Autumn at The Haymarket arrives with two nailbiting thrillers, Design for Murder in September and Double Death in October, as well as the brilliant comedy Shady Business. Don’t miss the poignant First
World War drama Not About Heroes, the hilarious japes of Three Men in a Boat, or the extraordinary Dylan Thomas: Return Journey. For families,
there’s T he Gruffalo, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, and at Christmas The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus to enjoy.
At The Anvil, there’s music from Mnozil Brass, Kate Rusby, and John
Mayall, comedy from Alan Davies, Omid Djalili and Al Murray, and
orchestras including the St Petersburg Philharmonic. Three concerts
feature the music of Philip Glass, including the man himself on 12 November, and don’t miss Ladysmith Black Mambazo and dancers in the stunning ‘Zulu ballet’ Inala.
Anvil Arts is very pleased to be a partner in Purple Flag Week from 27 September, which celebrates Basingstoke as a safe and welcoming town centre at night. Look out for events around the town.

Starting out as an actor at the RSC,
Ruby Wax went on to write and
perform in her own television shows
and script edited the entire series of
Absolutely Fabulous. More recently
she has also become a mental
health campaigner and gained a
Masters degree in Mindfulnessbased Cognitive Therapy from
Oxford University.
This show is based on her critically
acclaimed book Sane New World
which shows us how to rewire our
thinking to find calm in a frenetic
world and how to become the
master, not the slave, of our own
minds. This show is your passport
to saner living. She might not be
sane herself but she does a pretty
good imitation.

of Bruckner’s seventh symphony in

This septet from Vienna is probably the strangest brass ensemble ever. With

We’re not scared.
A family go on an expedition of a lifetime – running down the
grassy bank, wading through the cold river, squelching over the
oozy mud, stumbling into the dark forest, then peering into a
cave… what will they find?
Liadov’s colourful miniatures are like musical Fabergé eggs. His talents
are shown to the full in the ‘fantastic
scherzo’ Kikimora, which vividly
depicts a malevolent character from
Russian folklore. Prokofiev’s magical
violin concerto opens dreamily and
continues with an acrobatic scherzo
movement. The finale presents its
theme in various guises before the
music evaporates in a haze of trills.
Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony has
probably been written about more
than the other five combined, but
whatever its significance to the
composer, its overwhelming emotional
impact is not in doubt. This orchestra
gave the piece its premiere, conducted
by the composer nine days before his
death, and it retains a special place in
its repertoire.
Little Angel Theatre brings Michael Rosen’s thrilling and funny
adventure to life in this entrancing puppetry production directed

Basingstoke Youth Theatre
Central Studio, Anvil Arts and Proteus Theatre Company are working together to
transform theatre for young people in Basingstoke. With opportunities to perform on at
least two stages in the town including The Haymarket and Central Studio, you will work
with professional artists in the performing arts industry. This is an opportunity like no
other to make a lasting impact on all young people who choose to be involved. If you are
aged between 14 and 21, and are interested in performing on the stage, you are eligible to
join this inclusive group. Weekly rehearsals run by Proteus Theatre Company professionals
will take place at Central Studio on the campus of Queen Mary’s College. Performances
take place in February and July and include a mix of plays and musical theatre.
If you are aged between 8 and 13, don’t feel you are missing out as you can join the
Central Studio and Proteus Young People’s Theatre who will also put on two shows a
year in Central Studio, with automatic graduation into the Basingstoke Youth Theatre.
Ideal for complete beginners and budding Oscar winners alike.
If you are not interested in acting, but have a passion for Technical Theatre, then you can
join the Young Technicians if you are aged 16 – 21, learning all the crafts to put on a show!

General information
The Anvil and The Haymarket foyers are open one hour before all
performances. Bars at both The Anvil
and The Haymarket are located in the
stalls and circle foyers. The bars open
pre-show and during the interval,
serving a selection of beer, wine,
spirits, soft drinks, hot beverages,
confectionery and ice cream. For most
performances interval drinks can be
pre-ordered at the bar and may be
taken into the auditorium in plastic
glasses. To respect fellow audience
members and performers, re-admission
to the auditorium with drinks once the
performance has started will not be
permitted. We operate a Challenge 21
Policy in our venues.
After the auditorium doors have
closed, latecomers may only be
admitted at a suitable point in the
performance, at the discretion of the
Duty Manager. Anvil Arts reserves the right to refuse admission and to request any ticket holder to leave the building.
Sound levels are monitored in
