year old Tyler Buxbaum is
a great tennis player.
But that is just one of the reasons he got to
hold the U.S. Open trophy one recent Friday
afternoon at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Mount Sinai is the official medical
provider for the U.S. Open and U.S. Tennis
Association (USTA), which kicked off this
past August 26th. The USTA conducted a
“Trophy Tour” of the Men’s and Women’s
U.S. Open trophies with patients at Mount
Sinai on Fri., Aug. 9th.
The opportunity was a unique one as the
trophies, created by Tiffany, are usually under
lock-and-key at the Tennis Hall of Fame in
Newport, Rhode Island.
First to handle the vaunted trophy at Mount
Sinai was Tyler.
While it is true that the trophies he carried
have been held also by the likes of Roger
Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams,
Tyler is a champion in his own right.
“He’s a one-in-a-million miracle,” said his
mother, Dawn Buxbaum.
Tyler was born prematurely after doctors
discovered that he had a critical aortic
stenosis while in utero. An aortic stenosis
is the narrowing of the aortic valve, which
pumps blood in the heart. A narrowed valve
can inhibit blood flow.
Many medical professionals with whom
she consulted did not think Tyler would
survive over sixteen years ago.
They explained to Buxbaum that her
options were to get an abortion, or have her
newborn endure a battery of heart operations.
She opted to see if a novel new procedure
offered at Mount Sinai would work.
As soon as Tyler, who was born
prematurely, arrived, he underwent a cardiac
catheterization, in which doctors inserted a
tube in his valve to make sure blood could
properly flow to and from the heart. It was
a new procedure at the time, with uncertain
results.

will improve a patient’s condition most of the
time, the yielded results will often vary. In
some cases, it is enough to save someone’s
life, but not enough to give them normal

recently had his lower left leg amputated, and
was undertaking physical rehabilitation when
Tyler walked into the room with the trophies.

Tyler’s own favorite player is Federer.
“I get my playing style from him,” he
explained. “People hate to play me because I
extend my matches.”
Danny Mollica was in his room recovering
from knee surgery when Tyler came in
bearing the trophies. He couldn’t pass the
opportunity to grasp one in his arms.
“For me?” he asked with a smile. “I want
to see this puppy.”
Mollica, who is legally blind, has never
played tennis, but enjoys pool and bowling.
This is the second operation he has had
on his knee.
“They had to chop it up again.”
Mollica hopes to “run around, like always,”
when he is fully recovered.
Tyler saw his trophy-bearing as an
opportunity to spread hope.
“It feels good to see the other patients.
I know some aren’t as fortunate as me,
[because] I have no restrictions. Maybe they
can see what they can aspire to be,” in terms
of recovery, said the teen.
Tyler knows his heart condition will
be something he deals with, but it is not
something he dwells on.
“It’s a part of me, but it doesn’t define me.”

ichael Díaz, also known as
his alter ego Juan Bago, is
on tour.
And he is relying on quarter waters, the
popular, candy-colored juice drinks, to get
him through.
Díaz is on a bodega tour of the United
States.
So far, he has been to Miami and Houston
filming Bodega Chat, a web series hosted
by Brisk—the purveyors of Brisk Iced Tea,
which is a mainstay in bodegas across New
York City.
In his travels, he meets and interviews local
artists—and gets them to open up about their
tried and trusted local bodegas.
In far-flung reaches of the country, Díaz
is an ambassador of Washington Heights,
while he simultaneously learns more about
the various iterations of the bodega that exist
throughout the country.
“It’s an eye-opener,” he said. “It’s a twoway street. I’m bringing awareness and I’m
getting awareness.”
Some locales, like Chicago, have their
venerable corner stores, for example, while
Houstonians go to the fresquería for their
essentials.
Aside from the fresquerías and perpetually
warm weather, Houston has proven different
in other noticeable ways.
“As soon as I got to the airport, I saw like,
five guys with cowboy hats and cowboy boots.
I [thought], ‘Damn, I only see one cowboy hat
a year in New York.’”

their community, the bodega really brings
them back.”
Díaz goes by his alter ego, Juan Bago,
during interviews, and asks questions about
the role of the bodega in their lives.
He asks three key questions of each one:
their biggest tab at their local bodega; the
strangest thing sold there; and details on their
most recent visit.
Díaz has interviewed musician Sensato,
who is Bronx-raised, and Bodega Bamz, an
East Harlem rapper. He also doubles up with
Oscar Martinez, better known to some as O,
to chat with artists at Brisk Bodega Launches
in each city he visits.
“Mike was selected to be the host of
the Brisk Bodega Chat series because
he’s incredibly likable,” explained Eric
Whitehouse, Brisk’s Marketing Director.
“His Juan Bago personality has an organic
comedic flare that reflects the multi-cultural
values and influences that resonate with our
consumer. He’s a great partner with a true
passion for creativity, collaboration and
community, which are the same pillars of the
Brisk Bodega program.”
While in Texas, Díaz has interviewed
Milkman, a rapper of Mexican origin; Fat
Tony, a rapper of Nigerian descent; and
a Mexican-American muralist, Santos
Guerrero.

