Director’s Message
Having enjoyed the hot, hazy, lazy days of summer,
Town of Arnprior Recreation Staff are looking forward
to a beautiful fall with cool, clear days and lots of
activities to keep us busy.
Town residents can rest assured that our staff have
been putting their heads together to set up programs
designed to accommodate all of ages and abilities. We
are sure you will find something to keep you active but
if you don’t see something in our programming that
you would like to try, please feel free to let us know.
Our “Seniors on a Roll” Program is well under way
with programming designed specifically for our older
resident population. Continue to watch for even more specific programs, while joining in the fun of Pickle
Ball, Nordic Walking, Carpet Bowling and Strength Programs.
The Recreation Department will now have an equipment borrowing library, which allows families or
individuals to borrow equipment at NO CHARGE from the Department. Anyone wishing to try something
new or if you need some additional equipment that we may have, please feel free to call the Nick Smith
Centre staff and enquire.
As always there will be an array of special events ranging from Minor Hockey Tournaments, to the Optimist
Winter Carnival, to the Lion’s Club 70th Anniversary this season. Also, watch for a list of events that are
being planned to help kick off Canada’s 150th Anniversary.
The pool will open up after our Annual Fall Maintenance Program with an abundance of programs ranging
from lessons to fitness programs. You can find all the Registration information here in the Arnprior Life or
on the Town’s website.
Once the colder weather sets in, staff will be working hard to have the outdoor skating rinks up and running.
For information on the status of the rinks, please visit the Town’s website.
As always, should you have a program suggestion, please do not hesitate to contact the Recreation
Department and we will see what we can do to make it happen.
Enjoy your fall and winter, and we sincerely hope that we can be a part of it.
Glenn Arthur
Director of Recreation Services

Mayor’s Message
On behalf of Arnprior Council and Staff, it is my great pleasure to
present you with the 2016 Fall & Winter Edition of Arnprior Life, which
outlines the many programs and events taking place over the upcoming
fall and winter. Please take a moment to peruse through this year’s
edition to see why Arnprior’s programs and events are second to none.
The Arnprior Recreation Department strives to provide exceptional
new programing for all ages, while continuing to maintain our most
popular long standing programs as well. Make sure to read more about
some of our recently added programs, such as youth yoga (pg. 27), the
Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program (pg.33) and our Seniors on a Roll
Programs (pg.22).
There are no shortages of things to do in Arnprior and this fall and
winter we will continue to provide residents and welcome visitors with a host of events, such as The Festival
of Small Halls which brings big music to little places. Arnprior has been chosen as one of only 24 locations
in this year’s festival. For more information see page 34. Also, 2017 will ring in Canada’s 150th Anniversary
celebrations and as such, Arnprior will commemorate this historic occasion by partnering with the local
community, coordinating 150 events throughout the year. The Town is currently accepting applications
for our planned Canada 150th events and subsequently will issue 2017 Passports, which will list all of our
planned local events. Passports will be available in December, so please make sure you visit www.arnprior.
ca/150events to learn all about it.
2016 and 2017 are years of incredible change, growth and rejuvenation. The Downtown Revitalization
Project is well underway and John Street is beginning its transition to the new pedestrian-friendly and
enhanced accessible streetscape. This two year project will help transform our Downtown into a destination
of choice for residents, visitors and investors alike. The Arnprior Shopping Centre renovation is also well
underway and we are all eager to see the Mall’s completion this fall. With the holiday season on the horizon,
there is no better way to see all the wonderful changes happening around Arnprior than getting a head
start on some holiday shopping at our wonderful local shops and businesses. All businesses continue to
remain open during the revitalization efforts and we are all collectively making every effort possible to
assist customers in continuing to shop during the construction. For more information on the Downtown
Revitalization Project, please visit www.arnprior.ca/dtr or call John Steckly at 613-623-4231.
Council and Staff of the Town of Arnprior truly hope that you will take part in the many spectacular events
and activities planned for Arnprior in 2017.
Warmest Regards,
David Reid,
Mayor, Town of Arnprior

