CASTLEWOOD COUNTRY CLUB • MEET, PLAY, RELAX, RETURN
“Zoot Suit Riot” Dinner Dance
It was a “blast from the past” as Castlewood Members donned Zoot Suits
and other styles of the early 1940’s and danced the Lindy Hop to the music
of the day. We even had a professional dance team on hand to
demo the dance steps. And, we loved the shoes!

FRONT COVER: Nothing epitomizes the Club’s slogan, “Meet, Play, Relax, Return”
better than a group of friends meeting after golf to swap a couple one-liners, have
a beer and relive some of their shots -- both good and bad. Pictured is the fabled
“Corner Crew” along with their wooden duck mascot.
BACK COVER: They’re men and women, boys and girls, young and mature -- but one
thing they have in common -- they are all Castlewood Club Champions for 2009!
“FORECASTER” is published monthly for distribution to Castlewood Country Club Members and their families under sponsorship of the Board of Directors.

Election Results
Results of the Castlewood Board of Directors’ election have been
announced. My thanks to the Membership for the continued
opportunity afforded me to serve the Club. Along with Carl
Marsh (a returning Board member) and Gary Schuitemaker, I
am energized to continue to establish policies, procedures and
controls that ensure our assets are secure and the will of the
Jim Clouser
Membership is enacted. Gary will be attending Board meetings
as an observer until January 2010 when he will assume departing Board member
Curt Anderson’s position. My thanks to those nominees who offered their services
but were not chosen. Curt Anderson deserves a large note of thanks for his efforts,
energy and contribution over his three-year term. I continue to admire those Members, like Curt, who have a full-time job owning and running a business, but also
unselfishly give their time to help the Club in its corporate governance process.
Looking Ahead
We have some continuing items we need to button up -- the Union negotiations and
the water system changes, to name two. We have some challenges that have yet to
be faced -- Phase III plans for the clubhouse, plans for the Alibi building, and the
remaining Golf Fund projects. Of course, we have our on-going challenges of improving operational efficiency, water conservation, Membership satisfaction, balancing
demands of various member groups and new member recruitment. Against the back
drop of a sputtering economy, we have our opportunities as a Board to be of service
to the Membership. We hopefully will meet or exceed your expectations.
Heads Up
• Our water strategy and conservation actions are paying off. Through the end of
July 2009, our Club is consuming less water (to the tune of 5 million gallons
of water less) than 2008 during the same time period. While I know there are
times when the courses either seem or are too wet, Jerry Olson and his team
are looking for every opportunity to conserve water while not risking the overall
health of our courses.
• We have become aware of several acts of vandalism in the parking lot across
the street from the Valley clubhouse. Jerry Olson and his staff are generating
ideas to improve the security of that lot in the short and long term. Until we can
evaluate and implement those plans, we ask that you take extra precautions
regarding locking your car and use discretion in the items you leave in your car.
In a difficult economy, this might be a precaution we extend beyond our Club
to our homes and businesses.
We continue to be thankful to our Members for supporting our Club.
Meet, Play, Relax, Return.

Rules of Golf
Last Month’s Question:
A player plays his second shot,
searches for his ball briefly and
then goes back and drops another
ball under stroke and distance.
Before he plays the dropped ball,
and within the five-minute search
period, the original ball is found.
Is the player required to continue
with the dropped ball?
Answer:
Yes. When the player dropped a
second ball with the intent to play
it under penalty of stroke and
distance, the original ball became
lost and he must continue with the
second ball.
This Month’s Question:
A player placed a ball when it
should have been dropped, or
dropped it when it should have
been placed. Before playing a
stroke, may the player lift the ball
without penalty and proceed correctly? What if the player plays the
ball without a correction?
GOLF TIP
For better putting, review the pace of your
putts. Most misses are caused by poor
speed. Putts that are hit too hard or too soft
are not normally holed. Practice rolling the
ball 12-16 inches past the hole. You’ll make
more of your first putts, and two putting will
be easy.
2010 Club Calendar
The Golf Committee is developing the 2010 Events Calendar. It
will be carefully constructed to allow for an appropriate combination of member open play and golf events. Our calendar has
been quite full with numerous events planned over the course
of a year. For next year, the overall number of events will be
examined, and possibly there will be more member open play
days in 2010. Of course, there will still be many member golf
John Hughes
Director of Golf
events scheduled and we hope that you participate as much
as possible. We always look forward to having full fields in all
of our golf events. The Board will be approving the final version of the calendar by
December and it will be available January 1st. Please check the website for inevitable
changes as the year goes on.
While You Are Playing...
I believe the most important part of golf etiquette is pace of play. And it’s very simple
to satisfy this requirement. Always keep up with the group ahead of you. Also, let
faster groups play through yours. Never allow your group (especially yourself) to
negatively impact players behind you. If you are in-position behind the group in front,

you will never be at fault. If a problem arises, consult the Golf Staff for resolution.
Remember:
1) Play without delay
2) Maintain your position
3) Don’t inconvenience players behind
4) If you do fall behind, catch up
5) Let faster players through
6) Let Golf Staff know about any groups ahead not abiding by these rules
Dress Code
We continue to have daily occurrences of dress code issues at the Club. Staff will
continue to enforce the Club’s established dress code. Collared shirts are required
and they must be tucked in. If a button-down shirt or women’s blouse is designed
to be un-tucked, this is permissible. Wearing denim or t-shirts is never allowed.
Thank you for the awareness of your Club rules.

