In May this year Chamber Training
acquired a former commercial
hairdressing unit that had been
empty for a year and a half in the
town centre of Hull to “re-house” 41
existing hairdressing learners. The
premises in Jameson Street
became ‘Salon Apprentice’ in a
perfect location for both learners
and passing trade. The property
was ideal, with its existing salon
fittings on the first floor and ample
space on the second floor that was
soon to become an IT suite and
training classroom.

Salon Apprentice .. continued
This summer has shown a
massive response to both
learner and employer needs,
starting another 40
hairdressing Apprentices on
programme since July. We
are working with a range of
salons across the city
including the East villages as
far out as Patrington and
Hornsea. The salons have
high expectations and we aim
to meet these.
Chamber Training have been
delivering Apprenticeships for
over 17 years, and all of its
staff are committed and
passionate about delivering
high quality training. Although
hairdressing is a new
vocational area for us we
intend to deliver to the same
high standards and gain the
respect and trust from salon
owners as we have from
employers in all other
sectors.
After months of waiting we
finally received permission to
have the new shop front
fitted and work was
underway. It was now
November and time to
organise our long awaited
‘Official Open Event’ when we
could invite all of those
employers who had already
put their trust in us to recruit
new apprentices and deliver
the high standards of training
we promised.
We are very proud of what we
have achieved and wanted to
offering a tour of our training
facilities and an evening to
remember.
The evening was a huge
success and is only the
beginning for
‘Salon Apprentice’
The tutors and learners
started working on a theme
for the evening and decided
upon a ‘Red Carpet and
Movies’ event. The learners
worked really hard on
recreating iconic images and
created some stunning
hairstyles for the showcase
using their own models.
Most of the learners provided
their own outfits or designed
outfits around their movie
theme that included such as:
Disney, Mad Max and Pirates
of the Caribbean.
The evening arrived and the
scene was set, with red
carpet, music, drinks and
canapes. The learners put on
the most spectacular show
displaying all of their hard
work and creativity to
employers, staff and
members of the Chamber of
Commerce board.

NEWS UPDATES ..
Apprenticeship Levy
Summer Budget July 2015, The Chancellor Announced ..
“The government will introduce a levy on large UK employers to
fund the new apprenticeships. This approach will reverse the
long-term trend of employer underinvestment in training, which
has seen the number of employees who attend a training
course away from the workplace fall from 141,000 in 1995 to
18,000 in 2014.”
The levy which is likely to come into force in 2017/18,
underpins the government’s apprenticeship reform programme.
The government is committed to delivering 3 million
apprenticeships in this Parliament—a 35% increase over the 2.0
million apprenticeships delivered in the last Parliament. The levy
is intended to provide funding and incentives to help deliver this
commitment.
“The levy will support all post 16 apprenticeships in England. It
will provide funding that each employer can use to meet their
individual needs. The funding will be directly controlled by
employers via the digital apprenticeships voucher, and firms
that are committed to training will be able to get back more
than they put in. There will be formal engagement with business
on the implementation of the levy, which will also consider the
interaction with each existing sector levy boards, and further
details will be set out at the Spending Review”
Chamber Training will keep employers updated with further
news on the levy and how it will affect large employers.
Updating Apprentice
Personal Details ..
We would like to remind and
encourage employers to inform us
of any changes to their apprentice
personal details, such as change
of address, emergency contact or
even sudden medical changes.
We have a duty of care to our
apprentices and do review their
details during visits however,
changes can occur intermittently
and can be sometimes crucial to
the well-being of the apprentice.
NEW Changes to Employer
Training Agreement—
Penalty Fees
Please note where candidates do
not attend for training / exams
and have not informed us on nonattendance no less than 24hrs
before the training is due to
commence, a charge of £25.00
will be made to the employer to
cover examination fees and
administration.
New GCSE Reform
GCSEs from 2015
Earlier this year the Department for Education (DfE) and Ofqual
announced consultations on proposed changes to the content
and structure of GCSEs taken by students in England. The new
GCSEs would be taught in schools from September 2015 and
the first exams would take place in Summer 2017.
Key structural features of the new GCSEs confirmed by Ofqual
include: A new grading scale that uses the numbers 1-9 to
identify levels of performance (with 9 being the top level). Where
performance is below the minimum required to pass a GCSE,
students will get a U.
Ofsted Questionnaire
We were recently asked by Ofsted to request employers and learners to take part in their on-line survey.
If you have not already done the survey would you please take a couple of minutes to complete
by following the links:

Refrigeration Air-conditioning Apprentice
Goes Through to National ACR Awards
The 6th ACR Trainee of the Year Awards was held on
10th December 2015 at The Belfry, near Sutton
Coldfield.
The ACR Trainee of the Year Awards is held to help the
air conditioning and refrigeration sector appeal to many
young people by highlighting a small but significant
number of young and exceptional design, installation
and maintenance engineers.
The awards are designed not only to encourage young
trainees and apprentices. They also support the
specialist training colleges and companies that are so
vital to providing a solid set of skills and knowledge to
the trainees.
George Stevenson pictured far right
receiving his award.
This year one of Chamber Training’s Level 2 apprentices
George Stevenson employed by Industrial Refrigeration
Services Ltd (IRS) in Hull, was one of the selected
apprentices put forward for the award by his tutor Paul
Singh (Chillair Training Academy) and supported by his
employer. George was one of the successful entrants to
make it through to the finals.
The awards had seventeen entrants from colleges and
training companies in the industry. The judges whittled
the entrants down to one winner, two highly commended
winners and three finalists. George was one of the three
finalists the judges recommended as strong entrants for
the ‘Finalist Award’. “Congratulations George on your
well earned achievement”.

HEAD OF TRAINING ‘Wraps Up’ 2015
“I am not normally a fan of New Year’s Eve but this year I will definitely be
raising a glass (or two!)”.
I should have known 2015 would be a challenging year when Ofsted appeared at our
door the first week of January and the year has continued to put us through our
professional paces ever since, but I am so proud of what we have achieved.
Above all it has also shown me just how strong we are. Having worked here for 14 years, I
didn’t think there was much more to learn about my staff but they continue to surprise
me and give a level of loyalty money could never buy – I really do have the best team
anyone could wish for and I hope you as our employers agree.
So much has happened this year I struggle to remember it all but one thing is for certain,
I never imagined us to be delivering Hairdressing! I have to confess though I have
thoroughly enjoyed setting our new training salon up and am so grateful to the local salon
community for giving us the opportunity.
At the time I don’t think we really considered the risk of it not being a success (which I
probably shouldn’t admit!) but we were very focussed on providing a solution to the
situation and it is so rewarding to see the finished product and how happy our
Hairdressing learners are in their new training environment.
We have lots of exciting ideas for ‘Salon Apprentice’ in 2016 so keep your
eyes and ears open!!!
“So, another year gone and a ‘huge’ thank you to all our employers and
learners for your continued support. I hope you all have a wonderful
Christmas and a well-earned break and we look forward to doing it all again
with you in 2016!”
Rachel Mendham
