B
elgrade is the city that lasts
through ages. Rulers, armies,
builders and destroyers have
been changing in it, and today
the part of that history is visible in
many places. Yet, what cannot be
seen but felt by everybody, even by
those who are in this city for the first
time, is the unusual blend of spiritual
similarities and differences. No wonder
since representatives of many nations
and confessions live in Belgrade and
they all have in common that unusual
emotional attitude towards this city
that is neither the most beautiful,
nor the biggest or the most modern in
the world but still has that miraculous
energy and charm that turn it into one
of the eligible capitals in this part of
the world. Therefore it has officially
been awarded the name City of the
Future in Southern Europe.
From its first issue our magazine has
been searching for collocutors who
solve the secret of the Belgrade life.
So, in the autumn issue there are
several interviews with the people
who are well known all over the world.
Those are the former football star
Dragan Dzajic and magic basketball
player Aleksandar Djordjevic. Talking
about Belgrade are also famous theatre
director Nebojsa Bradic and Denis
Huber, Head of the Council of Europe
Mission to Serbia.

When I compare Belgrade with other cities I notice it has
European metropolises’ spirit and tradition, and liveliness,
hilarity and fast economic growth characteristic for the Brazilian
ones. The Brazilians and your people have also one more thing in
common – passion for football and you both have Marakana

n May this year Serbia took over
the six-month Chairmanship of the
Committee of (Foreign) Ministers
of Council of Europe (CoE) that
comprises the Foreign Affairs Ministers
of all 46 member states (in the
meantime Montenegro has become the
47th), or their permanent diplomatic
representatives in Strasbourg, where
the headquarters of the oldest
European organization is located.
Therefore Belgrade has become the
host to many political, cultural and
other events linked to the CoE and got
its chance to show the world its best
bright side – open, friendly, hospitable,
cosmopolitan.
Serbia’s successful presentation
to the CoE Committee of Ministers
– the chance Serbia will again have
only in 25 years time – was realized
in good part thanks to the man who,
in October 2006, became the Head of
the Council of Europe Mission to Serbia
and distinguished himself during
his successful longstanding work as
the chief administrative member of
the Secretariat of the Committee
of Ministers responsible to help the
Chairman in political matters and
relations with media. Frenchman Denis
Huber, who is at the same time Special
Representative of the CoE Secretary
General in Serbia, has also brought to
Belgrade his wife Florance, sons Nathan
(10) and Leo (8) and fifteen-months old
daughter Lola (“we call her bebica, in
Serbian, says Mr. Huber“). The oldest
daughter from the first marriage Louise
(20) has made useful combination of
pleasure and work this summer. As a
student of the international trade, she
has spent 2.5 months on practical work
at the Belgrade hotel “Hyatt.“ She has
also taken an advantage of that time
to get to know Belgrade with the help
of her father. As the French, after her
father, and the Brazilian, after her
mother, Louise discovered in Belgrade
that exciting blend of the two milieus,
says Mr. Huber admitting himself that
the Serbian capital resembles Paris
by its cosmopolitanism and historical
heritage and Rio de Janeiro by
temperament and liveliness.
What are the things you
appreciate the most about Belgrade
and what are those that bother you?
How do you and your family find the
life in this city?
“Here I like people the most
- cordial, hospitable and attentive
towards newcomers. This is the
opinion that both my family and
I have. Citizens of Belgrade and
Belgrade smell of dynamics, they are
full of life. Everywhere in the city I see
young people. Statistically Serbia does
not have so many young people as you
may think when you meet them in the
streets, restaurants, parks…“
“In Belgrade we also feel very safe,
me, my wife and children. We had
never had any unpleasantness or heard
of such things from our acquaintances,
colleagues or friends. It’s great that
here everybody can walk through
the city day or night! This is surely
the biggest surprise for strangers
who come to Serbia with prejudices
acquired during the Milosevic regime
and violent clashes in this area. I am
glad Belgrade is in the Center of the
region so that my children can travel
around and get to know the countries
of the region. We can shortly reach any
place by car, although the roads are
not the best ones.“
“There are two things in Belgrade
that bother me – traffic chaos
and pollution. The Serbs are very
aggressive, careless drivers who do
not obey the traffic rules. Even after
a year spent here I am still surprised.
Of course, consequences of this are
frequent traffic accidents. That is
why the car insurance is so expensive.
Therefore I do not allow my sons to
drive bicycles round the city, the thing
they were used to do in France. Here
there are no bicycle lanes and it’s
really dangerous to drive alongside the
careless drivers.“
“It is interesting the women
drivers also behave the same as men.
In France women have the reputation
as better, careful drivers who have
averagely less accidents.“
“The other thing that bothers
me and that I can never be used to
is the air that is extremely polluted
and cleanliness that is not at the
desirable level, especially in the city
surroundings. The Germans and the
Swiss would be horrified! I do not dare
to swim in the Danube or Sava Rivers,
although I spend most of the time with
my family outdoors, by the rivers.“
How would you describe Belgrade
to your French friends? What places
would you recommend them to visit,
what food to try? Is there something
you would suggest them to avoid?
I would describe Belgrade as a very
interesting city with really long and rich
past that is testified by the numerous
historical and cultural monuments,
archeological sites, architecture…
I would describe it as a city full of
energy, that lives 24 hours a day, with
restaurants and shops open the whole
day long and even till the late at night,
where the people are friendly and gay
and know how to enjoy life. Here there
is everything an educated, civilized
European citizen would wish for: good
theatre plays, great music, delicious
food and drinks, various places to go
out, for a walk and excursions, amazing
nature… There is no friend of ours who
left Belgrade dissatisfied and dashed.

