6th GRADE INVENTION CONVENTION!
On May 27th, the 6th grade students hosted the 6th Grade Invention Convention. The Invention Convention
is an event that gives students an opportunity to demonstrate the skills of problem solving, thinking
critically, experimenting and working with data. Students are encouraged to identify a need or solve a
problem by following the same steps that an inventor would follow. After a need is identified, students are
directed to use problem solving and creative thinking skills to invent a product or process that would fill the
need or overcome a problem. After completion of their invention/innovation, students participate in the
invention convention to present their inventions.

NOTES FROM OUR NURSE
SURVIVING POLLEN SEASON
It is that time of year for seasonal allergies or “hay fever”. Airborne pollens and
mold spores are outdoor allergens that trigger symptoms during the spring and fall.
Symptoms include sneezing, congestion, a runny nose, itching in the nose, roof of
the mouth, throat, eyes and ears. Pollens from trees, grasses and low growing
weeds have small, light, dry pollens that are easily transported by the wind. These
are the pollens that trigger allergy symptoms.
Trees start to pollinate from late February through May. This may fluctuate depending upon
what part of the country you live in. Grasses follow next beginning to pollinate in May and
continuing to mid-July. Weeds usually pollinate in late summer and early fall.
Mold spores float in the air like pollen and are present throughout the year in many states.
Unlike pollens, molds do not have a specific season, but are affected by weather conditions
such as wind, rain or temperature. Outdoor mold spores begin to appear after the spring
thaw and reach their peak in July in warmer states and in October in colder states.
TIPS TO SURVIVE POLLEN SEASON


Minimize early morning activity when the greatest pollen is emitted – after dew dries
after sunrise to late morning.
Keep your car windows closed when traveling.

Try to stay indoors when the pollen count or humidity is reported to be high, and on
windy days when dust and pollen are blown about.

Take allergy medications prescribed by your allergist/doctor regularly, in the
recommended dosage

Don’t take more medication than recommended

Don’t mow lawns or be around freshly cut grass; mowing stirs up pollens and molds

Don’t rake leaves, as this also stirs up molds

Don’t hang sheets out to dry. Pollens and molds may collect on them.

Don’t grow too many, or overwater, indoor plants if you are allergic to mold. Wet soil
encourages mold growth.

Remove clothes you’ve worn outside and shower to remove pollen from your skin and
hair.
