Budding Bayley House
filmmaker Kurt Zylan was
named an equal winner
of the Best Digital Story in
the Youth Documentary
Section at the 2014 Bayside
Film Festival in August.
Kurt’s film, titled ‘Kurt’s World,’ explored
how he would like the world to operate
and told of his desire to be a space
tourist.
This is the fourth time Bayley House
has participated in the Digital Story
Project. The digital stories were created
over a four week period in May and are
composed of a series of digital images
which tell a story about a topic of the
filmmakers own choice.
Kurt, Natalie Listokin and Sarah
Woodward participated in the project.
Sarah demonstrated her journalistic side
by interviewing her literacy instructor,
whilst Natalie shared her interest in
food and healthy eating. All three were
assisted by Bayley House Instructor,
Paul Masterson and Jason Heller. Jason
is a Melbourne based filmmaker who
helped them develop their ideas,
construct their script and film the stories.
The project is a wonderful learning
experience and is an extension of our
computing and Digital Art & Media
programs.

Welcome to our new look
Bayley Bulletin. We hope

Everyone I speak to seems to be of
one mind; 2014 is flying by quickly.
We have been busy over the past
few months and I can report on
two significant achievements.
The first is our new house in
Blackwood Avenue, Mentone.
Residents and staff of the former
Helen Schutt House in Aspendale
relocated to their new home on
31 July. Everyone has settled in
well and the house was officially
opened on 9 September.
T he second item of note is
that we are now ready for the
commencement of works on the
refurbishment of the Glassborow
Wing at the rear of 52 Middle
Crescent. The first stage, which
involves some structural work
to the Dining Room on Level 1,
will commence during the
upcoming term holidays.
I am aware that a number of you
will have attended the fabulous
Bayley Bird’s concert on 26 June.
The concert was a fitting tribute to
celebrate the 40th anniversary of
the Bayley Birds who have so
generously supported our work
over this lengthy period.
Unfortunately the celebrations were
somewhat short lived when we
learned soon after of the untimely
death of Carolyn Vaughan, one of
the original Bayley Birds.
As I write this report I am also
reflecting on the death of our
long term client, Ms Sally Ball.
Sally commenced at Bayley House
in 1963 as a five year old and
touched everyone who came into
contact with her. I know the whole
Bayley House team will miss Sally
and our thoughts certainly go
out to her mother Sybil, sister
Jenny and brother Peter.

The Hon. Louise Asher MP
attended Bayley House on
Wednesday 27 August to
announce plans for a $2.2
million major redevelopment
of the Day Centre at Middle
Crescent.
Ms Asher and Bayside Mayor, Laurie Evans
reviewed the project plans before joining
CEO Bruce Salvin, Board President Angus
Graham OAM and architect Paul Hede
on a tour of Bayley House.
The buildings at the Day Centre are over
45 years old and have not been renovated
since the late 1970s. The redevelopment
received a green light to proceed when
the Bayside City Council made a decision

last year to grant a 15 year lease at a
‘peppercorn’ rental on the land at the rear
of the property on which many of the
buildings stand.
In speaking at morning tea after the tour
Ms Asher said “The demand for high quality
disability services in the Bayside area is
increasing and will only continue to do so
with the roll out of the National Disability
Scheme (NDIS).” She congratulated Bayley
House on the wonderful support they
provide to clients and was confident that
the redevelopment would assist us to better
meet the needs of individuals with high
support requirements whilst also enabling
us to expand and diversify our services. Ms
Asher has visited Bayley House on several
occasions and was once again impressed
with the genuine warmth and cheerful
atmosphere as she toured the Day Centre.
The long awaited redevelopment is the
culmination of 18 months of planning and
consultation involving staff and the Project
Control Group. It will take place in three
stages; the first of which is on track to be
completed in the September term break
and will involve an update of the facilities
on the upper floor. The second phase will
create a purpose built space for those who
require high support and the final stage will
result in improved art and bathroom areas.
Overall the layout and design of the
redevelopment will ensure there are
additional program spaces, modern
and well-equipped bathroom facilities,
a training kitchen and a new art area.
The redevelopment will improve the
support Bayley House is able to provide
to clients both now and into the future.