Christine Quinn has served as a City Councilmember for the lower West Side of
Manhattan since 1999. In 2006, she was elected Speaker, making her the highest-ranking
woman and highest-ranking openly gay elected official in City history. Her initial foray
into electoral politics took place in 1991, when she managed the campaign of Tom Duane
and then served as his Chief of Staff in the City Council. She later became the Executive
Director of the NYC Anti-Violence Project where she worked closely with the New York
City Police Department to reduce hate crimes. Quinn and her wife, Kim
Catullo, live in Chelsea, with their dogs Justin and Sadie.

I
am running for mayor
because I care deeply about
this city and its people, and
because I have the knowhow
and experience to solve the
challenges we face.
And while plenty of candidates talk
like progressives, I’m the only one who’s
actually delivered on progressive values.
As Speaker of the City Council, I passed
eight on-time, balanced budgets protecting
critical social services, firehouses and
libraries. I saved 4,100 teachers from
layoffs, fought overcrowding in schools
and empowered parents. I helped protect
our neighborhoods by putting more cops
on the street and working to improve
police-community relations. I stood up for
tenants against
bad landlords by passing the Safe
Housing Act, which has already resulted
in more than 5,000 of the city’s apartments
being renovated, and the Tenant Protection
Act, which for the first time allows tenants
to sue their landlords for a pattern of
harassment. I passed the paid sick leave
bill, giving New Yorkers the ability to
take the time off they need without losing
their jobs, and the living wage law, which
ensured that workers at many governmentfunded developments make at least $10 per
hour. And I sued Mayor Bloomberg over
his policy of turning the city’s homeless
away from shelters.
While other candidates pay lip service to
Latino voters, I have a record of results.
I passed a law to reduce unnecessary
deportations by preventing law
enforcement turning non-criminals over to
Immigration Customs and Enforcement. I
partnered with the New York Immigration
Coalition on a program that has already
provided over 9,000 immigrant families
with photo IDs that allow better access
to city services and
facilities, including their
children’s schools. I
have advocated strongly
for the New York
DREAM Act. And I
have reformed “stopand-frisk” in order to put
an end to discrimination
against Latino and
minority youth and
created an independent
counsel within the
NYPD to oversee its
practices.
As mayor, I will
continue to promote
initiatives geared toward
Latinos and toward the middle class in
general. I will dramatically reform the
English Language Learner system to help
these students graduate on time and get
ready for college and a rewarding career.
Additionally, I have a plan to require all
City agencies that support small businesses
to identify language needs up front and
provide translated documents for all
permits. When inspections
occur, city officials will be required
to communicate to business owners the
results of their inspection clearly and in a
language they understand so we can avoid
people getting fined for the same thing
multiple times.
Finally, I devised a program where
students who translate for the City will
receive a CUNY scholarship, giving young
people who volunteer a better shot at the
American Dream.
What sets my candidacy apart is that
I have a substantial, verifiable record of
accomplishments and a vision for this city
that is far-reaching yet realistic.
I ask for your support so that, together,
we can continue to do great things for
New York City.

Mientras que otros candidatos solo dan labia
a los votantes latinos, solo yo tengo un historial
de resultados. He pasado una ley para reducir
las deportaciones innecesarias al impedir la
aplicación de la ley que permite que los oficiales
entreguen a personas que no son criminales
a inmigración y control de aduanas. Me asocié
con la Coalición de Inmigración de Nueva York
en un programa que ya ha proporcionado más
de 9.000 familias de inmigrantes con una foto
de identificación que permitan un mejor acceso

e turn to local experts, leaders
and residents to explain
current events and how they impact
our lives. In this instance, Dr.
James Freeman, Inwood resident
and Chair of the Social Science
Department at CUNY’s Bronx
Community College, weighs in on
the civil unrest and violent events
in Egypt and why they matter.
Explícamelo: The Crisis in Egypt
all the oil, freight and military that passes
through the Suez Canal and you’ll get the
picture. Egypt also has negotiated a mild but
real peace accord with Israel, and Egypt is
considered a strong ally in the war against
terror. Cutting off military aid might not help
the situation, although it may appear to be the
most direct thing the U.S. can do right now.
Can you explain the nature of the
current civil unrest in Egypt?
After decades of authoritarian rule, from
Sadat through Mubarak, Egypt elected a
government led by President Mohammed
Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood. Once
elected, the Muslim Brotherhood moved to
establish a theocratic (religious-influenced)
government. This triggered a reaction by both
Egypt’s secular population and the dormant
military, which is heavily secularized. In July,
the military, led by General Sisi, overthrew
the Morsi government. The current conflict is
between supporters of the Morsi government
and Egypt’s military and secular population.
What is happening in Egypt?
Why are these events
relevant to us?
The conflict in Egypt is relevant to us here
in the city as we’re an international city –
what happens elsewhere in the world impacts
us here, from the neighborhoods in Queens
and Brooklyn where thousands of Egyptians
reside to the various Muslim neighborhoods
throughout the metropolitan area. In addition,
New Yorkers are civic-minded people who
understand the importance of elections,
protests and the need for security. The events
in Egypt are a delicate mix of all these things.
How events unfold there have real impact
on our lives here. You don’t need to look too
far in any neighborhood in the city to find
someone with real ties to the Middle East or
Egypt.
What is the future outlook for
Egypt?
The outlook for Egypt, today, is not one that
appears to lend itself to a peaceful solution
overnight. Both sides are committed in their
position. The Brotherhood has millions of
supporters, as does the military. Each strongly
believes in its role as leading Egypt into the
future. Americans can attempt to influence the
outcome, and this is something we often do
without thinking about the consequences, but
there’s not too much we can do besides urge
both sides to negotiate a peaceful settlement
of their differences. Our government, along
with the leadership of dozens of other nations,
is working behind the scenes to find a way for
both sides to reduce the conflict.

