Acting Principal’s Message
Newsletter
Dear Students, Teachers and Parents,
We have finally come to the end of the 2012 – 2013 school year. It has
been a great 10th year for the school with successes on many fronts. Since
the YHKCC opened its doors to the students in 2003, our reputation as a
unique and outstanding DSS secondary school offering an international
style education has been cemented in the local community.
To
commemorate
a
decade of educating
students, the school
celebrated its 10th anniversary by organizing a series of activities with
stakeholders including parents, teachers, students and their friends.
The highlights included the International Fun Fair, the Fundraising
Walkathon, the 10th Anniversary Graduation Ceremony and Dedication
of the new Music Block, the visit by Mr. Eddie Ng, SBS, JP, Secretary for
Education, and the establishment of the YHKCC Alumni Association. All
of these celebratory activities are a testament to the dedication and
focus of students, the support and commitment of their families and the professionalism and passion of teachers.
The festivities culminated with the school musical, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. With a cast of more than 120
students and a backstage crew of over 50, the performers dazzled audiences on the evenings of 8th, 9th and 10th July.
The musical required a large cast, high levels of singing skills and excellent stage craft. Putting on a musical of this
magnitude certainly involved a lot of hard work – as well as a lot of fun – and the students made it such a great success.
YHKCC students are also thrilled to produce their first CD to celebrate the
10th Anniversary. The album features four well known worship songs with
fresh rearrangements by the School Band, two energetic percussion
pieces performed by the Beat Club, two beautiful vocal works by the Choir,
and two classically inspired pieces played by the Orchestra and String
Ensemble. The 10th Anniversary CD can be purchased from the General
Office. Please contact Ms. Marvis Wong, the Communications Officer, for
more details.

Acting Principal’s Message
The HKDSE results were released on 15th July, bringing good news for many
students. Of particular note is the fact that 4.7% of students attained level
5** in English Language. This is an amazing achievement!
The most outstanding individual results were
obtained by Chiu Wen Han and Isaak Manuel.
Chiu Wen Han attained Level 5 or above in
four subjects: Level 5* in English Language,
Level 5** in Mathematics (Compulsory Part
& Extended Part), Level 5* in Chemistry and Level 5 in Physics. Isaak Manuel obtained
Level 5 or above in three subjects: Level 5** in English Language, Level 5* and Level 5 in
Mathematics (Compulsory Part & Extended Part) and Level 5 in Physics.
We anticipate the level of students’ academic achievements continuing to climb in future
years.
It has also been an exhilarating year for the school’s basketball teams with fantastic
achievements in the Inter-school Basketball Marathon 2013. The girls’ team competed against 138 schools and finished
in the top four. The boys’ team competed against 248 schools in Hong Kong and finished in the top sixteen. We are
incredibly proud of the players and all that they have accomplished over the course of the year.
Today, the YHKCC is thriving thanks to the dedication of teachers, staff, students and alumni. None of these things would
have been possible were it not for key individuals who believed in the YHKCC from the start and devoted their time, efforts
and talents to making the hope of affordable international style education a reality. I make it a priority each day to
remember those who made this possible including the School Management Committee, the School Supervisor, Dr. Alice
Yuk, JP, Mr. Benjamin Lam, the former Principals, Mrs. Rosalind Chan, Dr. Nick Miller and Mr. Adrian Price, supportive
parents and the dedicated teachers and staff, and to honour all of them for their contributions to the YHKCC. As we
prepare to steward the school through the next decade, we again look to our students, alumni and supporters in the
community to be the heart of our development.
Finally, I wish you all a happy and refreshing summer vacation. See you all on Monday 2 nd September 2013.
Mr. Dion Chen
Acting Principal

Admissions
Admissions
The admission processes of Form 1 Admissions for the school year 2013 – 2014
were all smoothly carried out. Since the demographics of the Tung Chung area
have changed considerably over the past few years, the demand for places in the
school has consistently increased and now far exceeds the actual number of
places available. This year the school received approximately 350 applications,
but we can only admit 160 students into Form One, as stipulated by the
Education Bureau.
There will be 6 classes in Forms 1 – 4, with about 27 – 28 students in
each class. Of the 160 students admitted to Form 1, about 70% are nonlocal. About 15 students have been admitted into other forms and over
80% of them are non-local students. All new students registered at
designated timeslots on 11th and 12th July.
All school places for Forms 1 – 4 for the 2013 – 2014 academic year
have now been filled. To conclude, the school has once again been very
successful in attracting new students this year.


