The Greater Manchester Chamber of
Commerce, in partnership with the New
Hampshire Women’s Initiative and the
New Hampshire Institute of Politics, was
pleased to host a successfull and sold
out event with all four members of New
Hampshire’s Congressional Delegation
and the Governor-elect on December 7
at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics
at Saint Anselm College. Governorelect Maggie Hassan, U.S. Senator Kelly
Ayotte, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, U.S.
Representative-elect Ann McLane Kuster,
and U.S. Representative-elect Carol SheaPorter all participated in the roundtable
discussion moderated by Chamber
President and CEO Robin Comstock.

January is the traditional beginning
of our legislative session. This session
presents a new beginning deeper and
more meaningful than the turning of
a calendar page from one year to the
next. This session, like the new year,
is a new beginning for many new
legislators from the Governors’ office, to
the Congressional delegation. The 2013
group will grapple with old issues and
approach unfolding issues as well. We
all hope for progress, and all wish our
representatives the best of luck in their
endeavors to meet the needs of the
citizens of the state of New Hampshire.

in our 1,history,
a female
Governor, and the first in the nation
female congressional delegation. New
Hampshire does things its way and won’t
be socially pressured to succumbing to
stereotypes of traditional expectations
of performance standards. If you ask
me, this is yet another example of New
Hampshire excellence for the rest of the
country to follow.
And at the same time, many of us are
asking what does all of this mean. At
our December “First In the Nation “
forum, where we officially welcomed
our new Governor and Congressional
delegation to their new roles, we asked
if this unprecedented historic event felt
as significant to them as it looks to us.
We wondered out loud if they each felt
the weight of being a role model for
young boys and girls and we probed
about how being all women will affect
the delegation as a whole. Will they work
better together we wondered, will they
be more cooperative, will it be easier
to be accomplished on behalf of the
states’ constituents? We also wondered
if their gender will affect their legislative
priorities and commitments -- will it be
different because they are all women?
And although men are never asked about
balancing fatherhood and work, we did
ask about their experience of combining
motherhood with politics, and their
approach to work-life balance.
We learned a lot about our legislators at
that forum. We learned that our elected
officials are terrific examples to both
boys and girls. We learned about their
sense of responsibility and dedication,
drive and commitment to residents of
our state that transcend gender and even
history. They are where they are to serve
all of us, and we should be honored, and
feel privileged to have such an incredible
group of individuals working on our
behalf.
As we planned our forum, we talked
about the fine lines and nuances of
the historic moment we sought to
celebrate versus the political agendas
and legislative priorities of each (we will
touch on policy and specific issues at our
upcoming events and programs). And,
at the same time, we each know that
in New Hampshire, relationships come
first, but the political, economic and
social agenda is how a candidate wins
the vote, and the ultimate responsibility,
regardless of gender, is to represent the
residents of our state, and cooperate with
other legislators and come to consensus
to resolve contemporary problems.
We hope that the team we have sent
to the State House and to our nation’s
Capitol will work together on the many
challenges before us, and to serve our
interests and needs to the best of their
ability throughout their tenure. We
will be here to support and encourage
our representatives in any way we can
throughout their tenure. We are grateful
for their spirit of stewardship, and all that
they sacrifice to serve us. And we are
proud to be the first in the nation first all
female Congressional delegation.
Although we want to resist unfair or
unreasonable expectations of this
extraordinary moment in time and
history, we really do think that the
excitement, enthusiasm and hope for our
delegation will translate into remarkable
accomplishments that they as a whole
will accomplish.

Bank of New Hampshire Supports the
YMCA of Strafford County
Bank of New Hampshire is proud to
support the YMCA of Strafford County
with a $20,000 cash donation and
$25,000 in tax credits towards the newly
opened facility’s capital campaign. The
$2 million, 27,500-square-foot facility at
35 Industrial Way in Rochester opened
its doors in January and since then has
been offering comprehensive programs
for the entire family to promote a
healthy and active lifestyle.
St. Mary’s Bank Recognized by SBA
St. Mary’s Bank has been recognized by
the U.S. Small Business Administration
for its outstanding achievement in
small business lending, including the
origination of the most SBA loans by
any credit union in New England. The
nation’s first credit union was named
the recipient of a 2012 Outstanding
Achievement Award for increased
participation with a focus on muchneeded smaller dollar amount business
loans.
