Dear Crusaders,
God has placed in our hands a very precious gift, the gift of self. Most of us spend
our lives looking for love, peace and joy only to realize that “we hold that treasure
in earthen vessels” (2 Cor. 4,7). The beauty of the love of God lives within us, and
we must not hide that light, but let it shine. We are the beloved children of God,
vested in His Spirit; therefore, we are the presence of Christ on earth. What can be
greater than that?
After my first year at MDCHS, I look at the miracles the Lord has done for us. They
are all around us! I am blessed to minister with a team of committed educators.
I have witnessed how each one of them strives day in and day out to guide our
students so that they can become spiritually mature, academically challenged, and
physically developed individuals. You are one of my miracles as well! I thank God
every day for every one of you, who continually support and strengthen our vision.
It is through you that we move forward in the task of Catholic education that the
Church has entrusted to us. What a noble mission!
As we bring the Crusader Connection to you, we want you to experience a little
piece of the gift of God within our Mater Dei Catholic High School community.
There is so much to share! Each one of us plays such an important role in the
kaleidoscope of gifts that we have received. We are who we are, and we do what we
do, because of the love of God present in the talents that each one of us brings to
our beloved Marian/Mater Dei.
Finally, we commend to God all our loved ones who have been called to His
presence during the 2013-2014 school year. The Lord, in his infinite mercy, places
people in our path to be our companions on the journey. These special people
shape who we are and what we become, thus we are living witnesses of their lives.
In this issue of the Crusader Connection we want to honor the gift of Mr. Samuel
L. Skaggs, Leo Henderson, Maria De La Parra, and Reyna Genel. They are part of
our Mater Dei family and the joy they shared with us will always echo in the halls
of our campus.
We place our accomplishments, hopes and dreams in the hands of Mary, our
Mother and patroness. May God grant us, through her intercession, the grace to
open our hearts to recognize that the plan He has in mind for us is good, very good!
You are in my prayers,

Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta Competition
Mater Dei faculty expertise and science advocacy is demonstrated every spring semester at the
Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta sponsored by Mr. Oakman and Mr. Heineman. The regatta calls
for knowledge of buoyancy, materials science, creativity and boat navigation skills by student
teams. The challenge: using only cardboard and tape, build a boat that can float, hold a student
passenger, and using a paddle, travel fast and in a straight line across the pool. Traditionally only
students from the physics class participated. In Spring 2013, an Academy of Science sophomore
team competed against the upper class physics students.
On May 2013, 100 spectators gathered at the MDCHS pool to witness the regatta. Students
presented their boats for inspection. Many boats did not pass, resulting in lots of wet cardboard
and students! Once all floating boats had a passenger, the race was on. The boat with the fastest
time wins. The Spring 2013 race was a complete upset. Science Academy sophomores clocked
the fastest time, thus beating all boats from the physics classes! Thanks to Mr. Oakman and Mr.
Heineman for creating an event that makes science fun, challenging and engaging.
Congratulations to the 2013-2014 ASB Representatives!
Annually, our student body elects their student representatives to the Associated Student Body (ASB). The ASB represents the interests
and goals of the entire Mater Dei Catholic High School Student Body. They create a memorable experience for all students on campus and
promote Crusader unity and spirit. This dedicated and active leadership group supports campus clubs and coordinates many school-wide
events such as Homecoming, Spirit Week, Prom, Winter/Spring Dances, Sports and Spirit Rallies, Cultural Events, Annual Fashion Show,
Lunch Activities, Free Dress Days, Candy Grams, and more. We look forward to the exciting 2013-14 school year our ASB has planned for us.

CRUSADER CONNECTION - FALL 2013
Mater Dei hosted its 5th Annual Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Night in the
Kassebaum Theater on May 2, 2013. VAPA Night is a student run event that is the
culmination of the hard work of our creative Crusaders. Student performances
included the Steel Drum Band, a spoken word performance, musical renditions of
various tracks, and performances by the Mater Dei Dance Team.
After the performances, all attendees processed back into the lobby which had
been transformed into an art gallery, to view student projects from Art, Ceramics
and Graphic Design courses. VAPA Night has expanded each year and has become
one of our most well attended events. Events such as VAPA Night have helped to
create a deep and meaningful appreciation for the arts.