Graduation Ceremony
The school celebrated the 10th Anniversary Graduation Ceremony on 22 nd June. The Hon. Lam Woon Kwong, GBS,
JP, the Rt. Rev Bishop Louis Tsan-sang Tsui, Bishop of the Diocese of Eastern Kowloon, and Mr. David Wong,
President of the YMCA of Hong Kong officiated as the guests of honour.
Mr. Lam gave an impressive speech to the Form 6 and GCE A2 graduates. He quoted a great futurologist, Alvin
Toffler, pointing out the importance of the need to be able “to learn, to unlearn and to relearn” in this generation.
He also encouraged graduates with these words, “You have got to think about the big things while you are doing the
small things, so that all small things go in the right direction.”

Prize Giving Ceremony
The school year ended with a Prize Giving Ceremony on the evening of 11th July. More than 120 students and their
parents attended the ceremony in the school hall, where they received various awards, including subject prizes,
progress prizes and position prizes.
During the ceremony, students were congratulated for their fantastic academic achievements and encouraged with
a couple of quotes about excellence. Aristotle, the Greek philosopher said, “Excellence is never an accident. It is
always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many
alternatives – choice, not chance, determines your destiny.” More recently, Vince Lombardi, a famous football
coach said, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.”
After the Ceremony all the participants were treated to light refreshments on the newly built concourse at the back
of the school. Good food, a great view and a nice breeze capped off a great evening.

Academic Standards
One of the main foci of the school for the 2013 – 2014 academic year will be on further improving the academic
standards of YHKCC students. After a well deserved summer break, teachers will continue to focus on enhancing
the curriculum and developing creative teaching and learning strategies, with a view to achieving even better
academic results next year.

SGDS
SGDS
As the year draws to a close, the SGDS team is looking to the future and we are working hard to further and improve
develop systems that have already been established. We aim to continue to provide exceptional care for students, in
terms of their emotional and educational well-being, and look forward to tackling future challenges with dedication and
hard work.
The year finished with an air of celebration as we saw Form 6 and GCE A2 students graduate as mature and upright
citizens ready to face the new challenges of tertiary education. We also celebrated the contribution made by two
members of the SGDS team who are sadly departing the YHKCC to pursue new challenges. Mr. Chris Robershaw, Head of
Form 6 and GCE A2, leaves the school to run a church full-time and Mr. Martin Rigby, Head of Form 3, is moving to
Singapore to continue his teaching career. We would like to thank them for their commitment and hard work and wish
them well in their future endeavours.
However, the departure of such talented members of the team will not hinder progress as we welcome three new Heads of
Year. Ms. Cleo Wong, Mr. Joshua Tillott and Dr. Terrence Wang will be joining the team in September. They are all
experienced teachers who bring a range of fresh skills and talents to the SGDS team and they will serve students
diligently. We are also pleased to announce that Ms. Nicola Butler will step into the role of Deputy Head of SGDS in
September. She brings with her a wealth of talents and experience that made her such a great Head of Year.
We would like to thank all the parents for the constant support you have shown to the school. Your active support and
encouragement makes this amazing community much stronger.
Finally, we would like to wish all YHKCC students a well deserved holiday this summer. Thank you for all your hard work
and good behaviour over the past year. We can’t wait to see you again in September!
Happy Holidays!

Gift and Talented Education
Gifted and Talented Education
To cater students talented in writing and media communication, the gifted and talented education committee organized a
‘Creative Media Writing Workshop’ with the school’s creative media club in February to April. It was a great pleasure to
invite Ms. Jennifer Ngo to YHKCC to induce basic news-writing and reporting skills to our students. Ms Ngo is a
professional news reporter from the ‘South China Morning Post’. With her passion and depth understanding of social and
welfare issues, our students were explored to learn about ‘how to write an news article’, ‘ how to write a life story’, ‘reports
summarization’, ‘family interview’ and ‘following up an interview’.
After the workshop, most of our students practiced what they have learnt in the editing of our school magazine 2013. We
believe that the editors of the school magazine will implement their talents and fruitful experiences in this year’s school
magazine. It will be a great and amazing one.

