THE YEAR IN REVIEW
Class of 1963 ~ 50th Reunion
A wonderful feeling of anticipation brought the St. Mary’s Institute class of 1963 to their 50th reunion
the weekend of October 11-13, 2013, along with the theme, “Together Again!”
An informal gathering was held on Friday, October 11th at Sam’s Steak and Seafood in Johnstown.
This allowed classmates, some of whom have never attended a reunion, a chance to catch up with old
friends.
On Saturday, October 12, fifty-five classmates and guests gathered at the Johnstown Holiday Inn for a
cocktail reception, and a 50th reunion booklet was presented to the classmates which highlighted photos of
past reunions, updated personal information and a memorial to the nine deceased classmates. A formal
welcome by Carmel Greco, and an invocation by classmate V. Rev. Thomas J. Krupa, VF, preceded dinner
and dancing to the oldies by DJ Sue Kaupelis.
A special tribute and silent prayer was offered in memory of the following deceased classmates: Judith
Conover Evers, Ann Clary Tortorello, Robert Bennison, Richard Petrill, Joseph Salamack, Carl Lucynski,
Edward Quinn, Mark Hughes and Patricia Sikorski Harris. Letters from classmates who were unable to
attend were read, and also a celebration toast was given by the “reunion queens”: Linda Nagiones Risch,
Carol Spakoski Gardiner, Ruth Boyle Castler and Elaine Kakareka Brennan. Senior class officers: Richard
Altieri, Mary Ann Taberski Johnson and Robert Malicki, each offered a few words on behalf of
the class. Class poet, Tom Corrado, read an original composition. Pictures, posters and other pieces of
memorabilia from days at SMI were also displayed in the room, as well as continuously running DVD’s
of past reunions.

~Sr. Agnes Clare & SMI~
Many SMI Alumni and non-alumni will remember Sr.
Agnes, as she spent 42 years ministering Amsterdam’s
Faith Formation Program. On August 25, 2013, St.
Mary’s Church celebrated Sr. Agnes and Sr. Margaret
Mary during Sunday Liturgy. A reception was held after
Mass at St. Mary’s Institute. Many gathered to join in
saying “thanks” and “we’ll miss you” during reception honoring both
Sisters. They have moved to Graymoor, a Franciscan spiritual life
center in Garrison, NY. Below are painted and chalk-drawn
pictures, all done by Sr. Agnes herself. If you ever had the pleasure of
visiting Sr. Agnes in her office at SMI, one could not help but smile
when looking at these beautifully drawn pictures. Whether
they were done in chalk, hand painted or sketched, you
could feel the joy, compassion, and love that Sr. Agnes put
in with each stroke of her gifted hands.

SMI: Inspiring Minds, Unlocking Potential Since 1880
Dear Alumni and Friends of SMI,
Since 1880, St. Mary’s Institute has been a most special place for children to unlock their God-given gifts
and unleash their amazing potential. Woven in Amsterdam’s beautiful fabric for over 130 years, we have
provided so many children with teachable moments and memorable experiences rooted in faith traditions and
focused on the future. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, we remember, celebrate, and look forward to our
continued accomplishments. Most certainly, our proudest accomplishments are you, our alumni. Our past,
present, and future graduates are our lasting contribution to society.
This past summer, I had the pleasure of attending the St. Mary’s and Bishop Scully joint reunion held here
at the school, one of the first in our storied history. Hundreds of alum gathered together on our beautifully
landscaped grounds up on the hill. I never tire of hearing you regale me with stories of your time at our
school. Listening to you recount with stunning detail stories of shenanigans in the hallways, memorable
teachers, unauthorized trips to the Scully gully, and uneasy visits to the principal’s office, I am reminded of
the lasting impression and memories the faculty and I undoubtedly form with our present-day students. It
humbles me to think that we are the people they will tell stories about one day. And it leaves me pondering
what unforgettable impact we will have on their lives.
Throughout the pages of this newsletter, please relive the exciting highlights that occurred within our community during the 2013 calendar year. As you journey with us over the past year, join me in celebrating our
endeavors and advancements in our Catholic identity, our curriculum, our technology, our students and
graduates, our community, and in our fiscal management. From our spring musical to our establishment of a
sports booster club, from a special retirement to a $10,000 award-winning project, learn more about the exciting things happening at your alma mater.
As you reminisce of your own yesteryear, be proud and know that St. Mary’s Institute is blossoming with a
promising future, a future you can remain an important part of. With the generous support of alumni like you,
I know we can continue to foster an environment that facilitates the spiritual and academic development of
each of our students. Your recurring and dependable contributions affords us the means to provide an education that prepares our graduates for the modern world while keeping Catholic education affordable and accessible to all who desire to send their children to our beloved SMI.
As you read on, I hope you will engage again the wonderful partnership that we have with all of you, our
alumni and friends of our extended community. We are grateful for your support and ask that you keep the
students, staff and families of St. Mary’s Institute in your prayers. May God continue to bless you and watch
over you in 2014.
Most sincerely,
Mr. Giovanni Virgiglio, Jr.
Principal