CRUSADER CONNECTION - FALL 2013
Faculty Spotlight
Ms. Sherry Kelleher
How long have you been working here
at Marian/Mater Dei?
I’m terrible at dates, but I know I’ve done 16
yearbooks, one for every year I’ve been here.
Where did you work before Marian?
I worked mostly as a substitute teacher. I was
an Army wife for 20 years and it was both a
privilege and a pleasure. I got to raise my three
children in the best of worlds, living all over
the place yet always in the Army community.
Back in the late ‘70’s, I worked at University
High School with Estelle Kassebaum. That
was when I first knew her. Then after my
husband retired from the Army and we
moved back to San Diego, Estelle hired me at
Marian. Thank you, Estelle!
What keeps you motivated to begin
another year each September?
First, my students. They are why I teach. They
give me my energy. They give me my passion.
Then there’s the subject matter. How cool is it
to get kids excited about ancient Greece (The
Illiad and The Odyssey), Shakespeare, poetry,
great novels like To Kill a Mockingbird and
all the social issues that arise from it. I can’t
think of anything more fun than this. And I
get to keep learning too. It’s fabulous!
Your proudest achievement as a teacher?
Some of my most satisfying achievements
have been quiet ones where I realized I
had made a difference or connection with a
student. Right now, I have to say I am proud
of Greek Week. It started out as a class
activity and now it’s school-wide. I am so
happy that all our Crusaders can celebrate the
influence of the Greeks in a way that is fun
and educational. It’s also a way of embracing
our freshman who host the events. They have
told me after being a sheep in front of the
whole school (the chorus of The Trojan War
in Ten Minutes) nothing daunts them.
Your greatest surprise as a teacher?
I had a hard time at the beginning. You have
to be able to discipline before you can do
anything else. And I had trouble with that.
Once you can discipline, you don’t have to.
MATER DEI CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
Left to Right: Husband Mike, daughter Bryn and her fiancé Ray, Sherry, son
Danny and his wife Casey, holding their pet Cotton, and daughter Laura and
her boyfriend Aaron.
Do you supervise any clubs?
I have New Ecology, which is a work in
progress. Getting kids to pick up after
themselves is a Sisyphean task. I’d also like
them know that they can be the change they
want to see in the world. I also advise the
school literary magazine. Together with Ms.
Lillian Escobar-Haskins, and the Artists and
Writers Guild we turned out a pretty nice
looking edition of The Quill. Next year is
going to be even better.
This isn’t a school sponsored activity but
it does involve the students. Ms. Rebecca
Brown and I took a group of students to
England in 2011. She was the primary. Last
summer my husband Mike and I took our
own group of 13 students to Spain, Morocco
and Gibraltar. We’re hooked now, and in
2015 we are planning another trip with our
premier trip planner, Mr. Joseph Brunner.
This is called hands-on learning and its fun!
In your opinion, what makes Mater Dei
different than other schools?
There are three major components of a
school: parents, teachers and students.
Our parents are special because they are
investing so much to send their children
here. Our parents care. Many teachers can’t
say that about parents.
Most of our teachers want to teach in a
Catholic environment. I have taught in
public schools and there’s no freedom there
to say anything religious. Mater Dei feels
like being home. We are not perfect and
we’ve got our problems but it’s all in a faith
based community. It’s really unimaginable to
picture another kind of environment.
How do you like the Mater Dei campus?
I come in each day and view Mount San Miguel
and the Otay Mountains, often through an
early morning mist and I think, “this is one of
the most beautiful places in the world!” Lima
0708 is my home away from home.
Advice for graduating seniors?
Pay attention to the ESLR goals. They are
more important than you think. And after
you make it, come back and give to MDCHS.
Describe the Crusader culture.
There is one word we have used more than
any other, at least in the Yearbook. It’s
FAMILY. Our theme for the 2013 book was
There’s no place like home. We meant it. This
is a family school. Our kids feel like they are
home. How special is that?
Is there one student that stands out
throughout your teaching career?
There are so many kids that are special in
different ways. Sometimes the really quiet
ones stand out as much as the bold ones.
But there is one special group, my yearbook
editors. We go through a lot together and
spend several years working together. They
know who they are and they know they
are precious to me. I will see them at their
weddings and I will meet their children.
What do you like most about working in
a Catholic School?
I like to be where God can
keep his eye on me.
Finally, we have the kids. They are
the cutest kids in the world. Some
of them take advantage of every
possible opportunity but others
could try harder. That’s where
we come in again as teachers.
Although, it has to be a cooperative
effort between parents, teachers
and students.

