TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN TIMES OF GLOBAL CRISIS:
WHAT IT TAKES TO MOVE
FROM FAMINE
TO FAVOR
BY JASON SCISCOE
Every day we hear about the global economic crisis
in the world. While enormous energy is being devoted to
understanding and fixing the problem, the most brilliant
business minds in the world still tell us that this recession
is not going away anytime soon. The global financial
meltdown is releasing an unstoppable tidal wave of
dramatic changes with devastating effects. When the
world economy shifts, it causes profound reactions in
how the world thinks about the government’s role in
business, imports and exports,
international banking, real estate
markets, foreign currency, and
even foreign policy. All of the
gloomy news shaping public
opinion gives us many reasons
to fear. Without a clear prophetic
word from God, the pressure in
the world today could easily destroy our faith. We must
hear what the Spirit has to say about the situation.
Fear is one of the greatest tools used to move large
masses of people in one way or another. We as Christians
must not allow ourselves to fall prey to these debilitating
thoughts and feelings. “Be not conformed to this world:
but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind”
(Romans 12:2).
As people of faith, we must face the global crisis with
the unique perspective that only God’s Spirit can give.
“God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power
and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV).
We must recognize these perilous times as the greatest
opportunity for world harvest that the church has ever
been given. Never has the need for the church been
greater than it is today.
The world is looking for leadership. All of the
seemingly unshakable things that people have trusted in
and relied upon for security and normalcy have now been
challenged and shaken. This
is our moment. The church
must step into that leadership
vacuum and take our place on
the stage of the world, but this
requires the church to adopt a
new leadership mentality.
During the time of global
famine in the days of the patriarch Jacob, God raised
up Joseph “to preserve life” in the world (Genesis 45:7
paraphrased). Though it was not at first easily discerned
by the people of God, He had a plan in place before
the famine began. The storehouses in Egypt were
overflowing with abundance in the time of global lack.
Due to the extraordinary leadership and divine wisdom
God gave to Joseph, the entire world came to Egypt
to buy corn. Pharaoh himself shifted all of his political
influence behind a man of God! A new era of global
FEAR is one of the greatest
tools used to move large
masses of people in one
way or another.
leadership had begun.
In our times, God has also
strategically placed men of God in
positions of influence. Though we
may not see the full manifestation
of it yet, God is using our present
global crisis as a means to rapidly
accelerate the church forward. The
mandate to reach the whole world
with the whole gospel still remains
the sole responsibility of the body of
Christ. I believe that God is presently
putting abundant resources into the
hands of pure, proven, Spirit-led
men that will meet both natural and
spiritual needs on a larger scale than
our generation has ever witnessed.
What better way to see a global
harvest than by giving the church
miraculous access to His abundant
storehouses? When the world hears
the church has the keys to the
storehouse, we will not have to go to
the ends of the earth to preach the
gospel. All the world will come to us.
The biblical global famine produced two new kinds of leadership,
and both were transformational.
The first was spiritual leadership in
a pagan world. God used Joseph to
manage a global catastrophe. Joseph
had divinely bestowed wisdom to
lead people to a place of life during
one of the world’s darkest times. In
providing for their physical needs, he
transformed the world community
and gave them hope again.
Joseph was brought on the stage
to reveal God’s eternal purpose
and His hidden plans for mankind.
Joseph solved problems no one else
could solve. So profound was the
work of God in his life to preserve
the hungry masses of the world that
Joseph’s name became synonymous
with the power of God. Egypt called
him Zaphnath-paaneah; translated,
it means “revealer of secrets” or
“God speaks and He lives.” Imagine
the magnitude of the entire world
referring to Joseph as the very voice
of God, proving both the existence
of God and His care for mankind.
In the years ahead, we will see
much more of this kind of leader
stepping out on the stage of the
world. Men and women of faith will
be raised up with wisdom from
God to help transform depressed
communities by providing practical
ways to meet the physical needs
of hurting people. As it was with
Joseph (whom God advanced
independently from his family), this
will be a sovereign work of grace that
flows freely outside the structural
confines of traditional religious
organizations.
This brings me to the second kind
of leadership: transitional leadership
inside the community of faith. The
family of Jacob was plagued by the
same fears and concerns that the rest
of the world felt. New leadership had
to emerge or they would not survive.
Jacob could take them no further.
The toxic emotions of fear, anxiety,
depression, and grief clouded his
mind and heart. When his ten sons
returned from Egypt with bad news,
his faith collapsed. His response was,
“All these things are against me.”
This is when Judah suddenly
emerged as the fresh face of
leadership. He became the single
driving force behind their transition
from famine to favor and from scarcity
to abundance. It was Judah who
spoke faith to his father about their
future and changed his perspective.
It was Judah who taught his brothers
what it meant to truly love and
care for each other—he was willing
to die for Benjamin. Finally, it was
Judah who led his father to a place
of letting go and trusting again. It
was no small achievement for Jacob
to entrust Benjamin to his care.
Judah’s leadership brought deep
transformation to the community of
faith that was essential for preparing
them to reconnect to Joseph and to
be a part of God’s plan.
The leadership vacuum in the
church today is evident by the lack
of clear direction and purpose. These
times demand fresh, new leaders to
emerge with current, God-inspired
ideas. The church must transform
into a community of kingdom
minded, selfless people who will
speak faith instead of fear, favor
instead of famine. As did Judah, we
must come out of the reactionary
mode and start leading positive
change.
The storehouses are open, but
the church must be repositioned in
the Spirit before God can trust us
with these resources. To escape this
famine, the church’s level of spiritual
transformation must supersede the
level of change in the world. The
unprecedented needs both in the
natural and spiritual require us all
to make this historic journey. By
speaking faith, taking care of each
other, and letting go of our past,
we will move courageously into our
long-awaited future. The hungry
world awaits. Are you ready to lead?
SHE SAID WHAT?
After a 12-hour day of traveling, we finally got in our hotel room. Julianna
plopped in the chair and said, “Mommy, where are we?” I said, “Honey, we’re in
a hotel room.” Julianna put her hands on her hips and said, a little exasperated,
“No, Mommy, what WORLD are we in?”

