Songs IN Group (SING) Welcome circle leader duty parents! Each circle time lasts 20 minutes. During this time you will lead the group in a combination of parachute play, games, activities and songs. Reading a simple story with large pictures is also encouraged. Feel free to choose a few of the following activities or a choice of your own. Parachute play: MAKING POPCORN - Children and parents stand in a circle holding onto parachute. Several foam balls are placed on top of parachute and the children help to make the corn pop into the air. ABC VOLLEYBALL - Children and parents stand in a circle holding onto parachute. The group then bounces the ball once for each letter in the alphabet. The group calls the letters out loud during each bounce. Try not to drop the ball. This takes practice. ABC CHILDREN - Children and parents stand in a circle holding onto parachute. The group then slowly says the ABC’s. As each letter of the alphabet is called the children whose name starts with that letter runs and sits under the parachute until the alphabet is over and all the children are sitting under the parachute. MERRY GO ROUND - Children and parents hold the parachute with one hand and turn their bodies forward. They then do the actions dictated in the lyrics. To the tune of “Here we go round the mulberry bush” the group sings the words: “This is the way we walk to school, walk to school, walk to school. This is the way we walk to school so early in the morning.” During this verse the children walk around in a circle holding the parachute. Then the song and actions can be Hop, Skip, Tiptoe, Dance etc. GRAND OL’ DUKE OF YORK - Children and parents sing the song and do the actions of the lyrics with the parachute. (Lyrics below) STORMY OCEAN - Half of children stand on top of parachute while the other children and parents shake the parachute and make waves. Then switch so all of the children get a turn. AIR CONDITIONER - Half of children lie on ground under the parachute while the other children and the parents mushroom the parachute up and quickly pull it down again, fanning the children underneath it. Then switch so all of the children get a turn. BOUNCING TREATS - On holiday party days, special treats can be bounced on the parachute for the children to keep. Some ideas are: Halloween treats, candy canes, chocolate hearts, Easter treats etc. PING PONG NAMES - Paper cut outs of seasonal items; leaves, pumpkins, snow flakes, hearts, shamrocks, Easter eggs, butterflies, etc. The monthly craft leader can trace out enough shapes for all of the children in their group. Then they print the children’s names on them with a bold pen. Then all of the names are put on the parachute and bounced around. Once all of them have bounced off stop the parachute and let the children look around and find their names. Games and activities: HUGS - The children run around the play area, doing whatever they feel like. When the leader shouts “Hug!” each player finds someone to hug. Then the leader says “Go!” and the players are off on their own once again. MUSICAL HUGS - This can be done to music, with the partners running when the music is being played and hugging when it stops. ALPHABET BALL - Children and parents sit in a circle. They pass a ball from person to person. As each person passes it on to the next they say a letter of the alphabet. This can also be done with the entire group saying the letters together as the ball is passed around. SEWING UP THE GAPS - Children and parents stand in a circle with their arms at their sides. One player runs into and out of the circle. Every time that person passes between two circle players, those two join hands to “sew up” the gaps. Soon the entire group will be holding hands. THE MORE WE PLAY TOGETHER - Children and parents sit facing each other in a circle. Each player places their hands on the shoulders of the neighbours on either side. Now everyone sways from side to side and sings “The more we play together” song. (lyrics below) JACK IN THE BOX - Children and parents sit facing each other in a circle. One parent starts by saying the name of her child. As their name is spoken, that child jumps up and quickly sits down again, just like a jack-in-the-box. Then the parent next in the circle says the name of her child. This continues around the circle until all of the children have had a turn to be a jumping jack. Alternatively the circle time leader can call out the names of the children. SLEEPING BUNNIES - Children pretend to be asleep. Parents gently rub their backs while singing the song. Parents wake up their little bunnies by gently shaking or tickling them. The bunnies then hop around while the parents clap. (This is always a favourite game). (lyrics below) ZOOM ZOOM - Parents and children sit in a circle and sing the song. During the zoom zoom verses each person rubs their own hands together, right, left and right. During the next verses each person presses their own hands together and moves them in a swaying motion. When the count down begins the parents stand up. At Blast off, Parents scoop their child up and lift them high in the air. (lyrics below) GRAND OL’ DUKE OF YORK - Children sit on their parents’ knees. As the song is sung, Parents lift their knees up and down and left and right, as the lyrics dictate. At the end of the song parents pretend to tip them off their knees to one side. (lyrics below) HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANIMALS - Divide the children into 4 groups. Name them Dogs, Cats, Horses or Pigs etc. They have to pretend to be the animals as you sing Happy Birthday to you. When it comes to “Happy birthday dear Dogs” for example all of the dogs bark as loud as they can. Finish the game by singing “Happy birthday everyone” when all of the children make their animal noises together. CLAP MY NAME - Children and parents sit in a circle facing the middle. Circle leader, or parents can ask each child their name, going around the circle. When the child says her name, you then clap the syllables and then get all the children to copy it. So, for example, if the child’s name was Madeline, you’d clap three times as you said “Ma – deline.” WHO CAN BUILD A TOWER? - Children and parents sit in a circle facing the middle. Each child is given a cardboard or duplo block. Start the game by putting a block in the centre of the circle. Going around the circle, each child in turn adds a block to help to build the tower until it topples. The next child in the circle starts off the new tower. Build the excitement by counting out loud, and give a big clap to each toddler who attempts to place a block on the tower. BUBBLES - Circle leader sits on the floor and blows bubbles for the children to play with. LITTLE AIRPLANES – Sung to the tune of: I’m a little teapot I'm a little airplane, (children raise arms at sides to shoulder height.) Now watch me fly! (They spin one of their arms in front of them as if it were a propeller) Here are my instruments From down low to up high. (With their other arm, they reach from the ground to above their heads.) First I get revved up. (Children make engine noises while still spinning their arms.) Then I can fly, (Children raise arms to shoulder height.) Lifting off the runway (They start walking forward.) Up into the sky! (They go up on their tiptoes and continue to move forward. Let them circle awhile before returning to their original positions.) STAND UP AND SAY HOO - RAY! – Tune: Muffin man If you're wearing red today, Red today, red today, If you're wearing red today, Stand up and say "Hoo-ray!" Continue with blue, pants, stripes, skirts etc, until all of the children are standing up. Songs: Grand ol’ Duke of York Muffin Man The grand ol’ Duke of York He had ten thousand men, He marched them up to the top of the hill And he marched them down again. Do you know the muffin man, The muffin man, the muffin man? Do you know the muffin man Who lives on drury lane? When they were up, they were up When they were down, they were down, When they were only halfway up, They were neither up nor down. Yes I know the muffin man The muffin man, the muffin man. Yes I know the muffin man Who lives on drury lane. He marched them to the right, He marched them to the left, He marched them all around the town And he marched them out of sight. We all know the muffin man The muffin man, the muffin man. We all know the muffin man Who lives on drury lane. Sleeping Bunnies The more we play together See the bunnies sleeping, Till it’s nearly noon, Come let us wake them With a merry tune. Oh so still, are they ill? Wake up little bunnies, Hop little bunnies, hop, hop, hop Hop little bunnies, hop, hop, hop All day long. Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was white as snow And everywhere that Mary went, Mary went, Mary went, Everywhere that Mary went The lamb was sure to go It followed her to school one day School one day, school one day It followed her to school one day Which was against the rules. It made the children laugh and play, Laugh and play, laugh and play, It made the children laugh and play To see a lamb at school And so the teacher turned it out, Turned it out, turned it out, And so the teacher turned it out, But still it lingered near And waited patiently about, Patiently about, patiently about, And waited patiently about Till Mary did appear "Why does the lamb love Mary so?" Love Mary so? Love Mary so? "Why does the lamb love Mary so?" The eager children cry "Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know." Lamb you know, "Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know." The teacher did reply Mary Had a Little Lamb Mary had a little lamb, Little lamb, little lamb, On Top of Spaghetti On top of Spaghetti, all covered with cheese, I lost my poor meatball when somebody sneezed. It rolled off the table and onto the floor, And then my poor meatball rolled out of the door. Quack, quack, quack, Quack, quack, quack He led the others With a quack, quack, quack It rolled down the garden and under a bush, And then my poor meatball was nothing but mush! Down to the river They would go Wibble, wobble, wibble, wobble, To and fro But the one little duck With the feather on his back He led the others With a quack, quack, quack The mush was as tasty as tasty could be, And then the next summer it grew into a tree. Quack, quack, quack, Quack, quack, quack He led the others With a quack, quack, quack The tree was all covered all covered with moss, And on it grew meatballs all covered with sauce. Back from the river They would come Wibble, wobble, wibble, wobble, Ho, hum, hum But the one little duck With the feather on his back He led the others With a quack, quack, quack So if you have spaghetti all covered with cheese, Hold onto your meatball 'cause someone might sneeze.
