Randy Bennett, Saint Mary’s Head Coach
A two-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year (2011, 2008) and
2010 Sporting News WCC Coach of the Year, Randy Bennett, took over as the
head men’s basketball coach prior to the 2001-02 season.
In his 14th season, he is the school’s all-time wins leader, guided SMC to
eight post-season appearances (5 NCAA and 3 NIT), led the Gaels to their first
post-season victory and had a player drafted (Patrick Mills, 2009) by the NBA
for the first time since 1984. Two Gaels are currently playing in the NBA.
Bennett is third all-time among WCC coaches in career league wins and
has a 289-136 (.680) record while compiling a 126-60 (.677) mark in WCC
regular-season competition. Bennett became the winningest coach at SMC
when the Gaels defeated East Tennessee State in the semifinals of the Rainbow
Classic on December 21, 2007, passing James Weaver (110-67), who held the record for 47 years.
He has led SMC to at least the semifinals of the WCC Tournament in each of his 13 seasons, and seven
championship game appearances. His side captured WCC Tournament titles in 2010 and 2012. Under
Bennett’s tutelage, the Gaels have posted seven secA Quick SMC Snapshot Under RB

with six double-doubles in the team’s eight
games.
Need To Know - About The Gaels
»» Perhaps the biggest loss from last year’s
team is Stephen Holt. The school’s 10thleading career scorer, the 1st team all-WCC
guard is currently playing for the Canton
Charge of the NBA’s D-League after spending
summer league with the Atlanta Hawks and
training camp with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
»» Other losses from last season include:
guards Jordan Giusti, Paul McCoy and James
Walker III, forwards Beau Levesque and Eividas Petrulis and center Matthew Hodgson.
»» Saint Mary’s plays eight regular season
games against teams predicted by ESPN’s
Bracketolgy to advance to this year’s NCAA
Tournament: BYU, Denver, Gonzaga, New
Mexico State, Northeastern and UC Irvine.
So far, the Gaels are 3-0 against that group
of teams.
»» Saint Mary’s has the highest winning
percentage and 3rd-most NCAA Tournament
appearances of any Division I program in the
state of California over the last decade.
2014-15 Saint Mary’s Men’s Basketball
»» Saint Mary’s has suffered consecutive
non-conference losses only three times over
the last eight seasons (2007-14) and has not
lost 3-straight WCC games since 2007. This
season’s consecutive non-conference home
losses marks the first time that’s happened
since 2002-03.
»» Saint Mary’s is 137-16 over the last five
seasons when scoring 70 points or more.
»» The Gaels men’s basketball program
registered 91 percent in a recent NCAA
Graduation Success Rate report. SMC’s 93
percent overall GSR for student-athletes is
the 3rd-highest percentage among Division I
institutions in the state of California.
Streak Busters
With its 71-67 overtime win at Creighton,
the Gaels ended the Bluejays’ 24-game home
win streak, at that time the 5th longest in the
country.
Point Guard U
When Aaron Bright decided to transfer to
Saint Mary’s to attend grad school for his
final year of eligibility, he joined some pretty
good company in the Gaels’ point guard lineage. A few of the point guards under Randy
Bennett that preceded Bright were 1st team
all-WCC standouts Patrick Mills, Mickey McConnell, Matthew Dellavedova and Stephen
Holt. Mills, McConnell and Dellavedova were
each Bob Cousy Award finalists.

SMC vs. the Big East
The Gaels’ win at Creighton was the
program’s first road victory at a Big East
Conference program - while competing as a
basketball member of that conference. Saint

