oday’s Gospel describes our Blessed Lord’s ardent desire
to seek after the “lost sheep,” those who have become
disoriented in life, those who feel abandoned and isolated;
those who are steeped in sin and darkness; those who have
wandered away from God’s designs for their lives. It’s really
an amazing Gospel passage because it shows how Jesus wants
that everyone might find their way back home, and
experience the healing, soothing balm of forgiveness, the
welcome, and the inner peace that the life of the grace and
friendship with God can bring.
Pope Francis has been talking incessantly about the New
Evangelization, and about implementing a more missionary,
proactive outreach to the “lost sheep” of our day. He has told
bishops and priests to rethink their pastoral efforts. To go out
into the community and make Christ and His Church better
known. This may mean utilizing new means of
communication. This may also mean using some tried and
true methodologies afresh. No matter the approach, statistics
show that there is much work to be done on behalf of the
Kingdom of Christ. Jesus’ contemporary followers must
welcome new members to the fold of the faith. We must also
reach out to those that have wandered away from our
company. We have so much to share with them, so much
hope. Life finds its true meaning when we cultivate our
spiritual core. God’s grace and the blessing of togetherness in
encountering Him in Word, Sacrament, and community,
strengthen us for the journey ahead. They give us direction,
hope, and confidence. What we would not do to bring
someone to Christ for the salvation of their mortal soul?
The Synod of the Archdiocese of Miami, convoked by
Archbishop Wenski, is a stellar example of unearthing new
potentials, new goals, and new momentum in the service of
God’s people. Significant as well is the Archbishop’s concern
about the hundreds of thousands of non-practicing Catholics
throughout South Florida, who in the depth of their beings
are in search of a spiritual home, whether they realize it or
not. What can we do to welcome them? How can we make
our parish more welcoming? How can we get the word out to
foster a renaissance of the Catholic faith in South Florida?
Our parish is currently on a course to energetically
develop a full flowering of ministries and services, which
invite greater participation of members of the Catholic fold.
It also seeks to welcome more people into our worshipping
assembly, even if they had once been among us and
wandered from our company. I am currently in the process of
sending out 1,100 personally signed letters to the many
registered parishioners whom we haven’t heard from in a
long time. Perhaps they moved elsewhere, but perhaps they
are still in our neighborhood and simply need a word of
welcome to come back “home.”
So much has happened at Little Flower in the past two
years! There are four new priests on staff; a new fulltime
Youth Minister; twenty seven vibrant ministries; gorgeous
enhancements to our liturgies, including new music ministry
on Sunday evenings; a new Religious Education Office; a
gorgeous new website for your daily perusal. Even the bells
are ringing again at Little Flower! As we approach Christmas,
an amazing life-size Nativity Scene will beckon many to come
and contemplate the mystery of Christ. We certainly have
much to talk about and share!
May we follow Jesus’ lead in going after the “lost,” as we
build the Kingdom to the glory of His name.

WENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
SEPTEMBER 15, 2013
A clean heart create for me, O God,
and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
— Psalm 51:12
M
LAVISH FORGIVENESS
oses appeals to God for compassion in today’s
first reading. The point of Moses’ pleas is not to
provide a blueprint for pacifying an angry God, but to
demonstrate that no matter our sin and its
grievousness, God will always forgive.
In his Letter to Timothy, Paul uses himself, the
great sinner, as an example of just how great is God’s
forgiveness. Finally, today’s Gospel parables create a
mural of God’s forgiving love. Like a diligent
housekeeper, a good shepherd, a loving father, God
goes out of the way to recover the lost and to forgive.
By pointing out that the woman leaves her nine silver
pieces, that the shepherd leaves his ninety-nine sheep
waiting, and the father leaves his elder son upset, Jesus
urges us to abandon a stingy view of life. If God can be
so generous, so forgiving, and so loving to those
deemed unworthy, we must act likewise.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
lthough New Year’s Day has been fixed firmly on
January 1 for several hundred years, Labor Day has
the feel of a great dividing line between leisure and
routine. The pace of life has since picked up, and new
schedules and commitments crowd us. In the
background is God’s call to consider the third
commandment, still life-giving and binding, to make
holy the Lord’s Day by worship and rest. Jews see the
Sabbath, Saturday, not so much as a day of worship,
but as a day of rest, a day of renewing friendship with
God by delighting in the beauty of creation and the joy
of family and friends. It is a day for contemplating the
wonder of God’s creation, but not disturbing it.
For Christians in the first three centuries, the
Lord’s Day, Sunday, was not for rest, but worship. It
was a regular work day. People met before dawn, and
after Eucharist hurried off to daily routines. Today we
come to Mass, but many hurry off to essential work,
not a day of rest. The Lord’s Day is not the Sabbath,
but we can enhance Sunday’s ability to transform us if
we consider embracing some Sabbath values: having a
family meal, going for a walk in a beautiful place,
making room in our lives to open ourselves more fully
to holiness of life in Christ.