On the contrary. What they have
seen and experienced was enough
to make them forget suspicion and
prejudices they possibly came with
and wish to come back again.“
“What I would suggest everybody
to see by all means in Belgrade is the
Kalemegdan Park. Then I would advise a
backward time trip and getting to know
Belgrade as a prehistoric settlement
that was a part of the Roman, and
after that, the Ottoman empires, as
a capital of one, and then the other
Serbian kingdom, the capital of the
’big’ Yugoslavia (SFRJ), the place that
lived through many war destructions,
was ruined by the Nazi bombing in the
Second World War and not so long ago
by the NATO bombing…“
“There are a lot of restaurants
in Belgrade that offer various foods
for every taste, with different and
pleasant ambience and various prices
so that everybody can afford it. We
like Serbian national cuisine (children
like cevapcici the most) and the only
objection we have is that all the dishes
are too fat and heavy for our taste and
with too much meat. Kafanas lack
better offer of vegetables.“
“Therefore we preferably eat in
the ’Iguana’ restaurant whose owner
likes to make us pleasant surprises
with his imaginative creations. We also
frequent ’Stara koliba’ on the Sava
River, ’Little Bay’ on Dorcol and ’Casa
d’ Italia,’ and when we wish to eat
some exotic food we go to the Chinese
restaurant ’Mao Tao’ or the Mexican
’Zapata.’ French food is best prepared
at home and especially by my wife.“
What is your favourite part of
Belgrade? Where do you go out in
your free (private) time? What are
the places in this town that your
children like the most?
“My favourite part of the city,
beside historic places, is by all means
Kosutnjak where I often go for a
walk with my family, and of course
Kalemegdan. My children particularly
like the Zoo (maybe not so big, but
at the nice place and with various
animals) and Military Museum where
they climb cannons for hours.“
“We regularly go to the Diplomatic
Club in Banjica where we socialize
with friends and colleagues and swim
in the pool.“
What is your favourite Serbian
word?
“Two of them that we most
frequently utter at home: ’hajde’ and
’moze’.“
This year, during the Serbian
presidency of the Committee of
Ministers of the CoE, you have had the
opportunity to meet various people
and see different Belgrade. What are
your main impressions?
“Since Serbia has taken over the sixmonth Chairmanship of the Committee
of Ministers of the CoE I have really met
and had a chance to cooperate with
great number of people, among them
mostly politicians and civil servants,
but also artists and ordinary people
at national and local level. I have
established perfect relationships with
all of them, at professional and often
personal level. Although the Serbian
political system is closer to the American
than the French one (in the USA civil
servants change with governments,
and in France professionals remain in
Mr. Huber with his daughter Lola - “bebica”

administration), there was no problem
regarding the cooperation with the CoE
even after the takeover.“
“I have been lucky to be the
chief to an exquisite team in the
Belgrade CoE office and I’ve had
pleasure of meeting an array of
painters, musicians and other artists
from Serbia who I highly esteem (for
example, painters Cile, who exhibits
in Paris, and Milija Belic from
Lazarevac, as well as the musician
Vojislav Djukic from the group ’S
vremena na vreme’). Therefore I
was not always in the position to talk
only Kosovo, The Hague and political
issues.“
As a diplomat you have travelled
around the world. How would you
compare Belgrade with other cities
you have lived in?
“The Council of Europe activities
are mainly going on in the organization
headquarters in Strasbourg (some of
them, not so often, in Lisbon, Brussels,
Graz and Budapest) so that I was not so
much away from France. I have spent
the longest time in Brazil. Therefore
when I compare Belgrade with
other cities I notice it has European
metropolises’ spirit and tradition, and
liveliness, hilarity and fast economic
growth characteristic for the Brazilian
ones. The Brazilians and your people
have also one more thing in common
– passion for football. You even have
Marakana in Belgrade.
If there would be a single common
characteristic between Frenchmen
and Serbs – what would it be?
“I would say we share several
common characteristics. The first one
being the machismo: in both countries
it is very strong. The second one is
the Southern temperament. We are
not so strict in obeying rules like the
Northerners. Third, we both have hard
and rich history that we are strongly
attached to. Both here and in France
the past is very important and has
influence on the present. The question
is – how to deal with it. We did it more
successfully as can be seen through our
reconciliation with the Germans.“
“Finally, both Frenchmen and Serbs
adore good music, although we have
never won the ’Eurosong’ contest.“

with the Sports Brand
The greatest value of the basketball Belgrade are the
courts between buildings where the “basket“ is played
T
he status and reputation
that Sasa Djordjevic enjoys
among the sport fans is such
that no one can compromise
his place in the gallery of great men
in any way. He was the member
of the Belgrade “Partizan“, Italian
“Philips“ and “Teamsystem“ clubs,
NBA’s “Portland“, the best Spanish
Barcelona teams and the “Real“
Madrid… He was the champion and
the Yugoslav National Cup winner, as
well as the two-time Spain champion.
His famous last-second three-point
shots in the game with the Spanish
“Joventut“ have secured triumph
for “Partizan“ in the European Cup
and fame and place in the Serbian
and European basketball history for
himself.
He has played 108 games in the
national team jersey. Among the
treasure medals Sasa Djordjevic can
also boast with the Olympic Games
silver, World Championship gold and
even the three best decorations won
at the Old Continent championship.
He has retired from professional
basketball on July 4, 2005 with an
exhibition game in front of the home
crowd in the Belgrade sports hall
“Pionir“. He played his farewell game
that was even greater thanks to 60
basketball legends, his co-players and
once fierce opponents, who came from
all over the world to play in his honour.
He left the court with the tears in his
eyes but he remained in basketball as
a coach. Last year he was named head
coach of one of his former teams,
“Armani Jeans Milano“. He is the most
possible candidate who could replace
Zoran Moka Slavnic in the place of the
national team coach.
He is one of the best playmakers
ever in the history of the both
Serbian and European basketball.
Fascinating technique, wonderful
grace, leadership lucidity and an
extraordinary
preciseness
made
him leave permanent trace in each
team he played in. Aleksandar
Djordjevic is also one of the founders
of the humanitarian organization
“Group Seven“, one of the UNICEF
ambassadors of good will, and the
“Belgrade Marathon“ Board of
Directors President.
The Belgrade citizens speak about
him with affection and love and great
respect – he is a gentleman, dandy, urban
legend… Emotions are reciprocal - Sasa
also respects Belgrade and its citizens.
Asked about what he likes the most in
his hometown he promptly replies:
“All that makes Belgrade the
Belgrade. It is unique and in many
things unrepeatable. I love its people
as much as its way of living. In fact, I
am proud of what I have just uttered
because it is not just my personal
emotion but the fascination of each
and every well-intentioned person
who comes to the Serbian capital,
intentionally or by chance. Two mighty
rivers, marvelous beauty of the mouth
where the Danube embraces the Sava
River, mystic Kalemegdan Fortress or
the sublime character of the Saint
Sava’s Cathedral are the images
that are memorized forever. Stroll
down the Knez Mihailova Street turns
into a small holiday and even bigger
pleasure. Nowhere in the world is
there a street with such a serenity and
gaiety. A street with so many smiles.
Belgrade is the metropolis of charm
and also of the spirit authenticity that
makes it, in incredibly discrete way,
different from other big and equally
interesting
world
metropolises.
Also the past of this city, its history
and everything it went through,
make it the giant in comparison