Waldow Earns WCC Player of the Week
Saint Mary’s senior forward earned WCC
Player of the Week honors following a stellar
3-game stretch to lead the Gaels to wins over
New Mexico State, Denver and UC Irvine.
He averaged 23.3 points and 8.7 rebounds
per game and shot .652 from the field in the
3 games and tied his career best with 28
points against UC Irvine’s 7’-6” Mamadou
Ndiaye.
Gaels In Shamrock Classic Games
Saint Mary’s has hosted the annual Shamrock Office Solutions Classic for 12 straight
seasons. 27 different teams have participated in the event since 2003. SMC is 19-1
in the event. The Boise State loss was the
Gaels’ first in the event.
5th Year Transfers
Guard Aaron Bright and forward Desmond
Simmons joined the Saint Mary’s program
last summer after the two players earned
undergraduate degrees at Pac-12 Conference institutions. Both players are utilizing
a NCAA rule that allow players who graduate
to transfer for their final season of eligibility
without having to sit out a season.
Bright earned his degree in science,
technology and society from Stanford, while
graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in anthropology. Both
players are enrolled in SMC’s M.A. in Leadership program.
NBA Take Notice
For the first time in program history, Saint
Mary’s can claim two players active in the
NBA. San Antonio’s Patrick Mills played a
key role in the Spurs’ 2013 run to the NBA
title, serving as the primary backup at
2014-15 Saint Mary’s Men’s Basketball
point guard and making key contributions
throughout the season. Mills’ compatriot
Matthew Dellavedova is also making an
immediate impact in the NBA as a guard
with Cleveland, already earning a handful of
starts in just his second season in the NBA.
King James On Delly
Matthew Dellavedova is already a beloved
figure in Moraga, but it hasn’t taken him long
to establish the same kind of reputation in
Cleveland. His teammate and four-time NBA
MVP LeBron James offered this assessment
of the former Gael after a game on Dec. 9,
2014: “He’s just scrappy man,” James said.
“Delly is a guy that’s always been counted
out. Saying he can’t make it, he can’t do this,
he can’t shoot enough, not fast enough, not
tall enough. One thing about it: Heart and
effort will take away a lot of the things that
you cannot do. I’ll take a guy like that any
day on my team.”
Saint Mary’s On Television In 2014-15
Saint Mary’s is scheduled to appear on
television at least 22 times this season with
another four appearances on the WCC’s digital network - TheW.tv. The three remaining
games (all non-WCC) will feature a live video
stream via SMCGaels.com.
Gaels Add Four Incoming Freshmen
The Gaels signed three incoming freshmen
that will join the program next season: Kyle
Clark (Wynyard, Tasmania, Australia), Stefan
Gonzalez (Pocatello, Idaho), Jordan Hunter
(Sydney, Australia) and Tanner Krebs (Hobart, Tasmania, Australia).
Gaels In ESPN Midnight Games
Saint Mary’s has played in six total ESPN
Tip-Off Marathon events - all at home and all
victorious for the Gaels.

Waldow Moves Up Career Listings
Heading into last season, Brad Waldow
might have been best known for losing a
tooth (and Coach Bennett’s subsequent reaction - visit YouTube for a visual) in the 2012
WCC Tournament. Now, the all-WCC forward
is known for being one of the top big men in
program history. The Shingle Springs, Calif.
(pop. 4,432) native is among SMC’s best ever
and is climbing several statistical charts.
Last year he became the 31st Saint Mary’s
men’s basketball player to surpass the
1,000-point total in his career. He enters the
St. John’s game with 1,326 points, which is
12th on the school’s career list. He is also
4th in career blocked shots with 116.

Bennett Has Lasting Power
Saint Mary’s is one of just three Division I
men’s basketball programs in the state of
California to have the same head coach in
each of the last 10 seasons. Randy Bennett
is joined by only Bob Williams of UC Santa
Barbara and Steve Fisher of San Diego State
as the state’s only 10+ year coaches at their
institution. Bennett’s Gaels have also been
the most successful among that group of
the last decade, winning 73 percent of their
games heading into this season.
On a national level, Bennett is tied for the
22nd longest active tenure at one institution,
according to sports-reference.com.

SMC To Renovate McKeon Pavilion
Saint Mary’s announced last winter it plans
to build a new Student-Athlete Performance
Center and renovate McKeon Pavilion. The
$13 million project features dedicated facilities for varsity athletes, including a weight
room, training and on-site sports medicine
areas, a new volleyball locker room and
academic services area. The project will
also add approximately 500 seats to McKeon
Pavilion. The project was made possible by
a lead gift of $1 million from Kevin M. Nagel,
CEO of Envision Pharmaceutical Holdings
and minority owner of the Sacramento
Kings.

Aussies Under Bennett’s Reign
When Randy Bennett came to Moraga in
2001, he recruited Australian Adam Caporn
(2001-03) to fill a void at point guard.
Caporn helped bring SMC all-time leading
scorer Daniel Kickert (2002-06) to Moraga
in 2002, which then sparked the transfer of
Carlin Hughes (2007-09) and Lucas Walker
(2007-09) from Montana State-Billings. Ben
Allen (2008-10) joined the mix prior to the
2007-08 season when he transferred to SMC
from Indiana. Patrick Mills (2007-09) came
the same year, and Clint Steindl (2008-12)
made the trip across the Pacific Ocean prior
for the start of the 2008-09 campaign. Two
years later, Matthew Dellavedova (2009-13),
Jorden Page (2009-13) and Mitchell Young
(2009-13) joined the Gaels. Matthew Hodgson, Dane Pineau, Emmett Naar and Jock
Landale are the most recent Aussies to join
the team. Aussie Junior National Team players Kyle Clark, Jordan Hunter and Tanner
Krebs will arrive next season.