Blackwood Avenue
Bayley House officially opened its newest residential property on Tuesday 9 September.
More than 70 people were present to witness The Hon. Lorraine Wreford MP, Member for
Mordialloc declare the house officially open. Guests included residents and their families,
local MPs, representatives from the Department of Human Services and supporters.
Costing over $1 million to construct, the
house, which is located in Blackwood
Avenue in Mentone, has been purpose
built and is the culmination of five years
of hard work and commitment from
many people.
The design incorporates large defined
living zones which cater to the needs
of the residents, yet enable staff to assist
them with ease, privacy and dignity. The
bedrooms are large and most have an
ensuite bathroom with special disabled

access and overhead tracking and
support systems. There is an abundance
of natural light, generous spaces and a
sense of comfort and security. Communal
areas encourage greater social interaction
but there are other areas that residents
can retreat
to on their own if they wish.
The six residents, Mindy, Sarah, Mark,
Stephanie, Tim and Simone moved into
their new house at the end of July.
They have settled in well and are now
enjoying living in a home that
offers best practice in supported
accommodation. All were present at
the opening and proudly showed
off their new home.
Mr David Cole, a parent of one of the
residents, acted as MC and oversaw
the proceedings at the opening.
David commented on how delighted
the family members were with the
new house and praised the staff for
the wonderful support they offer the

need for suitable accommodation options
for residents as they age. Bruce Salvin, CEO
discussed the building process, providing
insight into the different factors that had
to be taken into consideration during
the project. Both thanked the builders,
Cellstruct, and the architects for the quality
of the work they did.
The Blackwood Avenue house replaces
Helen Schutt House in Aspendale.
Ownership of this house was transferred
to Bayley House in July 2009 by the Helen
Schutt House Association. The house
was almost 30 years old and no longer
adequately met the needs of the residents.
As part of the arrangement Bayley House
agreed to replace it with a new home that
would better meet the current and future
needs of the residents.
The land in Mentone was purchased
in November 2009 and construction
commenced in late 2013.

The house took approximately six months
to build and Bayley House is delighted
with the result, as were all the guests at the
opening. They commented on the great
size of the bedrooms, the lovely cathedral
ceilings, the bright and airy kitchen and the
variety of living spaces.
As many of the residents of Helen Schutt
House were aging and had specific needs,
it was crucial the design of the new house
incorporated key elements that supported
their requirements. After a lengthy
consultation process the team at Hede
Architects, under the direction of
Paul Hede, created a design which met
all these requirements and more.

KEEPING
TELSTRA GREEN
For almost six months Bayley House has
been helping keep the Telstra Operations
Centre in Clayton green. Every three weeks a
team of six clients travel to the Telstra office
to water over 135 plants. The task takes
about two hours. The staff are friendly and
welcoming and everyone enjoys the visit.
Thank you to Brenton Francis for
coordinating the project and Tom Whitelaw
for constructing the purpose built trolley
we use which comes complete with
on-board pump.

