Songs IN Group (SING)
Welcome circle leader duty parents! Each circle time lasts 20 minutes. During this time you
will lead the group in a combination of parachute play, games, activities and songs. Reading a
simple story with large pictures is also encouraged. Feel free to choose a few of the following
activities or a choice of your own.
Parachute play:

MAKING POPCORN - Children and parents stand in a circle holding onto parachute.
Several foam balls are placed on top of parachute and the children help to make the corn
pop into the air.

ABC VOLLEYBALL - Children and parents stand in a circle holding onto parachute.
The group then bounces the ball once for each letter in the alphabet. The group calls the
letters out loud during each bounce. Try not to drop the ball. This takes practice.

ABC CHILDREN - Children and parents stand in a circle holding onto parachute. The
group then slowly says the ABC’s. As each letter of the alphabet is called the children
whose name starts with that letter runs and sits under the parachute until the alphabet is
over and all the children are sitting under the parachute.

MERRY GO ROUND - Children and parents hold the parachute with one hand and turn
their bodies forward. They then do the actions dictated in the lyrics. To the tune of “Here
we go round the mulberry bush” the group sings the words: “This is the way we walk to
school, walk to school, walk to school. This is the way we walk to school so early in the
morning.” During this verse the children walk around in a circle holding the parachute.
Then the song and actions can be Hop, Skip, Tiptoe, Dance etc.

GRAND OL’ DUKE OF YORK - Children and parents sing the song and do the actions
of the lyrics with the parachute. (Lyrics below)

STORMY OCEAN - Half of children stand on top of parachute while the other children
and parents shake the parachute and make waves. Then switch so all of the children get a
turn.

AIR CONDITIONER - Half of children lie on ground under the parachute while the other
children and the parents mushroom the parachute up and quickly pull it down again,
fanning the children underneath it. Then switch so all of the children get a turn.

BOUNCING TREATS - On holiday party days, special treats can be bounced on the
parachute for the children to keep. Some ideas are: Halloween treats, candy canes,
chocolate hearts, Easter treats etc.

PING PONG NAMES - Paper cut outs of seasonal items; leaves, pumpkins, snow flakes,
hearts, shamrocks, Easter eggs, butterflies, etc. The monthly craft leader can trace out
enough shapes for all of the children in their group. Then they print the children’s names
on them with a bold pen. Then all of the names are put on the parachute and bounced
around. Once all of them have bounced off stop the parachute and let the children look
around and find their names.
Games and activities:

HUGS - The children run around the play area, doing whatever they feel like. When the
leader shouts “Hug!” each player finds someone to hug. Then the leader says “Go!” and
the players are off on their own once again.

MUSICAL HUGS - This can be done to music, with the partners running when the music
is being played and hugging when it stops.

ALPHABET BALL - Children and parents sit in a circle. They pass a ball from person to
person. As each person passes it on to the next they say a letter of the alphabet. This can
also be done with the entire group saying the letters together as the ball is passed around.

SEWING UP THE GAPS - Children and parents stand in a circle with their arms at their
sides. One player runs into and out of the circle. Every time that person passes between
two circle players, those two join hands to “sew up” the gaps. Soon the entire group will
be holding hands.

THE MORE WE PLAY TOGETHER - Children and parents sit facing each other in a
circle. Each player places their hands on the shoulders of the neighbours on either side.
Now everyone sways from side to side and sings “The more we play together” song.
(lyrics below)

JACK IN THE BOX - Children and parents sit facing each other in a circle. One parent
starts by saying the name of her child. As their name is spoken, that child jumps up and
quickly sits down again, just like a jack-in-the-box. Then the parent next in the circle
says the name of her child. This continues around the circle until all of the children have
had a turn to be a jumping jack. Alternatively the circle time leader can call out the
names of the children.

SLEEPING BUNNIES - Children pretend to be asleep. Parents gently rub their backs
while singing the song. Parents wake up their little bunnies by gently shaking or tickling
them. The bunnies then hop around while the parents clap. (This is always a favourite
game). (lyrics below)

ZOOM ZOOM - Parents and children sit in a circle and sing the song. During the zoom
zoom verses each person rubs their own hands together, right, left and right. During the
next verses each person presses their own hands together and moves them in a swaying
motion. When the count down begins the parents stand up. At Blast off, Parents scoop
their child up and lift them high in the air. (lyrics below)

GRAND OL’ DUKE OF YORK - Children sit on their parents’ knees. As the song is
sung, Parents lift their knees up and down and left and right, as the lyrics dictate. At the
end of the song parents pretend to tip them off their knees to one side. (lyrics below)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANIMALS - Divide the children into 4 groups. Name them Dogs,
Cats, Horses or Pigs etc. They have to pretend to be the animals as you sing Happy
Birthday to you. When it comes to “Happy birthday dear Dogs” for example all of the
dogs bark as loud as they can. Finish the game by singing “Happy birthday everyone”
when all of the children make their animal noises together.

CLAP MY NAME - Children and parents sit in a circle facing the middle. Circle leader,
or parents can ask each child their name, going around the circle. When the child says
her name, you then clap the syllables and then get all the children to copy it. So, for
example, if the child’s name was Madeline, you’d clap three times as you said “Ma – deline.”

WHO CAN BUILD A TOWER? - Children and parents sit in a circle facing the middle.
Each child is given a cardboard or duplo block. Start the game by putting a block in the
centre of the circle. Going around the circle, each child in turn adds a block to help to
build the tower until it topples. The next child in the circle starts off the new tower.
Build the excitement by counting out loud, and give a big clap to each toddler who
attempts to place a block on the tower.

BUBBLES - Circle leader sits on the floor and blows bubbles for the children to play
with.

LITTLE AIRPLANES – Sung to the tune of: I’m a little teapot
I'm a little airplane,
(children raise arms at sides to shoulder height.)
Now watch me fly!
(They spin one of their arms in front of them as if it were a propeller)
Here are my instruments
From down low to up high.
(With their other arm, they reach from the ground to above their heads.)
First I get revved up.
(Children make engine noises while still spinning their arms.)
Then I can fly,
(Children raise arms to shoulder height.)
Lifting off the runway
(They start walking forward.)
Up into the sky!
(They go up on their tiptoes and continue to move forward. Let them circle awhile before
returning to their original positions.)

STAND UP AND SAY HOO - RAY! – Tune: Muffin man
If you're wearing red today,

Stand up and say "Hoo-ray!"
Continue with blue, pants, stripes, skirts etc, until all of the children are standing up.