We are offering our “Arnprior Gets Active” passes again this year! All
students in Grades 5 and 9 will receive a free “Community Access
Pass” for access to the Nick Smith Centre for free public and family
swimming, jr. shinny, public skating, dodgeball, after-school programs
and our “learn to…” programs! Passes will be handed out in all local schools
in September 2016 (John XXIII, St. Joseph’s, Walter Zadow, A.J. Charbonneau, McNab and
Arnprior District High School). St. Joe’s High School students are also eligible for a pass, but students
must contact the Nick Smith Centre to obtain one.
A Family Involvement Pass will be available to families of Grade 5 students only. It will allow these families
free facility usage for the parents/guardians and the siblings of the student, thereby enabling all families
with a child in Grade 5 to participate in the activities with them. This pass is used to promote family time
and physical activity together. When using the family pass, the Grade 5 student must be present. Any
family member may use the pass to participate in public or family swimming and public skating with the
child. We urge parents to come as a family to take full advantage of the pass program.
To obtain a Family Involvement Pass, a parent or guardian must contact the Nick Smith Centre.
This program is proudly sponsored by the Arnprior Optimists Club.

Launched in September 2004, KidSport Renfrew
County is a charitable program helping children in
our community play sports. Sports are one of the
few activities where children have the potential to
experience positive physical, mental, emotional and
social development all in the same environment.
KidSport focuses on sport so that all children have
the opportunity to play.
We are pleased to join forces with the Canadian Tire Jump Start Program in helping kids participate in
organized sports. Both charitable programs provide funds to help offset the costs of registration fees and
equipment. KidSport Renfrew County would love to hear from groups, organizations, coaches,
teachers or parents who know someone who is experiencing barriers to participating in sport and
recreation. Or if you are aware of children who are in need of some form of financial support, please pass
along the information. Together we can make a difference in the lives of children and youth in our
community.
Applications can be picked up at the Nick Smith Centre or by calling 613-623-7301. Renfrew County
children between the ages of 3 and 18 years old can apply for up to $250 per season. The Adjudication
Committee meets throughout the year to disburse funds for each season’s activities.
Grant Eligibility:
•
•
•
•
Preference is given to athletes being introduced to sport for the first time.
Grants are for youth 18 years and under.
Grants are available to residents of Renfrew County.
Eligible activities must be introductory-level sport that has a series of ongoing lessons, taught by a
qualified coach.
• Elite Camps, private lessons, travel to playoffs/tournaments, championships, and equipment upgrades
are not eligible.
• Endorsement letters by coaches, registrars and/or directors of clubs/leagues are not acceptable.
• Funding for sporting activities in which the child/youth is already enrolled.
Grant Characteristics:
• Grants range from $50 to $250, paid directly to the sports organization or retailer.
• Grants are designed to help overcome social and economic barriers that have prevented or limited
participation in organized sport.
• Grant eligibility is one (1) per child per season. We reserve the right to limit the total number of grants
per family.
• Applicants for a registration fee grant must submit a copy of the sport club registration form that identifies the specific registration fee for the athlete.
• Equipment purchase requests are limited in value, must be a reasonable cost, and grant requests must
be accompanied by a detailed summary of the items and all costs, prepared and endorsed by the retailer.
• Grants are not meant to replace existing recreation and/or social service funding for sport participation.
Grant Processing:
• Grants are processed by the adjudication committee throughout the year.
• Incomplete and/or ineligible applications will be returned.
• KidSport Renfrew County and its members will protect the confidentiality of all applicants and endorsements to the best of their abilities.
• Guidelines are subject to change by the KidSport Renfrew County Board of Directors.

