Southland Athelete of the Month
Russell Buckley, 39, is the Bridgeport News Southland
Area Athlete of the Month! Russell lives in the Bridgeport neighborhood and has been an athlete with the Special Olympics Chicago program since he was eight years
old.
Russell currently competes in floor hockey skills, soccer, volleyball, basketball, bowling, gymnastics, track &
field, and the tennis skills program at McGuane Park. But
his favorite sport is bocce ball.
Although Russell has been an accomplished athlete
since he was a young boy, his mother believes he has
found a new love of competing since joining the
McGuane Park program this past year. “Russell really enjoys coming to McGuane Park and competing with his friends,” says his mother,
Paula.
During his time as a Special Olympics Chicago athlete, Russell has won more
medals than he can count! He will compete on April 5th in gymnastics and will be
participating in the Spring Games competition in Track and Field from May 7 - 9.
This is the first time Russell will be competing in these events as an athlete of
McGuane Park.
Russell’s favorite part of competing is “going on the bus with my friends and winning medals.”
Russell is very close with his family, which includes his mother, his step-father
Carmelo and his siblings Frank, Danny and Nisa.
Russell is also a very proud uncle and loves his cat, Jinksy. His favorite hobbies
are cooking with his mom, playing puzzles and games and watching movies. Russell’s favorite thing to do when not competing is “staying home and relaxing.”
“Russell has been a great athlete to work with over the past year,” says Kathleen
McIntosh, Russell’s coach at McGuane Park. “He has such a positive attitude and
is always willing to try new things. He enjoys sports and Special Olympics, but enjoys the comradery with his friends the most. Russell is a joy to be around and
McGuane Park is lucky to have him! We look forward to see what this year brings
for Russell!”
For more information on the Special Olympics Chicago program, to donate or to
get involved, please visit www.sochicago.org.
Congratulations Russell on your success and continued hard work as an athlete of
Special Olympic Chicago!

Polygon art is a hybrid of mathematics & art. Fourth
grade students at St. Barbara School had studied polygons in an earlier unit and it was time to revisit the
world of angles.
The class had more recently viewed and discussed
how some of Piet Mondrian’s art used polygons. They
paid special attention to his Composition works which
are based on squares and rectangles, painted with vivid
basic colors, and outlined in black lines of various
widths.

Under the guidance of their teacher Ms. Catherine Brown and the Kindergarten
Team, all the students learned to count to 100! The students brought in their collections of 100 items to count and share.
The students wore hats and badges proclaiming the 100th day of school. They
listened to special stories about the 100th day of school, marched around the room
100 times, colored 100 spots on paper lady bugs, and many other fun 100 day activities. They also had a special healthy treat of fruit, yogurt and granola. Everyone at
McClellan School is proud of the Kindergarten Class. Keep up the good work!

The students then composed their own preliminary
polygon designs, chose a maximum of five colors, and
painted large swatches of these colors. Next came the
painstaking work: they had to cut apart the polygons of
the pencil drawing one at a time, trace it on the painted sheet, cut, arrange, and glue down each polygon
according to their design. The final step, to reflect
Mondrian’s Compositions, was the addition of the thin
black construction paper lines which outlined and
accentuated the polygon figures. The result is an art
piece that is a very richly colored polygon design with
a hint of Piet Mondrian!

Resurrection Change!
Most people have the desire to change, to improve,
to become better. These desires are good gifts from
God our creator who made humans in His own image.
But have you ever wondered if your attempts to
change or become better are actually good enough for
God?
Left to ourselves, we humans try to change in our
own power. But human power is very limited, and
human changes only effect externals, the parts people
see, and only for a short time. We cannot change our
spiritual identity or be good enough for God by ourselves. This is why we need God.
The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ came to show us
God's love and save those who know they need saving.
Through Jesus' death for sinners and resurrection from
the dead, He alone can forgive sins and bring total
transformation to anyone who trusts in Him. Jesus can
make us right with God and change us from the inside
out forever; Our hearts can be cleansed, our minds
renewed, our motivations purified, our behavior made
right, and our relationships healed by Jesus Christ.
Jesus is like no other method of human improvement He makes us new!
We invite you to learn about Jesus Christ. All are
invited to come to 3039 South Normal Ave for any/all
events listed, or contact us with questions at 312-8421470 or [email protected].

Remember, O most gracious
Virgin Mary, that never was it

thy protection, implored thy help,

The Kelly High School
Debate team were crowned
conference champions after
defeating over 30 teams
from 14 other schools on
February 21st and 22nd at
Lindblom Academy.
The tournament ended
with Kelly teams placing in
both the first and second
place positions. The partnership of Kimberly Hernandez and Isabel TemosiKimberly Hernandez, Isabel Temosihue, Taylor hue claimed the champiSheehan and Juan Chavez
onship trophy, while the
team of Taylor Sheehan and Juan Chavez finished with a finalist trophy.
Based on the conference championship results, both partnerships listed above
received invitations to compete in the prestigious McDermott, Will and Emery
Urban Debate Invitational which was held March 21-22. In addition, the Kelly
Debate Team qualified nine partnerships to compete for the City Championship
Title against 70 other Chicago Public Schools at Northwestern University on March
28th and 29th. Though none of the teams placed, Vanessa Cheng finished as one of
the top twenty tournament speakers.
Despite falling short at the city championships, Coach Dodsworth reflected on a
very successful season.
“We had incredible results this year for such a young team, with two tournament
wins including the Conference Championships and multiple individual speaker
awards,” Dodsworth stated. “It seems to indicate a bright future for our team."
