“My inspiration for this piece came during a hot summer afternoon on my in-lawʼs back patio. The sun was so powerful
that day, and as I sat sipping iced tea, I noticed a small outdoor aquarium filled with goldfish swimming about. It was
something I had never noticed before, but once I saw it, I
couldnʼt take my eyes off of it. I loved how the light danced
through the water as it rippled from swimming fish. Later that
day, I began this drawing, recreating the experience I shared
with the goldfish that sunny afternoon.”

“After graduating from The Ohio State University, I was offered a teaching position
an hour away from the city of Columbus in a small town called Mount Vernon. Soon
after I began teaching at the Columbus College of Art & Design and would travel
in the evenings back to the city of Columbus, the town I considered home. One
evening while driving to class and longing to be back in the city I loved, I noticed
how beautiful the sky looked, with the city so far in the distance. It was a moment
for me I will never forget, almost as if the city was trying to tell me---soon you will
be back home.”

This may look like a simple card game at first glance, but the there is a deeper meaning,
revealed in the artist comment below, signed (glass frame).
“The inner circle has symbols showing my ideas about
personal balance. The deep blue and white in the flower
means there is both a trush and a deeper truth; almost a
feeling. The flower stands for the variety in life. The heart
symbolizes my belief that oneʼs heart will lead one in the
right direction.
The outer circle represents balance as a member of the
world community. I chose the four aces because they
symbolize the four elements; earth, wind, water, and fire.
The dark blue stands for truth and peace, while the chain
represents unity.
My thinking was inspired by Navajo ideas of Hozho (life
in balance). My visual inspiration was found on a rug by
Navajo artist, Noel Bennett. The rug has blocky geomeric
designs and lots of symbols. When trading with white
buyers increased, the Navajo were influenced to add figures to their traditional geometric shapes.”

State Fair Exhibition as well as the 2006 Ohio Online

Big Scenery

This piece was created by the second grade students of Wyandot during the 2004-2005 school year. Families
and students took photographs, and the class voted on which ones to include in the mural. The photographs
vary in subject matter. One includes a pieces of debris from the World Trade Center. Another includes a photograph of a tree that was painted in memory of a Dublin student who died in an airplane accident. The stories
behind the photographs tell about the Dublin community. The students worked with muralist Amy Yaich on
extending ideas from the photographs into their mural. The overall mural contains two landscapes, and shows
both day time and evening sky. Students discussed the beautiful landscapes that still exist in Dublin due to
active preservation of green space, and they wanted to capture this admiration of the seasons and nature in
this mural.

dark, but colorful light of the day. This painting was shown at the Columbus Museum of Art.

Students had the unique opportunity to work with “Found-Object” artist, Michelle Stitzlein. Students learned
about recycled art from around the world and spent months collecting plastic bottlecaps for this school-wide
project. Students got a chance to paint and use cordless drills and screws to attach the caps into the wood.

I Spy Inspiration submitted by: Pinney Elementary Students
Every fifth grade student at Eli Pinney Elementary School participated in this beautiful and whimsical piece of
art. Inspired by the “I Spy” adventures, the students created their own unique version of this timeless game.
This work of art was created using positive and negative shapes as symbols, which entices its audience to
engage in the art much like a scavenger hunt. Look carefully for the cat, Ohio State block O, handprint, and
shamrock to name just a few. A beautiful collage of shapes and symbols make this collaborative piece of art
a perfect addition to your home or office.