Why is the U.S. supplying Egypt
with foreign aid? Should it stop
doing so?
Egypt is the second largest recipient of U.S.
aid, behind Israel. America sends billions
to both countries every year in U.S. aid,
mostly military. Egypt occupies an important
geographic and political role in U.S. politics
throughout the Middle East. Just think about

We started the week with a re-post of
an excellent article by Cole Thompson of
My.Inwood.net on the history of Inwood
Station, which is the northernmost Post Office
in Manhattan and was established in 1923. Cole
Thompson’s meticulously researched article,
replete with pictures of that era, takes you on a
journey to the Inwood of yesteryear.
The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance
(NoMAA) has announced its next exhibition,
Immigrant Too, a follow-up to NoMAA’s
previous show of 2010, titled Immigrant.
This second exhibition delves into the artist’s
notion of being an “immigrant,” how he or she
responds to the present immigration debate as
it is carried out in personal, public, and political
spaces, and what approaches the artist takes,
from the subtle and conceptual, to the blatantly
political. All Uptown artists are encouraged to
apply to be a part of the exhibit. The deadline
for submissions is Monday, 9th September 2013
at 5pm.
We also stopped by Majas Tapas & Bar
(229 Dyckman), which is the latest addition to
the popular Dyckman Strip. Low key and cozy,
Majas Tapas is cranking out some inventive
cuisine that adds something special to the
already buzzing thoroughfare. We took another
look at the 2013 Dominican Day Parade
courtesy of DJ Lucha of Besos Not Bombs.
This was a big week for Uptown hip-hop so
lets get to it. First of all, we featured a great
Q&A with the brilliant producer Frankie P.
Soulful songstress, Camille Safiya, dropped
the first visuals for her collaboration project with
Frankie P, Island Blues. Reeseeboi released
If I Die featuring Audubon. M.Class also put
out his latest mixtape, Feeling Lucky?!. Not
to mention that we went behind the scenes
for the latest song from Pitbull’s protégé
Sensato, entitled Ponte Sensato, featuring

“Bullumba” Landestoy
recently celebrated his 89th
birthday with a celebration hosted
by community leaders who sought
to recognize the renowned artist’s
unique contributions.
“I have never felt this flattered,” said the
man of the hour.
It almost didn’t happen.
Considered one of the premier Latin
American composers, Maestro Landestoy,
also known by his nickname “Bullumba,” ,
has written more than 100 songs in the popular
genre, gaining international recognition as a
songwriter in the 1950’s after escaping the
Trujillo dictatorship and travelling to Mexico
and Venezuela.
His music has been performed and recorded
by many great Latin American vocalists, most
notably Celia Cruz, Toña la Negra, Alberto
Beltrán, and Vicentico Valdés. During the
Golden Age of Mexican cinema, Fernando
Fernández recorded Landestoy’s songs
“Carita de angel” and “Mi dulce querer”, both
of which have become immortalized in the
canon of popular romantic ballads.
In the late1950’s, Landestoy moved to New
York and performed as a pianist with various
musical groups, including the Lecuona Cuban
Boys led by Ernesto Lecuona. He left for
Puerto Rico in 1962 to join the San Antonio

Dominican Commission of Culture, that the
birthday boy was feted.
Among the guests who gathered were
those who specifically touted Landestoy’s
extraordinary breadth of work as well as
his generosity as a mentor to generations of
artists.
Culture Commissioner Carlos Sánchez
explained that the work of putting all the
pieces together for the celebration was
actually easy, except for one thing: Landestoy,
at first, roundly rejected the idea.
Not, Sánchez hastened to explain, because
of any overwrought notions of ego.
He simply thought it’d be too much fuss.
“When we told him about this, he didn’t
agree. The hardest part of doing this was to
persuade Landestoy to show up,” he laughed.
“Of course, this is only a tiny recognition of
his great life.”
Of late, Landestoy has focused on classical
music, a passion developed at the National
Conservatory in Santo Domingo where he
studied with Mary Siragusa. He has continued
to write extensively, including pieces for the
guitar and the piano. He has also served as a
professor at the San Antonio Abad Monastery
in Humacao, where he taught which piano,
classical guitar, and composition. His pieces
have been performed at Harmony Hall in
Washington D.C., CAMI Hall, Steinway Hall,
and Weill Recital Hall in New York City.
In addition, his music has been recorded
by the world-renowned pianist Martin
Soderberg, and more recently, by pianist
Alexander A. Wu, who is also recording
Landestoy’s complete works.
Pianist Martin Soderberg expressed passion
for the universality of the master’s music, and
was equally effusive about his admiration for
him as a friend.
“His music has a very special place in my
life because wherever I go, be it China, the
Philippines or Germany, the people simply
love his music,” he said. “I also need to say
that one of the biggest qualities of Landestoy

