A Fond Farewell and
Best Wishes to Tremont
Councilman of 19 years,
Joseph Cimperman!
Joe Cimperman has been an ambassador for the
Tremont and Duck Island neighborhoods. He was
there when we needed strength, to gather us to heal,
to rise above whatever issue was bringing us down.
He supported the start of many annual events: The
Tremont Farmers’ Market, Tremont Arts & Cultural
Festival, Arts in August and bringing the Cleveland
Marathon through our streets. He brought updates
to Lincoln Park, and the Dog Park at Clark Field,
where he volunteered. He walked the streets with city
workers exhorting them to fix street lights, pot holes,
trees, and sidewalks. He helped save Tremont School
no less than three times and spoke up when ODOT
wanted to slow down the building of the Innerbelt
Bridge. He was one of us for many years and as his
legacy will remain as Tremont’s beloved Councilman,
we hope Tremont and Duck Island will remain forever
in his heart! Best Wishes, Joe, in your new role as
President of Global Cleveland!

CLEVELAND COLD STORAGE
BUILDING AKA
DISTRIBUTION TERMINAL AND
COLD STORAGE
COMPANY
New York and Chicago. Six floors of
We shared this piece in Inside Tremont
in a past article and thought it might
be good to share again with the newer
residents of Tremont and/or those who
missed it the first time.
As of January 1, 1928, the Distribution
Terminal & Cold Storage Company at
2000 West 14th Street (1988 to 2012
West 14th Street) was the largest dry and
cold storage plant between the eastern
seaboard and Chicago.
It WAS a 12-story, reinforced concrete
structure modernly equipped.
The
cost to build it was $3,700,000. The
warehouse was one of three built by
Continental Terminals.
Five million
cubic feet of storage space was added
to the Cleveland Terminal facilities. The
building’s floor was laid on the valley
bottom. Three floors were cast against
the embankment and cement
forms carried the building up to twelve
floors. Trucks ran past the bottom floor
and trucks backed up to the second and
fourth floors because the plant was on a
slope. Thirty vehicles could be loaded
there at one time.
Because of unusual elevator and loading
equipment, eggs, poultry, meats, cheese
and butter could be handled there faster
than in any other warehouse between
dry, and six floors of cold storage; an
ice house with 4,000 tons capacity,
a power plant, an automatic call and
pneumatic tube order and delivery
systems, private tracks, and a roof
parking area of an acre were part of
the “equipment’ available.
The designer: The Distribution
Terminal & Cold Storage Company
building was designed by Wilbur J.
Watson and Associates. Mr. Watson
was born in Berea, Ohio and received
a Bachelor of Science from Case
School of Engineering (now part of
Case Western Reserve University).
He was an internationally known
bridge engineer and designer.
Among his designs are the High
Level Bridge, the Main Avenue
Bridge, the old Clark Avenue Bridge,
and the Lorain Carnegie Bridge
(Hope Memorial Bridge). Mr. Watson
was also a consulting engineer
for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber
Company and the Firestone Tire &
Rubber Company. His design for the
giant Zeppelin dock in Akron brought
international recognition as it was the
world’s largest structure unsupported
by columns.
Tremont Artist in Residence Update
Tremont Community AIR’s Mural Project continues to make progress. As of the
end of March, Angelica Pozo will have worked with over 350 Tremont residents
and friends, having created more than 700 tiles in the process, putting us very
close to our goal. To finish them off, there will be one last public decorating session
on April 13th, 6-9pm. In the coming months leading up to a planned installation in
June, Angelica will continue to work with 2 core groups which have been bonding
through art making. Those groups are The Illustrators, who are depicting Tremont
historic sites onto tile, and a more loosely organized group, the Art Crew who will
work on all other aspects of the project leading up to and including installation.
Each group will meet weekly until we are done. To keep track of our progress and
see what we’re working on, check out the group’s Facebook page: https://www.

Your Monthly Update from the GVV Bridge
Project Team
Steel Erection Over Water Closes
River Temporarily: Construction of the
second GVV Bridge has moved into the
Cuyahoga River! A crane is stationed on
a barge and moves into position daily
requiring only temporary shutdowns of
the river. Crews work around commercial
traffic, but recreational water craft is not
permitted to pass through during work
hours. This is scheduled to take place
through May.