to other similar ones that are not
familiar with Golgotha of several
centuries’ conquests, devastations
and destructions. Therefore, there is
not one thing in Belgrade, the street
or the neighbourhood I love. I love
everything that is Belgrade.“
How big was the sport’s
contribution for such Belgrade to
become the European Center?
“Immeasurably great. Belgrade
is definitely the city of sport and
successful athletes and this is exactly
what makes me, personally, happy
and proud – the knowledge sport and
sportspeople are a kind of the trade
mark of my city, its brand. Belgrade
honours and appreciates winners. We
are, in fact, the people who loves
everyone being against it and the one
that feels very happy beating ’the
whole world’. In sport we had chances
to win even when the opponents were
better, more powerful. And we were
extremely happy for Belgrade and
Serbia experiencing it as their great
satisfaction.“
Since you say Belgrade is the city
of the successful sportspeople, tell
us who are those who impressed you
the most?
“With regard to sport Belgrade has
really something to boast with. As a boy
I used to admire the basketball skill
of Kicanovic, Slavnic, Dalipagic… My
heroes were also the ’Metaloplastika’
handball and national team players
Vujovic, Vukovic, Isakovic… I have
respected football masters in the ’Red
Star’ jersey, but as a ’Partizan’ fan I
was sure there was no better player
than the black-and-white captain
Momcilo Moca Vukotic. I was also proud
of the Belgrade citizen Nenad Stekic’s
European record in the long jump.
I admired the ’Partizan’ water polo
players who ravaged Europe, national
water polo team… Yet, my sport is
the basketball. Therefore, if I have to
single somebody out that would be the
basketball players generation I have
played with and experienced all the
joys and sorrows that make sport so
great – Divac, Danilovic, Paspalj…“
In a way the basketball is the
identity card of urban Belgrade you
belong to. Do you agree with this?
“Absolutely. With their ideas and
work, Bora Stankovic, Nebojsa Popovic,
Radomir Rasa Saper, Aleksandar Aca
Nikolic and their followers have
made Belgrade the capital of not only
Serbian and Yugoslav but also the
European basketball that has become
very valuable. The city pride was that
wonderful ’OKK Belgrade’ that was led
by the legendary Radivoje Korac. ’Red
Star’ has become the powerful club and
’Partizan’ also. The state champion
was the unforgettable team of the
basketball charmers from the Belgrade
neighbourhood named Red Cross with
well-known Raznjatovic, Ivkovic, Jaric,
Damjanovic, Maroevic…The group
of around hundred and even more
Belgrade clubs’ players were the most
powerful part of the Yugoslav national
team that has reached the very top
of the world. Belgrade has also given
coaches as the famous Professor Nikolic,
Ranko Zeravica, brothers Ivkovic,
Zeljko Obradovic, Boza Maljkovic.
Once the basketball temple was the
New Belgrade Sports Hall, and today
it is ’Pionir’. Tomorrow it will probably
be ’Arena’. Nevertheless, the greatest
value of the basketball Belgrade are
the courts between buildings where the
’basket’ is played.“
Which of the numerous memories
that link you to Belgrade would you
single out?

“Everything that I have experienced
while playing in the ’Partizan’ jersey
– black-and-white titles and all the
breathtaking welcome parties after
our national team successes. I will
personally remember this as long as I
am alive. Those were the moments I was
extremely proud of being the citizen of
Belgrade and even more of the fact my
Belgrade knew how to respect those
big sport successes. That is something
I wish every athlete could experience
in the future - the moment when you
become aware that the whole city has
come to bow to you.“
What is that that makes the spirit
of Belgrade – its people, night life,
geographic location, culture, history?
“Belgrade is the specificum and all
that you have listed makes it as such.
There is probably something more that
makes that invisible city pore, known
and recognizable maybe only to the
citizens of Belgrade who are proud
of their great and openhearted city.
Geographic location is possibly the
biggest reason for numerous conquerors
struggling to reign the city on the
banks of the Rivers Sava and Danube,
the city whose back is guarded by the
beautiful Mount Avala, the city where
two civilizations border. That is why
the history of Belgrade is something
special. This is the place where the
culture of the East and West permeate
and miraculously mix not only in
architecture and food but also in
everyday life, practice, customs…“
In case you have to persuade a
stranger to live in Belgrade what would
you use as a key argument?
“First of all, the stranger will shortly
stop feeling as such. This is very important
for somebody who intentionally or
accidentally becomes the citizen
of a new city. We, who for the sake of
sport or the business we are in had to
live for shorter or longer period in some
foreign country, are those who are aware
of this the best. Belgrade knows how to
adopt, embrace and make the Belgrade
citizen of everyone who steps on its
streets. According to unwritten rules it
gives the foreigner the best it has, the
part of itself. And that is Belgrade. Most
of the other cities are not like the
Belgrade is!“

of a Sea
Adventure
T
he endeavour to turn one part
of Belgrade’s Tax Free Zone near
the Danube, in 52, Francuska
Street, into an Ali Baba’s cave
with delicacies was exceptionally well
received. Everything was new, and yet
so familiar, like a scene from a summer
holiday. The interior is even today
an essential feature of every Porto
restaurant. Within short time, Porto
became a favourite both among students
and diplomatic corps, businessmen and
artists, among all those who enjoy their
meals as true hedonists would. And they
want it to be plentiful. The rest is a story
about a very balanced development
strategy of a businesman Dusan Radovic.
Restaurants in Moscow, St. Petersburg,
Rome, are just a confirmation that Porto
franchise is an excellent investment for
those who see restaurant management
as a good business PORTO restaurants
are gastronomic oases, a breath of fresh
Mediterranean air in the everyday culinary
offer. They all have a common philosophy
and atmosphere, from Belgrade, through
Moscow to St. Petersburg. Porto is a

reasonable prices and more than ample
portions. It is a restaurant where even
the most demanding and fastidious
customers, used to exclusive seafood
restaurants, as well as those people who
are just beginning to get to know the
charms of seafood cuisine feel equally
good. They say it is easy to eat healthy
food when there’s fi sh on the table. Why
it is so, everyone who sets eyes on the
fine catch from the sea knows. At the
most prominent place in the restaurant,
near the kitchen, glittering on the
ice, it lies exposed to our view, as if it
hadn’t been only yesterday the part of
an endless blue of Ionian, Adriatic or
Tyrrhenian Sea.
The main characteristic of Porto
restaurants is that there is an everyday
menu and the daily menu which depends
on the catch and your wishes. Fish and
marine delicacies are displayed as
one gastronomic gallery. The choice is
yours. You decide both on the size of
the portion and the way in which it is
to be prepared. Fish and all shell fish
can be ordered in portions of 100gr or
in quantities you are in the mood for.
This makes us unique. Restaurant Porto
Belgrade, after being fully redecorated,
was opened on February 9th 2004.
It possesses the old well-known
atmosphere, but with new fine upgrades
such as lighting, interior and the offer.
The kitchen is also new, completely
renovated and optimised to fulfil the
demands of numerous guests during
the day. After more than a year lasting
renovation of the pool, the langoustes
again occupy the restaurant aquarium
and part of the attractive off er on our
guests’ tables. As regards the wine card
we especially point out extraordinary
Italian wines at the prices one fi nds
hard to resist. In Belgrade some of these
wines you can only taste in Porto. The
novelty is that the guests sitting in
the lower part of the restaurant, on
famous and traditional Porto benches
get a 10% discount. That in Porto you
can have the best espresso in town is
no news for our regular customers. For
others and for those who come for the
first time it is just another reason to
come again.