Our 8th grade students, under the enthusiastic and creative direction of our art teacher Mrs. Christine Potter,
shot and edited a video titled Big Bad Bullies. The silent film, complete with exaggerated motions and word
dialog panels in between scenes, shows the importance of taking a stand against bullying. All it takes is one
person to stand up to bullies, stop hurting others, and set an example for others to follow just as Jesus taught
us to do. The video ends with the entire student body in the gymnasium taking the pledge to stop bullying.

On Friday, November 8, 2013, the SMI Home & School
Association hosted a patriotic assembly in recognition of
Veterans Day in the schools gymnasium . The students,
faculty, staff and parent volunteers wanted to proudly honor
the men and women who have sacrificed for the freedoms that
we enjoy in the United States of America. We wish to thank
all of the veterans and military personnel for their service,
dedication and courage.
During the assembly, the SMI Chorus performed songs
that illustrated and inspired patriotism. The PAV Honor
Guard and SMI students who are members of the Cub Scouts,
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts also took part in the assembly.
Guest speaker was Michael Murphy a 1984 SMI alumnae
who is now a retired Lieutenant from the U.S. Coast Guard.
We cordially invited all military service members, veterans, family and friends of our SMI students to join us for this
inspiring program. All of our special guests were greeted and
personally escorted to an area of reserved seating.
All of our SMI students donated $1.00 for a non-uniform
day. Students dressed in red, white and blue to show their
patriotic pride. The monies collected were used to fund a
brick paver to be installed in the Veterans Memorial located
in Veterans Park on Locust Avenue. A check for the paver
was presented to Rob von Hasseln, City Historian, during the
assembly.

now, I’m adjusting and becoming
another St. Louisianan!! Many
thanks for sending the Newsletter to

Since I have recently been diagnosed with lung cancer, this could
be my last hurrah on earth. I like the
Alumni Angel alumni gift selection,
but will go one more $1.00. Enjoy
the bulletin every year-but, boy, the
old timers are fading away fast.
Continued good fortune to SMI.
Also, please note that Miss Lengel

We celebrated our 61st
anniversary reunion at the
Raindancer on October 5th at noon.
There were not many
affirmative responses, but those who
attended were very glad to be together and catch up on
exchanging news with everyone
gathered. I stay busy with various
organizations (volunteering) and
play bridge as often as possible!
P.S. Sorry I’m belated-thanks for
the reminder notice.

Ben and I celebrated our 54th
anniversary in June and saw two
more grandchildren graduate from
college. Our granddaughter Lauren
graduated from DePauw University
in Indiana with a degree in Biology.
She has her first job and apartment
in Indianapolis. Her brother, Scott,
graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He is
still searching for the fortunate company that will give him his first job.
That is 4 of the 11 grandchildren out
of college. We have spent a wonderful summer at Galway Lake and will
go to Rochester next week to be at
Ben’s 55th reunion from the U of R
in Rochester. Then back to Chicago
for the holidays to head south to
Florida as soon as we have clear
travel weather in January. Easy to
keep in touch I am at [email protected]. Ben has been
clear of cancer-January will be his
5th year so that makes us very
happy. Be happy and stay healthy
everyone!

Really enjoyed playing golf with
several high school classmates
@ Amsterdam Muni. Mike

declared sand baggers supreme.
Great time was enjoyed by all.

much.

I’d like to make this donation in
honor of Sister Jacqueline Johnas,
our 7th and 8th grade Literature and
Language Arts teacher. She made
stories like “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi”
come alive and honed our writing
skills despite our (at least, my) best
efforts to dampen her enthusiasm
with adolescent uber-coolness. If
anyone knows where this master
teacher is these days, I’d love to
contact her with my thanks for all
she did for me back in 1969-71.

