It’s usual at this time of year in the middle of January for one of the biggest
issues facing locals in the Wakatipu to rear its ugly head. Avoiding the campervan
army and wayward tourist drivers. True to form there have been a few incidents on
our roads but as cycling grows in popularity the most common cause for grievance
this year on our roads and nationwide is between cyclist and vehicle. It seems every
week the news has another grim statistic to report. The good news for non cycling
locals is you are highly unlikely to come off second best in a car versus bike incident
but not such good news if you end up causing injury or death to a cyclist. That is a
heavy weight to live with on your shoulders.
In my opinion, the arguments for and against the rights of cyclists to use our roads are
beside the point. The fact is a cyclist can ride on the road, with no licence, no riding
skills and no idea. Even when a cyclist is in the wrong if an accident happens, there
are such grave consequences to the driver that it is just not worth arguing about.
Claiming the cyclist was riding too far out in the road two or three abreast does not
excuse a driver from not taking evasive action. A recent case where a Glenorchy
man found himself in court and disqualified from driving for intentionally driving into
a group of cyclists in a road rage incident is a lesson to everyone (Southland Times
7/1/14). Like some drivers, some cyclists are idiots. However it is up to the driver to
adjust their driving accordingly, not lose the plot and escalate a bad situation. Cycle
tourism will only increase and our roads will not drastically improve to accommodate
the extra traffic any time soon. In other words, the problem is not going to go away,
only get worse.
One thing we do have that might keep the number of cyclists on our roads in check
is the outstanding off-road options available in the Wakatipu. Why anyone would
prefer to ride down State Highway 6 when the Arrow/Gibbston cycleway is available
is beyond my comprehension. One review I read on Trip Advisor last week called the
track the best thing since the Great Wall of China. Lofty praise, but even if slightly
exaggerated, what such glowing reviews prove is we really do have an amazing
asset at our doorstep. Most of the tracks being built around the country as part of
the national cycleway are more like highways than mountainbike tracks, and surely
the appeal of such a unique experience will overtake the desire to simply peddle
from A to B down the road with cars roaring past at 100kph. But in the meantime,
awareness of cyclists on the road and a bit of patience is the best defence. When
faced with a dangerous driving charge, only one side is likely to face court and that
is the driver of the car.

Saturday night is for... drinking?
Dear LWB & lovely people of Queenstown, my whinge
is the one that is on everybody’s lips at the moment: the
new implementation of the liquor laws here in QT. We all
saw, participated and felt the furore of the joke that was the
recent QLDC’s ‘drinking survey” and as the powers that
be debated the outcome of the effect this will have on our
drinking culture here, I was simply amazed at how extreme
and pensive the air was around my favourite bars over the
weekend.
Now having lived here for a while like most of the guys
who love a good night out or those working in HOSPO,
we all know there is a “crackdown” of sorts on the Liquor
Laws here for underage drinking, intoxicated people or
generally those who go a bit too far this time of year and
I’ll be honest, I don’t hold any of the bars accountable
for having to take such extreme measures because hey, no
one wants to be the one who is made an example off by
“Liquor Licencing” during such a busy period. Taking this
into account though the fact that pretty much every bar in
town was refusing anyone who didn’t have either:
B) A passport (yeah I’m not taking mine out on a night if
I’m travelling the world as a backpacker) or
C) A form of ID that was taken at least a day ago (because
everyone identical the same on their overseas driving
licences and now according to various door securities
there is a now a massive “ID forgery business supplying the
worlds travellers with fake ID’s).
Now I’m not knocking any of the security firms or the bars
that employ them, but surely someone somewhere needs
to employ some common sense and think what is more
chaotic for the community at 11pm? Some tipsy revellers
that come here for good time and dance into the wee
hours and head over for a Ferg before bed? Or loads of
people getting pin-balled from a half empty bar to another
half empty bar getting more aggressive towards other
revellers before taking their frustrations out on the streets
of Queenstown?
Bar staff, keep your chin up! QLDC, get a grip on what’s
happening on our beautiful streets.
A) A Kiwi drivers licence (ok for locals I guess? )
Rocky
The Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act does bring a new
regime regarding alcohol and not just in our community as
this is national legislation, so you’d find exactly the same
situation in any other town or city. The legally required
forms of ID are either a NZ driving licence, a passport or
a Hospitality New Zealand card, with severe penalties for
minors being on a licensed premises without a parent or
legal guardian. From what you have described regarding
the security staff in the licensed premises, I would like
to congratulate them on the hard and diligent work they
undertook at the busiest and most vulnerable time of year.
It shows how the licensees are taking their responsibilities
seriously, not just in meeting the law, as this also enables
the staff to engage with customers too to ensure you
and others have a great night by not allowing intoxicated
patrons in the premises.

