food pick-up once a month. The pick-ups are on

Every school year St. John School receives many requests
for tuition assistance. This year there is a substantial increase in the need for tuition financial assistance. Many
families want their children to have the Catholic education
experience but the tuition expense is a financial burden
and they struggle to keep their children in our school year
to year.

“maintain” themselves throughout their period of formation?
This means that the cost of their upkeep and personal needs
throughout the period of formation and education is theirs to
bear. Yes, they get a stipend, but not enough to cover all
these costs. The Pentecost seminary collection goes to the
support of the seminaries, not to help seminarians with their
personal needs.

As Godfrey leaves our parish in June, can we work together
to make a “Love Offering” of money that he will be able to
draw on as he continues in seminary rather than give
individual gifts to thank him for his wonderful presence with
us over the last year? This would help him to concentrate
on the pastoral work and preparation he so much wants to
receive and we would so much like him to continue with!

Are You Registered to Vote? The Catechism of the
Catholic Church says, “Submission to authority and
co-responsibility for the common good make it morally
obligatory … to exercise the right to vote” (2240).
Pope John Paul II wrote in 2003, "Certainly the
Christian vision leads to the expectation of "new
heavens" and "a new earth" (Rev 21:1), but this
increases, rather than lessens, our sense of responsibility for
the world today. I wish to reaffirm this forcefully at the
beginning of the new millennium, so that Christians
will feel more obliged than ever not to neglect their
duties as citizens in this world" (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, n. 20). Please make sure you are ready to exercise
this Christian responsibility by registering and voting in
the primaries and the General Election.
The students in the Confirmation class did a lot of
service hours for our parish and, in the process,
discovered quite a bit about themselves and their
beliefs. They painted a fence in the cemetery, visited
some elderly parishioners with food baskets and
small gifts, served meals in the soup kitchen, volunteered as babysitters during Sunday Mass and were
servers and cantors and ushers at various times during the year. They learned that the life of the parish
centers on the Eucharist, but extends throughout the
week to all kinds of people, situations and needs. In
turn, they discovered how truly gifted they were and
how much the life of the Church depends on them.
At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends on the Apostles to strengthen them for the task of spreading the
Gospel. In Confirmation, we are given the spiritual
gifts we need to fulfill our own mission. Those gifts
are nourished and developed in and though others, so
that each of us contributes to the vitality and personality of our family, our parish and our community.
Make room for others, especially those who seem
different or unique. They too have something to offer
and it just might be what you need. Be open to the
gifts the Holy Spirit brings us, regardless of the package in which they come, including the package you
call ‘me.’

time with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Every Tuesday evening from 5:009:00 PM the Blessed Sacrament will be
exposed in the chapel in the lower church.

The giving of the Spirit to the new people of God
crowns the mighty acts of the Father in salvation history.