Rafael “Bullumba” Landestoy
recientemente celebró su cumpleaños
89 en una fiesta organizada por un
grupo de líderes comunitarios que
buscaban reconocer las contribuciones
únicas del conocido artista.
“Nunca me había sentido tan halagado”, dijo
el hombre del momento.
Considerado como uno de los principales
compositores latinoamericanos, el Maestro
Landestoy, también conocido como “Bullumba”,
como lo llaman cariñosamente, ha escrito más
de 100 canciones del género popular, ganando
reconocimiento internacional como compositor
en la década de 1950, después de escapar
de la dictadura de Trujillo y viajar a México y
Venezuela.
Su música ha sido interpretada y grabada
por muchos grandes cantantes de América
Latina, sobre todo Celia Cruz, Toña la
Negra, Alberto Beltrán, y Vicentico Valdés.
Durante la edad de oro del cine mexicano,
el gran Fernando Fernández inmortalizó sus
canciones “Carita de ángel” y “Mi dulce querer”
orquestadas por Chucho Zarzosa.
A finales de la década de 1950, Landestoy
se trasladó a Nueva York donde tuvo
presentaciones como pianista con varios grupos

for the King.
The photographer doubles as a curator
during his immersive tours of the streets of
America in which he documents the many
likenesses of Martin Luther King Jr., found in
murals throughout the country.
Vergara is a Chilean immigrant who was
awarded the National Medal of Arts and
Humanities by President Barack Obama in
June.
On Wed., Aug. 21, his photographic
exhibition of the Martin Luther King, Jr.
murals was on display at 1900 Lexington
Avenue, which is managed by Manhattan
North Management and Tahl Topp Properties.
The event was also hosted by the Greater
Harlem Chamber of Commerce, and came
just days before the 50th anniversary of the
March on Washington, D.C. in which King
delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.
That the exhibit was up for only a day
paralleled the short-lived existence of most
murals.
The lifespan of a mural is dependent
on many variables, from ownership of the
building, to the sturdiness of the edifice, the
ravages of weather and time, and the aesthetic
and cultural preferences of the day.
“The murals are welcomed when they
capture the spirit of the place,” said Vergara.
When using the cityscape as their canvas,
muralists have much more freedom than
if they are collaborating with entrenched
institutions, political or otherwise, he argued.

El fotógrafo funciona como curador durante
sus recorridos de inmersión en las calles de
la América urbana en los que documenta los
numerosos retratos de Martin Luther King Jr., que
se encuentra en murales a través del país.
Vergara es un inmigrante chileno que fue
galardonado con la Medalla Nacional de las Artes
y Humanidades por el presidente Barack Obama
en junio.
El miércoles 21 de agosto, su exposición
fotográfica de los murales fue exhibida en el 1900
de la avenida Lexington, que es administrado
por Manhattan North Management y Tahl Topp
Properties. El evento también fue auspiciado
por Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, y
tuvo lugar unos días antes del 50 aniversario de
la marcha en Washington, DC en la que King

explained.
Throughout his travels, Vergara has
observed that images of Martin Luther King
reflect the communities which have proudly
displayed his likeness.
Most often King is surrounded by other
historic Black figures, like Malcom X and
Nelson Mandela. Sometimes he and President
Obama stand side by side.
But his features become more malleable as
they enter different communities, said Vergara,
who swore that
King looks almost
Asian in a mural
in a predominantly Asian
community in Chicago. In another, he looks
Toltec and is surrounded by La Virgen de
Guadalupe and Emiliano Zapato; in yet
another, he plays the guitar.
“Who ever heard of Martin Luther King
playing the guitar?” mused Vergara.
This appropriation of the civil rights leader
is what Vergara loves about the murals, and
is, for him, an indication of the leader’s
universal appeal as evidence by the countless

One facet of the commemoration
was to honor the historic events;
another was to keep history ingrained
in the collective memory. And King, in
the likenesses displayed at the vacant
storefront, continues to capture the
public’s attention 50 years later.
“I’m watching people walk by and do
double takes,” said Williams.
Joseph Tahl, the President and cofounder of Tahl Propp Equities, which
owns 1900 Lexington, was also on hand
for the exhibit.
“With the 50th Anniversary of the March on
Washington, it makes you think of all Martin
Luther King has accomplished,” said Tahl.
He felt people should look to King more
often as a good example of selflessness; in
his own collaborations with the community,
Tahl said it was a model that he has sought to
incorporate.

