Page 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, S S “C Msgr. T. Mark Condon E ” It doesn’t seem possible that so much me has passed since Easter Sunday but we have reached the Seventh Sunday of Easter having celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension on Thursday and now just one week away from the celebra on of the Solemnity of Pentecost. This Seventh Sunday of Easter, which falls between two great feasts, should not be missed – its message is an important one; it tells us that our friendship with Jesus Christ is communion with the Father through the power of the Holy Spirit. And so even as we have celebrated the glorious Ascension of Christ and his taking his place at the right hand of the Father we rejoice because he has made us a part of God’s own life and because he remains with us, consecrates us to the truth, and calls us friends. As we pray for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, our Holy Father Pope Francis, reminds us of the great gi s that openness to the promp ng of the Holy Spirit brings. A Va can News Summary of a recent media on of the Holy Father reminds us of the importance of courageously following the path of proclama on of the gospel of Jesus Christ: Here, then, is the lesson for every believer: ‘the path of Chris an courage is a grace given by the Holy Spirit.’ There are indeed ‘so many paths we could take, which even give us a certain courage,’ for which one could say: ‘Look what a brave decision they made!’ All of this, however, ‘is an instrument of something greater: the Spirit.’ And ‘if the Spirit isn’t there, we can do many things, a great deal of work, but it is pointless. For this reason, the Pope concluded, the Church ‘prepares us to receive the Holy Spirit.’ Now, ‘in the celebra on of the mystery of the death and Resurrec on of Jesus, we can remember all of salva on history,’ which is also ‘our own salva on history,’ and we can ‘ask for the grace to receive the Spirit, that he give us true courage to proclaim Jesus Christ.’ As we celebrate the Seventh Sunday of Easter and prepare for the great feast of Pentecost, we unite ourselves with the prayer of Jesus and ask to always be open to following him ever more faithfully and joyfully. In our gospel reading from Saint John we are privileged to listen in as Jesus prays aloud. This seventeenth chapter of John’s gospel holds the great high priestly prayer of Jesus. Jesus prays to his Father asking that all of those who are his own in the world be drawn into the rela onship that he shares with his Father. This is access to the divine life that Jesus has won through his victory over sin and death. John’s gospel sets the scene for this prayer and gives us these moving words of the Lord Jesus: “Li ing up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: ‘Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one’” (John 17:11). The mission of Jesus was not to be just another prophet or teacher or interpreter of the law. As God’s own Son, Jesus Christ brought about salva on through his death on the cross and his resurrec on and now all who believe in him share the gi of eternal life. Jesus now prays that his Father will consecrate these disciples, these followers of his, to the truth: “Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth” (John 17:17-18). The truth is the word of life that Jesus preaches and that truth is sustained by living in communion, friendship with Jesus Christ. Our faith is not a series of abstract truths or beliefs that we give our assent to. Rather our faith is a personal rela onship with a real person, Jesus Christ. Because of our faith in the Lord Jesus we have hope in him and hope for our eternal future and we are confident that his love which we know in this world and which we share with others is our promise that we are always united to God. In a 2006 homily, Benedict XVI spoke on the meaning of faith and the meaning of truth: Faith is a deeply personal and human act, an act which has two aspects. To believe means first to accept as true what our mind cannot fully comprehend. We have to accept what God reveals to us about himself, about ourselves, about everything around us, including the things that are invisible, inexpressible and beyond our imagina on. This act of accep ng revealed truth broadens the horizon of our knowledge and draws us to the mystery in which our lives are immersed. Le ng our reason be limited in this way is not Continued on Page 5... Page 4 The Angelus www.holyangelscommunity.org Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4) something easy to do. Here we see the second aspect of faith: it is trust in a person, no ordinary person, but Jesus Christ himself. What we believe is important, but even more important is the One in whom we believe. We pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost so that our hearts are re-consecrated to the truth of the gospel and the divine life it calls us to. We pray that the power of the Holy Spirit will renew in us our openness to our friendship with the Lord Jesus and the will of the Father. In our second reading from the first Le er of Saint John we hear these beau ful words: “Beloved, if God so loved us, we must also love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfec on in us” (1 John 4:11-12). Our love of God will always increase the love that we have to share with others. We pray that through the power of the Holy Spirit we, more and more, live according to the example of our Savior who opened his arms on the cross for us and opened the gates of eternal life for us. F E R A O L Q P ,B Bishop Serratelli has appointed Father Edward Rama as Administrator of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Branchville, effec ve June 11, 2015. As we bid farewell to Father Ed, we thank him for his faithful service to our parish. On June 7th we will celebrate a Farewell Mass at 11:30 for Father Ed followed by a light recep on in Saint Francis Hall. As we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Chris , the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, we thank Father Ed for all that he has done to build up the Body of Christ in our parish. We will miss him but we are proud that he has been given this new responsibility of administering a parish where he will one day be pastor. We pray for Father Ed and commend him to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Holy Angels. R F L A. C F S O P M T M 23-24, 2015 A I O M 23, 2015, R M .L A. C P J C M R A J. S , S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D., B P . It has been a joy and a privilege for our parish to have shared in Deacon Lem’s prepara on and forma on for the priesthood. Deacon Lem has been a blessing to our parish and he will be a gi to all of those whom he will serve as a priest in the future. We pray for Deacon Lem in a special and very intense way as he prepares for ordina on next week. We pray especially during this season of Easter that it will give him joy and peace as he prepares to consecrate his life and future to the Lord and his Church on his Ordina on Day. As the Risen Lord stands in the midst of his disciples and encourages them with the words, “Peace be with you” (Luke 24:37) before sending them on their mission, so may Deacon Lem know that same peace and be filled with the powerful gi s of the Holy Spirit on the day of his First Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving, the Solemnity of Pentecost. I know that Deacon Lem relies upon the strength that comes from your prayers. A P ,C , S , L S P 10:30 . O M 24, 2015, S P ,F L C F S M O L H A .
