“Haileybury City
is changing the
face of education
for Melbourne.”
Principal’s
Report
INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP ARE TWO OF THE KEY BUZZWORDS OF OUR NEW PRIME MINISTER. AS AN INSTITUTION,
HAILEYBURY HAS SOUGHT TO MAINTAIN THE HIGHEST OF TRADITIONAL STANDARDS IN CORE AREAS OF LITERACY AND NUMERACY
WHILE DEVELOPING A STRONG SENSE OF INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP.
R
ather than just talking about
innovation we have chosen to
embody it through the actions of the
institution – modelling it for our students.
Haileybury’s work in China is an example
of this, with eight partner schools and
Haileybury International School Wuqing.
Similarly, Haileybury City is changing the
face of education for Melbourne. There have
also been many curriculum, pedagogy and
technology innovations in recent years –
and the change will continue to deliver a
contemporary education relevant for young
people in the 21st Century.

It was pleasing but not surprising, therefore,
when The Educator Magazine acknowledged
Haileybury as one of Australia’s leading
innovative schools.
The citation read: “This recognition is
based upon your true innovation and drive
throughout the school’s culture, investment
in the right human resources, respect
for ongoing professional development,
appropriate accountability right up the
chain of command and of course, the right
technology”.
At the Future Melbourne Committee
(Melbourne City Council) meeting, which
unanimously approved Haileybury City, a
number of Council members were strong
in their praise for Haileybury. Lord Mayor
Robert Doyle congratulated the School
and leadership team and noted that the
development was “a watershed in providing
quality education in the centre of the city,
where we have very little of that in what we
consider to be a knowledge city”. Councillor
Stephen Mayne said that Haileybury was a
“trailblazer” in education and that this was
“very exciting” for Melbourne.
There has also been considerable innovation
within the curriculum, and coding and
science are particular areas of focus.
To have the skills to be innovative, creative
and entrepreneurial, students also need
a strong base of core skills in literacy and
numeracy. Haileybury has once again
delivered in this area with the 2015 national
testing (NAPLAN) results being the best in
the eight-year history of the program, which
once again sees Haileybury ranked among
the very best academic schools in
the country.

SBS World News Feature
THE HAILEYBURY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TIANJIN HAS COME A LONG WAY SINCE IT OPENED ITS
DOORS IN SEPTEMBER 2013. A SCHOOL THAT OPENED WITH ONLY 27 STUDENTS HAS NOW GROWN
TO A SCHOOL OF ALMOST 400 AND WILL CONTINUE TO GROW OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS.
H
aileybury has long maintained strong
education links with China and its
expansion from the VCE in China to
a campus in the country, has attracted much
media attention.
Earlier this year, SBS World News ventured
to China to see the campus first hand and
interview staff and students. Dr Nicholas
Dwyer, founding Head of Haileybury Beijing,
spoke about the benefits of the campus to
the local Chinese students as well as to our
students back home in Australia. The news
piece also allowed people back home to be
introduced to the well-rounded students
that the School is producing.
Year 12 student Niki Geng spoke about
how before she started at the School, she
could speak only minimal English: “The
class is very small. I can ask questions if
I have a problem and the teacher will
answer me right away, and in traditional
school I can just write it down and ask the
teacher after class”.
The full news story can be found on the
Haileybury website.
Australia’s
Largest School
Haileybury is officially Australia’s largest
school with enrolments exceeding
3,650 students across its three Melbourne
campuses. This figure will soon grow with the
opening of Haileybury City in 2016/2017.
The School has also recently been named
by The Educator magazine as one
of Australia’s Innovative Schools
of 2015.

Principal Derek Scott has also been
honoured by Monash University receiving
the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award
for the Faculty of Education. This award
is in recognition of Principal Scott’s work
at Haileybury as well as his exceptional
contribution to the education field in both
Australia and overseas. It was presented at
a ceremony at the University in October.