Money is power.”
No surprise the assertion should come
from one who aspires to serve as financial
steward of over $140 billion in assets and to
oversee the $70 billion city budget.
As envisioned by Eliot Spitzer, the
erstwhile Governor of the State of New
York and once its Attorney General, the
Office of City Comptroller, for which he is a
Democratic candidate, is due for the kind of
revamp that involves a lot more than just a
fresh set of audit forms and new calculators.
The man whose legacy includes such
seemingly disparate terms as “scion,”
“steamroller,” and “Client No. 9” has reimagined the Comptroller’s office as an
activist post that dynamically leverages its
resources in order to advance the interests of
city residents and focus on – and influence –
economic justice issues.
Housing, schools, and transportation are
three critical areas that require attention
and whose quality will
determine the growth of the
city, says Spitzer.
“The money in those
pension funds is the power
that the citizens of this
city have to effectuate our
plans for the future,” he
explained. “I don’t think
we’re doing that as effectively as we might.”
Within the duties assigned to the
Comptroller are budget analysis, city
agency audits, and rooting out waste. Any
dollar that can be repurposed from needless
expenditures is to be reinvested in building
up the city’s infrastructure.
But Spitzer promises more than ledgerscouring.
Instead, he cites historical context for
the kind of “moral mandate” that should
inform stakeholders’ investments, and that
would guide his own decision-making as
Comptroller, pointing to divestiture in South
Africa during apartheid.
“People look at the divestiture movement
as a successful, grassroots effort to use the
power of the capital markets to change
political decision-making.”
And he insists that analyzing the market
requires more than a fixed gaze upon the
bottom line.
“One does not invest in a vacuum.
You invest in a moral climate, in a moral
framework that speaks to how you want to
make money.”
Speaking in echoes reminiscent of the
days when he forcefully pursued corporate
malfeasance, and its actors, on Wall Street as
State Attorney General, it seems the former
“Sheriff” hasn’t given up his badge.
Spitzer said he also intends to pursue
good corporate governance aggressively as
Comptroller. He would look to implement
a stronger set of checks and balances, and
would seek, for example, to separate the

When pressed on what precisely he is

“I am sorry I had to resign,” he says. “It’s
clear what the personal failings were there.

He insists that the federal government’s
decision not to charge him with a crime was
“the same decision they would have made in
every other similar context. I defer to their
decision.”
While he was never officially charged,
Spitzer is willing to concede he is guilty.
If not of hypocrisy, which he says is “an
elastic term,” at least of the transgression of
“not living up to the standards I aspire to.”
He says polls indicating his strong
support among African-American voters are
indicative of the kind of broad support that
he’s seen across the city.
“People are inherently forgiving, and
inherently understanding of the texture and
complexity of life.”
Nonetheless, he does not
hesitate to pass judgment on
former colleagues in Albany
who ignored or abandoned
policymaking decisions he
supported.
He denied the claim that he
had eschewed collaboration
while Governor, and said
that his independence on issues such as
the driver’s licenses to undocumented
immigrants was sometimes a “consequence
of necessity.”
“All the electeds ran away,” he said. “And
I say, shame on them. When I was standing
up for low-wage workers, they were
nowhere to be seen. Shame on them. But
in instances where there were collaborative
opportunities, we worked extraordinarily
well with people.”
He insisted he would know when to
choose between forging cooperation and
choosing autonomy, but that the latter
remained particularly important.
“If you want somebody who will be
independent and transformative, there are
going to be moments when that person is
alone in the fight,” he said. “That’s fine by
me.”
Candidates Spitzer and Stringer have met
in two debates marked by testy accusations
regarding trustworthiness, credibility and
accomplishment.
“After 20 years in governance, he has not
left any significant marks in public policy,”
said Spitzer of his opponent.
And he denied in no uncertain terms
claims that his own wealth and the selffinancing of his campaign, estimated to be at

alifornia has Silicon Valley;
New York has an Alley.
Members of New York City’s tech
community, known as the citizens of Silicon
Alley, gathered on Tues., Aug. 20th to
support one of their own, Reshma Saujani,
in her run for Public Advocate of New York
City.
Saujani, who served as Deputy Public
Advocate under Bill de Blasio, is also
founder of the non-profit Girls Who Code.
Created in 2012, the organization seeks to
aid young women to pursue academic and
career opportunities in computing fields.
It also aims to provide computer science
education and exposure to 1 million young
women by 2020. The organization teaches
young women to code in a matter of weeks,
and some of its pupils have even presented
their app ideas to Sheryl Sandberg, the
Founder of the Lean In Foundation
and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of
Facebook.
Some other tech luminaries were
present, including Rachel Sklar, founder
of The List and Change the Ratio, and
Nate Westheimer, the founder of NY Tech
Meetup.org.
“We need you to get out the vote,” said
Westheimer to approximately 200 guests
in attendance. He challenged each
of the attendees to bring three other
people to the polls and vote for
Saujani.
“There are candidates who come
into the room and regurgitate what
their advisor told them to say. And
then there’s the candidate that already
knows what to say. They’re native
to your community; they know what
you care about because they care about it.
When I met Reshma four years ago, right
off the bat, I could tell this is what she was,”
said Westheimer.
Rachel Sklar was equally enthusiastic in
discussing with The Manhattan Times and
The Bronx Free Press her own reasons for
supporting Saujani.
“Reshma has an amazing record,” said
Sklar. “She’s a clear and proven public
servant and she has great ideas. She has
an amazing vision in starting Girls Who
Code [and there is] the implementation of
that vision, really fast, really smart, really
effectively.”
Sklar, who is Canadian and won’t be
able to vote, also said New York City needs
someone “who will react nimbly, creatively
and effectively.”
While data from the New York Campaign
Finance Board shows that only 4 percent
of 18 to 29 year-olds voted in the 2009
municipal elections, Sklar had faith in the
tech set’s ability to get out the vote among
their millennial peers.

