Dear Fellow League Members,
Flag Day is one of our many American
holidays that has its origin in Philadelphia. It
commemorates the adoption of the flag of the
United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of
the Second Continental Congress. This year,
The Union League celebrated Flag Day, and
also the Army Birthday, by welcoming U.S.
Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas to a tribute
luncheon and to receive our Lincoln Award. A
special thanks to Rear Admiral (ret.) Joseph
Hare and the Armed Services Council for arranging a patriotic recognition of the flag that
represents our nation, its values, and all our
citizens.
The Foundations have also dedicated a new
plaque for the Hall of Honor, where we will
recognize all members who have served, or are
serving, in the armed forces. This plaque will
reside next to our other plaques that honor the
past military service of our members near the
Broad Street entrance.
While we have taken time this month to
celebrate our nation, the flag that represents it,
and our members and soldiers who have protected it, we also pause to celebrate the almost
50 children and grandchildren of members
who have graduated from college this month!
Taking full advantage of the great opportunities presented in our free society, for which
education is the foundation, is also an expression of love of country and appreciation for all
who have made these opportunities possible.
Next month, we will welcome Archbishop
Charles Chaput from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia who will discuss the upcoming visit of
Pope Francis as part of the World Meeting of
Families. This historic visit of the Pope comes
amidst concerns of an increasingly narcissistic
culture and degradation of the fundamental
societal social unit: the nuclear family.
If you have not yet gone, part of our summer
tradition is our weekly Lobster Night on Thursdays. These sumptuous feasts are a favorite
and will continue until a final grand feast on
August 27 in Lincoln Hall!
Golf is off to a busy start at Torresdale, as
has usage of the pool. Construction continues
to make progress on the historic clubhouse
for our projected late summer opening. The
reviews have been outstanding! Thanks to the
team under the leadership of Sandee Cataldi,
Club Manager, Sean Palmer, Director of Golf,
Ann Markowitz, Director of Membership and
Private Events and Ed Vadden, Executive Chef.

Friendly House Rules Reminder
Cell Phone Policy in the Dining Rooms
The League’s House Rules allows for the brief and discreet reading of
your cellphones while in the dining rooms. Please be mindful of this and
keep it to a minimum as it may be a distraction to other members dining.
See below for the formal policy in the League’s House Rules.
The Veterans Initiative
The Veterans Initiative is losing no ground over the summer months,
with planning and events fully underway. VetSmart’s September 14
day-long professional conference, is already receiving registrations from
veterans and family members. Chairman Chris D’Ascenzo is pleased to
report that Drexel University is the Gold Sponsor for the event. VetSmart’s
boots on the ground members include Susan Aldridge, Col. Philip DeHennis, who is also representing the Armed Services Council, Steve Hashem,
Tony Contino, Jon Connolly, Joe DiMaio and Andre McCoy, who is also
representing Partner American Legion #405.
Mark your calendars and share with veterans and family members –
the Veterans Job Fair is slated for October 19. We expect another sold
out event, so please contact Co-Chair Erin Arvedlund for sponsorships
and exhibitor space.
In veteran non-profit news, members Chris Meek and Marc Morgenthaler of SoldierSocks, welcomed Navy Seal Rorke Denver and Jon Runyan as
speakers to a sold-out event June 9. Members and guests were honored to
see a demonstration of an exoskeleton that enables paralyzed veterans to
walk again. SoldierSocks is dedicated to helping veterans take their next
steps in life. Love of Country Leads.

“I love having lunch and business meetings together at 1862. The service
is gracious and efficient and it does not matter if I have 45 minutes or
90 minutes, I always have a delicious lunch with privacy, beautiful
surroundings and plenty of time to conduct business at hand!”
– Linda Knox, 20 year member
“Lunch at 1862 is one of my favorite experiences as a League member.
Whether I am hosting a colleague, meeting a friend or celebrating an
anniversary, it’s always a special occasion. My husband and I were
recently surprised by the kitchen with a yolk and truffled ravioli that has
to be my favorite 1862 bite of all time!”
– Amber M. Mallon, 5 year member
“Lunch in 1862 is a guaranteed gastronomic experience. The food is
exceptional, the ambiance perfect for any occasion and the service and
attention to detail make it memorable. For me, when I want to have that
special lunch it is always 1862 by Martin Hamann”
– Danny Liberatoscioli, 9 year member
“The ambience is warm and inviting, the food is exceptional. 1862 is a
special place for a special lunch.”
– Susanne S. Shuster, 3 year member
“In a city with varied and impressive dining options, 1862 continues to excel
because there is a guarantee of the combination of first-class dining,
service, ambiance and decorum.”
– President Gregory P. Montanaro, 14 year member

City Abandoned: Charting the Loss
of Civic Institutions in Philadelphia
With the photographs in this book, Vincent Feldman offers Philadelphians a testament of who we
were, who we are, and who we are likely to become.
Some of his subjects have succumbed to neglect or
demolition (the Ridge Avenue Farmers’ Market);
some have been successfully rehabilitated to new
uses (the Victory Building); while others remain in
limbo in their ruined states – their futures far from
secure. “Feldman is not the kind of photographer who shoots and runs.
An old-school craftsman, he uses a large-format view camera much like
the one Mathew Brady hauled around to record the devastation of the
Civil War. Feldman then retreats to the darkroom to print his images on
paper, rendering them with such precision that bricks and stones appear
to leap from the page in three-dimensional relief,” said Inga Saffron, Philadelphia Inquirer. Feldman is a lifelong resident of Philadelphia. His work is
held in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and in museums and private
collections internationally. He is a Master Lecturer in photography at the
University of the Arts. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

The Real Watergate Scandal; Collusion,
Conspiracy, and the Plot to Bring Nixon Down
An aging judge about to step down. Aggressive
prosecutors friendly with the judge. A disgraced
president. A nation that had already made up its
mind. The Watergate trials were a legal mess, and
now, with the discovery of new documents that
reveal shocking misconduct by prosecutors and
judges alike, former Nixon staffer and Union League
member Geoff Shepard has a convincing case that
the wrongdoing of these history-making trials was actually a bigger
scandal than the Watergate scandal itself. Shepard is a lawyer best known
for his work on the Nixon White House staff and his subsequent efforts
to document policy initiatives of the Nixon administration. Copies of the
book will be available for purchase.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7 AT 6:30PM
There may be no place like home,
but there is definitely no place like the
FALL BALL!
Join us for a journey though time as you travel to Kansas and
beyond. Follow the amazing yellow brick road to the elaborate city
of green – OZ. Each area and dining room will tell the story of the
most well known story of all time. As you walk the yellow brick road,
you may need to watch out for a falling house, flying monkeys or
perhaps a witch or two, but we guarantee the journey will be one to
be remembered!
Back by popular demand, the Grand Reception will be in Lincoln
Hall followed by dinner seating in auxiliary dining rooms. Dancing
after dinner will be located in Lincoln Hall and outside Grant,
Meade and Founders.
Seating requests should be submitted by August 14.