Noonan/Berg Win 2009 Trophy Tournament
Ken Noonan
Jim Emmons Trophy
Steve Berg
Jack Johnson Trophy
Over the course of 12 months, between September 1st & October 31st, we conduct 10
men’s tournaments where participants earn points towards the Jim Emmons Trophy
(Gross Division) and the Jack Johnson Trophy (Net Division). The purpose of this system
is to recognize the player in each division who displays the most consistently good tournament play over a year’s time. Our 2008-2009 ‘tournament year’ is complete, and we
have identified two worthy recipients for both trophies through their exemplary play.
Ken Noonan earned 170 points and won the 2008-2009 Jim Emmons Trophy by a narrow margin over runner-up Rick Lindsey. Steve Berg won the 2008-2009 Jack Johnson
Trophy by earning 230 points, finishing well ahead of his competition, most closely
chased by runner-up Don Svedeman. This is the second time that Mr. Noonan has won
the Emmons Trophy. This year’s win is Mr. Berg’s first for the Johnson Trophy.
Previous year’s winners were:

Great Achievements
Most Improved
Our most improved
golfer for the month
of August was Kathleen Lawrence. She
is a very busy lady.
We don’t see her
often on Tuesdays,
Kathleen
but I believe she
Lawrence
and her husband
David go out a lot on weekends. We
know she has been working very hard
to improve her game and it looks like
she’s on the right track!
Charm Winner
Due to scheduling of the General Meeting
this month, the Charm Winner will be announced in the November Forecaster.
Chip-Ins
Congratulations to the ladies who
had chip-ins this month: Joan Porter,
Annette Denniston, Virginia Madden,
Sandy Holmes and Paula Lutz.
Tuesday Play Results
Please check the website for results from
regular play days.
Guest Day
We had a great time at our Guest Day on
August 25th. Mark came up with a new
game for us. It was called a Shamble.
Everyone on the team tees off and then
decides which drive they are going to
take. They all drop from there then hit
into the green, recording the top two
scores of the foursome. Everyone enjoyed the day and the fun format.

Return Delayed until
November 13th
Carlos Avalon
finished up his
cruise ship “gig”
with Celebrity
Cruise Lines
and was back
in the area getting his landlegs back and
getting ready to
return to Castlewood in early October.
Then he got the call.
Celebrity needed him to fill-in for the
pianist on another ship – and they
dangled a bit of a bonus in his face.
As much as we want him back, Castlewood gave him the go-ahead to delay
his return until November 13th. After
4 months at sea, Carlos says the last
thing he wanted to do was get back on
a ship but adds “I’m very grateful to
Jerry Olson and Tom Hunt for being
so understanding.” The good news
is Carlos will be here for the Holiday
Sing-a-Long on December 12th.
Meantime, we’re very pleased to announce that Jack Krouscup has agreed
to extend his tour of duty in the Hacienda Lounge to keep us entertained for
another few weeks.

Sheri works with
the Sacramento
First Tee Program
which teaches almost 3000 children the game of
golf. A surprise
result of this proSheri Erskine
gram was that as
the children learned the game of golf,
their math, reading and social skills
also improved.
Sheri has also had the privilege of working national tournaments for the USGA
as a walking rules official. This year,
she has worked three tournaments.
Last year Sheri worked the Men’s Open
at Torrey Pines! Rules officials have to
pay their own expenses, so the work is
definitely a labor of love.
Ruth Concannon: For the past fourteen
years, Ruth has organized the Christ-
mas Angel gift tree at Castlewood. This
program provides
gifts for the women and children of
Shepherd’s Gate,
Tri-Valley Haven,
and Stand (do not
Stand for abuse).
Ruth is also a volunteer at the Thrift
Ruth Concannon
Shop in Danville.
The Thrift Shop provides hundreds of
children’s books and stuffed animals
for the Castlewood Christmas program.
This past year Ruth collected almost
nine hundred gifts for the three facilities.
Stella Chang: Since 2003, Stella has
been a volunteer docent at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum. She completed
3½ years of docent training and passed
the qualifying exam to become an official
docent. Stella gives public gallery tours
for the museum’s permanent and special exhibitions. Stella’s love for Chinese