Youth Pool Programs
Arnprior Bluefish Swim Club (ABSC)
We are a non-profit, volunteer run organization with the goal of fostering youth fitness, sportsmanship, and
friendship for our members. The organization delivers a number of youth programs for all ages and abilities
including:
• Non-Competitive
• Pre-Competitive
• Competitive
Members enjoy an encouraging environment, exhilarating team atmosphere, and tremendous fitness and
character-building opportunities.
Non-Competitive Program:
The non-competitive program is ideal for younger swimmers (age 7+) that are interested in trying competitive swimming. It is the ideal next step for those swimmers that have graduated from the Swim Plus program. Swimmers should be strong enough to swim one length of the pool without stopping. The focus of
this program is on the Fundamentals phase of the Long Term Swimmer Development (LTSD) model for all
four strokes, starts and turns. Swimmers in the non-competitive group can participate in 1 sanctioned swim
meet during the season.
This program runs from October to June.
Practices are twice a week for 50 minutes (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday) at either 3:304:20pm or 4:30-5:20pm.
Pre-Competitive Program:
The pre-competitive program is the ideal next step for swimmers from the Non-Competitive program or
for older swimmers (age 9+) that have good fundamentals in at least 3 strokes. This program continues to
build on swimmer Fundamentals and introduces swimmers to the Learn-to-Train phase of the LTSD model.
Team participation and good sportsmanship are developed. Swimmers in the pre-competitive group can
participate in 1 sanctioned swim meet during the season.
This program runs from October to June.
Practices are twice a week for 80 minutes (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday) from 4:00-5:20.
Competitive Program:
The competitive program introduces swimmers to the Train-to-Train and the Train-to-Compete phases of
the Swim Canada LTSD model. While becoming more efficient in the water, there is more endurance focus
and swimmers in this group are required to swim four or five practices (8+ hours) per week. Setting goals
and personal best times comes into focus. The competitive group participates in up to 8 sanctioned swim
meets during the season, this includes both local and out-of-town swim meets.
This program runs from early October to June.
Practices are (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) from 3:30 - 5:20pm, and Sundays 7:309:00am.

Adult Pool Programs
Greyfish Masters Swimming Program
The Greyfish Masters is a volunteer run swim club, focused on improving stroke efficiency, speed and
overall fitness in a friendly environment. Our members range in age from in their 20s all the way up to into
their 70s. The range of abilities is just as large, from just starting to swim laps up to athletes competing in
National (and even International) masters meets or Ironman triathlons.
NCCP certified Head Coach, Shawn Moffatt, delivers workouts geared towards improving stroke technique
and efficiency, including starts and turns of all 4 competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke
and butterfly). Improving these skills is essential for those wishing to swim competitively but can also be
beneficial for those training for triathlons or just wanting to improve their fitness. The workouts can easily
be customized to suit individual goals. Many club members choose to compete in swim meets or triathlons
throughout the year to display their skills. However, competing is completely optional and should not
discourage new members from joining. For those wishing to compete in Sanctioned Masters Swim meets,
there is a requirement to join Master Swimming Canada ($35/year)
The club is open to anyone over the age of 18 who is interested in swimming laps and improving their
strokes, turns and starts. Please note that this is not a learn to swim program and it is advised that
swimmers can comfortably swim at least 2 laps of the pool without stopping.
There is also plenty of scope for the more social swimmer, with social events throughout the year and
breakfast after the Saturday morning swims. The yearly membership fee is for 11 months (pool closed for
maintenance in September).