A nice surprise in the mailbox today the SMI Alumni
20
Newsletter. Congratulations to all at
SMI for literally “keeping the faith”.
Looks like the classes of 1974-1981
were lost for last year’s fund drive...so I
hope we make it up this year. The Harrington family has been well served by
SMI. I make this
donations in memory of our mother,
Anne (Casey) Harrington who passed
away on January 1, 2012. God Bless!

News regarding fellow classmates.
Class of “83”, Michael Dowling lives
on the outskirt of Atlanta Georgia. Paul
Czelusniak was here in
Amsterdam, as of 2011. I have not seen
him since. Thomas Dowling (“86”)
lives in the Latham area. Karen Norton
did not graduate from St. Mary’s in
1977. She was the class of ‘81. Unfortunately, you have numerous mistakes
but I would need a lot more paper to
correct them. Paul St. Louis also was
not “77”.
-Sean Dufresne
Thank you Sean for the updates and
corrections. Unfortunately, when cutting & pasting articles from one year to
the next, mistakes can be made. I honestly appreciate it when Alumni notify
me of errors, as that is the only way to
make corrections for the upcoming
newsletter.

A hearty Hi from Johnnie Rapillo to my beloved St. Mary’s Institute
graduation class of 1938!
I continue to drive and enjoy my Subaru Outback, but I gave up flying recently because of high operating costs, and having remained current in my
annual FAA physical exam, I logged over 7,360 pleasureable flying hours
during my career.
I’m 92 years of age and my wife Lucille recently celebrated her 90th birthday. We enjoy every day living in good health, mobility, and stamina; we’re
thankful and grateful for the blessings we receive from our Heavenly Host.
With love, best wishes, and God’s Blessing,
Johnnie ’39 & Lucille Rapillo
It is a shame that SMI isn’t a 1st through 12th grade school these days. It
was a great period in my life before WWll, when there was baseball & basketball teams on a Catholic League on Eastern New York State.
Drastic changes in Amsterdam since the war has caused SMI, to be a
school with only 1st through 8th grades. Apparently, a religious school this
size is needed in my home town.
Staff, keep up the good work on the Alumni Newsletter. I look forward to
receiving it every year.
Sincerely,
William J. McCune ‘41
Dianne & I just celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary.
It snowed the night before, but the morning was crystal clear with
a blue sky and sunlight dancing off the snow..at 10 degrees below
zero..Fahrenheit. Three days after Christmas, the church was filled
with trees, shining lights, and poinsettias. With family and friends,
we promised many things, on that day in Troy, NY..and meant
them. It was the beginning. An RPI degree & Army ROTC led to
Armor Officer Basic at Fort Knox, KY. After nine moves in nine years, sixteen different addresses, two short tours, and three children later (Laura, James, John), we
spent a year in Fort Leavenworth Kansas for Command & General Staff College (‘73’74) where pottery began for Dianne. Then on to West Point to teach in the Physics
Department. Those four years at USMA while living at Stewart in Newburgh were
busy and life changing. Church, family, friends, Cursillo, Marriage Encounter, Life
in the Spirit, TEC, PhD, and camping in the Adirondacks filled our lives and our
memories. Pottery and spirituality intertwined in the studio and in retreats throughout
the region. We renewed our wedding vows, and then off to Germany to close out the
‘70’s. The 1980’s and ‘90’s found us at West Point in the Electrical Engineering then
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. It was a time of children
leaving the nest, off to college, into jobs, new families with sons– and daughters-inlaw, and the first of eventually eleven grandchildren! There was a year at the National Defense University in DC, a year sabbatical split between Politechnika Lodzka
in Poland and Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Dianne completed two degrees, and
Dan was Head of EE & CS at USMA. Busy and fruitful years. Many good things
were completed, and in 1999 we retired from active duty after 34 years and 5 months.
(Whatever happened to that original ROTC 6-month active duty commitment?) We
left our hilltop home and moved south and near water! (Southwest Michigan near
Lake Michigan!) At Western Michigan University, I had the opportunity of several
assignments (Dean of Engineering, Provost, Interim President, and now Vice President for Research with a three year tour in between at the National Science Foundation in DC)> Dianne completed another degree in Theological
Studies and a Spiritual Direction Course while in DC, a year-long
chaplaincy hospital internship, and is now a Board Certified Chaplain for Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
It is a time of service. Best Wish to all in 2014.
-Brigadier General (RET) Daniel Litynski ‘60 & wife Dianne

