope for the General Fund, Growth Fund or
Other. The option for Other can be used for memorials
or designated benevolent areas.
Simply Giving – Member and Non-Members can have
their tithing deducted from their checking/savings account on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly selection. You
may select what area/areas to give to just as the envelope
option provides. To tithe through Simply Giving, an authorization form will need to be completed and can be
obtained from the Welcome Table or church office.
Online Giving – This option is geared toward Members
and Non-Members that don’t write checks or don’t want
to sign up for the continuous auto-deduction from their
bank account. You can select what area to give to. You
can give anytime that’s convenient for you whether you’re
at home, at work, on vacation or watching your child at
their weekend sporting event. You do need to have a
PayPal account to use the Online Giving option.
If you have any questions about our giving options or
what is the best giving option for a one-time larger donation, please let me know. I’d be happy to help and answer
any questions at [email protected].

Geraniums for Pentecost
Sunday, May 24th is the Day of Pentecost. On this day
we celebrate the great gift of the Holy Spirit, who claims
us in the sacrament of Baptism, calls us to the sacrament
of Holy Communion and sends us out to proclaim the
Good News to all.
Red is the liturgical color for the
day. We are asking you to purchase
geraniums to beautify the worship
space and to then be planted outside
of the church. It would also be appropriate for worshippers to wear
red on May 24th. SOTH Gardeners,
watch for a sign-up sheet on the kiosk to volunteer for
planting geraniums after May 24th!
Cost for geraniums:
$3.75 each and order forms will be available in your Sunday bulletin and at the Welcome Desk at church. Drop
off your form and payment in the church office or offering plate. Deadline to order geraniums is May 17th.
Are You CPR Certified?
Shepherd of the Hills is asking that if
you are CPR certified, to please contact the church office. We would like
to create a list of people who we
know to seek out in an emergency
situation. The defibrillator is on the
wall at the church entrance next to
the office.
Contact the church office at 262-628-2633 or email at
[email protected].
Tornado Safe Areas at SOTH
In the event of a tornado warning, Shepherd of the Hills
has designated safe areas for access.
The safe areas are the...

Servant’s Heart: Climb for a Cause
By Carol Wehr
Simple Hope’s “Climb for a Cause 2015” was a trip I will
never forget. I have a special connection with each of my
fellow climbers not only because of the 16+ days we
spent together but because of the unique experiences we
shared on this journey. Twenty-four people joined with
Karen Puhl, Pam Schwalbach and Charles Mpanda to
spread the message that hope and help are needed in Tanzania and to raise money for Simple Hope’s work with
those there who struggle daily.
Page 11
Simple Hope Packathon
Asante sana (Thank you)
Prayers for nutritious food were answered through your
hearts, hands and feet of the SOTH congregation. A
community of more than 100 volunteers gathered to assemble 35,000 meals to help feed the Hadzabe bushman
and children at Montonyak Orphanage in Tanzania.
Many thanks to all who organized the event, assembled
meals, assisted with the event set-up and clean up, unloaded and reloaded the truck or helped wherever needed.
God bless!
The Hadzabe, though they had no possessions to share,
gave of themselves, inviting us into their hut to share the
joy of a new baby or taking us out to show how they hunt
for food and then offering to share it. On the mountain,
the 98 guides, porters and cooks gave tirelessly. Not only
did they carry our food, shelter, tables and chairs, gear/
clothes and potties, but they boiled water for us daily, set
up and tore down the campsite each day, woke us in the
morning with hot coffee and tea and a hot breakfast, prepared our lunch and dinner, sent us off each morning
with song and dance and offered sincere encouragement
and caring assistance to whomever needed it whenever
they needed it.
In King ‘Ore, the school children greeted us with beautiful songs and the women cooked us a fabulous meal. We
witnessed their success with the goat project Bill Mascotti
funded in honor of his wife, Susan, and they proudly
shared their canning project growth and plans. Too often
when I think of Christian giving, what first comes to mind
is money or things we give to those less fortunate than
ourselves. It is easy to give when you have much. This trip
reminded me that giving of yourself when you have little,
as many we met in Tanzania did, can be the greater gift.

SUMMER BOOK READ
Mary Jo Burkemper invites you to read this
summer’s selection, I am Malala: The Girl
Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot By
the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai.
When the Taliban took control of the Swat
Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out.
Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and
fought for her right to an education. On
Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at
point-blank range while riding the bus home from school,
and few expected her to survive.
Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an
extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern
Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York.
At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest
and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.
I AM MALALA will make you believe in the power of
one person's voice to inspire change in the world.
A book discussion will be scheduled sometime in July at
the Burkemper’s home.
The book is available at
bookstores and your local library.
Join us to receive a blessing of
safety, in the parking lot near the Pavilion, following each
of the worship services.
Men’s Breakfast
Next Meeting: Friday, May 1st at 7:00 am. The men
of Shepherd of the Hills have the opportunity to convene

‘Fore Faith’ is Back!
The weather is warmer and the grass is greener, so if you
like to golf, join the fellowship group, ‘Fore Faith’ as they
start up again in May!
This group will meet once a month on a Sunday afternoon to golf 9 holes at the Kettle Hills Golf Course in
Richfield. The date for the Sunday in May is yet to be determined, so stay tuned for this information in a future
bulletin or all-church email.
This group has been golfing and enjoying fellowship
since it formed in July of 2014 as a result of SOTH member Rolf Nohe’s interest in starting this fellowship opportunity
for Shepherd of the Hills church
family members. Anyone who
likes to golf is welcome – this is
not a professional league. So
bring your family and invite your
friends and neighbors!
To allow for the reservation of tee times, please sign-up
on the kiosk in the church Narthex. If you have any questions, contact Rolf at [email protected] or the church
office at 262-628-2633. Weather permitting, ‘Fore Faith’
will continue through October and reconvene in the
spring of 2016.
Consider enjoying God’s beautiful outdoors while getting
to know others at Shepherd of the Hills who share an
affinity for the game of golf!

Please consider bringing treats to church on a Sunday
according to your last name. Simply place your preplated treats on one of the café tables in the Narthex.

Starting on May 31st, an appointment table with available dates and times will be located in front of the member picture board in the Narthex. Sign up to make an
appointment in the months of June
and July, choosing from 19 dates
covering both week days and the
weekend, to accommodate your
schedule.
The photos will be taken by volunteer photographers from Shepherd
of the Hills, using their artistic gifts
to capture you and your family in a relaxed and casual
photo for posting both in the directory and on the picture board located in the Fellowship Hall. Please take 15
minutes of your time to be a part of this important project!
Why is an updated directory important? It has been five
years since the last SOTH directory was produced and
an update allows for the inclusion of the many new
members and visitors who faithfully participate in worship here. It is a means of communication that helps us
to connect to one another and assist with ‘a name to a
face’ recognition at fellowship events. We are a growing
congregation with a mission of building community, and
we want you to be an ‘identified building block’ – a
member of our community of faithful believers in God’s
love and grace.
Would you like to volunteer? We need assistance with
greeting and checking people in at registration and being
a photographer’s assistant. Sign up at the appointment
table to volunteer your time in helping with one of these
volunteer positions at as many dates you are available.
If you have questions, please contact Deb Ratzel at [email protected] or call at 262-628-2633.