The oldest Serbian
medieval manuscript
written in the last
quarter of the 12th
century, since 2005
on the UNESCO list,
has been presented
to the citizens
of Belgrade
A
t the end of September, at
the ceremony in the Belgrade
Saint Sava’s Cathedral, Serbia
joined the European Heritage
Days manifestation that is being held
in the whole Europe.
The 12th century Gospel was put
on display in the special capsule
placed in the Cathedral’s central part.
This precious manuscript that gives
evidence of the Serbian medieval
spirituality has gathered in the Vracar
Cathedral all the representatives of
the cultural community, prelates and
corpse diplomatic members.
Through the glass showcase visitors
were able to see two pages of the
Miroslav’s Gospel with drawn miniatures.
The old manuscript has initiated more
happenings in the St. Sava’s Cathedral,
such as the techniques of calligraphy,
mosaic, miniatures and paintings
presented by the Serbian Orthodox
Church Academy students.
For short the inside of the
Cathedral has been turned into the
workshop for the book binding and
gilding experts, miniature engraving
masters Dobrivoje and Miodrag
Vucicevic, sculptor Bojana Minic and
lapidary Milan Jovkovic. Day and night
the artists have been doing frescoes,
icons, mosaics, carving stone and
wood, copying miniatures and writing
Gospel in calligraphy.
The Miroslav’s Gospel represents
local culture in the European
manifestation not only because it is
the oldest Serbian illustrated Cyrillic
manuscript written in the Old Church
Slavic but also because it is the
symbol of the link between Serbia and
the European culture. Decorations

ragan Dzajic is the football
and sports icon of Serbia. He
is the best footballer ever in
the “Red Star,“ Serbia, and
former Yugoslavia. In many opinion
polls his name was in the “club of
the hundred best European and world
players of the 20th century.“ During
thirteen seasons (1963-1975 and 19771978) he has spent in the jersey of the
“Red Star“ with which he has won five
National Champion titles and three
Cups, he has played 590 fixtures and
scored 287 goals. He is the favourite
and idol of millions of fans. As an
international footballer he has played
for the France’s Bastia (1975 - 1977).
Tall with long stride, extremely
fast… distinctive lefthander. Grand
master of dribbles that have ended
in central-kicks with millimetre
precision. Scorer and perfect realizer
of free kicks. He has shaken down the
goals of the best world goalkeepers.
For the Yugoslav national team, which
he has led 53 times as the captain, he
has played 85 fixtures and scored 23
goals. He has also been remembered
as the best in the Yugoslav selection
that was the European vice-champion
in Italy in 1968. His goal during the

semi-final fixture with the English
can still be seen at the beginning
of many sports TV broadcasts. He
has also participated in the 1974
World Championship in Germany. As
an extremely attractive footballer
he has played five times for various
European and world selections
(against Brazil in Rio in 1968, in
Lisbon in 1970, in Moscow in 1971, in
Homburg and Basel in 1972).
Upon the career completion he
remained in the club where he had
acquired name and reputation. He
had long been the Sports Director
and after that the President of the
most popular Serbian football group
that has won the greatest number
of trophies. He is the creator of the
project that has brought the “Red
Star“ the European Champion title
in 1991. In the same year, led by Mr.
Dragan Dzajic at their helm, Belgrade
red-and-whites won the International
“Toyota Cup“ that made them the
best 1991 world team. That was the
best year ever in the history of this
club founded on March 4, 1945.
You are the citizen of Belgrade
as long as the member of the “Red
Star“. This is the period that can be
measured by decades, isn’t it?
“That’s right. From my birthplace
Ub, small town several dozens of
kilometres far away from the capital, I
came to Belgrade as a 16 year-old boy.
At that time I could have not dreamed
of being the part of the ’Star’ for
exactly 42 years with the exception of
two years that I have spent in France. I
am also the citizen of Belgrade, but for
a longer period. This is the city where I
live happily with my family, surrounded
by fiends and, I admit, I love it very
much. It was a metropolis even back
in 1962 when I first came as a talented
football player. It was a big and a little
bit mystic city I lived in completely day
and night. It is incomparably bigger
today and much nicer – literally the
metropolis. When I describe it to the
people who have never visited it I say
Belgrade is the city with the biggest
soul in the world.“
Currently you don’t have
everyday obligations and have
enough free time. How do you
spend it?
“I must confess I enjoy in
everything. Work in the ’Red Star’
was a very demanding one that was
consuming all the time both during the
week and the weekends. Now I plan
my day calmly. I still get up very early
and do my morning rituals including
exercise. I also have my family
obligations – I enjoy spending more
time with my daughters, taking them
to school and back home. I have more
time for going out and we all often
go somewhere for lunch or dinner, to
visit friends, to a concert or theatre.
What I never skip are long walks with
my good friends. Where do we go? To
Kosutnjak that has perfect footway
in the vicinity of the city Center and
most often to Ada, sometimes in the
morning or early evening or even late
evening. Of course, a part of the day
is dedicated to the people ’we can’t
live without’ and small-talks with
them.“
You have many acquaintances
and friends. When those from far
away come to visit you where do
you take them?
“It’s never the same. It depends
on who they are. But there is one
thing they all have in common
– the lack of time and therefore
it’s impossible to show them
everything you want in Belgrade
in a couple of days. They all want
to see the Kalemegdan Park and
Knez Mihailova Street. Thanks to
its history, fortress, gates, Roman
Well and monuments Kalis is the
real fascination for everybody. Knez
Mihailova Street is something else.
Probably because of the prejudices
they came with they all admit to
have been pleasantly surprised not
believing Belgrade has something
like that – the street that is in
many things better and more
beautiful than the similar ones in
the European and world metropolises.
I must also confess that Knez Mihailova
is the part of the city that every
citizen of Belgrade can proudly show
to any European. And, moreover, if
you end the day in Skadarlija… It bows
everybody over. All the smells of the
former bohemian Belgrade, cobble
stone, good wine and tasty food,
authentic music, pastry hearts
and people beaming with good
humour are the real experience for
most foreigners that is remembered
forever.“
You point out Belgrade is
different from many European
cities you have visited. What is so
distinctive that it has?
“Belgrade is distinctive by itself,
different from the other cities and
this is good. In fact, I don’t like
comparing it with some other cities
because they do not share the same
destiny. Today Belgrade would have
been incomparably more beautiful,
even architecturally, hadn’t it been
destroyed, demolished and again
rebuilt and brought to life. What we
have to be proud of is the fact that
Belgrade has outlived all that defying
history that has been so merciless
towards the Balkans whose heart is
our city. But the greatest value of
Belgrade are its people who are the
spitting image of the city that manages
to rise above all the mishaps that have
come upon it with its optimism and
miraculous power of will.“
“Belgrade really is Europe and
its citizens are Europeans more
than Europe can even imagine. But
it does admit that when it comes
to Belgrade and get to know the
Belgrade inhabitants.“
Do you agree Belgrade is one of
the European cities also thanks to
sport you belong to?
“Absolutely. Both sport in global way
and athletes individually have made
the name of Belgrade written in capital
letters on the European sports map. Not
only because the successes achieved at
the greatest sports competitions but
also thanks to the fact that Belgrade is
really the sport city with structures that
even the richer can envy us. ’Arena’ is
one of the most beautiful halls in this
part of Europe, ’Star’s’ stadium is the
biggest in the Balkans, Ada and the
Belgrade rivers are the ideal proving
ground for the water sports… Thanks
to the ’Universiade 2009’ many existing
arenas will be revitalized and the new
ones constructed. Belgrade deserves
this all the more so since we are well
known in the sports world after great
organizational capabilities in sports
events no matter the world, European
or Balkan ones.“

