JEFFERSON FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Jefferson Foundation, as a Colorado 501c3 nonprofit
organization, is governed by a board of volunteer directors. These
community leaders set strategic direction for the Foundation,
provide legal and fiduciary oversight, and ensure that the
organization has resources adequate to meet its objectives. In
2012-2013, the Foundation benefited greatly from the expertise
and dedicated service of the following individuals:

met future engineers, teachers, chefs, motorcycle mechanics, astrophysicists,
attend school, there is consistency in students’ thoughtfulness and daring. Jeffco
students are driven, and they are planning bright futures.
When we think of our work at The Jefferson Foundation, inevitably we think of
these students. After all, The Jefferson Foundation was founded 30 years ago to
bridge public and private resources to ensure that all students are prepared for
success.
The dream of our founders was that when the Foundation grew up, it would have
a powerful impact on public education in Jefferson County. Throughout this
annual report, you will see that in 2012-2013, with the help of key partners and
investors, we did just that.
We are proud of our contributions to the students of Jeffco Public Schools, but
we continue to dream, just like our Founders. Just as our students are busily
planning for when they grow up, the Foundation is looking ahead with a strategic
approach to developing new projects, reimagining existing programs, and
attracting additional ideas and funding to benefit our students.
We invite you to be a part of our future!

The Jefferson Foundation was incorporated in
1983 by a group of Jefferson County business
and community leaders who wanted to bridge
public and private resources to strengthen local
education. Today, 30 years after its founding, the
Foundation works to further its mission to
support Jeffco Public Schools in preparing all
students for a successful future.
Jeffco Public Schools is the largest school district
in Colorado, covering 780 square miles and
serving more than 85,000 students in 154 schools
and programs. Jeffco Public Schools are among
the best in the country, and the district is regularly
recognized in the state and nationally for achieving
great outcomes with students and families.
Despite these successes, recent county-wide
increases in poverty—the greatest risk to a child’s
academic success—mean that the work of The
Jefferson Foundation is perhaps more important
now than ever.
As an independent nonprofit organization, The
Jefferson Foundation is strategically partnering
with many community organizations, businesses,
individuals and government agencies to develop
new educational resources. Our goal: to make
sure that every Jeffco student, regardless of background, graduates ready for college or career.
“This is an audacious, grandiose proposal. It envisions the creation
of an educational foundation… for the express purpose of having
a major impact on the quality of American education.”
- Kirk Brady, Jeffco School Board Member (1975-1994) and Founding Board Member of The Jefferson Foundation, 1983

from the Salazar Family Foundation, the Leon
Lowenstein Foundation and Schomp Automotive.
1,000,000

FUNDRAISING AT THE
JEFFERSON FOUNDATION
While year-round fundraising from corporations, grantmakers and individuals provides the bulk of The Jefferson Foundation’s annual budget,
two special events are perhaps the most well-known Jefferson Foundation fundraising activities:
THE CRYSTAL BALL GALA
The first Crystal Ball gala fundraiser was held in 1985, two years after the Foundation
got its start. In 2012, the gala hosted 450 guests, and awarded Bill Hanzlik the Crystal
Globe for Distinguished Service award. Hanzlik may be best known as a former
Denver Nuggets player and coach, but his work with his friend Ray Baker to found the
Gold Crown Foundation has made a lasting impact on Jeffco kids. The Gold Crown
Foundation provides youth sports and enrichment to more than 20,000 kids each year.
The event also recognizes the businesses and grantmakers who support the work of
the Foundation year-round, including FirstBank, Kaiser Permanente Colorado, DaVita,
Inc., Mile High United Way, the Salazar Family Foundation, Schomp Automotive,
Billings Investments, Caplan and Earnest, Target, Kroenke Sports and Entertainment,
Wells Fargo, Freeman Insurance West, Rothgerber, Johnson and Lyons, LLP, Gibson
Arnold and Associates, the Community First Foundation, CliftonLarsonAllen,
Comcast, and Kutak Rock.
Additional event sponsors included Pink Monkey Solutions Event Design, which
provided lounge-style seating and event draping, much to the delight of guests, and
the Public Education and Business Coalition, Red Rocks Community College, KBW
Graphic Design, Kelly and Chris Johnson, Betty Wetherbee and Westerra Credit Union.
THE LOVE OUR SCHOOLS LUNCHEON
The Love Our Schools Luncheon is the fastest-growing and most profitable Jefferson
Foundation fundraising event each year. The Fourth Annual Love Our Schools
Luncheon kicked off the Foundation’s 30th birthday year, announced three new collaborative projects and raised nearly
$30,000 to support the program’s work in Jeffco.
Long-time Jeffco citizens and supporters of Jeffco Public
Schools Steve and Anne Burkholder were recognized for
their volunteer efforts with the Norma Anderson Lifetime
Service Award. Steve is the former mayor of the City of
Lakewood and he and Anne co-founded the Parent-Child
Home Program Jeffco, a new early literacy program of The
Jefferson Foundation.
“We continue our involvement with Jefferson County Public
Schools because we truly believe that its effective educational
opportunities are the pathway to success for the young
5
people in our community,” said Anne Burkholder.
REVENUE AND EXPENSES OF
THE JEFFERSON FOUNDATION
The Jefferson Foundation must fundraise, each year, all funds used to support programs in Jeffco Public Schools. In addition, like most nonprofit
organizations, the Foundation relies on donations and other revenue to pay for its operations and fundraising activity.
The Foundation is very proud of its low overhead cost (the Foundation employs
only 3 FTE staff) and high percentage of program expenses to overall expense.
Full audits and IRS filings, outlining income and expenses from prior fiscal years,
can be viewed anytime at ColoradoGives.org by searching for “The Jefferson
Foundation.”