see in the competitive divisions in the
future.
A special thanks to the golf staff, Member volunteers and the Junior Golf Committee for supporting our tournament.
Bay Cities Action...
Congrats to the Castlewood Bay Cities Team who reclaimed first place after relinquishing the title to La Rinconada CC last
year. Castlewood “held the cup” in 2006 and 2007 before getting it back this year.
In a Bay Cities match play format, four teams of 2 compete head-to-head. There are a total of 36 points to be won. Three
points for each individual match and 3 points for a team best ball.
After going undefeated in league play, playoff wins against Saratoga CC (24.5 to 11.5) and Stanford (28.5 to 7.5) enabled
Castlewood to get into the championship match.
In the Saratoga playoff win, the locals were led
by Robbie Garcia, Ryan Niu and Taylor Bromley
who all contributed 3 points in their respective
matches.
Against Stanford, Mat Miller, Ryan Niu and
Taylor Bromley led Castlewood, each contributing 3 points, Mark Leong picked up 2.5 points
in his match.
The semifinal win against Stanford set the stage
for a showdown against the defending champs,
La Rinconada. The championship was a two-day

home and home match.
On Day 1 of the championship match,
Castlewood took a 19.5 to 16.5 advantage into the Day 2 match held at La
Rinconada. Leading the charge on Day
1 was Mac McClung who won all three
of his points. Jonny Baxter, Ryan Niu
and Kortnie Maxoutopoulis each contributed 2.5 points. Mark Leong and
Taylor Bromley accounted for 2 points
each.
On Day 2, the team rallied on the back
nine to take the title. The team of Mark
Leong and Taylor Bromley kicked in
7.5 out of 9 available points. Justin
Shotwell and Roshan Chekuri also
contributed big with 7.5 points in their
match. Ryan Niu contributed 2.5 points
in his match
Overall it was a great season for the
Juniors at Castlewood. For the sec-
ond year in a row the Bay Cities Team
opened up the roster to all juniors ages
12 and older. Our roster consisted of
46 junior players. With other junior
tournaments conflicting with Bay Cities
Matches, the team was able to leverage
the depth of junior talent we have at
Castlewood.

Tennis
Tennis in the News...
September was a busy month for the tennis department with no less than 18 USTA and Contra Costa
League matches. The tennis teams are faring well; the Men’s teams are a combined 15-8. The Women’s
teams are hovering around .500 and with a strong finish will end the season with a winning record. Even
more important, our teams are having so much fun and the camaraderie is fantastic.
We are now forming a “new player team” with practice either Thursday am or Friday am. We will also
schedule matches that will build skill and confidence to move on to the C and B teams. Please let Marsh,
Alan, Adri or Sandy know if you are interested in joining.
Marsh Riggs
Director of Tennis
We also completed our Men’s and Women’s out-of-town trips with both groups choosing Tahoe as their
destination.
The Girl’s High School Tennis team has begun its season and some of Castlewood’s own have made the grade. Incoming freshmen that tried out and made the team at Foothill are Alysia Goto and Sophia Angst along with sophomore Carly Regan. And
at Amador, freshman Jonelle Balducci has won a spot on the team.
The Labor Day “stay-on-round-robin” winners were Hazel Scott, Sandra Goto and Andy Hunt at 2.5; Debra Mallie, Renee Mahdavi and Chris Baxter at 3.0; and at 4.0 Janet Cotton and, in unprecedented fashion, Chris Baxter won again.
Members On Court
Castlewood members are moving up the ranks. Brenda Balducci has moved up to the 3.0 level. The USTA moved her up twice
before but injuries allowed her to appeal. This time Brenda is healthy and ready for the new challenge.
Brenda Dionne has been elevated to the 4.0 level. She has had undefeated league seasons 8 times dating back to 1998. Her
best record was the 2008 campaign in USTA Adult League 3.5 in which she went 11-2. A .850 winning percentage.
Also moving up the ranks to the USTA 4.0 level is Donna Colteaux. Especially effective in Mixed Doubles the past two seasons,
Donna has a 7-1 record. She also has incredible records in Combo Doubles in both the 6.5 and 7.5 levels. In two such sea-
16

sons Donna has posted 8-2 combined
records. Just as comfortable in singles,
Donna is one versatile player.
Watch out for Don Cotton who has also
been elevated to the USTA 4.0 rating. Incredibly, Don has put together 10 league
seasons with a winning percentage of
over .670. That means he was winning
twice as many matches as losing. Don
racked up 17 wins in just three league
seasons. And he has not been one who
shied away from competition playing in
Mixed, Adult, Combo and even USTA
sanctioned tournaments.
A few more Castlewood players are
scoring big. Mai Guerdat has had seven
league seasons with winning percentages over .670. Her best combined
seasons are 24-6!! Charissa McDonald
is 21-7 in the past three seasons in total
matches and has
never had a losing
record. Tad Adams
is lighting it up recently going 8-3 in
his past two seasons. Julia Cabral
has been moved to
the “A” team and
Donna Colteaux
is looking to regain
the form that allowed her to post an 18-4
record in the 2008 season. Julia is doing
just that with a 2-0 record in the 2009
Women’s Combo league. 2009 has been
a great year for Erin Iverson who has a
12-2 record. Wow! Kathy D’Onofrio has
an undefeated record in our 2009 combo
season 3-0. And Kathy is the queen of
the three set match, winning each time
after splitting sets. Team captain Dean
Edwards is also undefeated this season
going 2-0 while his team is in the playoff
hunt.

incredibly tough,” said Mike in his usual understated manner.