Work on West Slope and Over
Abbey Avenue:
Soon, Tremonters
should expect short-term closures of
Abbey Avenue under I-90 as crews
erect shoring towers (to help with steel
erection) and repair pavement. Another
10-day closure of Abbey is expected in
June as crews erect steel overhead. The
detour is easy, simply use the NEW West
14th connection to travel under the new
bridges and connect with Fairfield and
West 11th Street.
On the west slope itself, residents will
soon see some work associated with the
Towpath Trail beginning this spring! While
much work is needed on the west slope
before the trail is complete, this is sure to
be a welcome sight. Some landscaping
is likely to be installed this year, but the
bulk of plantings are not anticipated to be
complete until 2017, as the area will still
be used to host construction equipment
for work on the main viaduct overhead.
The final piece of the Towpath is a
protective canopy under the Norfolk
Southern rail bridge which will be
complete in 2017. The Towpath cannot
open to the public until this is complete.
Additional Work in Other Tremont
Areas: While the majority of upcoming
work in the Tremont area will be
happening in the vicinity of Abbey
and the slope area leading to the
Cuyahoga River, there is still some
work to be done between Fairfield
Avenue and Starkweather Avenue.
Fencing is being replaced and crews
will plant trees and shrubs in the area
separating the homes from I-90.
Crews will also complete painting of
the two overpasses as well as the
bridge columns which include the
varied international flags. Graffiti in
the area will also be covered.
Finally, portions of Starkweather and
Kenilworth will be paved (between
West 14th Street and Scranton Road).
Work is weather dependent and
will be scheduled with other paving
activities outside the neighborhood.
Work on the new “Sideyard” park will
also begin this summer and continue
thru the fall!
Remember: Getting to Tremont is
still easy using the new Abbey loop
ramp. However, the W 14th Street
entrance ramp to I-90 east is closed
until the second bridge is complete in
late 2016. Please keep in mind this is
an active construction zone and stay
safely away.
For more info on the project, visit
www.Innerbelt.org.

park is starting to take shape. Major
work will begin this summer and
continue thru the fall! Photo Credit:

Tremont neighborhood, Duck Island, may not be known for
having a vast sense of history and sustainability, but thanks to
Jay Demagall and likeminded service professionals, that could
all change very soon. What was once an authentic beer tavern
in 1865 will soon become the site of Forest City Brewery, Duck
Rabbit Coffee, and Western Reserve Meadery. Located at
2135 Columbus Road, the building is continuing Tremont’s recent
trend of reusing, recycling, and repurposing.
The Brewery, which will occupy about 12,000 square feet, will
once again serve the buildings original purpose: brewing beer.
Between the years of 1865 and 1915, a family from France living
near areas of Germany famous for beer, brought their family tavern
to Cleveland. Now in spring of 2016, Demagall and the other new businesses are thrilled to bring the old
tavern to life again using what the building has provided.
Original walls and concrete blocks from 1915 are only some of the ways Demagall and other business
owners are reusing and honoring the past. “Our business model is a throwback to the days of guilds and
small batch manufacturing,” said Demagall. “But not 1915 prices,” he joked.
The name Forest City Brewery is even a tribute to a brewery with the same name in Cleveland circa 1839.
That brewery operated for nearly 40 years on a site that is now the Hard Rock Café. The new location of
Forest City Brewery will also hold the second oldest beer garden in the state. The garden is surrounded with
trees originally planted in 1865. The beer garden will open this spring as well.
Western Reserve Meadery, owned and operated by Doug Shaw and Jason Andro, also share in Demagalls
appreciation of the past. A perfect example is their bar top made from an old garage panel found in the
building during renovation. Even the wine racks that will soon line their walls are made from the buildings
original timber frame.
Doug and Jason have been home brewing mead for almost 8 years and plan to continue making their
award winning product using only local and domestic suppliers. “Absolutely no importing,” promised Shaw.
Duck Rabbit Coffee, which once was the international headquarters for Clover Farms in 1930, pays tribute
to the old business with framed marketing material from the height of advertising in America. Cal Verga,
owner and brewer, collects his beans directly from farmers all over the world. Coffee drinkers will enjoy
Duck Rabbit’s uniqueness. Besides Root Café, in Lakewood, Verga’s brews are not found anywhere else
in Cleveland.