KINOTEKA (FILM ARCHIVES) - MUSEUM OF THE GLOBAL IMPORTANCE
The Guardian of
the Film History
Beside the collection of 85,000 film copies and 22,000
books there is also the Lumière brothers camera
Yugoslav Film Archives with its film
archives of the global importance is
the real jewel among the Belgrade
cultural institutions. It was founded
in 1949 and after several years only it
acquired reputation that no museum
of the then Yugoslavia had. It is one
of the founders and the permanent
member of the FIAF (International
Federation of Film Archives). It has
been actively taking part in the FIAF
activities since 1951.
Today, before all, the Film Archives
is recognizable after the cinema
in the city Center. Beside this, film
connoisseurs from the whole Europe,
including the authors such as Theo
Angelopoulos, Jirzi Mencl,
Nikita Mihalkov, Ken Russell
or Vim Venders have been
coming here knowing the
Archive was the guardian of
the great treasure. Its guests
have been Akira Kurosawa
and Alfred Hitchcock.
The
Yugoslav
Film
Archives film fund makes one
of the most important and
most comprehensive film
collections in Europe. There
are more than 85,000 copies
of silent, sound, black-andwhite and colour films of
most diverse formats, on inflammable
(nitrate) and uninflammable tapes.
Foreign film collection, that creates
more than eighty percent of the
Yugoslav Film Archives fund, consists of
all the world film history most valuable
works. In the Yugoslav film fund kept are
the most important archive material
and documentaries linked with the
territory of the former Yugoslavia,
starting with the 1904 film “Krunisanje
Kralja Petra I Karadjordjevica “, the
oldest one preserved.
Books have also been preserved
here. The library has 22,000 copies,
photographs, posters and other things
such as the original camera of the
Lumière brothers who have marked
the history of the film art. All this is
available for visitors. Thanks to its
reputation, the Archives was awarded
the French government donation in
the amount of 460,000 euros for the
construction of the most modern
depot where the valuable film tapes

are kept. The Japanese government
also invested 70,000 euros in the
Archives, and the European Agency
for Development big donation of two
million euros is yet to come.
The Archives is the big school
of film. During decades cycles of
great directors, actors or national
cinematographies were shown in its
cinema. This autumn the collection of
Ingmar Bergman’s and Michelangelo
Antonioni’s achievements will be on in
the Archives cinema.
Many anecdotes and strange stories
have been connected to the Archives.
Permanent pursuit for films that
have vanished during the hundredyear history of this art brought many
film makers to Belgrade. Here have
been revealed works of the German
cinematography dating from the period
of silent film, and also recently five
films that have been missing, according
to the Hungarian experts. During the
Soviet intervention in Czechoslovakia
in 1968, big collection of films
of Jirzy Mencl, Vera Hitilova,
Milos Forman and other
directors from the golden
era of the Czechoslovakian
film was sent to Belgrade for
safekeeping. Later, as a sign of
gratefulness, the Czech Film
Archives gave this collection as
a present to Belgrade.
The Archives is situated in
the city Center, in Kosovska
Street. It has been one of the
most visited Belgrade cinemas
during the last five decades.
Belgrade audience considers it
the cultural icon of the Serbian capital.
The ticket line for some film cycles used
to be several hundred metres long.
Therefore it is not strange that it has
brought up great number of the film art
connoisseurs and was the first school
where the most important Serbian film
artists have grown up.