The Jewish feast of Pentecost called all devout Jews to
Jerusalem to celebrate their birth as God's chosen people, in the covenant Law given to Moses at Sinai (see
Leviticus 23:15-21; Deuteronomy 16:9-11).
God loves a cheerful giver.”
(2 Corinthians 9:7)
In today's First Reading the mysteries prefigured in that
feast are fulfilled in the pouring out of the Spirit on
Mary and the Apostles (see Acts 1:14).
The Spirit seals the new law and new covenant brought
by Jesus, written not on stone tablets but on the hearts
of believers, as the prophets promised (see Jeremiah
31:31-34; 2 Corinthians 3:2-8; Romans 8:2).
Pentecost Sunday
There are some days and moments in life that really
change us. They are moments of decision, growth, choice,
and loss. Some will be noted as anniversaries, others will
be anonymous dates overshadowed by the events of the
day. But we are defined by our experiences and the lessons they teach. It changes how we look at ourselves and
can help us define the purpose of our life.
The Spirit is revealed as the life-giving breath of the
Father, the Wisdom by which He made all things, as we
sing in today's Psalm.
In the beginning, the Spirit came as a "mighty wind"
sweeping over the face of the earth (see Genesis 1:2).
And in the new creation of Pentecost, the Spirit again
comes as "a strong, driving wind" to renew the face of
the earth.
The Apostles experienced a similar moment in their life of
faith. The Holy Spirit descends upon the Apostles and
they are transformed from a group of frightened and fearful men, who squabbled over positions of authority and
importance into fearless preachers of the Gospel. Filled
with the power of the Spirit, they will become loyal and
devoted servants of the Word and the world will be
changed. United together in the power of the Spirit, they
will carry out their mission and even give their lives for
the sake of the Gospel.
As God fashioned the first man out of dust and filled
him with His Spirit (see Genesis 2:7), in today's Gospel
we see the New Adam become a life-giving Spirit,
breathing new life into the Apostles (see 1 Corinthians
15:45,47).
Like a river of living water, for all ages He will pour
out His Spirit on His body, the Church, as we hear in
today's Epistle (see also John 7:37-39).
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are essential to the life of
every Christian. We may not remember the date of our
Baptism or Confirmation, but the events of those days
have been a daily part of our life. We are never left on our
own, but are always given the grace we need to live and
practice what we believe, becoming a stronger witness
every time we allow God to work in and through us.
Through Word, prayer and sacrament, the Lord renews us
for our mission. Be not afraid, but confident in the power
of the His Holy Spirit.
We receive that Spirit in the sacraments, being made a
"new creation" in Baptism (see 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15).
Drinking of the one Spirit in the Eucharist (see 1 Corinthians 10:4), we are the first fruits of a new humanity fashioned from out of every nation under heaven, with
no distinctions of wealth or language or race, a people
born of the Spirit.

A NEW PENTECOST………….. “Inviting All to Be Happy and Hopeful”
The following is an excerpt from America magazine on the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican
Council. The author is Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga, S.D.B., the archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and
president of Caritas Internationalis. Pope Francis has called us to mark the 50th anniversary of the closing of Vatican II with
a Holy Year dedicated to God’s Mercy. This reflection might help us see where the Spirit has led us.
“Years after the opening of the council, many who know about it have not yet implemented it or read its documents or understood
it. It is also true that many have sought to erase its memory because the challenges the council set before us, and continues to set
before us, are rather uncomfortable for some structures and persons.
“The new Pentecost” convened by Blessed (now Saint) John XXIII opened, and still opens, the doors and windows of a church in
which more than a few pastors and laypeople suffer the temptation to close themselves off in a cell that is secure or full of
prestige and comfort, little disposed to listen to the anguish and hopes of this world.
Upon becoming the pilot of Peter’s barque as its “pastor and guide, navigator and admiral,” John XXIII found the church walled
up in a holy city with a very European mentality and too centered in Rome. He was “provoked” by the Spirit of God and by
internal and external ferments that caused some discomfort.
Painfully, the comments of the bishops about the new council, gathered in 1959 and 1960, revealed that the ecclesiastical
hierarchy had not yet taken the pulse of their world. They considered many of the subjects “foreign” to the mission of the church.
Pope John himself did not think that way. He was ready to listen to the voice of renewal and dialogue so that the church might
become an apostolic, missionary, servant church. The surprise of the entire world was enormous as he announced that it was
necessary to open the doors and windows of the church and to renew the missionary commitment of the baptized. No less a
surprise was the affirmation of the universal call to holiness for everyone.
In the prayer to prepare the council, the pope spoke clearly of “a new Pentecost.” It was to be an ecumenical council marked by
dialogue, openness, reconciliation and unity. All were convened, all included, all responsible, all holy, all missionaries.
Celebrating With the People of God In Saint Peter’s Square on the morning of Oct. 11, 1962, some 2,500 bishops, in
procession and singing the Litany of the Saints, marched toward the basilica. They were accompanied by the ringing of bells in
all the churches of urban Rome.
As the 20th-century council opened, a new epoch began for the church. A new church appeared in the old and majestic Basilica
of Saint Peter. General enthusiasm was evident, though the indifference of some was not absent. In his inaugural discourse, Pope
John XXIII surprised everyone. With great simplicity he began, “Mother Church is happy and exults with joy.” He had begun to
dispel fears and reservations and to allow all to be filled with the joy of the Spirit. Then the pope responded directly to critics of
the council. “We have a completely different opinion,” he said, “than those prophets of unhappiness, who constantly predict
disgrace, as if the world were about to perish. In the current state of human affairs, through which humanity seems to be entering
into a new order, we should recognize instead a hidden plan of divine providence.”
Defining the task of the council and the mission of the church, Pope John affirmed that it was necessary to consider the legacy of
20 centuries of Christianity as something that, beyond all the controversies, had become the common patrimony of humanity.
Therefore, he said, we are not talking about continuing to be trapped by the old. Rather we should with joy and hope, and without
fear or reserve, move forward with the work required by our time and our Lord Jesus Christ. Already in the bull that convened the
council and later in the encyclical “Pacem in Terris,” the pope referred to the signs of the times and to the duty to interpret them
with discernment. In this way John XXIII re-established the prophetic task of the church in the heart of history.
That day concluded with the pope’s famous improvised discourse before 100,000 people gathered with torches in Saint Peter’s
Square. This spontaneous celebration called to memory the popular acclamation at the Council of Ephesus, where the bishops’
definition of Mary as Mother of God was received with acclamation by the people. It was also a clear image of the church as the
people of God. The people of God, including the children, were present for all to see on the first day of the council.
The pope’s simple and fatherly words revealed that he was not vindicating primates, infallibilities or privileges, not even before
his brother bishops meeting in council, nor before any other persons. Rather he was inviting all to be happy and hopeful because
God the Father has looked upon us; we have been anointed by God the Holy Spirit and sent forth by God the Son.”