Whether beer, coffee, or mead, the new owners share similar business models as well as appreciation
for the neighborhood’s past and future. All products are craft and brewed in small lots just like the old
manufacturers that shaped Cleveland’s history. As far as the community, we consider all our guests to be
neighbors, “said Andro.
The spring is always a sign of rebirth and rejuvenation, but this year, Forest City and its partners are giving
life to the Tremont community. The uniqueness and exclusiveness of these craft products are sure to give
Duck Island sustainability for years to come.

Danny Rizk has been a local resident for 2+ years and
frequent visitor for 5 years. We aske Danny, Why Tremont?
He responded: It's a community that works together and
supports each other. I learned that very quickly talking with
local residents and business owners. It's been my home for
a little while now and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else
to live and open my first business.
Growing up in a Lebanese family, I was always so
passionate about food. I always dreamed of opening my
own cafe. I grew up in the suburbs of Akron and graduated
with an International Business and Entrepreneurship Degree
from The University of Akron. I worked in Supply Chain and
Marketing for one year before working locally in Tremont
for over a year as a lead technical recruiter for startups in
Northeast Ohio at Integrity Power Search. Post college, I
studied nutrition for a couple years and am very passionate
about it. I decided to pursue my dream of having my own
smoothie and coffee shop at age 25. I wanted to bring unique
drinks and embrace an overall healthy lifestyle in the menu.
I like to keep things simple, healthy and delicious. I'm so
excited that I have taken the leap into my first venture as an
Entrepreneur.

YELLOW BRICK ROAD LEADS WIZARD OF ODDZ TO
TREMONT
Vintage Shop Set Opens Its Storefront on Kenilworth Avenue
“If you’re looking for fun, funky, whimsical and
unique items for your home, you’ve found the right
place!” This is the first message you’re greeted with
when visiting the website for Wizard of Oddz, a
Cleveland based vintage resale business started by
owner, Megan Baechle, in 2014. Megan has spent
the last few years building the business and has gone
from hosting a few trial sales out of her garage just a
few years ago to selling with The Cleveland Flea and
a number of other artisan shows around Northeast
Ohio. They opened at 1026 Kenilworth for the March
Tremont ArtWalk. “My hope is that the storefront will
give us a home base and afford us the opportunity
to offer a wider variety of eclectic pieces for our
customers”, says Baechle about the launch of the
store.
Combining her taste for all things odd with a
childhood spent scouring through flea markets with
her dad, Baechle decided to turn her passion for
upcycling into a business. “When I was a kid, I was
the self-proclaimed mega fan of Wizard of Oz. It never
ceased to amaze me every time Dorothy stepped out
of her tornado stricken house and the picture would
suddenly transform from black and white to color.”
Baechle credits her all-time favorite movie not only
for the inspiration behind her business’ name, but
believes it inspired the beginning of her taste for the
bold, the bright and the bizarre.
Her vision for starting Wizard of Oddz was to refinish,
repurpose, upcycle and recycle vintage items to
bring them back to market for today’s consumer. She
believes the company serves a unique sweet spot for
consumers who want unique, vintage items for their
homes, but don’t have the ability or time to refinish
those items themselves. By utilizing her creative
vision, she turns 20th century items into one of a
kind pieces that work with 21st century style. She
specializes in refinishing retro and mod furniture from
the 1940s-1970s but also carries a wide variety of
unique vintage odds and ends. Some of Baechle’s
favorite finds include lamps and lighting, artwork,
mirrors, glassware, barware, collectables, sports
and pop culture memorabilia, children’s books
and toys, and holiday décor.
When describing a typical Wizard of Oddz
customer, Baechle says that, “The customer who
truly ‘gets us’ is someone who is free spirited,
eclectic, has an eye for style, and is creative. They
appreciate uniqueness when they see it and want
to select pieces for their home that reflect their
style.” She also notes that her customers have
a tendency to gravitate toward the unusual and
are not afraid to take risks with their style choices.
“They appreciate vintage pieces because of the
nostalgia factor, but they want to ensure that those
pieces are being incorporated into their décor in a
way that makes sense with today’s trends. And of
course, they thrive on the thrill of the never ending
treasure hunt.”