MR. NEBOJSA BRADIC, THE BELGRADE DRAMA THEATRE DIRECTOR
I
t seems that believing in art is
Mr. Nebojsa Bradic’s motto. He
considers that the artists should
educate us how to protect
ourselves from the impacts of everyday
life vulgar forms. He tends to search
traditional but also contemporary. He
has realized numerous projects as a
director and also as the Belgrade
Drama Theatre seven years Director.
Our collocutor is well-known
for courageously choosing his coworkers and creating the repertoire
of the theatre in the Belgrade
neighbourhood Crveni krst (Red
Cross). Besides Serbian classics,
Selimovic, Pekic, Andric, Mr. Bradic
at the same time stages the world
authors – Bond, Koljada, Ostermayer,
Hibner, and Jelinek. He has directed
some sixty plays in Serbian, Bosnian,
and Croatian theatres.
With Ms. Aja Jung he has brought
to life Belgrade Dance Festival that,
just after four years of existence, has
turned from the regional character
review into the European and even
world one thanks to the ballet troupes
that have their guest performances and
come from Biarritz, Prague, Cologne,
Israel, Brazil, Sweden… Belgrade has
got glamorous dance festival Europe
has been interested in more and more
and prestigious German magazine
“Ballettanz“ has described as “the
most important dance event in the
South-East Europe.“
Our collocutor is also one of
those who have initiated the Danube
Odyssey 2007, that has been organized
by the International Institute for
Mediterranean Theatre (IITM), UNESCO
and the Council of Europe, to stop in
Belgrade and that way make us the
part of the Mediterranean countries
network that are being connected by
the IITM headquartered in Madrid.
Mr. Nebojsa Bradic was born in
Trstenik and has graduated from the
Belgrade Faculty of Drama Arts. He
opened the doors of the big Belgrade
theatres in 1996 when, upon leaving
the place of the Director of the
Krusevac Theatre that he had made
one of the leading home theatres,
he became the Director of the
National Theatre and subsequently
of the Atelje 212. At the helm of the
Belgrade Drama Theatre he came in
1999. Sponsors and protectors have
promptly gained confidence in this
theatre thanks to the repertoire with
numerous hit plays that captured
the attention of the theatregoing
public. The result was also the quality
cooperation with embassies and
foreign cultural Centers in Belgrade.
In Belgrade he feels like a
Belgrade-born and says:
“I love Belgrade because it
reminds me of my youth - it is so
special, free and its own master. The
feeling of belonging and adequacy
I feel only in it although Belgrade
is not my hometown. Love forever
happened at the first encounter, when
long ago, even before going to school,
I have been spending my summers in
it, meeting my first friends and going
for sight correction at hearty and
amusing a lady-doctors’ who I still
remember gladly. The first experience
of discovering big and ancient city was
acquired right here and after each
trip to other metropolises I recheck it,
make it richer and praise it. Whatever
the smells, colours and sounds from
the new travels are, Belgrade is unique
and returning to it means getting back
to the childhood, wishes that led me
to the world of art, to unforgettable
memories of people who left traces
on my growing up, education and
maturing. The most important factor
that has influenced the shaping of my
personal and professional identity is,
in fact, Belgrade itself: openhearted,
multicultural, and passionate city. It
makes the part of myself as well as I
am its part and only in it I am – myself
the most.“
“I love the people in Belgrade.
Those who know how to listen and track
their own feelings, to be wayward and
warm, to become fateful friends and
fans, as well as worthy opponents and
fearless critics. Citizens of Belgrade
have that authentic feeling of freedom
and fairness that, in spite of numerous
hardships, still exists. Inhabitants

Belgrade
are
openhearted,
affectionate and beautiful, passionate
and never boring.“
Nevertheless, Belgrade has its
faults. What about them?
“I do not like chaos in Belgrade.
That chaos is the product of the
last years’ town-planning and traffic
expansion. Ten years ago I enjoyed
walking through the Vojvode Bogdana
Street where I live. Today this is
impossible. There are no more trees,
small crafts shops, no flowers, no air,
not an inch of free space – everything
is crammed with cars, buildings that

are overlooking the street and taking
away the skies, nervous people who
do not recognize each other any
more panicking the other one will
strip them off that tiny space and
freedom left. Our space and time are
being jeopardized by the construction
greediness in Belgrade that severely
threatens to destroy the quality of
life completely.“
What was the way you have been
getting to know Belgrade, conquering
it and how do you see the contrasts
this city abounds with?
“The best way to get to know
Belgrade is through socializing with
people who love it. Belgrade is by
itself authentic and its own master.
What make me happy are its numerous
contrasts of various cultures and time
époques. If you go down the wide
and the longest Belgrade street,
the one with double lanes and tram
tracks in between, the capital’s King
Aleksandar Boulevard, starting from
the Smederevo road towards the
Serbian Parliament, you have the
feeling of going through several ages
by passing several kilometres: houses
that resemble the 19th century Serbia
next to the hypermodern structures.
Belgrade is also beautiful for it has
still not been infected too much with
globalization. I have nothing against
shops like ’Zara,’ ’Mango,’ ’Benetton,’
or MacDonald’s fast-food chains, but I
rather go to the shops and restaurants
where one can recognize creativity
and personal taste. Personality is
one of very important characteristics
of the Belgrade citizens and they
realize it through the well-developed
educational network of schools and
faculties, as well as interaction with
the cultural institutions and art
manifestations such as Bitef, Bemus
and the youngest among them,
Belgrade Dance Festival.“
“Everywhere and always in
Belgrade I feel fine. I feel the best
with my family and friends but the
same goes for the theatres I work in.
I am happy about the town-planning
and cultural revitalization of the
Crveni krst, rise of the Belgrade Drama
Theatre and my co-workers, new
plays done by my colleague directors
and new generation of actors. I have
good feeling when in the theatre, in

the darkness behind the audience, I
feel that fluid that connects actors on
the stage and the audience. There,
sitting, are extremely different
social, educational and age categories
but all of them are equally fascinated
by the theatre miracle. I am currently
working on a very demanding musical
“Les Miserables“ by Alain Boublil
and Claude-Michel Schönberg in
Madlenianum that is a great challenge
and new experience. The troupe
consists of the people who are going to
help me make the play that will change
the principles and possibilities of the
musical theatre here. Good feeling and
mutual trust, accompanied by the hard
work, promise good result no matter
how complicated the task is.“
It seems that everybody in Belgrade
has his/her “own place“, public
or secret. What are your “sacred“
places?
“I prefer to go to all Belgrade
theatres, concerts held in ’Kolarac,’
and Belgrade Philharmonic, great jazz
in Save Center, paintings exhibitions
in Chaos Gallery. I frequent Belgrade
restaurants among which I would
single out ’Zaplet,’ ’Iguana,’ ’Madera,’
’Konoba’ under the Pancevo bridge.“
The Serbian capital has always
been open for strangers and it has been
easily and willingly communicating
with the world. What is the secret of
that easiness?
Belgrade is the city that has
different layers created over
the time. Discovering different
Belgrades in this contemporary one
makes the special experience for its
old-timers as well as for foreigners.
There are: Belgrade under Belgrade,
Celtic Belgrade, Roman Belgrade,
Serbian Belgrade, Ugric Belgrade,
Turkish Belgrade, Austrian Belgrade,
Jewish Belgrade, Greek-Tzintzar
Belgrade, Belgrade of Dositej
and Vuk, Belgrade of Saint Sava,
Belgrade of Crnjanski, Andric and
Pekic, Belgrade of those who were,
are and will yet to come.“
“The ideas of the Belgrade cultural
life are inseparably connected with
its Balkan roots and European goals.
Therefore in Belgrade you cannot feel

Foreigners have always been welcome
partners in Belgrade culture. Without

Festival would have not been possible
and its citizens would have not had the

Prague, Athens, Sofia… We hope to
have such impulses and initiatives

that our time is characteristic for
its extremely fast changes in almost
every sphere of life, changes that lead
to uncertainty, loss of orientation,
destabilization of moral norms and
cultural values, Belgrade culture,
with all its openness and vitality,
survives and remains reliable support
and beacon of our country’s European
perspective.“