Lady Crusaders softball 4PEAT
As the Lady Crusaders began their quest for a fourth
straight CIF Championship, they knew it would be a tough
road. However, the difference was a 10 year old girl named
Carli. The Lady Crusaders adopted Carli as their honorary
player at the beginning of the season. Carli Gastaneau has
undergone many surgeries—five on her heart, three on her
stomach, and three on her eyes. As the season came to its
close, the Lady Crusaders dedicated their playoff run to Carli.
After shutting out Otay Ranch to end the regular season, the
Lady Crusaders went on to a 4-0 playoff run leaving their
opponents scoreless in all four games, finishing 25-7 and
capturing a fourth straight CIF Championship. They are one of
only three teams to accomplish such a feat. Carli was proudly
there to accept the trophy.

the students to whom she administered and taught. Anyone who has ever known or met Mary knows her love
for the Crusader family and this was demonstrated by her sending her children through Marian. She made a
difference in the lives of those she touched day in and day out at Marian and throughout her career and even
now in retirement. Mary stands as a shining example of what a recipient of the Distinguished Crusader Award
represents. Her daughter, Lani, attended the induction ceremony and accepted the award on her mother’s behalf.
Steven Boudreau, Esq.
MDCHS Board of Directors and Friend of the Crusaders
Even though a Uni Class of 1969 alum, Steve has been an active member of the Marian/Mater Dei Catholic family
since Dr. Kassebaum brought him onboard in 1995 as a member of the Marian Development Board. He has been
an active member of the Mater Dei Board of Directors since the school opened in 2007. Steve is a 1976 graduate
from Cal Western Law School and besides his 35 years of trial lawyer work he has career has involved substantial
pro bono work to include clients who were assigned to his firm as a result of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade
Center, which include the wives and children of the New York City firemen and policemen. In addition to all of
the above he is also the chairman of the Dr. Kassebaum Scholarship Committee which provides scholarships for
students at Mater Dei Catholic who give back to the community. Steve has set the bar high for his profession in
giving back to the community. He has been a true friend of Marian and Mater Dei Catholic High School.

Greetings Crusaders
It has been over 53 years since Marian opened it’s doors for the first time
and the Class of 1964 entered as young freshmen. This spring they will
celebrate their 50th anniversary as Marian graduates and alumni.
As we begin a new school year, I hope I can count on all of you to
help execute our new creative ideas for 2013-2014. I ask for your
ambassadorship to help guide our new Marian/Mater Dei Alumni
Association, as we strive to achieve Value, Support and Loyalty in the
representation of every alumni of our great alma mater.
So I encourage you to join us! Continue shining as Crusaders and as part
of our family and lifelong Crusader team! There is a lot happening at our
Alma Mater and as an alum you are invited to come back and participate.
We had a lovely memorial Mass and blessing of the pavers on Saturday,
August 24 in which we remembered and honored those who have passed.
In the Remembrance Garden behind the Marian Chapel are pavers with the names of deceased loved ones. Visit the
school website to find out more about having a paver with your loved one’s name on it placed in the garden.
The 37th Annual Crusader Golf Tournament is on Sunday, October 27 at Salt Creek Golf Club in Chula Vista. It is
a four-person best ball scramble so everyone can play. Download an application from the school’s website. Come on
out and help support the school and the tuition assistance fund. Homecoming will be on Friday, November 1 with
our Crusader football team looking for their 3rd straight Metro-Pacific League title.
The Wednesday before homecoming (October 30) we will honor the next class of inductees into the Crusader Sports
Hall of Fame. This induction takes place in the foyer of the Bosco Center Gym at 6:30 pm and all of you are invited.
This years inductees are:
◊ Dan Prager ’72 – Three sport athlete at Marian and played football at San Jose State
◊ Yessenia Martinez ’94 – All CIF Softball player at Marian
◊ Domonic Cruz ’98 – Three sport athlete at Marian, played football at Nevada, Coach and Teacher at Mater Dei
◊ Dario Aguiniga ’00 – All CIF Kicker at Marian, football at New Mexico State and finalist for the Lou Groza

◊ Mickey Pimentel ’03 – Multi sport athlete at Marian, UT All County Defense Player of the Year, football at
UC Berkley and played for the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL
◊ 2003 Football Team – CIFSD and State Div III Champions
The Alumni Association is here to provide Value, Support and create Loyalty among all Marian/Mater Dei Alumni. If you
would like to get more involved or have suggestions for the Alumni Association please let me know. You can also get
information and connect with fellow alumni via our “Marian and Mater Dei Crusaders Alumni Association” page on
Facebook. It is a great time to become involved, continue the Crusader tradition and help make a difference!
Truly yours,
Jose Iniguez