As a recent graduate of the Bad Girl Ventures
program, an educational course that helps
launch women-owned small businesses, Baechle
believes in the power of women supporting each
other, especially when it comes to the, at times,
tumultuous experience of entrepreneurship. “I
cannot say enough good things about the Bad
Girl Ventures program. I’ve never belonged to a
more supportive community of women who were
willing to share their knowledge and experience
with one another. I simply would not be where I
am today without BGV.” Wizard of Oddz opened
its doors alongside another Bad Girl Ventures
graduate, Jennifer Marks of Makers by J. Marks
(www.makersstyle.com).

West staff with direct input from Block Clubs.
Auburn-Lincoln Park
The Auburn-Lincoln Park Block Club met on Monday, March 21st
at Zion United Church of Christ School Building. Please note: the
meeting occurred prior to this publication’s print deadline so a
further report will be available in the May issue. On the schedule
for discussion: an update on the property at 1205 Starkweather
(AKA Theater Building/American Legion Post 577) and the
request by the property owners, St. George Antiochian Orthodox
Church, to rezone it from multi-family to retail designation
(“where we are now” in the process; an update on Tremont
Montessori School and with the Facility Recommendation of
the Friends of Tremont School; considering individual and block
club participation in the Cleveland Marathon (a new route brings
the runners from Jefferson Ave/Tremont Ave to Starkweather
Ave and west to Scranton Rd – route info and road closure
times are now available) and the RiverSweep Clean-up, both
coming in May); and a response to RTA proposed service cuts
in Tremont – we’re encouraged to make our voices heard at
an upcoming public meeting on April 4th at Tremont Pointe
Community Room – and write letters/e-mails to RTA advocating
retaining bus service on W. 7th Street. Patti Choby has agreed to
serve as a point person for the block club on this issue. Special
guests were to include Mark Pratt, Tremont Safety Coordinator
to discuss residents’ safety concerns and a representative of
the Tremont West Nominating Committee seeking potential
candidates to serve a term on the Tremont West Board of
Directors. At the February meeting, nominations were solicited
for Co-chairs and Secretary for 2016. Nominated for Co-Chairs:
Kate O’Neil and George Brown. Nominated for Secretary: Patti
Choby. Nominations will be finalized with a formal vote at the
March meeting. Congratulations to Kate, George, and Patti!
Many thanks to outgoing Co-Chair, Brooke Willis, for his faithful
service this past year, and thanks as well to Kate and Patti for the
service in 2015 and their willingness to serve for an additional
year! Tremont West Development’s Membership Drive was to be
discussed and a Membership Form to be distributed to members.
All members who want to vote in the TWDC Board Elections
must complete and have a membership form on file at TWDC.
New members can sign up by completing a form and returning
it to Tremont West offices no later than April 1st to vote in this
year’s Annual Meeting in May. Check www.tremontwest.org for
more information. The Cleveland International Film Festival
takes place at Tower City March 30th– April 10th. Check out
hundreds of films from around the world. More info is available
at clevelandfilm.org. Members with any block club questions
can contact Co-Chairs, Kate O’Neil at auburnlincolnpark@
gmail.com and George Brown at [email protected]
or Scott Rosenstein at 216.575.0920 X106 or scottrosenstein@

club on Facebook - www.Facebook.com/auburnblockclub.
Members are reminded to visit www.tremontwest.org regularly to
keep updated on neighborhood events. Please join us for our
next meeting on Monday, April 18th, 6:30pm. Location TBA.
Central Tremont
Central Tremont neighbors met for their first formal meeting
of the year on Monday, March 7th at the Jefferson Branch of
the Cleveland Public Library. We started off the meeting with
a presentation by representatives from the Rite Aid Cleveland
Marathon, which will be coming through this block club for the
first time on Sunday, May 15th. Marathon Organizers Jack Staph
and Kayla Henderson showed membership the new route for
2016, which has been changed slightly due to construction in
various areas. 10,000 marathon participants are expected to
come through Tremont between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00am.
Please expect detours and no parking on some streets (signs
will be posted around impacted areas). The course map can
be found at http://www.clevelandmarathon.com/course_maps/.