Class Letters continued:
Dear Jeanette,
I was a member of the class of 1959. In October of 2012, my wife Mary and I went to Rome to tour the city and to attend the
Canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha. I was at Auriesville during a Saturday last summer (2012) and we became aware of many
persons from the Mohawk Valley that were planning to also go to Rome. Perhaps you have seen other trip logs-but I offer our
trip experiences in case you want to share the information with other newsletter readers. (via Email 4/2013)
Mary and I were privileged to be able to attend the Canonization Mass at the Vatican for Saint Kateri Tekakwitha during October
2012. We went to Italy on a nine day trip with a part of the parish of North American Martyrs Church of Auburn, MA. They and
their pastor have been praying for and anticipating the sainthood event for many recent years. In 2013, I presented a slide show of
our pilgrimage to an Italian Club in Amherst, MA, and in Springfield, MA. (via SMI Alumni News Envelope 7/2013)
-Dave & Mary Conley
*Below are brief inserts from Dave & Mary’s trip log. You may request a copy of the full 10 page journal which includes
details of the lives of our seven newest 2012 Saints and a chronological history of key Roman buildings by emailing Dave at
[email protected].
WEDNESDAY 10/17/2012 After our usual Wednesday morning Mass at Saint John the Evangelist Church in Agawam October
17, 2012, we drove to Auburn MA to join a group of 20 others that had chartered a bus to drive us to JFK Airport in New York.
Three men in our group were priests: Father John Gee - pastor of North American Martyrs' Church in Auburn, Father Joseph Nally
assigned currently to a clergy support ministry in the Worcester Diocese (and soon to be reassigned as a pastor of a Worcester area
church) and Father Hector Perez - pastor of Saint Stephen's Church in Pensacola FL. (Back home we have listened to some of Father Hector's Sunday sermons on his church's website.)
The bus got us to the airport with plenty of time for the 3 hours check-in requirement for overseas flights. Apparently if you arrive
and get your final in-house document less than 3 hours before the departure time, the airline can charge you an extra fee. The
check-in method of inserting your passport (opened to your photograph page) into a machine and then typing in your e-ticket number was new to us. With that done you are given a boarding pass by the machine so you can next proceed to a person who processes
your checked luggage. During our long wait in the airport we got acquainted with some of the fellow passengers. One couple (Tom
and Cathy Andrade) had lived and worked in Westfield MA during an early part of their careers. Our airplane seats happened to be
the last 2 on the right side of an Airbus A333.
THURSDAY 10/18/2012 As we started the long, gradual descent towards Fiumicino Airport I could clearly see the features of the
island of Corsica. When we had first arrived over the far western parts of Europe, we could not see land due to a heavy amount of
cloud cover. After getting our luggage we easily passed by a very nonchalant Italian customs agent to wait near an exit door for our
tour guide for the next several days. Guide Alessandra had chosen for her marker-in-the-sky a stuffed toy cow. She led us (cow
held high) to the bus that would take us into Rome. Approaching the metropolitan area we got our first look at the Tiber River and
the frenetic, busyness known as the Eternal City.
We had been told verbally by our guide and had read in the tour guides that if you go to Rome you will see at least one Gypsy asking for money or trying to sell items to you. When we stepped off of the bus at the basilica we were immediately in the presence of
an ethnic group that I had not seen since I was a youngster in Amsterdam NY 60 years ago. In a city and area that was 99.99%
white --- it became common knowledge when a caravan of strangers was about to pass through the valley. The male sellers of
shawls, weird silly putty type curiosities, etc. and the women (some with young babies clasped to their hips with one arm) of all
ages asking for money were there doing their routine.
We gathered at that church built around 1660 for a Mass to be presided by Father Hector - assisted by Father John and
Father Joseph. After a wonderful, nostalgic Mass said in Latin we walked to the overlook of Lake Albano to admire the scenic
countryside and view across the lake still another place that has been continuously occupied for many centuries. Supper was in a
town square restaurant after a session of wine tasting. The very delicious wines were all from grapes grown and processed in this
part of Italy. The red wine and the local strawberry liqueur were the most memorable to Dave. A typically good pasta based
meal was topped off by a tiramisu dessert. Before I left the states - my Italian barber in Agawam had told me that tiramisu was
going to be one of the highlights of the trip. It was! After the meal we were entertained by a local woman who dressed in an
attractive peasant dress and sang local songs aided by her guitar. Our bus brought back into Rome.
FRIDAY 10/19/2012 After a sumptuous breakfast selection at the hotel we rode to Castel Sant' Angelo. This multi use round
shaped fort was quite unique in structure. The design provided for an interior ramp that allowed persons and horses to travel from
the bottom level to the top level by climbing the fortified grade inside the defensive wall. The place has been used as a fort, a
mausoleum, a prison, a place for executions, a refuge and a museum. The current name is in reference to Saint Michael the
Archangel. He reportedly appeared at the site at the end of a plague in 590. The top level provides great views of the Tiber River,
parts of Rome and of Vatican City.
Next we rode to the Colosseum, to Vittorio Emmanuelle's Monument in Piazza Venezia and to the Archbasilica of Saint John
Lateran. Saint John's has been the Cathedral of the Bishop of Rome since 324. It includes a chair in the left side of the chancel in
which the Pope sits to make any important message about faith and morals for the Roman Catholic Christian Church. The obelisk
outside the archbasilica is the largest standing obelisk in the world. While at the Colosseum we walked along the various levels
of the building that are available to the public. While walking and riding in the area of the Colosseum we saw the
Arch of Constantine, parts of the ancient Roman Forum and the remains of a very high aqueduct.