Arnprior Public Library
It’s time to explore your library.
The Arnprior Public Library offers something for everyone
so make it your goal to discover something new this
fall. We offer much more than books, magazines, DVDs,
museum passes, ebooks and interlibrary loans.
Did you know your library card gives you access to a variety
of databases including complete Consumer Reports
information? Just click on our ‘Online Resources” page
from the website. Your query for any consumer item goes
into the search bar of the Consumer Reports logo and then you can sort by latest publication.
If you’re a car enthusiast, why not check out our Auto Repair Database. You have full access to any make
and model for repair manuals, recall information and more available to you 24/7. All you need to enter is
your current library card number.
Another great source of information is Ancestry.ca. You can explore your family history for free when you
come to the library. Bring your laptop and you’ll be able to save your findings to create that special family
tree.
The library also offers a monthly Film Club. There’s no membership fee to watch
some great films in the ambiance of the library on the third Sunday afternoon
of each month. Donations are welcome to help defray our licensing fees. In
September we’ll be hosting a mini foreign film festival. Check our website for the
full lineup.
Our moveable shelves allow us to transform the library providing a great place for musical performances.
We’ll be hosting our annual “Blues in the Books” on October 23rd during Library Week and you’ll not
want to miss our New Year’s Eve Gala. This Black and White fundraising event will offer live dance music
with the Heartbeats, food by Riley’s Catering, cash bar, quieter conversation areas by the fireplace, live
streaming of the World Juniors Hockey Game and more! Limited tickets are $60 each and available now at
the circulation desk. This will be a talk of the town event!
Our full lineup of children’s programs (Baby Rhyme
Time, Toddler Tales, Friday Preschool drop-ins, After
School Kids and Teen Group) is expanding with a great
Saturday morning lineup! Bonjour mes Amis is a drop-in
bilingual family story time offered 2nd & 4th Saturdays at
10:30am. We’re filling in the alternating Saturdays with a
drop-in Family LEGO Lounge. Stop by and get creative!
Provide us with your e-mail address and we will send
you our monthly newsletter. Just drop us an e-mail with
“subscribe” in the subject line to [email protected]

Help keep Arnprior Clean and Beautiful
The Town of Arnprior has both a Property Standards and Clean Yards By-law which sets out the minimum
standards for building and property maintenance within the Town. The standards prescribed in these Bylaws are intended to outline the reasonable maintenance and upkeep of yards, buildings and properties.
Some common violations we see include:
• peeling paint and broken windows
• objects or conditions such as holes and excavations that might create a fire, health or accidental hazard
• heavy undergrowth, long grass and noxious weeds,
• dead, decayed or damaged trees or vegetation that create an unsafe or unsightly condition or that may
cause damage
• dilapidated, collapsed or unfinished structures
• vehicles, equipment, machinery or trailers that are wrecked, discarded, dismantled, inoperative,
unlicensed or abandoned
• dilapidated furniture or any appliances (e.g. freezers, refrigerators, stoves, etc.)
• stored or accumulated objects or materials that create a nuisance and are unsightly
Owners will be notified of any By-law infraction and given a time limit to remedy the situation. In most
cases, 14 days shall be provided from the service date of the notice. Exceptions would be in cases where an
immediate risk exists to public health and safety, at which point immediate action would be required.
An Officer of the Town of Arnprior under the Property Standards By-law or Clean Yards By-Law has the
power of entry onto your property for the purpose of inspection or remedial action on or in any structure
on your property other than your house.
If the home owner does not comply with the requested actions, the Town of Arnprior can do the required
work at the expense of the owner. Expenses can be paid directly, or added to your tax bill.

2016 Fall Hydrant Flush Valve Maintenance Program
The Public Works Department in conjunction with the Town’s Spring Hydrant Flush
program is conducting a Valve Maintenance Program. The hydrant flush will clean
the distribution system by flushing any standing red water. The valve maintenance
program is designed to clean and exercise the valves and by doing so will extend their
life as well as determine whether the valves are operable. The work is planned for the
weeks of September 12th to November 18th and will be completed in the shortest
period of time possible. This procedure is routine but it may result in some temporary
inconveniences such as poor water pressure or “red” water. Do not be alarmed.
What you should know:
• If coloured water is detected, please open your COLD water taps to clear the
system.
• The coloured water is not hazardous to health.
• This situation is temporary and should not last any longer than two hours at most.
For more information please contact David Armstrong, Public Works Supervisor at 613-623-4231 ext. 1833
Lock It or Lose It!
A professional can steal your vehicle in just 30 seconds – without the key.
The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) and Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) are encouraging
citizens to “Lock It or Lose It.” The goal of the proactive crime prevention program is to encourage drivers to
take a few simple precautions that will protect their vehicles from theft.
An unlocked door or an open window is an invitation to thieves. The goal of the “Lock It or Lose It” program
vehicle security audit reminds drivers to always:
• Roll up their vehicles’ windows;
• Keep valuables out of sight;
• Lock their doors; and
• Pocket their keys.
In partnership with IBC, vehicles parked in a variety of locations are checked to confirm that they are
locked and that no valuables have been left in plain view. A small notice is placed on every vehicle checked
indicating what safety precautions were neglected and offering some simple prevention tips for drivers
to protect their vehicles against theft. The notice also congratulates drivers who have ensured that their
vehicle is secure, with valuables out of plain sight.
Auto theft costs Canadians more than $1 billion every year. About half of all stolen vehicles are used to
commit another crime or are driven – often recklessly – for simple purposes of transportation (this is
called ‘destination theft’). In these cases, the thieves are usually amateurs who take advantage of owner
negligence by grabbing the first vehicle they can find that’s been left unsecured. In the other half of cases,
vehicles are stolen by professional thieves involved in organized crime rings.
The key to protecting your vehicle is in your hands. Keep yourself from becoming an easy target by properly
securing your vehicle. Remember: Lock It or Lose It!
More details about crime-proofing may be found on-line at: www.ibc.ca/en/Insurance_Crime/Auto_Theft/