Please make sure to come and help cheer on marathoners at
one of the neighborhood cheering sections! Board members
from the nationally recognized convergence-continuum theatre
company (which performs out of the Liminis Theatre on Scranton
Rd.) also joined us to share information about the work they do,
specifically the capital campaign they have organized to purchase
the theatre building. The building’s owner and theatre founder,
Clyde Simon, is retiring and plans to sell the building and theatre
equipment. The Board hopes to keep the theatre operational
in Tremont and has started a campaign to raise the $200,000
needed to purchase the building and cover maintenance costs.
They are seeking donations, grant funding, and corporate
sponsorships to raise the money needed by the end of this
year. Future fundraisers will also be planned. Tax-deductible
donations can be made at www.convergence-continuum.org, or
by sending a check to convergence-continuum at 2438 Scranton
Road. The theatre’s next production is Booty Candy by Robert
O’Hara, directed by Terrence Spivey. It will run from March 25thApril 16th. Please get out and help keep this community asset
in Tremont! Kevin Kubovcik, the Store Manager for the soon-toopen Tremont General Store also joined us. Kevin plans to sell
housewares, gardening supplies, natural cleaning supplies, bird
seed and houses, chicken feed, pet food, plants, and pottery. He
will also sell locally sourced eggs, cheeses, milk, butter, baked
goods, meats, and produce. The block club voted on and passed
the construction of a 6 ft. tall decorative fence that Kevin will install
on around the back of the property. The store is located at 2418
Professor Avenue, and there is a soft launch planned for April
1st. This is an exciting development for the neighborhood. Jaime
Declet, Branch Manager of the Jefferson and South Branches of
the CPL, spoke about the future of the South Branch, located on
Scranton Road. Plans for the full renovation of the branch are
underway, with a move-in goal set for July of 2017. The library
was built in 1911 and most of the original historical architecture
will remain intact. In March, Ann Marie Riley resigned as the
Central Tremont Block Club Co-Chair after three years of
dedicated service. At March’s meeting, members elected Julie
Goulis to serve as a 2016 Co-Chair alongside Lynne Nowel.
We’d like to thank Ann Marie for her unwavering commitment
and service to the block club. Her time and effort over the last
three years has grown the block club and helped create a
positive, productive space for neighbors to come together each
month. We look forward to working with Julie and Lynne over the
next year! Join us for our next meeting on Monday April 4th
at 6:30pm at a TBD location. For more information on the block
club and its activities, please contact Co-Chairs Lynne Nowel
([email protected]) or Julie Goulis ([email protected]). Or

Duck Island
The Duck Island Block Club met at St. Wendelin’s Parish rectory
on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 and was called to order at 6:30pm
by Co-Chair Tyree Thompson. As part of Safety & Court Watch
program, Mark Pratt, Tremont & Duck Island Safety Coordinator
was introduced to the membership and answered a few questions
clarifying his role as safety coordinator at Tremont West. A special
invitation to the next Safety Committee meeting was extended to
all members. Again we were encouraged by Co-Chair Thompson
to report any crime, and also encouraged to take advantage
of our Duck Island Community Crime Watch Facebook Page.
Its Cleveland Marathon time again, and special guests Joan
Freese and Kayla Henderson, were on board to review the new
marathon route and its effect on our neighborhood. There were
Inside Tremont
questions and comments by Grove Court residents about street
closures and the time-line of Marathon traffic. The date is Sunday
May 15th and anyone with further questions is encouraged to
contact the Cleveland Marathon offices. Special guest, Mark
Ebner, returned representing himself as a Tremont resident
proposing new development at the southeast corner of Freeman
and West 19th Street. A series of questions and comments
ensued about the make-up of the project and its compliance
with some neighborhood guidelines for development. Both
structures required several variances which were outlined by the
planning commission. After a discussion and some clarifications,
the voting membership voted 7/7 tie and 1 abstention. We were
therefore unable to give DIBC support for this project at this time.
