weekends throughout the academic year. The
school offers two breaks during which the school
closes:
- Winter Break (2 weeks)
- Spring Break (2 weeks)
Students are not permitted to remain on campus during
these breaks. Accommodation arrangements are available
through the school or with a CISS host family.

Performing Arts Programme
Residence
The Balmoral Hall Residence community is a small but integral extension of the School. The Residence
is a bright, spacious apartment building accommodating up to 65 students in 22 apartment-style
suites. Each suite houses up to 4 girls and is fully furnished with it’s own full bathroom. All rooms have
telephone and internet access (girls may bring their own laptops from home). Students can enjoy
a spacious common room with TVs, DVDs, computers and a Playstation/gaming station. Students
must bring with them their own bed linens and covers/ blankets. The students are under the constant
care and supervision of the Director of Residence and her support staff. Every effort has been made
to create a homelike environment in the Residence where the students can live and learn, grow
emotionally and physically to develop and attain their full potential as young women. All boarding
girls also receive a recreational membership at the Winnipeg Winter Club, a full service athletic facility.

Academic Curriculum
Balmoral Hall School provides its students with a comprehensive course of studies that facilitates the
achievement of individual potential and inspires a love of learning. Balmoral Hall offers a unique
curriculum delivery based on methodologies developed specifically tailored to how a girl’s mind
leans, thus preparing young women for successful post-secondary education and future careers.
According to studies by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS), girls in a single-sex learning
environment are more likely to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (referred
to as STEM fields). These are traditionally areas of the workforce that have been dominated by men.
The STEAM curriculum encourage each student to design a rigorous programme compatible with her
abilities, interests and goals. Students have the opportunity to learn new languages and to express
their ideas creatively through the visual and performing arts.

Balmoral Hall School has recently introduced an IBM laptop initiative. The school supplies its students
with laptops for use in the classrooms for study, research and work in addition to using the school’s
computer labs. Purchase of an individual computer is not required, although residence students are
permitted to bring laptop computers from home for personal use in the residence.

ESL/EAL
Balmoral Hall School offers ESL / EAL (English as a Second Language / English as an Additional
Language) support for international students with varying levels of English proficiency. All students
receive a placement test upon arrival. Students applying into senior level grades (10-12) should
possess an intermediate or higher level in order to participate in regular academic classes with limited
ESL/EAL support. Girls receive personalized instruction from an English teacher and extra help is
available from ESL/EAL paraprofessional. Students with lower level English will spend more time
in an ESL/EAL environment focusing on language acquisition, with participation in regular classes
where possible. In order for an international student to be placed in regular English with no ESL/EAL
support, she must have achieved a 550 TOEFL score (79-80 iBT).
Additional charges will be applied for this programme and billed directly to the student’s personal school account.

Participation in sports and extra-curricular activities is a highly encouraged component of the
academic life. The school strives to instill a curiosity and love of learning that will last a lifetime. Each
girl is encouraged to try a range of extra-curricular activities from athletics to art, debating to dancing,
thereby reinforcing community values, so that in seeking better things, she is also doing better things.

All residence students at Balmoral Hall School become members of the Winnipeg Winter Club, a full
service athletic facility which includes: Hockey and Skating, Tennis, Squash, Badminton, a Fitness
Centre, Lap Pool, Five-Pin Bowling, Aerobics Studio, Pilates and Yoga, Spinning, Pool Tables and more.
The entire school – staff and students - are divided into four groups called Houses which compete
against each other during the year in athletics, debating, and various spirited competitions. The
four Houses, Glen Gairn, Craig Gowan, Ballater and Braemar were derived from places surrounding
Balmoral Castle, the private residence of the British Sovereign