Cemeteries
Albert Street Cemetery and Malloch Road Cemetery (Usborne Street)
The Town of Arnprior strives to provide a cherished public space, created
out of devotion, pride and remembrance at its two municipal cemeteries.
We request that family members, visitors and historians please abide by
the following rules:
• Flower beds are only permitted on plots with a monument with the
beds being no wider than eight (8) inches out from the front of the
monument. The exception being the cremation section, where no
flowerbeds are allowed.
• Cut flowers may be removed at the discretion of the caretaker.
• Dogs must be kept on a leash and the dog owner is responsible for cleaning up after their animals.
• The Town is not responsible for loss of or damage to any articles left upon any lot or grave.
• Please help in maintaining an unobstructed, clean, litter-free public space.
For details regarding the purchase of plots, burial or general information, please feel free to contact the Town
of Arnprior or visit the ‘Town’ section of www.arnprior.ca.
Columbaria Information
The growing popularity of cremation as a method of disposition has generated a demand for an attractive
alternative of memorialization. One such alternative is a columbarium. A columbarium is a freestanding,
above-ground structure with recesses in the walls (to house urns) for the
perpetual care of cremated remains. These recesses in the walls are referred
to as “niches” and are large enough in size to accommodate two standard
cremation urns. Each niche is adorned with an individually inscribed granite
panel to memorialize your loved one(s).
The Town of Arnprior has installed two Forty-eight Niche Columbaria in
the Albert Street Cemetery, and is offering residents and non-residents the
opportunity for burial after cremation. Those interested in receiving more
information or if you would like to purchase a niche, please contact the Town of
Arnprior at 613-623-4231 ext. 1818 or 1819.

Winter Fire Hydrant Maintenance
In an emergency, fire hydrants need to be visible and accessible. Despite the best efforts of Town staff,
snowfall may still leave some fire hydrants obstructed. The Arnprior Fire Department would like to remind
you that a clearly visible, accessible fire hydrant could save your home - or even your life. If a fire hydrant is
obstructed or buried in snow, firefighters can lose valuable time gaining use of a hydrant.
You can help!
If you feel up to it, you could perform a valuable public service and protect yourself, your family and your
neighbours by helping maintain fire hydrants clear of snow
Helpful Tips
• Never place snow around a fire hydrant;
• If helping to clear snow, about 3 feet around the hydrant is needed so firefighters have enough room to
connect the fire hose.

