+ KNOW OUR CATHOLIC FAITH + THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
Jews are not collectively responsible for Jesus’ death
597 The historical complexity of Jesus’ trial is apparent in the Gospel accounts. The personal sin of
the participants (Judas, the Sanhedrin, Pilate) is known to God alone. Hence, we cannot lay
responsibility for the trial on the Jews in Jerusalem as a whole, despite the outcry of a manipulated
crowd and the global reproaches contained in the apostles’ calls to conversion after Pentecost. [Cf.
Mk 15:11; Acts 2:23, 36; 3:13-14; 4:10; 1 Thess 2:14-15]. Jesus himself, in forgiving them on the cross,
and Peter in following suit, both accept “the ignorance” of the Jews of Jerusalem and even of their
leaders. [Cf. Lk 23:24; Acts 3:17] Still less can we extend responsibility to other Jews of different times
and places, based merely on the crowd’s cry: “His blood be on us and on our children!” a formula for
ratifying a judicial sentence. [Mt 27:25; cf. Acts 5:28] As the Church declared at the Second Vatican
Council:
…[N]either all Jews indiscriminately at that time, nor Jews today, can be charged
with the crimes committed during his Passion….[T]he Jews should not be spoken
of as rejected or accursed as if this followed from holy Scripture. [NA 4]
MASS OF CONFIRMATION was held Sunday April 15, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. The Most Reverend Eusebio
Elizondo, Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle Presiding.

their families. A very special thank you to Bishop Eusebio Elizondo and our pastor Father Emmett Carroll, for
their prayers and spiritual guidance. We are grateful for the many blessings from our teachers, parents, and
sponsors. Special thanks to Pat Middleton and Neill Raymond for preparing the Confirmands for this day. We
also appreciate the hard work and talent of Patty Raymond, Ginna MacLeod, Mary Victoria Dombrowski, Joe

BIBLE STUDY "CATHOLICISM": The PBS series by
Father Robert Barron will be shown every Tuesday
morning from 9:45-11:30 am in the Chardin Room.
Episode IV “OUR TAINTED NATURE’S SOLITARY
BOAST: MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD”
In this episode, Father Barron masterfully correlates
the Catholic Faith’s testimony to the revelation of
God in Christ with the vivid practices of reverence
offered to his Mother. Mary is explained as “an ongoing presence, an actor in the life of the Church.”
Father Barron journeys to the humble remains of
Mary’s house in Nazareth, to the ruins of the
ancient city of Ephesus and to the great Marian
shrines of Lourdes and Guadalupe to explain the
Church’s teachings about Mary as the Mother of
God, the Immaculate Conception and the dogma of
the Assumption Any questions, call Sue & Bob

+ + THE SAINTS + MODELS OF CATHOLIC LIFE + + by Patrick Middleton
SAINT ERMINIO FILIPPO (RICHARD) PAMPURI
In his homily during the 1981 Beatification
Mass of Saint Erminio Filippo Pampuri, Blessed
Pope John Paul II said the following: “The brief, but
intense life, of Brother Richard Pampuri is a
stimulus for the entire People of God, but especially
so for youth, doctors and religious brothers and
sisters. He invites the youth of today, to live joyfully
and courageously in the Christian faith; to always
listen to the Word of God, generously follow the
teachings of Christ’s message
and give themselves to the
service of others. He appeals to
his colleagues, the doctors, to
responsibly carry out their
delicate art of healing; vivifying it
with Christian, human and
professional ideals, because
theirs is a real mission of service to others, of
fraternal charity and a real promotion of human life.
Brother Richard recommends to religious brothers
and sisters, especially those who quietly and
humbly go about their consecrated work in hospital
wards and other centers, to hold fast to the original
charism of their Institute in their lives, loving both
God and their neighbor who is in need.”
Erminio Filippo Pampuri was born the tenth of
eleven children on August 12, 1897 in Trivolzio,
Italy. After his mother died when he was only three
years old, his aunt took him into her home. His
father then died in 1907.
Erminio exemplified Christian values and piety
from a very early age, professing the Gospel,
engaging in charitable acts, praying often before
the Tabernacle in Eucharistic adoration, and
participating in the Eucharist. He prayed the Rosary
regularly, showing his devotion to Mary, and often
attended daily Mass.
Erminio actively participated in the St. Vincent
de Paul Society and Catholic Action, and was a
Third Order Franciscan. He coordinated many
activities for youth groups, farm workers and
others. If not for rather sensitive health concerns, he
likely would have sought out a vocation as a
missionary priest.
After graduating from Augustine’s College in
Pavia, Italy, Erminio entered the Medical Faculty of
Pavia University. From 1915 to 1920, he fought in
World War I, ultimately serving as an officer in the
Medical Corps. In 1921, having returned to medical
school, he graduated first in his class. In 1922, he
completed an internship in obstetrics and
gynecology. In 1923, he registered in general
practice and surgery at Pavia University.
It was not long before Erminio began applying
his Christian values to the practice of medicine,
showing generosity and charity by giving free
healthcare, medicine, clothing, food and blankets to
those who could not afford such. He traveled long
distances to see his patients, including to other
towns and districts. He came to be known as the
“holy doctor.”
The call to a religious vocation eventually led
to Erminio joining the Hospitaller Order of St. John
of God in 1927 and he made his profession of vows
in 1928. He took the name of Richard. Brother
Richard worked tirelessly and compassionately,
earning the respect of all those working and
attending St. John of God Brother’s Hospital in
Brescia where he worked. He exemplified charity
and virtue. He wrote the following in a letter to one
of his sisters (who was a missionary nun): “Pray that
neither self indulgence nor pride, nor any other evil
passion, prevent me from seeing in my patients
Jesus who suffers, and from healing and comforting
Him.”
In 1930, pleurisy struck Brother Richard as it
had when he was in the military. The illness
worsened to bronco-pneumonia from which he did
not recover. On May 1, 1930, Brother Richard
Pampuri died and was buried in the parish church
of Trivolzio in Pavia, Italy. He was thirty-three years
old. In the Church’s decree of his heroic virtue, he
was described as “leaving behind, the memory of a
doctor who knew how to transform his own
profession into a mission of charity; and a religious
brother who reproduced within himself, the charism
of a true son of St. John of God.” The requisite
miracles attributable to him were established by
1982 and he was canonized by Blessed Pope John
Paul II in 1989.
Saint Erminio Filippo (Richard) Pampuri’s
memorial is May 1.