The British National Curriculum
guidelines in all subjects are followed

Culinary Magic
A
utumn has arrived into the
Belgrade restaurant “Madera“
garden. In the nearby park
paths covered with leaves
are the first sign for the summer
menu to be put aside and specialties
characteristic for colder months to
be offered to guests. Regulars know
dishes that the winter in the Serbian
traditional homes cannot be imagined
without have already been prepared.
First of all that is the sauerkraut
used for making salad and podvarak
– chopped sauerkraut browned in the
oven and served with roast meat. Also
unavoidable is ajvar that is, unlike
other Belgrade restaurants, made in
“Madera,“ on the spot.
Finally, with the first cold days
garden also closes its doors and guests
move into the big restaurant’s twolevel hall. “Madera“ has long-standing
tradition that can also be felt in the
calm beauty of each moment spent
here. As the restaurant’s manager
Mr. Nebojsa Dapcevic says, first-class
musicians, who change every night,
are responsible for atmosphere. Duet,
trio, violins, violoncello and guitars
discretely fit into the atmosphere.

They play music that relaxes. And this
is the reason one should decide going
to a restaurant. But let’s abandon
ourselves to Mr. Dapcevic’s suggestions
and, to get started, have an appetizer
such as “Zakuska Madera,“ comprised
of fine local cheeses, smoked ham,
ham, kajmak… And then the main
course follows…
“If we are talking about
international cuisine, our foreign
guests preferably order beefsteak.
But if we have a chance to suggest
national cuisine specialties, especially
to those who are here for the first
time, then we offer unavoidable
dishes that have marked Serbian
kafanas since the 19th century till
today. Those are sarme, podvarak,
tripe with parmesan, i.e. skembici.
Twice a week ’Madera’ offers beans
prepared in various ways. This sure is
a special occasion and big reason to
come here since this dish has vanished
form the elite restaurants’ menus.“
Our collocutor says mulled wine
and cooked brandy were once much
sought for which is not the case any
more. Nevertheless, its important
place on the winter table have kept
pihtije that guests can have every
day till spring.
Fish is also very popular
especially during fast. “We adhere
to the mores and shortly before the
Christmas it is possible to order food
containing no fat and even bread
that is made in our bakery. For the
fish lovers we indeed have exquisite
offer – freshwater fish and the
smoked trout that is a hit. Saltwater
fish admirers can have sea perch,
dentex, salmon, tuna… everything
prepared in different ways.“
Mr. Dapcevic points out that some
things have changed in “Madera“
under the influence of new customs.
Guests stopped asking for ample
meals. Instead, they ask for less
but high quality food. Practices that
are not usual for standard Belgrade
restaurants have been changing in
other spheres, too. It has become
customary to have a glass of wine
or a Cuban cigar after lunch or
dinner. Novelty is also business lunch
between noon and 2 p.m. when
business people frequent the place.
They have small meals and rarely
consume alcohol drinks.
MONEY TIME MACHINE – NATIONAL BANK OF SERBIA
The First Dinar Forged
in Silver in 1875

countries money, mostly Turkish, Dubrovnik’s,
Venetian, Austrian, Ugric, and also that time

he National Bank of Serbia
Visitor Center has won the
annual Project of the Year
award given by the National
Committee of the International
Council of Museums (ICOM).
Visitor Center Project consists of
exhibition-related and educational
activities that make a unique museum
project. Opening its doors to the
widest public, the National Bank of
Serbia through its standing exhibition
“Money in the Territory of Serbia“ has
enabled its visitors to overview the
money in use in the territory of Serbia
from the time of its first appearance
to the current monetary issues and
enjoy in the ambience of one of the
most beautiful buildings in Belgrade,
dating from the 19th century, says the
citation accompanying the award of
the National Committee.
The
National
Bank
palace,
located in 12, Kralja Petra Street,