Mr. Ebner was, however, encouraged to modify his design and
return at a later time. Other old business consisted of a brief
update about our own DI Mural and the upcoming spring and
summer season for its completion. Then both, Scott Rosenstein
and Tyree Thompson reminded us to take advantage of the
Public Sessions for the Tile-Making Sessions of the Angelica
Pozo Mural Project. The sessions are Wednesdays throughout
the month of March. Scott also had several new business items
to discuss involving TWDC. Membership drive is live with a
deadline of April 1st to return membership forms and be eligible
to vote in this year’s Annual Meeting scheduled for Thursday,
May 19th. New Board candidates are being sought. Prospective
Board candidates should contact LerVal Elva or Andrew Stebbins
– [email protected] – to discuss the process and timeline.
Upcoming events and announcements were then discussed
by Scott Rosenstein, and a reminder to get ready for Primary
Elections. Tyree accepted a motion to adjourn and a short,
but productive meeting concluded about 7:30. We encourage
our DIBC membership to bring ideas and issues, as well as
requests for speakers and guests to our Co-Chairs. If you have
any questions about the block club and its activities, feel free to
contact Co-Chairs, Tyree Thompson – [email protected] and

Lincoln Heights
The Lincoln Heights Block Club held its March meeting
on Monday, March 14th at Porco Lounge and Tiki Room.
Representatives from Dominion East were in attendance
to provide us with updates on resolutions to complaints by
residents on West 18th Place after recent emergency repairs
were performed. They have asked that we give them a little
more time to rectify the current conditions of the road; most
of this should be completed by spring. Street sweeping was
requested in the meantime to mitigate the dirt and dust being
tracked into residents’ homes and vehicles. Caitlyn Johnson
from the Ohio Organizing Collaborative provided us with
updates with respect to their efforts to engage RTA with finding
sustainable ways to fund public transit as well as information
on how we as individuals can get involved. Our gracious host,
Stefan Was gave us a brief history and tour of Porco Lounge
as well as some background on the art of tiki in Cleveland and
a sampling of snacks from the menu. Also discussed were the
status of several projects in development in our service area,
the recent car vandalism which has taken place throughout
Tremont, speculation as to who will be our new Councilperson,
and an introduction to the group of Gusty Molnar, who will be
sharing plans for a new residential project with us in the coming
months. Groundbreaking on The Lincoln project will hopefully
begin as early as July, dependent on sales of units. Be sure to
join us at our April meeting on Monday April 11th, at 6pm
at The Cleveland Animal Protective League (1729 Willey).
We have invited all city officials who attended our November
meeting to come provide updates to infrastructure concerns
in our area. Please note that this meeting is slated to be just
as large as our November meeting, and will begin earlier than
usual to allow City Council members to attend before their
meeting at City Hall. Keep an eye out for postcards and flyers
with more details about April’s agenda. If you have not had the
chance already, please visit our new Facebook page at www.
facebook.com/groups/LHBlockClub/. For more information on
upcoming meetings, minutes and other block club activities,
please email Chairperson Henry Senyak at [email protected],
or call Community Organizer Lindsay Smetana at Tremont West
at (216) 575.0920 x 102. We can’t wait to see everyone again
in April!
Mentor Castle Clark/
Holmden Buhrer Rowley
The HBR-MCC Block Club met again at our new home, Zion
Church, for our March meeting. Safety concerns discussed
included Tremont’s rash of BB gun pellet car window breakages,
and a couple of our members being chased out of Holmden Hill
Community Garden by an unneutered male tan and white Pitbull
loose on Holmden Ave. We reviewed the Block Clubs’ By-laws
and discussed potential amendments, including a potential
amendment to require a minimum HBR-MCC Block Club annual
attendance for all voting members. This was a discussion only.
We will review the proposed amendments again in April and then
take a vote in May. All interested members are encouraged to
attend. Concern was expressed about clarity of our block club
boundaries overlapping with others and the potential confusion
for Tremont residents living within two different block clubs.
Membership decided to make our bylaws more concrete on block
club boundaries, and those allowed a vote on issues effecting
only one block club. Membership discussed development density
on our blocks, and potential conflicts between City of Cleveland
development policies and resident objections to multiple units
planned for single land plots. Membership discussed Clark Field
recently being declared a park (after all these years!). Some
members expressed concern regarding five different houses not
bringing their trash cans back from the curb on a weekly basis.