Conley trip log continued:
SATURDAY 10/20/2012 We took a bus ride to Piazza del Popolo to visit and to attend Mass at Santa Maria del Popolo Church.
Father John presided and Father Joseph and Father Hector assisted. Four of the Native American women in the tour group went to
the altar rail before Communion to chant the Our Father prayer in their native language. The tour group then walked past the piazza
obelisk and down Via de Corso and Via della Croce to arrive at the Spanish Steps area. While there we went into the Trinita del
Monti church at the top of the steps. A recent edict by Roman authorities made it a crime to eat anything while standing or sitting
on the Spanish Steps. That favorite pastime by tourists was one of the memorable scenes in the movie Roman Holiday. We did not
see any food vendors in the area and thus we also did not see any policemen issuing tickets. From the Spanish Steps we walked to
the Trevi Fountain. The fountain area was packed full of tourists. Continuing our tour we walked to the Pantheon and then to Piazza
Navona.
SUNDAY 10/21/2012 Today we would be a part of the Vatican Mass in Saint Peter's Square presided by Pope Benedict XVI and
witnesses to the canonization ceremony of 7 new saints. We got up early to get a bus ride to the security gate for the square. While
we were entering the square some Native Americans could be heard chanting and playing their drums. They were celebrating an
event that completes a process that started in 1943 when Kateri Tekawitha was declared venerable by Pope Pius XII. Kateri was
beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II. Mary and I decided to sit slightly north of the square's obelisk. We had decent views of the
whole ceremony and we were seated among groups from American Indian tribes, from Germany and from the Philippines. The
music and singing during the opening procession for the Papal Mass were very impressive and inspiring. The people of the Auburn
church (North American Martyrs) including its pastor Father John Gee have been praying to God for over 20 years that Kateri
would be declared a saint. They and many others including the very large number of Native Americans that were there must have
been pleased. In 1950 when I was 9, I was asked to portray Kateri's village chief during a children's pageant at Auriesville Shrine in
New York State. Thus I have been fully aware of the Lily of the Mohawks for 60+ years.
MONDAY 10/22/2012 Today we were to visit the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the inside of Saint Peter's Basilica the building that includes the burial place of Jesus Christ's closest friend on earth - Saint Peter. Because we were in a tour group
led by an approved, authorized travel guide we by-passed the long general public line to get into the Vatican Museums. However
that was the only benefit because once we got inside most display areas were pretty much shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of
others in the galleries. Where we went through wide hallways or smaller size galleries the scene was similar to a slow moving assembly line. Seeing the paintings, statues, tapestries and numerous artifacts was worth the effort to come to Rome. Being in the
Sistine Chapel was memorable and will allow us to have a better knowledge and perspective of what the room is like when we see
photographs of future papal enclaves that are held there. When we exited the Sistine Chapel our guide told us that we were right
next to the Pope's personal living area.
TUESDAY 10/23/2012 Today we checked out of Nova Domus to go by bus to Sorrento Italy. On the way we rode up the steep
road to Monte Cassino to tour the Benedictine Monastery there. . All of the Masses on this trip were solemn and memorable but
thinking about the loss of life and the needless physical loss of the abbey's structure was a very sad moment for Dave. The chapel
and the saints' graves had miraculously escaped damage despite the total destruction of the main altar immediately above those areas during the aerial bombing done by the Allies during World War II. I remember that my 8th grade teacher Sister John Maria discussed in class some of her personal (very strong) viewpoints regarding American history. In her opinion there were anti-Catholic
members of the military who carpet bombed Monte Cassino despite being told repeatedly by various good sources that there were
no German soldiers at the site. She also held the belief that southern Japan was specifically targeted for the dropping of 2 atomic
bombs because that area included a large concentration of Roman Catholics. We will all know the whole truth some day. One thing
that was a surprise is that even though the abbey has been fully restored - the place currently has only a couple dozen monks and
the site is currently owned and operated primarily as a tourist site by the Italian government.
WEDNESDAY 10/24/2012 Following breakfast we took a bus to the town dock for a ferry ride to the Island of Capri. Once there
we got onto smaller boats for a ride around the island. In the process we saw the Faraglioni (80-100 meter high spires of stone in
the sea near the coast), a sizable natural arch in a cliff wall and Grotta Azzurra (the famous Blue Grotto). Two of the women in our
tour group were wearing bathing suits and did an activity that can be chosen by adventurous travelers. After the boat captain
stopped their boat near where there is a gap in the cliff wall along the shore, they jumped out of the boat. Then they swam to the
other side of the opening while their boat proceeded around the wall so the women could climb back into the boat. To see the Blue
Grotto one must transfer to an even smaller boat and lay down along the floor of the boat until the boat is inside of the cave. The
cave opening is very close to the water surface and the boat rower also has to get almost prone to proceed into the grotto. Dave
went in, Mary declined.
THURSDAY 10/25/2012 Following an early breakfast and an early departure from Sorrento, we rode north to Fiumicino Airport.
While getting close to our destination the traffic became very slow due to an accident further up the main highway. The bus driver
left that road and used local secondary roads to get us to our destination. The new route took us right past the ruins of Ostia Antica.
Once inside the airport area we stopped at a total of 3 terminals. Some people were going back home after first going through
France or going through Ireland. After saying goodbye to Alessandra we made our way through the usual checkpoints to get to our
plane's gate. The flight back home was as long and tedious as we had anticipated. Going through USA customs was a pillar to post
to pillar type process. Back on a hired bus that met us at JFK Airport, we headed back to MA in unusually easy traffic for late afternoon. We said goodbye to each other back in Auburn. I drove our car back to Agawam for a late evening arrival back home. Once
home we found everything OK but we learned then that Hurricane Sandy was soon due in the northeast region.
*Dave recently visited SMI as I was working on this newsletter. Sadly, he informed me that his wife Mary passed away of a
sudden heart attack on December 31, 2013. Thank you Dave, for sharing you and your wife’s experience to Rome with all of
our Alumni readers.