“I don’t think anyone in this crew who’s
running for this office has built something,

Getting communities engaged in a
way that will help them—and help them
help each other is a key part of the job,
explained Saujani.
It is also something that her former
boss, current Public Advocate and mayoral
hopeful Bill de Blasio has done well, she
said.
“He really built out the organizing
element of the office, to make sure we get
communities engaged from the ground up,”
she said. “That’s exactly what we’re trying
to do as well.”
Saujani said her experience as Deputy
Public Advocate has helped her prepare for
the post she seeks.
During her tenure in the office of the
Public Advocate, Saujani helped build a
coalition for accountability on spending,
and started the DREAM Fellowship to help
undocumented immigrant students to go to
CUNY.
“One of my biggest strengths is that I’ve
had experience in the office,” she noted. “I
can hit the ground running.”
Saujani also wants to tackle the digital
divide, and one of the first things she’ll do
if elected is plot the divide in an
effort to understand where resources
need to be invested. A recent report
issued by Manhattan Borough
President Scott Stringer found that
one third of city residents and 75
percent of NYCHA residents did not
have access to Broadband.
“Technology is not [just] cool, it’s
not the future,” she said. “It’s the current

school makes a difference between whether
you’re going to run up in the middle class
or you’re going to have to crawl up into it.”
While the Public Advocate’s office is
relatively new, Saujani said each Public
Advocate has left their own indelible mark
on the office, which was started in 1993
to function as a non-voting member of the
City Council that introduces legislation and
serves as a watchdog between the electorate
and the city government. The Public
Advocate is the first in line to succeed the
Mayor. Bill de Blasio, who was inaugurated
in 2009, was preceded by Betsy Gotbaum,
who was inaugurated in 2002, and Mark
Green, who was the first Public Advocate.

subway station at 116th Street and Lexington
Avenue.
While some people hurried past, others

Borough President.
In the Democratic primary on Sept. 10th,
he faces two fellow Councilmembers, Gail
Brewer and Jessica Lappin, as well as Julie
Menin, former chair of Community Board 1.
First elected in 2001, Jackson is a familiar
face to Northern Manhattan residents. His
7th Councilmatic district includes sections of
the neighborhoods of Harlem, Washington
Heights and Inwood. On the Council,
Jackson, a practicing Muslim, has served as
Education Committee Chair and Co-Chair of
the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus, together
with Councilmember Fernando Cabrera.
Jackson, who is term-limited, is the only
male and only African-American candidate.
He is seeking to be succeed Scott Stringer
as the Borough President. It is a goal that has
seen him out in every corner of the borough,
including this one in East Harlem.

Mayor, the Comptroller, the President
of the City Council (now the Speaker),
and the five borough presidents, and
each had a vote. The Board of Estimate
was abolished in 1989 after being ruled
unconstitutional.
While the position has been limited in
recent years, the Borough President still
retains the ability to influence legislation,
allocates funds, appoints members of
local community boards, and weighs in
on land use items and food policy.
Stephen Greene, a teacher, was
decidedly not undecided.
He said he would vote for Jackson for
Borough President.
“He’s in touch with my community.
A lot of people you see on TV, but they
don’t come out to the community,” said
Greene, who said he had also heard
Jackson speak at his church, St. John the
Baptist, in Harlem.
“He’s done a lot for the community.”

It’s back to
school time

y now, your kids are probably feeling the back-to-school
rush of angst and/or exhilaration that comes at this time
of the year. Here are some ideas to ease them back into a new
school year.
Deep Breaths
When it comes to getting ready for the
new school year, parents are never really
fully prepared. That’s because back-toschool time seems to arrive in an almost
lightning-bolt-like manner—in the form
of a school letter or newspaper ad—that
catches all parents by surprise. Where
does the time fly? Fortunately, all you need
is approximately two weeks to get your
family ready.
Two Weeks Before
Bedtime: Start to adjust your child’s
bedtime. If they’ve been going to bed at
later hours, it will take you several days to
get them back into the school time routine.
For those that have been in summer camp or
a similar scheduled activity, this adjustment
might be a little easier. Start adjusting
little by little, and begin to have them go
to sleep earlier, first a half hour earlier than
has been customary, then another half hour,
etc. Use increments that work for your
family, and also adjust your own schedule
to mimic theirs. Start dinnertime a little
earlier, refresh routines of bathtimes, teethbrushing and nighttime reading at specific
times, dim the lights and dull the noise
throughout your home to encourage your
children to begin to prepare. And of course,
be patient until they get it.
Clothes: This would be a good time to
have a mini-fashion show at home. Go over
your child’s wardrobe from the previous
school year and see what’s good to keep
or donate. Make sure you have enough
sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, and a lot of the
colder weather gear. If not, it’s time to go
shopping, but at least you’ll have a better
idea of what to get.
School Supplies: By now, you
should’ve received your child’s back-toschool shopping list. If not, Staples and
other office stores have a general list that’s
a great supplement. Although it’s always
great to check out what sales are available
at your local department stores, don’t rule
out the local dollar stores.
One Week Before
Last-Minute Shopping: There
should be a few clearance sales left for items
to pick-up. If you’re not sure of what to get,
wait until the first day of school, when you
can discuss with the teacher what’s really
needed for the classroom.
Calendar Planning: Start adding