Bayley’s Great Chase
For the past seven years Bayley House has been involved in
The Great Chase which is conducted by Greyhound Racing
Victoria (GRV). Community groups supporting people with a
disability are invited to attend their local greyhound racing
club where they are partnered with a greyhound that will
run on their behalf throughout a series of races. This year,
for the first time ever, our allocated greyhound Rinash,
won through to the grand-final.
One Sunday in mid-August residents and staff from our Roxburgh, Leonard Street and
Lonsdale Avenue houses ventured to Sandown Greyhound Racing Club to watch the heats
of The Great Chase. They were treated to a buffet lunch before cheering Rinash onto victory.
To our delight Rinash finished in fine form and collected the winner’s cheque of $500 for
Bayley House.
A few days later he repeated the feat, easily winning the semi-final at Warragul; this
time earning $1,000 for Bayley House. Next stop…the grand-final at The Meadows in
Broadmeadows on 3 September.
A small but vocal group attended The Meadows to cheer on Rinash in the final. He had
drawn Box 1 and after posting a fast semi-final time was definitely in with a chance. Hopes
were high for a good result but alas, it was not to be. The race was close with Rinash finishing
fourth, 0.09 sec out of the placings. It was a great effort and a thrill for all who watched.
Prior to the final each participating community group was presented with a framed
certificate and two generous donations; $1,000 from GRV and $1,000 from Craig Wilson on
behalf of his parents, Eric and Jan who were great supporters of people with a disability.
Thank you to everyone at Greyhound Racing Victoria, Sandown Greyhound Racing Club
and The Meadows for all your effort organising The Great Chase events. We had a great
time and will be back next year.

Carolyn Vaughan
passed away
at the start of
August. She
was a dedicated
member of the
Bayley Birds for
40 years, and through them was
committed to Bayley House. She
was actively involved in all their
fundraising activities and her touch
was often the key to their events
being so successful. Carolyn had
also worked on a casual basis in the
Art program and was well liked by
clients and staff alike. She will be
greatly missed.
Sally Ball
4.4.57 – 26.8.14
One of our
longest standing
clients, Sally
Ball passed
away recently
aged 57. Sally
commenced at
the Bayley House School in 1963
and last year received the 50 year
Client Recognition Award; one of
only five clients to do so. Her bubbly
personality, strong will and cheeky
sense of humour won her many
friends amongst staff and clients.
Sally will be greatly missed as she
was such a large part of Bayley
House's history and a real character
in her own right.
Bayley Birds celebrate
40 years in style
The Bayley Birds Birthday cake.
On 26 June the Bayley Birds celebrated turning 40 in true
style with a spectacular ‘birthday bash’ concert at Robert
Sanderson Hall. More than 300 people attended the concert
which featured performances from Bayley House’s own
AllStars Theatre Company.
Each year the AllStars perform at the
Christmas Concert so this was a fitting
way to celebrate the Bayley Birds reaching
the 40 year milestone.
After 'popping' out of a birthday cake,
the ‘Birds’ were introduced to the crowd
before sitting down to enjoy the show
which had been designed just for them.
Members of the AllStars sang and danced
to tunes from the last four decades which
included many of the ‘Birds’ favourite songs
from previous concerts. Elvis, the Beatles,
John Farnham, Patrick Swayze and Pink
all made a guest appearance.
The concert finished on a high with a
fabulous rendition of the song, 'Happy'
which had everyone singing and
clapping. It was a great finale indeed.
After the concert, the Bayley Birds
presented Angus Graham OAM, President
of the Board with a cheque for $25,000,
bringing the total they have raised to
just under $532,000. In return, they were
each presented with a gift to thank and
congratulate them on the contribution
they have made to Bayley House.

FATHER’S DAY
STALL
This year’s Family & Friends Father’s Day
stall was one of the biggest. More than
110 gifts were available for clients to
purchase for their father or special male
carer. This year the stall was held on the
Friday 5 September and the hall was abuzz
with noise as clients selected from the range
of beautifully wrapped gifts. Thank you to
everyone who provided gifts or helped
on the day.

Representatives from all three charities attended the morning tea. As part of the proceedings
Bayley House CEO Bruce Salvin presented Michael with a framed Certificate of Thanks on
behalf of the charities. In reply, Michael presented each charity with a cheque for $10,000.
This is the first disbursement from the Fund and a great way to start the relationship between
all the organisations.
Morgans is committed to directing a percentage of their annual profits into the Antaeus
Charitable Fund. In addition to this, they will host a range of fundraising functions and
encourage their clients to make a philanthropic gift to the Fund. Each year the three
charities will receive a donation to assist them to deliver vital services and programs.