From the Alumni desk:
This school year has been a very active one for the students and parents at SMI. Between academics, Liturgical
celebrations, concerts, sports, social events, and fundraisers, our school is blessed to be among one of the thriving Diocesan
schools. We owe this to you, our SMI alumni supporters, St. Mary’s, St. Stanislaus, St. Stephen’s and Our Lady of Mount
Carmel Parish supporters, alumni from Bishop Scully High School, along with many family and friends that come out to
support our functions. Without you, SMI would not be as vibrant as it is today.
It is with high hopes as your Alumni Director, that as you have finished reading through your Alumni Newsletter, it
has brought back many cherished memories for you, along with the pride of being a part of a school that has been in existence
for 133 years! I’ve been told that “word of mouth” is the best advertisement there is. Please consider sharing with us your
experiences at SMI and BSHS, so we can pass along to our current and future alumni, just how rewarding an education at
SMI can be.
Now a question for our Alumni readers. I recently received an out of state phone call from a women who purchased
a water color painting at a yard sale. She described this painting as being done around the early 1900’s, with flowers, lilies
and roses with leaves and bulbs in an oval frame. On the back of the painting the name Mary Kreigh is printed, along with St.
Mary’s Institute. She would like to return the painting to the place it originated from. I have started some research, but have
yet to come across any information. So I’m reaching out to you for some help. Does anyone remember having an art class at
SMI with water color paints and painting flowers, or what teacher may have taught such a class? If it is indeed from our
beloved school, we will proudly hang it for all to view. I look forward to hearing your feedback.
Sincerely,
Jeanette Constantine
