9/11 Mass Helps Us Remember
“We must never forget what happened on that fateful day,” — Julie and Tom Hartsell Family
The 9/11 Mass of Remembrance sponsored by the Knights
of Columbus marking the 10th anniversary of the attack on
America last Sunday was an overwhelming success with an
estimated 1,200 or more in attendance.
The procession down the aisle began with the Harp and Thistle
Bagpipe Band, the Knights of Columbus Color Corps, the
United States Marine Corps Color Guard, carrying the colors.
Following the Marines were New York City Firemen and Police
Officers, Police Officers from the Port Authority of NY &
NJ, as well as members of the Gulf Coast Retired Firefighters
Association, the North Naples Fire Department and Collier
County Sheriff’s Deputies, who joined their brethren from New
York to honor the fallen.
Tom Oram, Ellie Vandermeuse and the St. John Choir
provided the music and were given a standing ovation by the
congregation. Fr. Len, who celebrated the 9:00 a.m. Mass,
followed Jesus’s words in his homily, asking forgiveness. “We
must forgive, in order to be forgiven,” he said.
A piece of steel recovered from the rubble of the World Trade
Center was on display outside the church and gave special
meaning to what had happened on that day, along with a fire
truck from the North Naples Fire Department.
Julie and Tom Hartsell, as well as their son and daughter in-law,
said, “It was an incredible experience for all of us present,” and
added, “We must never forget what happened on that fateful
day and today’s Mass brought it all back to us.”
Peter Tunucci said, “The Mass was wonderful.” “It gave a
special meaning to all of us, but especially to those New York
City firemen and police officers who sacrificed their lives in the
service of their fellow man.”
Nancy Palmer, visiting from Michigan, said, “The Mass let us
relive the 9/11 attacks on our country and was a tribute that
lifted our minds, consoled our hearts and ensured that the St.
John community would never let that day pass into the history
books.”
One woman who chose not to be identified said, “When the
Marines fired their rifles and taps were played, I cried my eyes
out.”

Pray With Sidewalk Witnesses for Life in Front of Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood will be completing its second year of
surgical abortions in Naples on Monday, September 12.
Over 800 babies have been destroyed by surgical abortion
and who knows how many more by use of the abortion pill
(RU-486).
Parking and shuttle service will be available from the
parking lots located at the west end of Creech Road
just prior US41. There will be signage pointing to these
parking areas. There are no sign ups or special programs
slated, just your presence needed. However, if you want
to wear a white shirt and bring
black balloons, that would help
demonstrate our grief over the evil
that prevails there.
Please join the Sidewalk
Witnesses for Life on Monday,
September 12, in front of Planned
Parenthood on the corners of
Goodlette and Creech Roads.
The Sidewalk Witnesses pray in
front of Planned Parenthood every
Monday from 8:30 a.m. until
about 3:00 p.m. We invite as many
as possible to join us on Monday,
September 12, between 10:00
a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to be a visible
witness for the sacredness of LIFE
and to end the killing of life at
Planned Parenthood.
We continue to present ourselves in
a quiet, prayerful manner, praying
for the exploited women, the babies
being aborted and all those involved
in the abortion industry.

JOP November 9 -14 Mission
to Provide Optical Services
Newly Baptized
The next JOP mission is an optical mission to provide eye exams
and eyeglasses at St. Pius X, Kingston, Jamaica, sister parish of
St. John the Evangelist, from November 9 - 14.
Interested missionaries do not need to be qualified in the field
of optics. A desire to help the needy is the only requirement.
Generally, the mission needs eight to twenty-two volunteers for
the trip.
Some of the things the missionaries will be doing include fitting
eye wear, assisting in eye exams, record keeping, assisting with
school physical exams, school fix up and much more.
Lily and Andrew Tran were baptized May 8.
“You will find this to be the experience of a lifetime as you
become a real missionary,” said Dr. Richard Van Buskirk, of Van
Buskirk Opticians.
Dr. Van Buskirk has been participating in the optical missions for
fourteen years with generally three missions each year.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact, Dr. Van Buskirk for
details at [email protected] or 225.1212.