HIGHLIGHTS
AUSTRALIA
Our trip to Australia was marked with
powerful services, meeting new people,
experiencing Aussie culture, and enjoying
a little time of rest. We were in Australia
to celebrate a new church plant, HopeLive,
pastored by longtime friends, Richard and
Claudia Nassif. This friendship connection
was made when Jason preached in Sydney
back in 1993. It is so exciting to see how the
Lord has allowed the Nassifs to pursue their
passion to start a church. As you can see in
the photos, HopeLive is a thriving, growing
church full of hungry people seeking God.
In every service, dynamic, heartfelt
music and sincere worship ushered in the
presence of God. As we led the church
retreat and marriage seminar, the Lord
came with revelation and restoration for
both the lively new converts and the faithful
saints and leaders who helped to start the
church. Everyone spoke of the refreshing
Spirit that seemed to encapsulate the
entire week of events.
The retreat, Camp Live, was located in
the exquisite mountainous area, Stanwell
Tops. During one afternoon we had the
chance to go to Bald Hill Mountain and
watch the skydivers and parachutists. It
was thrilling to watch them soar like birds
off the mountain and over the ocean below.
One of our favorite days was a rest day
in which Jason and I got to stroll along
the Sydney harbor, viewing the famous
Sydney Opera House. Then we walked
through several acres of the beautiful
Royal Botanical Gardens. It was a peaceful,
perfect day that refreshed us and was
a wonderful way to start our week of
ministering in Australia.
Taking in the Royal Botanical
Garden....heaven must be like this!
What a rush to see them run and
jump and begin soaring like a bird!

NEW YORK MARRIAGE SEMINAR
One of the highlights of our trip to Bethel UPC in New York this year was teaching our marriage seminar, “Spiritual
Breakthroughs for Your Marriage.” The church was full of couples, old and young alike, who enjoyed the time investing
in each other. As individuals, couples, and a corporate church family, we laughed together, cried together, prayed
together and made plans for building the marriages we have always hoped for.

SINGAPORE, MALAYSIA
This momentous trip began with five days of teaching
at the Singapore School of the Spirit. There was great
hunger in the people as we taught on understanding what
takes place in the spirit world, angelic intervention and
intercessory prayer. We also taught on the importance
of having the revelation of Jesus and the need for
discernment. We must be transformed before we can
properly discern and address the spirit of antichrist.
On the final night we focused on the three areas of
transformation: personal, corporate and community.
Before the community can be transformed, the church
must change. Before the church can change individuals
must change.
The results of the meeting were great. Fourteen
received the Holy Spirit including one lady who was a
first-time guest. At least fourteen were baptized and
many more gave me testimonies that their lives were
changed.

Bishop Leow invited Missionary
John Wolfram and me to speak at the
first School of the Spirit in Malaysia.
Malaysia is 62% Muslim. The Muslim
celebration of Ramadan was going
on while we were there.
Early in the morning I was
awakened to the sounds of the
minarets broadcasting prayers in the
city. I carried a great burden there
for the churches and saints that they
may have a spiritual breakthrough
from the oppression. There were
tremendous
deliverances
and
breakthroughs in this meeting.

On Friday and Saturday I enjoyed

highlight for me was praying with
Luci, a beautiful Christian lady,
while God revealed more of Himself
to her and watching her make a
decision to be baptized. Her glowing
countenance in the water was worth
the whole trip.

