The Board of Governors monthly meeting was held
on Tuesday May 31st. The Finance committee reported that April was a good month; growth in revenue is attributed to an increase in third party
events. Expenses for the month were higher than
the same period last year but below budget. Golf
rounds for the month were 1,861 vs 1,837 last year.
Drew Goehler and the Green department welcomed
a new assistant Mike Davis to the green staff. Mike
has previously worked at Lookaway GC. and Manufactures GC. Mike is well versed in the operation
of the department and brings with him an extensive
knowledge with respect to trees, he is a welcome
addition to our club. You may have noticed red
marks on several trees throughout the course. These
trees have been identified as unhealthy or poor
quality trees which potentially will cause problems
for the course. The Greens department is evaluating trees throughout the property and will address
them in the near future.
Many of the capital projects approved for the year
have been completed and paid for. These projects
included; renovations to the ladies locker room, a
retaining wall at the 1st Tee, landscape lighting at
the 1st Tee, Manor House Landscape lighting and
Stone work and lighting at the entrance to the Proshop. Renovations to the practice area will begin in
September; the Greens Committee will provide
more details in the coming months.
The July 4th celebration at the club is quickly approaching. The weekend includes the Red White &
Blue and the Jack & Jill tournaments followed by
Picnic and Fireworks. This weekend is always popular, please be sure to make reservations as early as
possible.
Membership continues to be strong. The House
category is full yet openings exist in both Family
and Dining categories. If you are aware of anyone
interested in joining OYRCC, please contact Alex
Cifelli for more information.
Membership Appreciation Day will be on Sunday
July 17th. Complimentary lunch including hot
dogs, hamburgers, soda and beer will be served in
the Halfway House from 11am to 3pm

age of 6. The Snack Shop will be open daily from 11:00
AM to 4:00 PM, with extended hours on Fridays and
Sundays when the Snack Shop will be open until 7:00
PM. After 4:00 PM on the aforementioned days, beverages and snacks will be available, just ask the Lifeguards.
Beverages, snacks and food service must be purchased
from the Club. Food and drink is not to be brought from
outside the Club. Be sure to check the monthly calendar
for early closures of the pool due to member events.
The Pool is included with all classes of membership except for Dining. If you wish to join the pool you can call
Sandi or Janet in the office and they will sign you up.
The Family membership is $535 for the season or $475
for a single membership.
We will be having our annual Picnic and Fireworks on
Monday, July 4th. Since seating on the patio is limited you will need to get your reservations in early. We
will have a DJ and “Tiki” Bar at the pool with extended
hours from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. The Manor House will be
closed for Lunch. See Sandi’s Flyer in newsletter.
It would be appreciated when entering the Terrace from
the outside for Lunch or Dinner to please come inside
and check with the person at the Hostess Desk so they
know you have arrived and will need menu’s. When
making your reservation you need to decide where you
would like to sit, we cannot accept reservations for inside
and outside seating for the same reservation. During this
busy time of the year, reservations are appreciated.
Check the monthly social calendar for time constraints
for dinner reservations on the Terrace when a large event
is being held.
It’s never too early to book Birthday Parties, Graduations, First Communions, Christenings, Holiday parties
and any other event you wish to hold. We want to make
sure we can accommodate the membership by giving you
first choice, Please plan accordingly and call Donna
Andreoli, Director of Catering for help in planning your
event.
Have a great Summer!

Steve Probst
Hopefully by now most of our members have had a chance to read the recent article in GAP magazine about
Steve Probst who in 2017 will celebrate 30 years as assistant golf professional here at Old York Road. In case
you missed the article you can find it at the Golf Association of Philadelphia website www.gapgolf.org click
on GAP Chat: Steve Probst.
Virtually the entire article deals with Steve’s prowess in tournament golf which to put it mildly is very impressive. Without question Steve in his prime was one of the most accomplished golfers in Philadelphia History.
In this column we hope to fill in the blanks as it were and cover the whys and wherefores of Steve’s life off the
golf course. We’ll discuss how he got into golf, factors that contributed to his success, some frustrations and
disappointments, and finally whether it was all worth it.
For Steve it all started when his next door neighbor gave him a cut down set of used golf clubs. He was 8 years
old at the time and enjoyed as Steve puts it” any kind of sport that involved a ball.” Up until then his favorite
was baseball, but as he got more and more into golf that was about to change.
The fact that Steve’s parents, Lou and Kathryn, were members of Manufacturers Country Club provided Steve
with the opportunity to take lessons from the club’s legendary golf pro, the late Bud Lewis. According to
many, Bud was one of the finest teaching professionals, not only in the Philadelphia area, but according to an
article at the time in Golf Digest one of the best on the East coast.
Under Bud’s guidance reinforced by many hours on the practice range Steve’s game steadily improved to a
point that he was becoming a consistent factor in some of the more prestigious local, and even some national
tournaments. There are far too many of these tournaments to cover in this short article, but one in particular
came up during my interview with Steve.
In 1961 at age 16 Steve qualified for the United States Junior Amateur Championship played that year at the
Cornell University Golf Course in the beautiful town of Ithaca New York. He roomed with GAP hall of famer,
Jay Sigel. When they compared their results after the second round Steve reported that he shot two over par,
but unfortunately lost. Sigel, on the other hand said he shot close to 80 and won. As Steve phrases it today
“such is match play”
During the long hours Steve and Bud worked together on Steve’s game I’m sure neither of them realized that
many years later when Steve, himself, would become a golf professional he would incorporate many of Bud’s
unique teaching concepts when instructing his students. This does is not by any means that Steve did not have
ideas of his own or that he was Bud’s clone. Far from it. It’s just that they spent so much time together that
part of Bud’s modus operandi was bound to rub off and it did. It also explains why they would become such
good lifetime friends on and off the course.
On a personal note except for some lessons from Dave McKenzie virtually all of my golf instruction came
from either Bud Lewis or Steve. This worked out very well for me because of their similar teaching styles.
They had an interesting common denominator which can only be described an almost irresistible compulsion
to teach. While in the middle of a lesson on one tee without notice they might temporarily abandon that pupil
and begin an impromptu lesson to a struggling golfer on another. Observing a golfer flailing away with a
swing they felt was correctable was apparently just too repugnant for them to ignore.
Returning to Steve’s teen age years, as his game continued to improve he found that his baseball swing was
negatively effecting his golf game so he gradually discontinued the sport. This left him with his two remaining
favorites, basketball and golf, both of which he selected to fulfill the requirement of all 8th grade students at
William Penn Charter School that they actively participate in at least two sports.
Steve, however, was cautioned against taking golf. Apparently there was very little room in an already formidable lineup composed almost entirely of seasoned upper classmen. Undeterred, however, Steve stayed with
his decision, and as it turned out not only did he make the team, by the end of the season he was the number
two player.
Penn Charter, as part of the elite Inter-Academic league, was privileged to play the cream of the crop of private
clubs in the Philadelphia area. Their home course was Huntingdon Valley, a tough track for any golfer let
alone a bunch of high school kids. Playing courses of this caliber, however, sharpened Steve’s game because
of the need to play a wide variety of difficult shots often under tournament pressure. Steve tells us that after all
these years Huntingdon Valley is still one of his favorite courses.