If you were unable to attend the 9/11
remembrance Mass this past Sunday at
9:00 a.m., there is an outstanding recap
with numerous pictures on the Naples
Daily News website. Here is the link.
http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2011/
sep/11/naples-pays-tribute-911-fallen-worship-services/
The Mass was completely full with over 1,200 in attendance to
recognize the ten-year anniversary of this very sad moment in
history.
Ask and you shall receive! My request last week for a gently
used refrigerator resulted in the donation of a very nice six-year
old unit. Conveniently, the donor was upgrading to a stainless
steel model and was more than happy to donate the old one.
Thanks James and Loretta Slattery for your very generous
donation.
Work began this past week to install a new audio visual
system in the ballroom of the Parish Life Center. This new
system will feature
four ceiling-mounted
LCD projectors and
four 12 foot screens
located throughout the
ballroom with a touch
screen operations
panel. Regardless of
your seat, a good view
will be had by all.
With this new system,
we will be able to host
seminars with Power
Point presentations,
live streaming and
just about anything
else you can imagine.
The installation is
being performed by
Pro Audio Services, and I can assure you that their work is
impeccable. As I mentioned several weeks ago, this new AV
system is being installed at no cost to the parish. It is being
donated by a local anonymous organization. The cost for the
new system is $55,000.00.
What would Scott’s Corner be without a plug for the Catholic
Faith Appeal. As you can see from our CFA analysis, we are
well below our goal for the 2011 appeal and sadly, time is
running out, and I am now more than a bit nervous. We need
another $154,000.00 in pledges and/or contributions by the end
of the year in order to reach our goal. Obviously, the ultimate

objective is to exceed our goal, however, at this point in time I
would be ecstatic simply to meet our goal. Remember that you
have numerous options in order to help us reach our goal. You
may drop a check in the collection made payable to the Catholic
Faith Appeal, fill out a pledge card and send directly to the
Diocese of Venice, or you may go to the Diocesan website and
make a credit card contribution. If we fail to reach our goal,
the end result will be extremely detrimental to the 2011/2012
operating budget. If you are able, please help us reach our goal
for the 2011 Catholic Faith Appeal.
We have opened a new section in the memorial garden for
Knights of Columbus. The current section is virtually at
capacity and only a few random single spots remain. The new
section is located adjacent to one of the new granite benches
which was donated by our very own Knights of Columbus
Council 11281. If you are a Brother Knight (or spouse)
and would like to take advantage of your “pick of the litter”
with regards to this new section, please contact me to make
arrangements. The all inclusive price is $1,200.00 and includes
the opening, closing urn, headstone and plaque. If you are not a
Knight and would like
to purchase a similar
space in another
area of the memorial
garden, please
contact me to make
arrangements.
Have you noticed
anything missing
outside of the church
for the past several
months? It is not a
tangible item that has
been missing but rather
the beautiful sound
of the carillon. The
bell tower received a
direct lightning strike
several months ago. A representative from Schulmerich Bells
came out and replaced the destroyed circuit board, however, the
wiring from the carillon to the bell tower was also damaged and
had to be replaced. The conduit which houses the wire was also
destroyed making it impossible to “fish” a new feed between
the two locations. After much research, Jim Follese (parishioner
and licensed electrician) has found a solution and assures me
that we will once again hear the beautiful sounds of the carillon
as early as this weekend. Thanks, Jim, for your diligence in
ensuring that the carillon is operational.

Life
Seeking A Generous God
veryone wants to be treated fairly and with
justice. In our dealings with those in our
family, with our friends, and with people in
church or society, we expect that they will
grant us the dignity of being fair. Today’s
gospel contradicts the world’s sense of
fairness. It seems extremely unfair that those
who worked long hours should receive the
same pay as the ones who came at the last
hour. How many of us would put up with
this scenario? What we have to remember
is that through this parable, Jesus is teaching
Reflection Questions
1. What is challenging about today’s parable?
2. What does today’s parable tell us about
God’s initiative?
3. How does God’s mercy and justice differ
from that of the world?
4. Name the times in which you have responded
to the Lord and have neglected the Lord?
5. In what way do you think God will repay you
for your discipleship and Christian witness?

us to go deeper into the reality of God. The
parable demonstrates how God summons
people into His kingdom at various times
and in various places. God calls people in
every season. He is always at work, ready to
seek out what is lost and to offer salvation.
God offers the gift of eternal life and it is
never too late to accept His invitation. Such
is God’s generosity, that He is ready to love
and forgive even in the eleventh hour.
The message for us is that God’s ways are
clearly not our ways, neither are his thoughts
our thoughts. We are always invited to turn
to God who is gracious and forgiving. It
takes longer for some people to recognize
the Giver in the midst of the gifts of life.
Most of us can easily give witness to the
ways in which God has manifested Himself
to us and how we have responded to Him.
Even though some of us may have been
totally dismissive of God’s will in our lives,
certain events take place or certain people
enter our lives to remind us that God’s
redemption is forever at work and that He is
calling us to right relationship with Him. It
may well take us or others until the eleventh
hour to respond to the grace and love of
www. saintjohntheevangelist . com
God’s invitation, but God offers us the gift of
forgiveness and transformation nonetheless.
Let us consider for a moment how the countries
of our world have tried to settle international
disputes. International affairs can be far removed
from God’s plan for unity and peace. Deadlines
are necessary at times to affect change in hostile
environments. But is it necessary to go to war
when countries run out of time? We must discern
how to create environments in which lasting
peace can be secured, patiently building up trust
and offering adequate time for negotiations.
The example set by God is one of patience, not
hurriedness. The parable demonstrates this very
point. International politics are indeed complex,
but we should heed the lessons of history.
Although not the true way, war sometimes is very
necessary. No matter what our stand, we must
always pray for those young men and women
who give themselves in service to their country,
praying that God will keep them safe.
The United Nations Building/Steve Cadman
Those of us who are thirty or older will remember
that we were asked to pray for the conversion of
Russia from communism to religious freedom.
Today, if we adhere to the wisdom of the gospel,
we know we must pray for the conversion of those
who engage in violence and mass destruction.
Prayer changes hearts, not violence. It is never
too late for those who are violent to have a change
of heart and to begin to love
instead of hate. God waits
for such individuals to enter
the harvest of His love and
kingdom. It is never too
late for them. It takes our
prayer and openness to God’s
generosity to allow this
transformation to take place.
God’s ways are certainly
not our ways for anything
is possible for Him. In the
words from Isaiah we can
only pray that the scoundrel
forsake his way and the
wicked his thoughts.