Bev asked for a print out of the new recycling regulations for the
April meeting. Council Representative Tony Brancatelli updated
members on potholes, street sweeping, and other city services,
and addressed member concerns, including glass and debris
on our end of the 490 footbridge and the request for a sweep
up. April’s meeting: Our next meeting will be Wednesday,
April 6, and will be held at our new location, Zion Church
(2716 West 14th St). If you have questions or would like more
information on the block club and its activities, please contact
Co-Chairs, Joel Reynolds ([email protected]),
Beverly Wurm ([email protected]), or Secretary Rich
Weiss ([email protected]), or contact Lindsay at Tremont
West (216.575.0920 x 102 or LindsaySmetana@tremontwest.

Metro North
The block club was on a winter break, and did not hold its own
business meeting in February. Metro North members and friends
were invited by Tremont resident and nationally recognized
ceramic artist, Angelica Pozo, to participate in a collaborative
intergenerational community art project – a tile mosaic mural
for the retaining wall in Lincoln Park along the gazebo square,
which will consist of historic images and text panels to be
surrounded by colorfully patterned tiles. 744 of these small
tiles need to be created – and Angelica invited us to participate in their
creation. An art-making session for the members of Metro North was
held on Tuesday, February 23rd. A great time was had by all attendees!
Public sessions of art-making continue. Please contact Angelica Pozo –
[email protected] – or Scott at Tremont West – 216.575.0920
X106 – for more info. A Community Meeting to discuss a project update
on the Lofts at Lion Mills (3256 W. 25th Street & Meyer Avenue) was
held on Tuesday, March 1st at the Stockyard, Clark Fulton & Brooklyn
Centre Community Development Office, with three variances related to
parking spaces, gross floor area, and rear yard space discussed. For more
information, please contact Greg Baron at 216.961.4242 ext. 224. Our
first business meeting of 2016 was scheduled for Tuesday, March 22nd.
On the agenda for discussion were: RTA proposed service cuts in Tremont
(we are encouraged to sign petitions/write letters/e-mails encouraging
RTA to maintain service and to attend a Public Meeting at Tremont Pointe
Community Room on Monday, April 4th; public opportunities for tile-making
for the mural project (many thanks to Metro North members, Angela and
Maria Guy, who have attended a number of public sessions and created
many beautiful tiles for the project); the Tremont West membership drive
in advance of the Annual Meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 19th –
and a representative of the Nominating Committee was to speak to us
encouraging prospective Board candidates to serve a term on the Tremont
West Board of Directors. For more information on our block club, check
out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Metro-NorthBlock-Club, or contact Chair, Sue Krosel—or Scott at Tremont West—
[email protected] or 216.575.0920 ext.106. Please join
us for our next business meeting on Tuesday, April 26th, 6:30pm, at
the ground floor meeting room of St. Michael Church.
North of Literary
The North of Literary (NOL) Block Club’s most recent meeting was
March 16th at Press Wine Bar. Co-chairs Sam Vozar and Mike Williams
thanked members for attending the NOL tile-making party Wednesday
Feb. 17th at Angelica Pozo’s studio. Participants had a great time. The
block club reviewed the Cleveland Marathon’s new route through NOL on
Sunday, May 15th (Abbey to W. 11th to University Rd to W. 10th Street
to Literary Road to W. 7th Street) – and following discussion voted to
provide a letter of support to the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. Special
Guest, Suzanne Meltzer, from the Friends of Tremont School provided an
update on the facility plans recommendation for the Tremont Montessori
School. She explained her group’s work to ensure that all options were
considered and that the new school will meet the needs of the Montessori
concept. Special guest Jocelynn Clemings from the Ohio Department of
Transportation (ODOT) provided an update on the inner belt bridge project.
Installation of noise barriers consisting of native, non-invasive vegetative
screening will begin within the next few weeks. The second bridge and
park are on schedule for completion by fall of 2016. The final landscaping
and portions of the towpath trail under the bridges will be completed by
early 2017. LerVal Elva, Tremont West Development Corporation Board
member, provided an overview of the duties and process for running for
open Board Member seats. There are seven open board seats, five of
which are 3 year terms and two of which are two year terms. The block
club discussed the upcoming public meeting to discuss potential changes
to RTA service in Tremont. The block club voted to submit a letter of
concern, and individual members were encouraged to send additional
letters/e-mails. Jill LeMieux and Chris Roy provided an update regarding
TWDC efforts to update and reinvigorate the Tremont Art Walk. For
more information on our block club and activities, please check out our
Facebook page, or contact Co-Chairs, Sam Vozar – samvozar@gmail.
com - and Mike Williams - [email protected] – or Community
Outreach Manager, Scott Rosenstein, at Tremont West at 216-575-0920

gathering, Tuesday, April 19th, 6:30pm at Press Wine Bar. We look
forward to seeing you!
