Susan is the Editor of Australian Smocking and Embroidery magazine published
quarterly by Country Bumpkin. although she trained in Fine arts, Susan has always had
a great love for textiles - embroidery in particular. Taught basic stitches as a child by her
mother, she has extended her knowledge with research and hands-on experience.
For almost 20 years, she has designed and stitched projects for Australian Smocking
and Embroidery and Inspirations magazines as well as various books including
Embroidered Flowers for Elizabeth.

learn the timeless art of smocking by creating
this dainty baby bishop or a sampler that can be
made into a picture or cushion. Perfect as a first
project, this pretty little dress uses the classic
colours of pink, white and blue with tiny touches
of green. It is smocked with a simple design that
uses only wave and cable stitches. dainty roses
decorate the lower edge of the smocking and
lace trims the edges of the smocked sleeves. The
neck is finished with binding and the dress closes
down the back with white buttons.

rhyme accompanies the picking of petals from
a daisy. Ideally, the last one is removed in
conjunction with ‘he loves me’! Three pale pink
daisies with detached petals are embroidered
onto silk satin with silk threads, capturing this
delighful verse forever.
stitches covered are back stitch, blanket stitch,
couching, detached chain, French knot, long and
short stitch, raised stem stitch, satin stitch, seed
stitch, stem stitch and straight stitch.
