If you aren’t a great reader you might agree with him about the cup of tea, and if you’re not a great tea drinker, then you could always substitute another drink that would have the same effect. Either way, I am sure we all understand what CS Lewis is getting at – the magical moment of finding ourselves engrossed in a story that we never want to end, accompanied by tea, wine, or whatever provides additional relaxation and refreshment. My main aim in the lead up to a summer holiday is to find the right book to see me through our break. Whether we are sitting on a beach or in a woodland, or at the top of a mountain, I love to lose myself in a good story, and a cup of tea is a perfect accompaniment. To me, that is an important part of rest and relaxation, and woe betide the rest of the family if the right book hasn’t been found, because as someone who finds it difficult to sit down and do nothing, my inclination is then to cajole everyone else to go on a walk or visit a museum, or kick a football around, when all they want to do is sit down with a good book to read . . . so it is within everyone’s interests to find me the right book. The longer, and hopefully warmer summer days, with the daily routine taking a break for the school holidays, is a time for us to find some form of relaxation and refreshment, to wind down a little from the usual busy-ness of life. And of course everyone has their own way of doing that. This year’s football World Cup will bring many the opportunities they need to shout at the ref, and give Roy Hodgson some words of wisdom. For others the Commonwealth Games will provide compulsive viewing – and being so close to home that viewing might be live at the Games as well as on television. For others the garden can demand their whole attention, or others will find peace and quiet on a beach with the water lapping quietly beside them. However you chose to relax over the summer I hope you are able to find a little bit of yourself, to refresh your batteries and regain your sense of perspective which might have got lost in all the duties that demand your attention during the rest of the year. And if you don’t have a break planned and are staying at home in the usual routine, then I hope you might find both a cup of tea big enough, and a book long enough to provide you with some relaxation and refreshment! Have a good summer. Best wishes 2 Getting healthy …..it’s as easy as a walk in the park! Ageing Well in conjuction with Edinburgh Leisure have introduced 8 healthy walks in St Margaret’s Park over the summer. They take place every Monday at 11am and the meeting point is the gate on the corner of Corstorphine High Street. The Easy Steps walks are short organised walks, lead by trained volunteers that aim to get you up and active. If you are over 50 then come along and walk yourself to better health and wellbeing.