South of Jefferson
The March meeting of the South of Jefferson Block Club was held on
Tuesday, March 8th at the Roosevelt Post 58 upstairs meeting room. Mark
Pratt, the new Safety Coordinator at TWDC, introduced himself to the block
club. Pratt encouraged residents to be active in reporting potential crimes
to him, the police and other resources such as the Facebook Tremont
Neighborhood Watch group. Pratt also updated the group about the rash
of 30-40 broken car windows in the neighborhood and told members to be
on the lookout for a dark colored Mazda with no rims that may be involved.
A resident asked Mark about the increase in large commercial trucks using
West 7th and he reported that the issue is being addressed. Mike Koski
followed with an update on a Court Watch regarding a carjacking that took
place just outside of the block club. Both assailants were given probation.
Mike also encouraged residents to report house break- ins to the Safety
Committee so they can have an accurate count of the incidents. Koski
also encouraged residents to check any home security cameras they
have to see if they have captured any images of the window smashers
mentioned by Pratt to help identify the perpetrators. The only order of
new business was a presentation by architect Michael Horton of a new
construction project slated for 2487/2489 West 7th Street and a request
for variances. The project combines two parcels spanning from West 7th
to West 6th and would create a single two story building with two homes,
a garage and parking spaces with access off of West 6th. Horton talked
about the exterior materials including brick, cedar siding and corten steel.
A resident asked if the nature of corten steel to bleed, or rust, was taken
into account and the architect suggested it was. Of the eight (8) variances
requested, all were met with no opposition, except the one regarding fence
distances from adjoining buildings and a nearby driveway. Issue was taken
with fences proposed to be built one foot (1’) from the neighbors existing
building interfering with the neighbors ability to maintain their home in
such a constricted space. The owner of the just north of the West 6th
parcel inquired about an existing fence that was damaged repeatedly by
vehicles pulling in/out of the old driveway. Horton agreed to remove the
fences proposed at one foot from the plans and assured that the fence
near driveway would be removed. After a vote the block club approved the
variance request support unanimously with stipulation that the fence issues
would be addressed Scott Rosenstein of TWDC gave a quick update on
proposed cuts to the footprint of RTA service that weaves through South
of Jefferson. A petition was circulated for those who did not want see a
diminished route of the one remaining bus that connects the neighborhood
to destinations including Metro Hospital, downtown and Ohio City. He also
made the block club aware of a public meeting regarding the issue to be
held at Tremont Pointe Community Room on Monday, April 4th from 6pm8pm. Nominations and election of officers for 2016 was postponed until the
April meeting due to time constraints. The meeting was then adjourned and
some members stayed to enjoy the hospitality of Post 58. For questions
about the block club and its activities, please contact Co-Chairs, Greg

convergence-continuum opens its
2016 season with the regional premiere
of the outrageous, in-your-face satire
BOOTYCANDY by Robert O’Hara, directed
by Terrence Spivey. BOOTYCANDY takes
a fearless and subversive look at attitudes
toward homosexuality in African-American
culture in a range of ribald (nudity alert),
disturbing, heartwarming and downright
hilarious scenes.
BOOTYCANDY, which completed a highly
successful off-Broadway run in 2014, is a
semi-autobiographical, raucous, hilarious
and decidedly un-politically-correct satire
that tells the story of Sutter, who is on an
outrageous odyssey from the 1970’s to the
present through his childhood home, his
church, dive bars and even a nursing home
(plus many more) in a wild series of scenes,
sermons and daring meta-theatrics that link
up to portray his growing up gay and black
in modern America.
BOOTYCANDY runs Thurs-Sat at 8 pm
through April16 at the Liminis Theater,
2438 Scranton Rd. Tickets are $15 general
admission, $12 seniors, $10 students.