Best SME ICT (Adoption) Bronze Award in Hong Kong ICT Awards 2013
(8th April)
We are pleased to announce that the school has won the Best SME ICT
(Adoption) Bronze Award in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2013 for the
implementation of a new online learning system, ‘Virtual Learning
Environment (VLE)’ to improve communication between parents, students
and teachers, and to provide parents with details about what their children
are learning in the school. YHKCC is the first DSS school in Hong Kong to
have been awarded this recognition.
The VLE System is a web-based system developed by the school and WestcomZivo Limited. The system is
designed to accelerate and streamline school administration and management operations, including class
schedule management, student performance and portfolio management, parent communication and the booking
of school facilities. It provides a centralized and common information platform for students, teachers, parents and
school administrators to access updated information and communicate daily classroom operations. It also
reduces administrative tasks and enhances effective channels of communication among all parties.
Dr. Alice Yuk, JP, School Supervisor, Mr. Dion Chen, Deputy Principal, and Mr. Allen Tang, IT Officer, attended the
Awards Presentation Ceremony and Dinner held on 8th April at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The Hon. C.Y. LEUNG, GBM, GBS, JP, the Chief Executive, The Hon. Gregory SO Kam-leung, GBS, JP, Secretary for
Commerce and Economic Development, and Mr. Daniel Lai, BBS, JP, Government Chief Information Officer were
the Guests of Honour.
Mr. Dion Chen said, “The YHKCC is honoured to be recognized for our dedication to improving communication
between different stakeholders of the school community and to providing parents with details of their children
such as academic results, attendance record, learning activities, timetable, assignments, rewards and sanctions,
etc. Parents can also be kept abreast of the latest school news, announcements and events via the VLE system.
This award reaffirms the YHKCC’s success in providing a flexible, effective and user-friendly platform that assists
the school in accommodating the dynamic changes in our multicultural education environment. Looking ahead,
the YHKCC will continue to improve relationships with different stakeholders of the school community.”
The Hong Kong ICT Awards 2013 comprises ten categories. There is one Grand Award in each category, including
Best Business Awards, Best Digital Entertainment, Best SME ICT Award, etc. In addition an ‘Award of the Year’ is
selected from the ten Grand Awards by the judging panel.
The Best SME ICT Award aims to encourage and recognize local ICT SME companies’ development of innovative
ICT solutions, and local SME end-user companies’ adoption of ICT solutions to enhance business efficiency and
productivity.

2nd Putonghua Speech Competition by demonstrating their competent Putonghua speaking skills
(27th April)
Speaking Putonghua may be relatively easy for most students in Hong Kong, but it is a big deal for the Non-Chinese
speaking (NCS) students who joined the 2nd Putonghua Speech Competition on 27th April.
Co-organized by the YHKCC and CACLER, Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong, six secondary schools
joined the 2nd Putonghua Speech Competition for NCS students. In addition to the YHKCC, Creative Secondary
School, HKWMA Chu Shek Lun Secondary School, St. Paul’s Convent School (Secondary Section), HKMA David Li
Kwok Po College, Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial College and St. Margaret’s Co-educational English Secondary and
Primary School gave their students an opportunity to apply their speaking skills in Putonghua.
The competition was divided into three categories: Solo Verse (Junior Forms), Solo Verse (Senior Forms) and Choral
Speaking.
Over 50 students lit up the stage by showcasing their talents and eloquent speaking skills. Guan Karen Jiaxi of St.
Paul’s Convent School (Secondary Section), TAM Chester Sek Yin of YHKCC and Buddhist Fat Ho Memorial College
were the champions in the Solo Verse (Junior Forms), Solo Verse (Senior Forms) and Choral Speaking categories
respectively.
“I was very proud of the students. The judging panel was most impressed with their competent language skills.
The competition is to enrich and showcase what the NCS students have learned in their Chinese lessons. This also
gives them an opportunity to share their learning experience with other students, as well as to promote racial
harmony within the school community.” said Mr. Kan Wan Ngai, Head of Elementary Chinese at the YHKCC.
36
School Events
To enable NCS students to learn Chinese language and to adapt to
the local community, the YHKCC has put a great deal of effort into
supporting their learning of the language. In addition to the tailormade foundation curriculum and a Summer Bridging Course to all
new Form 1 students, school-based teaching materials have also
been developed for different levels of the Elementary Chinese
curriculum. Chinese and Hong Kong culture have been integrated
into the Chinese Language curriculum.
A Chinese culture and language learning environment is
promoted within the school campus.
To provide more
opportunities to practice their language skills, NCS students
are encouraged to join out-of-class and interschool activities,
including the Speech Festival. Students’ interest in learning
Chinese and their sense of achievement is greatly enhanced
through these activities. NCS students are also provided with
assistance to adapt to the local community by joining outside
school activities arranged by some local organizations which
aim to help them explore and further understand local culture.
Dr. Alice Yuk, JP, School Supervisor of the YHKCC, said, “It is also
widely known that Putonghua is an increasingly important world
language. Putonghua proficiency is seen as a prerequisite for our
children as future global citizens. By integrating the study of
Chinese culture into the curriculum, our students are cultivated to
understand of and respect of the local community and foster a
global perspective in our multi-cultural learning environment.”