those school vacations days on your family
calendar now. The NYC Department of
Education provides families with a copy
of the school year calendar on schools.nyc.
gov/Calendar. This, along with your school’s
individual calendar, will help you plan
accordingly your family’s vacation time and
extracurricular activities.
Three Days Before
Check in on your child: It’s easy to
get caught up in the activities and sales and
lists. Stop to check in on your children and
make sure they’re comfortable with what’s
going on. For kids starting a new school, this
could be a very difficult time. Perhaps your
child was left behind and is understandably
anxious about his/her return to the classroom.
Talk to them often, encourage honesty, and
accept their anxiety or anticipation. Be sure
to underscore in ways large and small, how
committed you are to their well-being. Be
serious, be silly. Listen attentively, and be
generous with hugs and kisses.
Path to School: Make sure they know
where they’re going. Walk them through
your morning and afternoon routes, even if
they’ve attended the school before. This will
add a sense of familiarity to their day again,
and when school officially starts, it won’t be
as overwhelming.
One Last Wish: A few days before
school starts, we ask our daughter if there’s
anywhere special she would like to eat or
something special she would like to do before
school starts. It’s our little toast to a great
summer, and wishing our kids a successful
and amazing new school year.

ctualmente, sus hijos probablemente están sintiendo la fiebre del
regreso a la escuela, la angustia y/o emoción que se produce en esta
época del año. Aquí están algunas ideas para facilitar el regreso a un
nuevo año escolar.
Respiraciones profundas
Cuando se trata de prepararse para el nuevo
año escolar, los padres nunca están totalmente

Obama has also been doing some direct
interventions with the leadership in Egypt.
Even John McCain went to Egypt recently to
do the same. There are negotiators from Qatar,
Saudi Arabia and many European nations.
The conflict in Egypt is very destabilizing to
the region as well as a potential human rights
tragedy. Peace, if not an immediate stop to
the current levels of violence, are on the
minds of many world leaders. The stakes are
too high to let the situation in Egypt worsen.
What can I as a reader do?
Keep abreast of the news. Learn more about
the history of other nations. Think about why
nations often struggle with religious versus
non-religious leaders and their policies.
The conflict between religious and secular
rule is an old one; try to understand this is
fairly natural as nations evolve. Speak out
when you see violence, wherever it might
be. And finally, understand that there are
no simple solutions to the problems facing
many nations throughout the Middle East.
Whenever students ask me what they can do,
my usual answer is, “Educate yourself on the
issues and then decide.”

back in the Heights, before being whisked
away again to Los Angeles.
He has also been getting an education on
the larger food scene in each city.
“Miami had the most impeccable cafecito
ever,” he lauded. “And it’s like people don’t
drink coffee in Houston.”
But what Houston lacks in coffee, it makes
up for in tacos.
Díaz took a quick liking to the offerings at
one particular locale.
“The tacos were so good, I joked I would
have their spare tire taco.”
He had the tongue taco instead. The oxtail
taco also got the Bago seal of approval.
Díaz’s own bodega is on the corner of
177th Street and Broadway.
He is such a frequent visitor that the
bodeguero already knows what he’s going to
buy when he walks in the door.
He is also aware if there is a change in
Díaz’s personal habits.
Díaz started juicing recently, and so is
avoiding sugar and carbohydrates.
His morning bagel has been replaced by
coconut water, eliciting concern from the
bodeguero.
“This guy really monitors my eating
habits,” laughed Díaz. He said that while he
usually doesn’t spend more than $25 each
time he visits the bodega, he has been at the
bodega at all hours.
One kind of merchandise Díaz has seen at
bodegas that has confounded him are clothes.
He re-enacts an imaginary thought process
of the patron who shops there: “You know
what? I’m not going to go to Gap to get

to the artists’ answers. All artists start from
somewhere.”

aire libre, pero nada podía borrar la

Robert Jackson.

El dinero es poder”.
No es de sorprender que la afirmación
venga de alguien que aspira a servir como
administrador financiero de más de $140 mil
millones de dólares en activos y supervisar el
presupuesto de $70 mil millones de la ciudad.
Según lo previsto por Eliot Spitzer, el antiguo
gobernador del estado de Nueva York y alguna
vez su fiscal general, la Oficina del Contralor
de la ciudad, de la cual es candidato demócrata
este año, necesita el tipo de renovación que
implica mucho más que un nuevo juego de
formularios de auditoría y nuevas calculadoras.
El hombre cuyo legado incluye términos
aparentemente dispares como “vástago”,
“aplanadora” y “cliente No. 9” ha re imaginado

Desafió a cada uno de los asistentes a llevar

Saujani.
“Hay candidatos que vienen al salón y dicen

Westheimer.
Rachel Sklar estaba igualmente entusiasmada
en discutir con The Manhattan Times y The
Bronx Free Press sus propias razones para
apoyar a Saujani.
“Reshma tiene un récord increíble”, dijo Sklar.
“Es una servidora pública clara y comprobada y
tiene grandes ideas. Tiene una increíble visión
en el inicio de ‘Girls Who Code’ y no solo visión,

