Scholarship update
Dr. and Mrs. Robert Winecoff Scholarship Update
C HURCH L IFE
The following article was submitted from the Scholarship Team
The Winecoff First Baptist Church Scholarship has grown from 60% to 75% of its goal,
largely due to recent gifts from the Encouragers Sunday School Class. The Scholarship
Team is greatly appreciative of these gifts. These gifts honor Bob and Virginia now and will
provide valuable aid to our students approaching their college years soon. If you would like
to make a contribution to the Winecoff Scholarship Fund or any of our other Scholarship
Funds, you may do so by simply making a check out to a designated fund and placing it in
one of our special envelopes found in the front of the pews. Again, thank you.

Dear Church Family,
Thank you for your cards, calls, visits, and food. Most of all thank you for your prayers.
We serve an awesome God who has heard and answered our prayers. Today I received the
news that my cancerous nodes are gone. Praise Him! Praise Him!
Love in Christ, Madge Haynes
Church Family,
Jill and I want to thank all for the prayers, cards, phone calls, and love we have received
both physically and spiritually. It is a true blessing to have a church family like ours. I’m in the
process of seeing if I qualify for a lung transplant. We ask for your continued prayers as we
venture thru this time. God bless each and every one of you.
Reid & Jill Morton
Dear Friends,
Thank you for all the excellent food. Thank you for your love and prayers—keep them
up. Bob was one great guy and we sure do miss him. Thanks again.

Advent Songs
C HURCH L IFE
The season of Advent is upon us. Advent is from the Latin word for coming, and it refers
to the coming of the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One to us. In these four Sundays
before Christmas, we take a few moments to hear the words of the prophets and to remember
the travails we endure, but endure with hope, as we wait for the Lord.
We remember the children of Israel as they cried, as the Psalmist cried, “How long wilt
Thou forget me, O LORD, for ever? How long wilt Thou hide Thy face from me? How long
shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long shall mine enemy
be exalted over me?” (Psalm 13:1-2) They cry and cry for deliverance; yet, the Lord’s coming
seems so far away.
“How long, O LORD?” becomes our questions as well. You and I cry and cry for the Lord
as we, or those we hold dear, suffer the pains of life. We come to this joyous season, but we
realize it is not joyous for many. Some have suffered loss, some have suffered financial
setbacks, some are suffering with addictions and others are suffering loneliness and
isolation. Indeed, added to this list, is the reality of fear: fear for our safety, fear for our
children, and fear for our nation. How long, O LORD? How long shall I have sorrow in my
heart daily?
This all may sound rather dreary to you. Aren’t we supposed to be happy? It’s Christmas
you know. However, to smile blithely while covering our deep hurts is to deny the very
power of Advent and Christmas. The truth that the prophets proclaim to us is that our world
is full of suffering; but, the ultimate truth in the world is that the LORD is the Great Shepherd
and we are the sheep of his flock. Moreover, this Shepherd never abandons His flock, and He
loves them to the end.
Thus, we come to church in Advent and remember a world that is full of hatred, suffering,
pain, and anguish, and we come and do a revolutionary thing: we sing. We sing songs of hope
and peace and joy and love to remind us of the love of God revealed through a child in a
manger.
My favorite song in Advent comes from Isaiah 40, our Old Testament reading for
December 11. Hear the words of a few of the verses of that powerful passage that preaches
comfort to a hurting people. “Comfort, comfort ye my people, saith your God. 2 Speak ye
comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity
is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD'S hand double for all her sins. 3 The voice of
him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert
a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be
made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: 5 And the glory
of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD
hath spoken it.” And then 40:11, “[the LORD] shall feed his flock like a shepherd: He shall
gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are
with young.”
Let us be revolutionaries in a hurting world. Let us come in this Advent season and sing of
the Great Shepherd and the comfort to be found in our Lord. “Comfort, Comfort, ye my
people, saith your God.” Indeed, thanks be to God.
Grace and peace, Kendell Cameron

Children to see Chronicles of Narnia Movie
The children in grades K-5 will go to the
theater at Franklin Square to see the new
Chronicles of Narnia movie on Sunday Dec. 19.
The Chronicles of Narnia movies are based on
the works of CS Lewis, a Christian author. The
characters and situations in the Narnia movies
represent Christian figures and themes—
something the children will discuss before and
after the movie.
All children K-5 are invited to attend. Ticket price will be covered for children,
but kids will need to bring money to buy snacks. Adults must cover own price.
Please notify Jeff Spargo by Wednesday, December 15 if your child will attend.
Youth are invited to our Christmas Progressive Dinner on
December 12 at 5:00 p.m. We will meet at the church and then
go for appetizers. We will then return to the church for a special
dinner in the fellowship hall followed by a candlelight
communion service specially for you! Finally, we will go to the
Cameron’s house for dessert and gifts.
Youth should bring $5 to offset the cost of the food and bring
a small inexpensive gift to be traded. Note: it’s OK to bring a
funny gift, but it needs to be something Kendell would approve!
If you’re not sure, call him!!
