Letter from our Minister
Dear Friends
CS Lewis once said that there is not a cup of tea big enough or book long enough to keep him
satisfied! If you aren’t a great reader you might agree with him about the cup of tea, and if
you’re not a great tea drinker, then you could always substitute another drink that would have
the same effect. Either way, I am sure we all understand what CS Lewis is getting at – the
magical moment of finding ourselves engrossed in a story that we never want to end, accompanied by tea, wine, or whatever provides additional relaxation and refreshment.
My main aim in the lead up to a summer holiday is to find the right book to see me through our
break. Whether we are sitting on a beach or in a woodland, or at the top of a mountain, I love
to lose myself in a good story, and a cup of tea is a perfect accompaniment. To me, that is an
important part of rest and relaxation, and woe betide the rest of the family if the right book
hasn’t been found, because as someone who finds it difficult to sit down and do nothing, my inclination is then to cajole everyone else to go on a walk or visit a museum, or kick a football
around, when all they want to do is sit down with a good book to read . . . so it is within everyone’s interests to find me the right book.
The longer, and hopefully warmer summer days, with the daily routine taking a break for the
school holidays, is a time for us to find some form of relaxation and refreshment, to wind down
a little from the usual busy-ness of life. And of course everyone has their own way of doing
that. This year’s football World Cup will bring many the opportunities they need to shout at the
ref, and give Roy Hodgson some words of wisdom. For others the Commonwealth Games will provide compulsive viewing – and being so close to home that viewing might be live at the Games as
well as on television. For others the garden can demand their whole attention, or others will
find peace and quiet on a beach with the water lapping quietly beside them. However you chose
to relax over the summer I hope you are able to find a little bit of yourself, to refresh your
batteries and regain your sense of perspective which might have got lost in all the duties that
demand your attention during the rest of the year.
And if you don’t have a break planned and are staying at home in the usual routine, then I hope
you might find both a cup of tea big enough, and a book long enough to provide you with some
relaxation and refreshment!
Have a good summer.
Best wishes

Because all the Tuesday afternoon dancers have
been promoted to Improvers, Esther is going to
start up a new beginners line dance class on
Thursday mornings in the Kirk Loan Hall, Kirk
Loan on Thursday 11th September from 10am—
10.45am. The class is for complete beginners so
anyone who has ever fancied line dancing should
come along and try it out! It’s great fun and the
music is wide and varied, including Country &
Western, South American, Irish and also up-todate dance/pop music. We have a lot of social
activities too including lunches and later this year
a line dance weekend to Montrose.
Please also note that the Easy Exercise Class
that used to take place on a Wednesday at 12
noon in the Kirk Loan Hall will be changing it’s day
and time to Thursdays from 11am—12 noon
(directly after the new line dance class).
If you would like any further information about
line dancing or easy exercise, please contact:
Esther on : 334 3134 or [email protected].
Some go to church just for a walk
Some go to laugh, some to talk
Some go there for speculation
Some go there for observation
Some go there to meet a friend
Some the tedious hours to spend
Some to learn the parson’s name
Some go there to wound his name
Some go there to meet a lover
Some new fashions to discover
Some go there to doze and nod
But few go there to worship God
