Appealing to a
Diverse Audience
The LJHS Circuit Rider is beginning another
year of publication. News from our school
about our school, staff, and students will be
shared with you on a timely basis.
Any suggestions you as the student body or
staff may have would be appreciated. We
here on the Circuit Rider Staff would like to
expand our readership as much as possible,
and to do this we need to appeal to a diverse
audience of readers: students, staff, and parents. You can help us accomplish this by going on-line and reading all our issues and giving us your suggestions and feedback. Teachers can combine reading the latest edition of
the Circuit Rider with in-class reading and
writing activities.
Let us know what we can do to make this
newspaper appealing and useful to all.
Thanks, Circuit Rider Staff
Teachers Can Use
Circuit Rider for Lessons
In this very Circuit Rider, and many
more to come, there are educational
pages to help teachers instruct students.
Some of these are:
• For Language there is an essay
page that can be very helpful to
teachers. This can be a fun assignment to teach how to write.
• For Reading there are book reviews. This will give students and
teachers ideas for books to read.
• To keep students’ minds flowing
and thinking, there is a mindbender’s page.
These are just some examples of
helpful things teachers can use with
students in the classroom. Circuit Rider
this year will have many educational
things to work on.
LJHS Circuit Rider
Named For Lincoln
The LJHS Circuit Rider is named for our sixteenth President of the
United States, Abe Lincoln. Lincoln traveled the 18th Judicial Legal Circuit in the 1800’s
and tried cases in many of our local courthouses: Mt. Pulaski, Lincoln/Postville, Bloomington, Clinton, and others. Thus, he was named “The Circuit Rider,” which is what
our school newspaper has been called since its inception in the 1940’s.
We here on the LJHS Circuit Rider staff are proud to carry on the tradition of bringing news and facts and information to our student body at large.
Let’s keep our newspaper, which is an important part of Lincoln Junior High School
history, for many, many years to come. Thank you for reading and helping carry on
this important and historic LJHS Trojan Tradition!

Halloween, celebrated on October 31, is a mix of ancient Celtic practices, Catholic and Roman religious rituals and European folk traditions. These ancient practices
have blended together to form the holiday that we know today. Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and
paucity and life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration
and superstition. Halloween has long been thought of as a
day when the dead can return to the earth. To ward off
these ghosts, ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear
costumes. The Celtic holiday of Samhain, the Catholic Hallowmas period of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day and the
Roman festival of Feralia all influenced the modern holiday of
Halloween. In the 19th century, Halloween began to lose its
religious association, becoming a more secular communitybased children's holiday. Although the superstitions and beliefs surrounding Halloween may have evolved over the
years, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder,
people can still look forward to parades, costumes and sweet
treats to usher in the winter season.

Ask Kyle Column
Hey, LJHS students it is time for Circuit Rider. For the
Ask Kyle Column you may send in any questions that you
have for me (Kyle) regarding your life or any difficult
situations. Please bring them to Mrs. Workman’s room,
#314. We will put them in the next edition of the Circuit
Rider. The letters may have your name, or they can be
anonymous.
1. From Anonymous— My sister doesn’t seem to be all that bright.
She is really annoying, and she is really stupid sometimes. How
would you put up with her?
1. Answer— Well sometimes people think you should ignore her,
but I think you should spend some time with her and teach her
things you learn in school so she will be an early learner.
2. From Regan D.— How many licks does it take to get to the center
of a tootsie pop?
2. Answer— Well, some people said it takes 3 to 5 and even Mr. Owl
says 3. I personally think that is takes more than 5. But the world
may never know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a
tootsie pop.