Noxious Weeds
As a long time proud resident of Fernhill I have getting
somewhat disheartened by the Broom situation which has
progressively moved over the past few years from public land
managed by the QLDC onto private properties. Mindful
that QLDC and our Mayor and councilors are always
encouraging residents to contact them with their concerns,
I therefore did so in what I naively thought would lead to
either some resolution or at least a coherent explanation.
The responses I have received include budget constraints,
brooms not a noxious weed, not enough resources and last
not least it’s a problem the QLDC having been discussing
with the ORC for a number of years .It appears that while
both councils are quite happy to collect our rates they both
consider the other should be doing the work of noxious
weed control and eradication in the urban areas. Surely if the
QLDC and the ORC and the worthies that are involved with
these organisations are quite happy to spend considerable
amounts of time and funds to remove Wilding pines surely
Broom which is a much bigger blight and health risk in the
urban area deserves some attention. As has been pointed
out Broom as a noxious weed is quite simply and easily
eradiated or at least controlled via spraying with a suitable
chemical by few staff. If this is correct, The question I would
ask of the QLDC is why can they appear to able to spend
considerable sums and resources scoping out and negotiate
big think projects like Convention Centres, hand out grants
left right and centre for spurious events, yet not attend to basic
services which ratepayers pay for and have an expectation to
have undertaken on their behalf.
Pete
Response from QLDC
QLDC allocates money each year to control broom
and other pest plants in reserves and a programme to
clear the broom above Fernhill Road in the Ben Lomond
Reserve began in November. Clearance by hand will be
followed up with a spraying programme. We prioritise
areas which pose a fire hazard or a risk to personal safety.
Broom is difficult to eradicate. The plants seed prolifically,
the seed is long lasting and can remain viable for many
years so control is an ongoing battle. Wilding conifers are
considered a greater threat as their seed is dispersed by the
wind to colonise large areas. Wilding conifers also compete
with and dominate native plants, whereas native plants can
eventually shade out broom.
Michele Poole,
Senior Communications Advisor
Note:
QLDC’s response wasn’t printed with the correct whinge above last week, we sincerely apologise for the mistake.

Are the main roads a safe place
for cyclists?
Were you duped?
Were you duped on the 20th by the mayor and
by the not so suprising price hikes by the local
supermarkets, or over this summer how our rates
have been used to patch roads instead of fully
resealing them, I was? There was fundraising in the
local pubs for a Miss Laurenson for a St Johns
tournament somewhere with some local prizes on
offer. This sounds great and was more than happy to
support the cause, but found out not too long after
‘donating’ to the cause that this person was infact
the mayors daughter and that Laurenson is infact her
married name. I thought the mayor was spreading
Christmas cheer, but needs to raise money when
she earns $130k ish and her husband also works for
the council too!? Please explain, I recall you doing
something similar this time last year?
I went into the local supermarket as I always do on
a Friday and was horrorfied to see the price of the
Central Otago eggs had increased in price by $1.75
& the fruit and vege seemed to be at recommended
retail pricing! Please explain?
Also unless the road being repaired is on a hill,
it has just been patched up. What is this about?
Is this a sign of the times with the current council,
just a patchwork? It looks ugly, especially along
Glenorchy Road and it was done after repainting
the road!
Concerned Ratepayer
Mayor Vanessa van Uden replies:
I am in public office, my children are not. I reserve
the right to be a parent as well as the Mayor. Like
any parent I was supporting my child’s own initiative
to fundraise to attend a St John’s event in Australia.
I also believe in the lesson of making your own way
in life and am proud of the way my children have
embraced this.
I have always used my own name -Vanessa van Uden
- in my professional and private life, and it’s well
known in this community that my children’s surname
is different.