Prayer
We pray: Heavenly Father, we thank you for your
mercy and love. May all people come to know you,
especially those who sin against your love. May
we rejoice when the sinner returns to you and let
us encourage one another to pray for those who
persecute us. Amen.
Wisdom of the Fathers
“Peace is not merely the absence of war; nor can it
be reduced solely to the maintenance of a balance of
power between enemies; nor is it brought about by
dictatorship. Instead, it is rightly and appropriately
called an enterprise of justice. Peace results from
that order structured into human society by its divine
Founder and actualized by men as they thirst after ever
greater justice. The common good of humanity finds
its ultimate meaning in the eternal law. But since the
concrete demands of this common good are constantly
changing as time goes on, peace is never attained
once and for all, but must be built up
ceaselessly. Moreover, since the human
will is unsteady and wounded by sin,
the achievement of peace requires a
constant mastering of passions and the
vigilance of lawful authority…
O rdinary T ime
…For this reason, all Christians are
urgently summoned to do in love what
the truth requires, and to join with all
true peacemakers in pleading for peace
and bringing it about.”

Faith Formation
School Starts
The 2011-2012 Faith Formation school year started
on Sunday, September 11, 2011. Both children and
catechists were excited to start the new year. It was an
opportunity for children to renew their friendships and
establish new ones.
We have another outstanding group of catechists this year,
and we are proud to have them teaching our children.
The future of our Church is with today’s children. Their
spirituality will grow through our Faith Formation Program.
This year’s catechists and aides include: Cheryl Janes,
Christopher McGuire, Debbie Kopko, Ellen Higgins, Jan
Vastola, Jennifer Joseph, Karen & Rick Szatkowski, Loren
Hoffman, Loretta Judy, Mary Chalhoub, Mary Ellen Metro,
Melissa O’Brien, Michelle Mattia, Molly Anton, Natalie
Campbell, Jenny & Neal Borter, Pat Zewalk, Sylvia De
Feo, Tara Lichtlin, Tess Schumacher, and Trish Schwarz.
Our catechists are being commissioned at the 11:00 a.m.
Mass on Sunday, September 18. Afterwards, there will be
a brunch for them in the ballroom.

Session. This training provides our children with the tools
they need to overcome the advances of someone who
intends to do them harm. Safe Environment Training is
implemented through a “Touching Safety Program” that
has been created for specific age groups:
•
Grades 1 through 2
•
Grades 3 through 5
Safe Environment Training for Sunday’s Faith Formation
students will be conducted on Sunday, October 9, at 9:15
a.m. Safe Environment Training for Wednesday’s Faith
Formation students will be conducted on Wednesday,
October 12, at 5:30 p.m. The Diocese has changed
the Safe Environment Training policy for the 2011-2012
school year. Unless we receive a signed opt-out form in
advance from the child’s parents or guardian, the child will
automatically be opted-in for Safe Environment training.
If the child is absent for Safe Environment Training without
the Faith Formation Office having his/her signed opt-out
form, it will count as an absence and the child will have
to attend a make-up Safe Environment Training session.
Parents cannot avoid this training for their children by
simply not attending. An opt-out form is required for the
child to miss the training!
Opt-out forms will be made available through the child’s
folder and the Faith Formation Office. If you prefer, you
can call the Faith Formation Office on 239-514-2927 ext.

We believe in one God,

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds
from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic
and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism
for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection
of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRESENT TEXT FOR PEOPLE
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand
of the Father.
He will come again to judge
the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son,
our Lord,
who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again
from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand
of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge
the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting. Amen.