CHURCH HAPPENINGS
YEAR OF FAITH:
SEPTEMBER 2013
Virtues to Practice and Obstacles to
Beware on the Journey of Faith
Meditation: Faith and charity each require the other. Many
Christians lovingly dedicate their lives to the lonely,
marginalized, or excluded, as those who most deserve our
attention and support, for in them the reflection of Christ’s own
face is seen (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 14).
The parish’s “Year of Programs” revs up just as the Church’s
“Year of Faith” winds down. But faith, as Pope Benedict has
reminded us, is a journey that lasts a lifetime. September’s first
two Sunday Gospels bid us embrace humility, the non-negotiable
prerequisite for communion with God in prayer and with our
neighbor in self-sacrificing service (Catechism, 2559, 2631), and to
let nothing deter us from following Jesus. Mid-September’s “Lost
and Found Sunday” asks: Is Jesus’ picture of God mine—that is, a
shepherd risking all to save one lost sheep, a woman scouring the
house to find one lost coin, a father forgetting past wrongs to
welcome home a lost son? If so, has this Year of Faith made me
“look” any more like that God? On September’s final Sundays,
Amos, Israel’s “Prophet of Justice,” joins Jesus in warning us about
the dangers of wealth. Are we “children of light” as eager to serve
others as “children of the world” are to serve themselves? Nor is it
sufficient simply to “do no harm.” In Jesus’ parable, the wealthy
man did nothing hurtful to Lazarus; his sin was doing nothing at
all!
Mission: Change whatever in my life contradicts the
humility that Jesus expects of his disciples; seek the lost; forgive
unconditionally; open my eyes that I may see and serve Christ in

my neighbor.

That people today, often overwhelmed by
noise, may rediscover the value of silence

redescubran el valor del silencio y sepan
escuchar la voz de Dios y los hermanos.

Cristianos Perseguidos:
That Christians suffering persecution in
many parts of the world may by their
witness be prophets of Christ's love.

spirituality of the Acolyte. The
ministry of the Acolyte is open to anyone who has
already received their First Holy Communion and
you’re never too old to serve the Lord! Contact

and families can bring their pets (dogs, cats,
hamsters, birds, ducks, gold fish, etc. ) on leashes,
in cages, or carried in arm, so as to receive a
special blessing. The ten minute ceremony will be
an occasion to praise God for the wonders of
creation, and thank the Lord for the delight that
animals and pets bring to our lives.
ALL ARE WELCOME.

considerados no merecedores, nosotros debemos
actuar de igual manera.

WHY IS IT
A man wakes up after sleeping
under an ADVERTISED blanket
on an ADVERTISED mattress
and pulls off ADVERTISED pajamas
bathes in an ADVERTISED shower
shaves with an ADVERTISED razor
brushes his teeth
with ADVERTISED toothpaste
washes with ADVERTISED soap
puts on ADVERTISED clothes
drinks a cup
of ADVERTISED coffee
drives to work
in an ADVERTISED car
and then . . . .
refuses to ADVERTISE
believing it doesn’t pay.
Later if business is poor
he ADVERTISES it for sale.