members also came to the school to welcome and accompany Mr. Ng during the tour of the school.
Mr. Wong warmly welcomed and thanked Mr. Ng for his visit. Dr. Alice Yuk, JP, School Supervisor, impressed upon
the guests the vision and mission of the YHKCC. She further pointed out that it is the “dream” of the YMCA of Hong
Kong to establish a primary school in the area to provide more primary school places allowing a through-train
education for children in Hong Kong, especially for those living on Lantau Island and in nearby communities. She
also expressed her sincere gratitude to all SMC members and especially Mr. Benjamin Lam for his dedication in the
construction of the new Music Block. The Acting Principal, Mr. Dion Chen, spoke briefly introducing the 10 year
history and background, curriculum, international student profile and other characteristics of the school.
The guests then toured the school and visited the newly built Music Block and
Promenade overlooking the tranquil and picturesque environment of the YHKCC
campus. Mr. Ng then met with teachers and students. Mr. Ng expressed great interest
in students’ achievements in different areas of their school lives, such as in sport,
community service, the arts, etc. He was particularly impressed by students’ all round
attainment.
The afternoon ended with a group of cheerleaders performing stunts and then
students in the Beat Club escorted Mr. Ng and other guests to the school gate,
accompanied by exciting drum music.
It is hoped that before the 20th anniversary, the YMCA of Hong Kong and the YHKCC
can achieve its mission to provide a quality, international style education to both local and expatriate
communities, as well as a through-train education for Hong Kong families.

Community Service Club Activity : After-school English Learning Programme
The Community Service Club launched a programme called the "After
School English Learning" with the aim of enriching the English ability of
primary school students in Tung Chung. YHKCC students became their
English tutors.
The primary school students enjoyed the programme very much as
they not visited the spacious and green campus of the YHKCC, but they
also learned a lot of practical English through participation in different
activities, including experiments, playing music and beating drums and
sports such as softball, etc.
The experience of teaching these primary school students was also valuable for YHKCC students as they had an
opportunity to play an active role in serving and caring for the community and building lasting relationships with the
visitors.