Fire Prevention Week - October 9 - 15, 2016
• Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
• Make sure you know how old all the smoke alarms are in your home.
• To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the
alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date.
For further Fire Prevention information and events, check the fire
department webpage at www.arnprior.ca/arnprior-fire-department
Carbon Monoxide Alarms - Did you Know?
• Carbon Monoxide is referred to as “CO”.
• CO can only be detected by a working CO alarm. CO is tasteless, odorless and you can’t see it. CO is
often referred to as the “silent killer”.
• CO alarms are now law in Ontario! If you have an attached garage, a fireplace or a fuel burning appliance, you require a CO alarm.
• If a CO alarm is required, it shall be located outside the sleeping area.
• You can contact your local fire department at their administration number if you have any non-emergency inquiries regarding CO legislation and requirements.
• CO alarms have a recommended replacement date. Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your brand of alarm (generally between 5-7 years).
• Many brands of CO alarms which are hard wired or plug into an electrical receptacle may also have a
battery back-up. Ensure to change the battery regularly.
• Many CO alarms provide short intermittent beeps for maintenance purposes (example: low battery).
A steady and continuous sounding alarm is an indicator of CO being detected. Ensure you read your
manufacturer’s instructions and understand your CO alarm.
• Landlords are required to supply, test and maintain records for CO alarms.

Tips
Get Ahead of the Winter Freeze
It’s not too early to begin preparing for the heating season.
Check these 10 tips off your list and get ahead of the winter freeze.
r Our furnace has been inspected and serviced by a qualified professional during the last
12 months. (A furnace should be serviced at least once a year.)
r Our chimneys and vents have been cleaned and inspected by a qualified professional.
I have checked for creosote built-up. (Not cleaning your chimney is the leading cause of
chimney fires from built up creosote. This service needs to be done at least once a year.)
r
Our wood for our fireplace or wood stove is dry, seasoned wood.
r
Our fireplace screen is metal or heat-tempered glass, in good condition and secure in
its position in front of the fireplace.
r
We have a covered metal container ready to use to dispose cooled ashes. (The ash
container should be kept at least 10 feet from the home and any nearby buildings.)
r
Our children know to stay at least 3 feet away from the fireplace, wood/pellet stove,
oil stove or other space heaters.
r
Our portable space heaters have an automatic shut-off.
r
Our portable space heaters will be plugged directly into an outlet (not an extension
cord) and placed at least three feet from anything that can burn; like bedding, paper,
walls, and even people. (Place notes throughout your home to remind you to turn off
portable heaters when you leave a room or go to bed.)
r
We have tested our smoke alarms and made
sure they are working. (You need smoke alarms
on every level of the home, inside each sleeping
room and outside each separate sleeping area.
For the best protection, the smoke alarms should
be interconnected so when one sounds, they
all sound.)
r
We have tested our carbon monoxide alarms
and made sure they are working. (Carbon
monoxide alarms should be located outside each
sleeping area and on every level of the home.)

Greater Arnprior Seniors Council
The Council of the Town of Arnprior participated in the development of an Age Friendly Community (AFC)
Plan in March of 2016. All the feedback and participation during the public consultation period was greatly
appreciated and the result is a robust and sustainable set of strategies. Now it’s time to put the Plan into
Action. Successful implementation of the Plan’s strategies requires participation from various community
entities. In order to accomplish this, the “Greater Arnprior Seniors Council (GASC)” has been created to take
over this important initiative. The Council is made up of five (5) senior citizen members, as well as representatives from community stakeholders, such as the Town of Arnprior, Township of McNab/Braeside, Arnprior
Regional Health, Arnprior-Braeside-McNab Seniors at Home Program. The GASC is tasked with the ongoing implementation and monitoring of the goals and objectives of the Age Friendly Community Plan.
More information on the Age Friendly Community Plan process, including a digital as well as copy of the

Communities in Bloom
Communities in Bloom is much more than flowers. It’s about pride and building on our strengths to help
our Town grow to it’s full potential. This project, driven by a core of volunteers, is part of an international
program to further the education and awareness of environmental concerns, preserve heritage sites and
encourage community involvement.
The committee’s ongoing beautification projects include:
• Floral plantings at all municipal park signs / entrances
• Lamp post decorations and banners
• Participation in the annual spring “Pitch-in week”
• Landscaping near the town marina
• School seed program
• Beautification of the Town traffic triangles
• Tree planting project on Madawaska Boulevard
• Park amenities
Many of these projects are made possible by partnerships with other groups and organizations such as the
local business community and area students.
Volunteers Wanted: We are always looking for eager volunteers! Please call 613-623-7301.