“Mientras que el escenario tecnológico tiene
una reputación de estar llena de ansiosos jóvenes
‘hacking’ en la noche, estos son adultos”, añadió.
“En su mayoría, no pienso que las personas
saldrían a estas cosas si no están realmente
involucrados”.
La misma candidata exaltó las virtudes de
las diversas comunidades para las cuales,
argumentó, ya ella ha sido una defensora.
En una entrevista privada, Saujani habló
acerca de su experiencia, ideas y calificaciones.
Nació en Chicago de inmigrantes del sur de Asia
quienes fueron refugiados políticos de Uganda
y estudió política pública en Harvard y leyes en
Yale. Trabajó en ‘Wall Street’ y se convirtió en
Sub-Defensora Pública en el 2010.
“Lo que me trajo a la ciudad de Nueva
York fueron muchas deudas de préstamos
estudiantiles”, sonrío. “Me gradué de la escuela
de leyes e hice mi maestría, vine aquí y pensé
que en saldar la deuda en un par de años y
entonces hacia servicio público, pero dos años se
convirtieron en diez”.
Saujani dijo que sabía que su propia
experiencia de venir a la ciudad para
oportunidades económicas y académicas era
comparable con la de muchos – y en la que
ella se basará de ser elegida. Y su
compromiso con su familia permanece
fuerte, señalando que ella envía dinero
a su familia para ayudarlos a pagar la
renta.
Es difícil para Saujani señalar un gran
problema en particular de la ciudad de
Nueva York.
“Quiero hacer trampa y decir que empleos y
educación. La vivienda está en los primeros tres”.
Señala que los tres están relacionados.
Con su organización sin fines de lucro, ‘Girls
Who Code’, Saujani aborda la brecha educativa

Envolviendo a las comunidades en una manera

otro es una parte importante del trabajo, explicó
Saujani.
También es algo que su antiguo jefe, el actual
Defensor Público y con esperanzas para alcalde
Bill de Blasio ha hecho bien, dijo ella.
“El realmente construyó el elemento

Otra cosa que Saujani desea hacer es reducir
la brecha digital, y una de las primeras cosas que
hará de ser elegida es trazar la línea divisoria en
un esfuerzo de comprender donde se tienen que
invertir los recursos. Un reciente reporte publicado
por el presidente del Condado Scott Stringer
encontró que una tercera parte de los residentes
de la ciudad y un 75 por ciento de los residentes
de NYCHA no tienen acceso al internet.
La tecnología no es solo buena, no es el
futuro”, dijo ella. “Es lo actual y el no tener acceso
al Internet en su hogar, su edificio, su parque,
su escuela hace una diferencia entre si usted va
a correr hacia la clase media o va a tener que
arrastrarte hasta ella”, dijo Saujani.
Aunque la oficina del Defensor Público es
relativamente nueva, Saujani dijo que cada
Defensor Público ha dejado su huela indeleble en
la oficina, la cual fue comenzada en el 1993 para
funcionar como un miembro sin voto del Concejo
de la Ciudad que introduce legislación y sirve
como guardián entre el electorado y el gobierno
de la ciudad. El Defensor Público es el primero en
la línea de sucesión para alcalde. Bill de Blasio,

por Betsy Gotbaum, quien fue inaugurada en el
2001 y Mark Green, quien fue el primer Defensor
Público. Green se postuló para alcalde contra el
alcalde Bloomberg en el 2001.
Saujani dijo que tenía un objetivo principal en
su propia tenencia como Defensora Pública a
aliviar la pobreza.
“Hay demasiadas personas viviendo por
debajo de la línea de la pobreza”, dijo ella. “No
es una oficina legislativa. Es una de enrollarte
las mangas y solo trata de hacer las cosas tipo
oficina, y yo hice eso como Defensora Pública
Suplente”.
Si es elegida, Saujani sería la primera mujer
del sur de Asia en tener un escaño en el gobierno
de la ciudad. Y ella es la única candidata en

Spitzer maintained that even in his
short tenure as a governor, he was
proud of what he’d accomplished –
and what he’d learned.
“Politics, for me, is not a profession,
it’s a cause,” he said. “That’s why I’ve
done what I’ve done. Not because I
am perpetually looking for the next
office. I have sought positions where
I believed I could effectuate change.”
While Spitzer’s themes of
expanding opportunity for the middle
class and ensuring sound fiscal
policymaking seem familiar, less
so is the more ruminative affect in
which his thoughts, professional and
personal, are delivered.
“Nobody has a crystal ball,” says
Spitzer, with a rueful smile. “As
I think my career proves, life is
uncertain. There are no straight lines.”

Estimado Dave:
No te sientas horrible. Con
tantos tipos de bloqueadores
solares disponibles en estos
dias – y tanto consejos acerca de ellos – es fácil confundirse acerca del nivel de SPF
que necesitamos, cuanto y
con cuanta frecuencia aplicarlo. Esta haciendo lo correcto buscando un consejo
médico para que su hijo, y
espero que nadie más en su
familia, se convierta en una
“langosta” nuevamente.
Los niños y los adultos deberían aplicarse bloqueador
solar por lo menos, SPF
30, antes de entrar al sol.
Asegúrese de que la marca del bloqueador solar
ofrezca protección tanto
contra los rayos UVA y los
UVB. El SPF mayor de 50
no se recomienda porque
hay muy pocas pruebas
de que ofrezca una mayor
protección. Sin embargo, el
bloqueador solar a prueba
de agua es definitivamente
mejor cuando se está en la
playa.
Pocas personas entienden
exactamente cuanta cantidad de bloqueador solar