10th Anniversary Graduation cum Dedication of the New Music Block
(22nd June)
The school’s 10th Anniversary Graduation Ceremony for Forms 6 and GCE
A2 students was held on 22nd June. The Right Rev. Louis Tsan-sang Tsui,
Bishop of the Diocese of Eastern Kowloon, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui,
the Honourable Mr. Lam Woon Kwong, GBS JP, Convenor of the Executive
Council, HKSAR and Mr. David Wong, President of YMCA of Hong Kong
were the Guests of Honour. The platform party consisted of Mr. Doug
Oxley, Chairman of the School Management Committee, Dr. Alice Yuk, JP,
Supervisor of the School Management Committee, Mr. Edwin Ho,
Chairman of the Alumni Association of the school, Mr. Dion Chen, Acting
Principal, and SMC members Dr. Aldrin Leung, Mrs. Sheila Chuang, Mr.
Ben Lam and Ms. Julia Ong.
After Mr. Doug Oxley said a prayer thanking the Lord for all His provision and blessings, Dr. Yuk, JP welcomed and
introduced the Guests of Honour. The Acting Principal, Mr. Dion Chen, shared the school scripture with the
graduates, encouraging them to put their trust in God and live their lives in full. He also ended his speech with a
scripture verse emphasizing that the school has tried to teach and lead graduates to live a life that is right, pure and
beautiful. This scripture says, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not
turn from it,” (Proverbs 22:6).
The Hon. Mr. Lam Woon Kwong, GBS, JP, gave a speech and presented certificates and awards to graduates. His
speech was an inspiration not only for the graduates, but also to teachers and the audience.
This joyful event was also celebrated with musical performances, including a performance by the praise band, the
choir, the orchestra ensemble, and a team of students who played the drums and led the guests out of the hall.
After the Graduation Ceremony, guests, teachers, parents and students were escorted to the new Music Block.
During the Dedication Ceremony a plaque was unveiled on the wall of the Music Block to signify that this building and
Promenade were built for the glory of God. We pray that His blessings will flow through all use and enjoy these
facilities.
The ceremonies ended on a joyous note with guests, parents, teachers and students taking full advantage of great
refreshments.
Besides the graduates and teachers, the ceremonies were attended by more than 400 parents and friends.

YHKCC students wowed the audiences with the musical, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”
(8th, 9th & 10th July)
The applause at the end of Act 5 for the YMCA of Hong Kong Christian
College (YHKCC) 10th Anniversary Musical “A Midsummer Night’s
Dream” was no figment of the imagination, nor were the accolades
from the audience after the final performance on the evening of 10th
July.
More than 120 cast members from the YHKCC took to the stage and
wowed the audience in the school hall by presenting a musical
adaptation of one of William Shakespeare’s best known comedies, “A
Midsummer Night’s Dream”. It is an unforgettable tale of love, magic,
and mischief set in a mystical forest at the time when Theseus, the Duke of Athens, is preparing for his marriage to
Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Strange adventures happen to four young Athenian lovers and a group of amateur
actors who are manipulated by the magical beings that inhabit the forest.
“I am very blessed and fortunate in Tung Chung community to have a
secondary school performance of this superb quality. I am also very
impressed that our young kids can put on such a professional show. It is
fantastic!” said Dr. Alice Yuk, JP, School Supervisor, who watched the
show on 10th July.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, with a cast of more than 120 and a
backstage crew of over 50, dazzled the audiences with four spectacular
performances: three on the evenings of 8th, 9th and 10th July and another
which was especially for primary and secondary school students on the afternoon of 8th July.
The musical was directed and choreographed by Dr. Maureen Coulter, the teacher of Drama and English Literature.
She said, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is one of Shakespeare’s
most frequently performed plays, being especially popular with
schools and amateur drama groups. The show requires a big cast
and a high level of singing skills and excellent stage craft. It has been
hard work – as well as a great deal of fun – and we have made it.”

The producer of the musical and Deputy Head of English, Miss Jessica Choi claimed, “This was an exhilarating
experience for students and staff involved. We are tremendously proud of our dedicated cast and technical student
crew for pulling off such breathtaking performances within such a limited amount of time.”
“We are really enjoying performing on the stage and we become a family, more so than ever,” said Christopher
Ollsen, a Form 3 student who was cast as Lysander in the musical.
Mr. Dion Chen, Acting Principal of the YHKCC, said, “This year is the school’s 10th Anniversary, and the 7th year that
we have staged a musical ourselves. The musicals that we performed before were small scale in production. The
cast has grown and now we have more than 120 students in this “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on stage, and many
more are involved in singing, backstage support, costumes, lighting and sound, directing, etc.”
Mr. Chen continued to express his thanks, “I would like to express my gratitude to you for your presence with us, and
to the students, teachers, parents and office staff who have worked so hard to deliver this high-quality performance.
This is a complex and demanding show both from the musical and staging points of view. We believe that the
musical is a great success, and we see our school as being on the road to excellence, and trust that our version of “A
Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be another milestone on our journey to success. This is a culture that YHKCC is
building for these ten years – a success culture. Once our students experience success in one area, such as having
a great experience in a musical, they will be able to translate and transfer that to other areas, including their
academic work and life skills.”