TESTIMONIES
TRUE STORIES OF GOD’S HEALING AND DELIVERANCE
RACHEL COFFEY
At the age of twenty, I was involved in a car accident that injured
my back. From that time on I suffered from varying levels of pain and
weakness.
On December 23, 2008, I was
walking on an icy driveway and
began to slip. I twisted one way and
then the other in an effort to keep
myself from falling. I did not fall, but
I knew I had pulled something out of
alignment.
I woke up the next day in severe
pain. Throughout the day the pain
increased to the point that I was
unable to lift my right arm. I could
not stand up straight and I was
having difficulty breathing.
It was Christmas Eve and I had
begun the five-hour drive home to
Indiana. As I drove, I began to think
that I could not endure the pain any
longer. I would have turned back,
but I had promised to drop off
something to a friend at her family
Christmas gathering. I kept driving,
but kept thinking, “Where is the
nearest hospital?”
When I arrived at the Sciscoe
family Christmas gathering, someone
noticed how badly I was hurting
and suggested that we pray. I sat
in a chair, and the family gathered
around me to pray. As Jason Sciscoe
came toward me, the Lord revealed
to him my specific injury. You see, no
one had told him why I was in need
of prayer. He reached to my back
and touched the exact spot where
my pain was radiating from. When
he spoke the words, “You have a
bulging disk right here,” he had my
attention. I had been there before
and I knew that medical treatment
was necessary. Brother Sciscoe
asked me if I believed the Lord could
heal me, and without hesitation I said
yes. He laid his hand upon my head
and prayed in the name of Jesus. As
the family prayed, the pain instantly
left my body. The disk had moved
back into its proper place and the
tight muscle spasms surrounding it
were released. It felt like warm hands
were smoothing them out.
I raised my hands to the Lord to
thank Him for what He had done. I
stood and bent to touch the floor and
twisted and turned without a single
twinge. Jesus Christ had healed me
completely. Praise His holy name!

Since 2002 I have been dealing
with fibromyalgia. For the first
two years it had me in bed or in
a wheelchair. My pain level got
somewhat better when I got into the
church in 2004. I could start walking
with a walker and sometimes a
cane. Learning to trust in Jesus and
exercise my faith helped me so much,
but I still battled with relentless pain.
Several wonderful ministers had
prayed over me, and in each case
my symptoms got better. I believed
each one was the final healing from
the Lord, but after a short time the
pain would come back, putting me
back in bed or in the wheelchair.
Needless to say, I was saddened
and frustrated, but like Jacob I was
determined not to let go until God
blessed me.
(continued next page)
LIVING IN TRIUMPH | 7
After the New Year’s Eve service,
I shared this history with Jason
Sciscoe. He concurred with what the
doctors had shared with me about
fibromyalgia, that it is partially due
to mental and emotional trauma. Up
until then I had tried to deal with my
past issues of molestation, physical
abuse, abandonment, etc., through
pricey seminars, but I got only so far.
Brother Sciscoe said that when
the others had prayed over me that
only the symptoms were dealt with
and not the core issues that kept
causing the symptoms. He said that
God wanted to heal those issues,
then the symptoms would be healed
altogether. Brother Sciscoe asked,
“Are you ready for God to heal these
past issues?” and I said yes.
Now the Lord has done the final
work! In the past, I had never fully
stopped taking my medications when
others had prayed for me. I had cut
back on the medications, but the
pain always forced me back to full
dosages. Now, for the first time ever, I
am off all the medications I was taking
for the fibromyalgia, such a Neurontin,
Celebrex, and Oxycontin. I needed
to wean off of them due to the high
dosages. I have been medication free
since January 7, 2009!
Over the last week I have been
walking two miles each day with
my wife. Today I went on a long
hike up and down a mountain with
my wife and two daughters. God
is good! Thank you, Brother and
Sister Sciscoe, for all you do for the
kingdom of God. It has blessed me in
so many ways.

JOE BARAJAS
I was born with hearing problems.
During my first surgery, the doctor
inserted tubes into my ears that
were meant to aid my hearing,
but he inserted them the wrong
way. Instead of helping, this error
further damaged my ears and
caused tumors. To date I have had
nine surgeries, but every attempt
has brought no improvement. For
twenty years now, my ears have
leaked every night.
During the 2009 News Year’s Eve
service, Brother Sciscoe prayed for
me and I was instantly healed. I have
had no leaking since then or any of
my other symptoms. I am so happy
and thankful!

To hear His voice and to walk in His
purpose are my soul goals for 2009.
If I have learned anything out of the
brutal pain of 2008, it is the comfort
of knowing He will speak even in the
darkest hours. He harnesses our pain
and uses it as an agent of change.
We all are united by the trials and
losses that God entrusts to us, but
even more than that, we are united
by the hope of His promises to each
of us. His Word will not return void.
What He said He would do, He will
do. What He promised to do with
you, with your family, with your
ministry, with your provisions, He
will do.
In this New Year, I am propelled
forward by my faith that we are
entering the greatest days for the
church. As crisis abounds around
us, people are open and desperate
for changes and answers that will
bring them security. We know who
is in charge of it all. We trade our
fear for faith. Our sufferings and
shaping must not be in vain. We
must step forward. It is time to show
passionate, unconditional love and
the mercy of God to the hurting and
hungry. The time to be His hands and
feet is now.
God chose you and me to reap
this mighty endtime harvest. What
a compliment from heaven! At the
end of 2009, I pray that you will look
back and say, “I stayed connected to
His purpose. I lived every day in His
will. This was my most productive
year ever.”
It is our time.