Un nuevo Pentecostés.............. "invitando a todos a estar feliz y esperanzado"
El siguiente es un extracto de la revista Latina en el 50 aniversario del inicio del Concilio Vaticano II. El autor es el cardenal

documentos. También es cierto que muchos han tratado de borrar su memoria, porque los desafíos que el Consejo puso delante

Definiendo la tarea del consejo y de la misión de la Iglesia, el Papa Juan afirmó que era necesario tener en cuenta el legado de
20 siglos del cristianismo como algo que, más allá de todas las controversias, se habían convertido en el patrimonio común de la
humanidad. Por lo tanto, dijo, no estamos hablando acerca de continuar siendo atrapado por el viejo. Más bien deberíamos tener
alegría y esperanza, y sin temor ni reserva, seguir adelante con el trabajo requerido por nuestro tiempo y de nuestro Señor
Jesucristo. Ya en el que convocó el concilio y más tarde en la encíclica "Pacem in Terris", el Papa se refirió a los signos de los
tiempos y el deber de interpretar con discernimiento. De esta manera restableció Juan XXIII la tarea profética de la iglesia en el
corazón de la historia.
Ese día concluyó con el famoso discurso improvisado del Papa ante 100,000 personas que se reunieron con antorchas en la plaza
de San Pedro. Esta celebración espontánea trae a la memoria la aclamación popular en el Concilio de Éfeso, donde fue recibida
la definición de los obispos de María como Madre de Dios con aclamación por el pueblo. También fue una clara imagen de la
Iglesia como pueblo de Dios. El pueblo de Dios, incluyendo a los niños, estaba presente para que todos puedan ver el primer día
del consejo.

La Voz de Pentecostés
The Holy Spirit, who came on Pentecost, gave voice to the
apostles to proclaim the truth of the Gospel. The Spirit, the
Soul of the Church, continues to enable the Church to
speak, and enables us to speak in our individual capacity.
As Cardinal Elio Sgreccia, former President of the
Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life has said, “The
Church must speak out in today's context on fundamental
rights, the right to justice, the right to peace, but above all
and in the first place, the right to life. If the Church did not
speak, did not proclaim the truth, it would be abandoning
its duty; it would be unfaithful to society, to the good of
society. Therefore, its precise duty is the very liberty to
intervene with word, and also with example -- the example
of promoting human life, of intervening for the salvation of
mankind."