is an architectural value of the city.
According to some experts, this is
the best realization of the Serbian
academic architecture and belongs
to the most monumental palaces
constructed in Belgrade. It was
built in 1890 and reconstructed and
structurally extended in 1922 and 1925.
The architect who originally designed
the blueprint of the building and was
entrusted with the task of extending
the structure of the building was Mr.
Konstantin A. Jovanovic, who also
worked out blueprint for the interior
design as well as all the details, doors,
windows, decorations and furniture. The
National Bank palace with its complete
architectural design and inventory was
declared the Serbian cultural monument
of high importance.
The pride of the older part of the
building are the massive and elaborately
decorated chandeliers and the sculptor
Djordje Jovanovic’s gilded woman’s
bust personifying Serbia that is proudly
placed on the gallery overlooking the
shell shaped main stairs. The newer
part that is dominated by the big
window-hall has the same style of rich
decorations. The interior space abounds
in artistic handicrafts made in wood,
stone, cast and wrought iron.
In July 2004, on the occasion of the
120th anniversary of the National Bank
of Serbia, the window-hall has been
enriched with the standing exhibition
“Money at the Territory of Serbia“.
Ms. Vesna Kovac, independent expertassociate in the NBS Information Center,
points out:
“By exhibiting the chosen examples
from the National Bank of Serbia’s
numismatic collection we have shown
main flows of money at our territory. It
is important to know that the Serbian
territory through centuries was the
space where numerous intensive
historical events took place that had
impact on the money circulating in
that area.“
The best proof is the following: in
historical view, Serbia had no national
legal tender and as many as 43 foreign
currencies were in circulation.
“The standing exhibition offers
the overview of the money in use in
the territory of Serbia from the time
of its first appearance to the current
monetary issues.“
Following this conception, money
has been exhibited in several groups:
money of antiquity, medieval money,
money of the new era, and national
currency in the re-established Serbia…
The oldest National Bank money
exhibited dates back to the 4th
century BC. It was coined by the
Greek city-states and their findings
at the territory of Serbia are the
proof of the commercial contacts
between the civilized Greeks and the
barbaric tribes located in the Balkans
area. Among the exhibits particular
attention by their beauty attract the
coins of the city-state of Athens and
the Hellenistic Macedonian rulers
Philip II and Alexander the Great.
Roman money also belongs to the
antique money. Its presence in this
area is quite understandable since
at the beginning of the 1st century
AD almost the whole territory of
present-day Serbia was included into
the mighty Roman Empire. Therefore
the Roman money, coined in gold,
silver and bronze, became a part of
everyday life of the citizens living on
the conquered territories of Serbia.
The Roman Republic coined its famous
silver money – denar (denarius, in
Latin) that is exceptional. The obverse
of Roman coins always depicts the
effigy of a ruler or member of the
ruling family, while mythological and
historical scenes are represented on
the reverse.
Medieval money is characterized
by the presence of Byzantine money
in the territory of present-day Serbia
from the 5th to the 13th century. In an
iconographic sense, Byzantine money
with images of rulers and saints,
most often Christ, conveys the main
message of the unity of the divine and
temporal power.
The tradition of coining money
in the medieval Serbian state began
in the 13th century. This is the period
when King Stefan Radoslav’s silver
and copper coins were forged after
the ones that had made Byzantine
emperors. Money from the time of
the Kingdom comprises money coined
by King Stefan Dragutin and other
rulers, while the Imperial period is
represented by numerous issues of
Emperor Dusan. Emperor Dusan’s
“coronation dinar“ stands out by its
importance and beauty.
Until the mid-19th century the money
used in the territory of today’s Serbia
was that of foreign countries, mostly
Turkey, but also Dubrovnik, Venice,
Austria, Hungary and other European
monarchies. On the Turkish money
(Serbia was five centuries under the
Turkish rule), in accordance with the
Islamic tradition, predominate sultans’
ornaments and monograms. Austrian
and Hungarian money are characterized
by multitude of unusual denominations
and numerous nominal values.
During the reign of Prince Mihailo,
more than four centuries after the last
Serbian money was coined, the first
copper coins were minted in the reestablished Serbia. It was in 1868. The
first silver coins were struck in 1875,
when the national currency – the dinar
– was introduced. At the 1878 Berlin
Congress Serbia’s full independence
was formalized. A year later, in 1879,
the first gold coins of 20 dinars were
issued so that Serbia completely
fitted into the Latin Monetary Union’s
monetary standards and its money
was exchanged in equal parity for the
currency of the European monetary
union’s state members.
The issuing of paper money began
with the foundation of the Privileged
National Bank of the Kingdom of
Serbia in 1884, when the first Serbian
banknote was printed. Until 1918
the National Bank of the Kingdom of
Serbia issued nine paper banknotes,
the three of which were payable in
gold and six in silver. It is interesting
that those banknotes were printed in
France and in Belgium and that the
wording on them was in Serbian and
French, the then diplomatic language
of Europe. Female figure dominated
on them, personifying Serbia and
other images expressed local Serbian
characteristics – from girls in national
costumes to illustrations of the main
branches of the then Serbian economy:
handicraft trade, agriculture and
cattle-breeding.
The need for the “money factory“
was realized only in 1929 when
the Printing Works in the Belgrade
neighbourhood
Topcider
started
operating after the French Works
technology. The first issues with the
reading “The Kingdom of Yugoslavia“
and the date of issue December 1,
1929 were the banknotes of 10 and
100 dinars (100 of each). During
the audience, on January 17, 1931,
according to tradition, the Governor
Mr. Ignjat Bajloni, before putting
them into circulation, handed them
to His Majesty.

This curriculum examines social
aspects and impacts of the environment
on the real estate development,
bringing them in accordance with
the needs of market, landscape
planners and managers responsible
for real estate development. It
offers knowledge on the real estate
development and management, as
well as the landscape planning and city
planning. Students of this curriculum
get jobs in companies that realize
investment projects in real estate,
consulting companies that offer
services in the real estate investment
projects realization, as well as in the
government administration working on
landscape planning and city planning.
This curriculum deals with the
real estate corporative management
and real estate maintenance. It
offers knowledge of the real estate
corporative finances and corporative
management, as well as the main
techniques in the sphere of technical
and investment maintenance of the
real estate. Students of this curriculum
get jobs in companies that have great
amount of the real estate that need
maintenance and that have to be
managed in optimal way, consulting
companies that offer services in the
sphere of the real estate corporative
management and companies that
deal in businesses of technical and
investment real estate maintenance.

SERBIAN MOUNTAINS
Mountains in Serbia owe their beauty and richness
to large deciduous and evergreen forests, meadows,
and pastures, their moderate height and ideal
conditions for resting, sports and recreation, both
in summer and winter. Many mountains in Serbia are
well-known climatic treatment centers, and some of
them have been declared national parks.

KOPAONIK
The highest mountain in Serbia,
Kopaonik, is a mountain massif
covered by thick coniferous and
deciduous forests, about 120 km
long and about 60 km wide. It rises
above the valleys of the rivers Lab,
Sitnica, Ibar, Josanica, Rasina and
Toplica. Its highest peak is Pančićev
Vrh (2017 m). Kopaonik is also the
largest and best known tourist and
ski center in Serbia. Owing to its
precious assets it has been declared
a Nationaln Park. This giant mountain
of immense beauty and unlimited
natural richness is a favorite holiday,
recreation and sports resort, which is
equally attractive in the summer or
in the winter. With almost 200 sunny
days and about 160 days with snow,
it is one of the most outstanding
ski centers. Skiing tracks are at an
altitude of between 1650 m and 2017
m. With its 60 km of primed Alpine
tracks and 20 km of Nordic tracks,
a network of 21 funiculars and ski
lifts and 4 children’s elevators, it
can host all categories of skiers.
The overall length of its ski lifts,
functioning as an integrated system,
is 17,722 m. Thanks to its excellent
tourist infrastructure, Kopaonik has
frequently been the venue of local
and international congresses.
ZLATIBOR
Mt. Zlatibor is a gently rolling
highland with endless pastures and
fragrant meadows. It covers the area
between the rivers Rzava, Djetinja,
Uvac and Mt. Tara. It is 230 km
away from Belgrade. This location
has been known as a climatic spa
due to its favorable environmental
conditions with a large number of
sunny days. Mt. Zlatibor has good
hotel facilities ranking it among the
best congress tourist destinations
in Serbia.
TARA
Tara National Park covers an area of
19.200 hectares and includes Mt. Tara
and the Mt. Zvezda and the canyon
of the river Drina. The presence of
a well preserved forest eco-system
makes Mt. Tara one of significant
environmental areas in Europe. More
than 1000 plant species have been
identified in the Tara area, as well as
35 forest and 9 meadow associations.
Mt. Tara is the original habitat of the
famous Pančić’s spruce.
DIVCIBARE
Divcibare is a locality on Mt. Maljen,
at an altitude of 980 m above sea level.
Due to its favorable climatic conditions
it has been declared a climatic resort.
It has a rich flora and fauna and an
abundance of streams which, together
with the favorable configuration of
the terrain, make Divcibare a pleasant
holiday resort at any time of the year.