This month…….
This month I am going to be reviewing the CD “Lars Attacks!” By
MC Lars. As all of you probably
know, I am a HUGE fan of MC
Lars, and if you don’t know who
Mc Lars is, you should look him
up. Now, this CD did not come
out until September 6th, but I got
the pleasure of getting it about 2
months early, because MC Lars
personally gave it to me. But,
back to the CD. This CD is really
good. All of the songs get stuck
in your head REALLY easily. My
favorite is either “Lars attacks” ,
“Annabel Lee R.I.P., which is actually a Edgar Allen Poe poem
with some extra parts put in. But
my top two are “Mike Russo Cut
your Hair” And “How to be an indie rapper”. All of the songs are
really good though. I have been a
supporter of MC Lars since 2006,
but this CD is no doubt my favorite. I really suggest you buy this
CD, on Amazon, iTunes, or his
website. www.mclars.com
I rate this a 5 out of 5 stars(:
If you like hip hope you will for
sure like this CD :)

Teacher Interviews: Promethean
Q1: What is your favorite feature on the board?
A: Boehme- “I like the ability to pull up information that isn’t in the book!”
A: Dahn—” There are so many! Do I have to pick one? Well, I love to be able to freeze the
screen, and to draw on whatever I want!”
A: Workman— “I like to be able to pull up additional information not in the book, video clips
for instance, that augment the lesson, and I like being able to highlight inside texts I want
to show in class, and, of course, I really like the clickers too! There are just too many
to name!”
Q2: Were you excited to get your board?
A: Boehme—”Yeah, at first I was kind of nervous, but then I got excited!”
A: Dahn– “Oh yes!”
A: Workman– “Definitely.”
Q3 : How long have you had it?
A: Boehme– “Since the end of last year.”
A: Dahn– “Since December!”
A: Workman– “December of last year.”
Q4 : Do your students like them?
A: All teachers : All agree that, yes, using the clickers is fun for sure.

5 Little Pumpkins
By Unknown
5 Little pumpkins sitting on a gate,
The first one said,
“Oh my, it’s getting late.”
The second one said,
“But we don’t care.”
The third one said,
“I see witches in the air.”
The fourth one said,
“Let’s run, and run, and run.”
The fifth one said,
“Get ready for some fun!”
Then whoosh went the wind,
And the lights went out,
And 5 little pumpkins rolled out of sight.
Spooks
By Sandra Liatsos
There’s a Goblin at my window,
A monster at my door.
The pumpkin at my table
Keeps smiling more and more.
There’s a ghost who haunts my bedroom,
A witch who’s face is green.
They used to be my family,
Till they dressed for Halloween.

Spooktacular Halloween Recipes
Hot Dog Mummies
One eleven ounce can of refrigerator breadsticks
One twelve pack of hot dogs
Yellow mustard
Instructions
1. For each mummy, separate one breadstick from the roll and use kitchen shears or a
knife to slice it in half lengthwise to create two thinner strips.
2. Wrap one strip at a time snugly around each hot dog. Depending on the size of the
hot dog, you might need both strips. Leave about half an inch of hot dog exposed for
the face area and continue wrapping the top of the hot dog.
3. Bake the mummies on a cookie sheet at 350 for 15 to 18 minutes or until the breadstick wrapping is golden brown.
4. Remove the mummies from the oven and let them cool for 5 minutes. Add yellow
mustard eyes just before serving. Makes 12 mummies.

Maximum Ride-The Angel
Experiment
This is a fast paced, action filled
series opener that both genders will
love. It is about 6 winged kids who
escape from the School, an illegal
lab that secretly works on combing
human and animal DNA. They are
trying to survive as mutant freaks in
the wilderness of the western of the
US. Follow them on their search for
the truth to their parents. I consider
it Action and Science Fiction.
Witch and Wizard
Another well written book by
James Patterson. It is Fantasy and
Post-Apocalyptic. Two teens, Whit
and Wisty Allgood, were living a
semi-normal life. However, the old
government was overthrown and
the New Order takes control. One
night, New Order troops invade the
Allgood house, calling Wisty and
Whit a witch and wizard, even
though they have never done anything “magical.” However, while in
prison, they develop some unusual
powers. Follow them as they try to
escape, find their parents, and save
the world. Can they fulfill an ancient prophecy, or will their plans
burn up in flames?
