Ms. Venega McArthur applied for the Students Against Violence Everywhere Grant (SAVE). The
grant was presented to Purnell Swett High School on November 10, 2014. The grant was
awarded by Allstate Foundation to conduct school safety and teen safe driving activities.
Thank you Ms. Venega!
Mrs. Nancy Hunt and Mr. Boss Locklear applied for a Bright Ideas Grant. They were rewarded
$1800. This grant will be used to build a fitness trail around campus.
Thank you Mrs. Nancy and Mr. Boss!
Congratulations to Lady Rams senior tennis player Kali Strickland on being named the October
recipient of The Mountaire/Civitas Media Scholar Athlete of the Month Award given out by The
Robesonian Newspaper.
Kali, the daughter of Janice and the Rev. Steve Strickland, carries a 3.99 un-weighted gradepoint average. She is a marshal and involved in several clubs and organizations on campus.
On the tennis court, Kali finished a stellar career with 80 wins (47 in singles and 33 in doubles),
including 21 her senior season (14 in singles and seven in doubles). She was All-Conference
three times and qualified for Regionals all four years.
Ms. Leslie Harris, Civics teacher and administrative intern, received the special distinction of
National Board Certification on November 15. She began the process in March 2013, working
diligently for over a year to video tape classes, collect samples of student work, complete her
written portfolio, and study for the exam. To Ms. Harris, the hardest part of the process was going
to the National Boards Bootcamp workshop in February and being told that two of her entry
commentaries were bad. She said, "I wanted to cry because I spent my whole Christmas break
working on those papers, but I knew that this process was not going to be easy and that the
coaches were there to help me."
Ms. Harris has been teaching at Purnell Swett High School for 8 years. She earned a MA in Social
Studies Education (2011) from UNCP and is currently working on a Masters of School
Administration (May 2015) at UNCP. Ms. Harris also said, "Attempting to complete National Boards
and an MSA degree at the same time was the craziest thing I have ever done. I felt like I was
losing my mind every day, but it all worked out in the end."
Her ultimate goal is to obtain an Ed.D in Educational Leadership from UNCW and become the NC
Superintendent of Public Instruction.