RECENTLY TRAVELLED TO NEW
DELHI to build education links
between India and Australia as part of
the ‘Education Mission to India’. During
his time at the summit, Principal Scott
discussed education issues and policy
with the now former Education and
Training Minister Christopher Pyne and
Education Ambassador Adam Gilchrist.
Outstanding NAPLAN Results
HAILEYBURY HAS STRONGLY SUPPORTED THE NATIONAL PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN) WHICH
WAS INTRODUCED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN 2008. THE PROGRAM IS A GOOD MEASURE OF THE DEVELOPMENT
OF CORE SKILLS IN LITERACY AND NUMERACY FOR STUDENTS IN YEARS 3, 5, 7 AND 9.
H
aileybury’s results have always placed
the School among the very best in
the country, and the 2015 results
are the best that have been achieved in the
eight-year history of the program.
NAPLAN is criticised by many in the
education sector who argue that the testing
puts too much pressure on schools, leads to
a crowded curriculum and involves teaching
to the test. The tests are held for a few hours
each year for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and
9 – hardly too onerous across a child’s entire
schooling. They are valid tests of literacy
and numeracy at a particular point in time
and thus are of value to schools assessing
their performance in the core skills of
literacy and numeracy. Many schools have
significantly improved their literacy and
numeracy outcomes as a result of measures
of performance obtained from NAPLAN.
“NAPLAN this
year was great
because we
learnt to read
over things and
were told if we really don’t
understand something to
make a logical guess. I think
that helped it to be easy.
I loved the Maths one the
best because I enjoy Maths
and it’s the thing I will most
likely do after school.”
JACINTA, YEAR 5 BERWICK.
Haileybury’s performance in the tests has
improved across time and we have also
seen a flow on to improved Year 12 results.
It is particularly pleasing that the 2015
results represent the best ever primary and
secondary performance by students at
Haileybury.
Haileybury’s Year 3 results were the second
best the School has produced and the Year
5 results were the best ever achieved by
students. The combined results were better
than 2013 when Haileybury was ranked the
number one co-education primary school in
Australia.
It was a similar performance in the secondary
testing with the combined Years 7 and 9
results being well ahead of previous very
highly ranked results.
One valid criticism of the testing has been
the slow turnaround of more than six months
from the testing period to the results being
released to schools. The Federal Government
has done an excellent job in reducing that to
three months in 2015, making the data more
relevant for improving student outcomes in
the year of the testing.
“NAPLAN shows
us where we
are ranked in
Australia in
numeracy and
literacy and how
we have improved over the
years completing the tests.
It’s also great practice for
exams in the future and
as it starts from an early
year you begin to get used
to it quite early in your
development as a student.”
NICHOLAS, YEAR 7 BRIGHTON.

Melbourne City
Council Approves
the Development of
Haileybury City
EARLIER THIS MONTH, MELBOURNE CITY COUNCIL OFFICIALLY AND UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE OPENING OF HAILEYBURY CITY –
MELBOURNE’S FIRST EARLY LEARNING CENTRE TO YEAR 12 INDEPENDENT SCHOOL CAMPUS IN THE CBD.
T
he outcome of the Council decision
was a terrific result for Haileybury as well
as Victorian parents looking for quality
schooling options in Melbourne’s CBD.
Haileybury City will aim to open its doors in
2016 with an Early Learning Centre; and Prep
to Year 10 is set to follow in 2017.
The new campus will accommodate 774
students across 10 levels and we have been
working with our architects to design a
state-of-the-art fit-out with some of the best
facilities of any leading school.
Some of the features of the new campus
will include 1,500 square metres of outdoor
green recreation spaces across three terraces;
an indoor sporting facility, which will include
a running track and an interactive space
for students to run, jump and climb; a
contemporary art, drama and music facility;
a custom-built, state-of-the-art science
facility; and each classroom will look directly
out onto the historic Flagstaff Gardens with
unobstructed views of the city landscape.
PAGE 4 The Haileyburian
The School program will follow Haileybury’s
acclaimed Academic program and has been
designed to meet the needs of busy parents.
The ELC will open for extended hours offering
pre and after school care, and for the first time,
the ELC program will be offered as a full-time
option.
The outcome of the Council
decision was a terrific result
for Haileybury as well as
Victorian parents looking for
quality schooling options in
Melbourne’s CBD.
The cosmopolitan CBD location also means
that students will benefit from an enhanced
educational program that includes a realworld approach to learning with unparalleled
proximity to Melbourne’s best cultural,
educational, historic and sporting precincts
and facilities.
We also see the new campus as being very
much a hub for Haileybury in the future. This
will provide great opportunities both for the
alumni network and also for students in other
campuses to connect with Melbourne in a
way that they might not have been previously
able to do.
Haileybury City will be an exciting next step
in the School’s 123-year history. We have had
such an overwhelming positive response from
the whole School community, and we know
families across Victoria are also very excited
about the new campus, with enquiries and
applications exceeding our expectations.
“At Haileybury, we believe that to be a
great world school, we’ve got to be a great
Melbourne school and this is the final step in
us giving the opportunity for all Melbournians
to be a part of the Haileybury education.”

RELATIONSHIPS WITH
SCHOOLS FROM
AROUND THE WORLD
IN ASIA, EUROPE
AND AMERICA.
ver the past few years the School has been further developing
its relationship with Newton North High School (NNHS) in
Boston, Massachusetts, and in particular our development
of a teacher collaboration program.
NNHS is a highly respected progressive school that encourages its
staff to explore innovative approaches to program design and delivery.
Haileybury was delighted to welcome David Bedar, Maureen Kavanagh,
Barbara Gibson and Samantha Mandel.
During their three-week visit to Haileybury the NNHS teachers
completed observations and worked with a range of leading teachers,
focusing on the areas of English, History, Science and Mathematics.
An area of considerable discussion was assessment, especially the
differences in how Haileybury moderates and prepares students for
exams compared to the American system, which is less rigid in terms
of curriculum with teachers designing their own courses and offering
these to students.
David provided interesting History lessons, especially from an American
perspective. Maureen participated in team teaching with Bernadette
McGrath in the English Department. Barbara visited many Science
classes. She is passionate about innovation and Science as well as
being an advocate for boosting the number of girls studying Science.
Samantha participated in Haileybury’s Languages Conference,
providing her perspective on global programs.

Great Australian
Spelling Bee
Champion
ANIRUDH KATHIRVEL (YEAR 5) WON THE FIRST GREAT AUSTRALIAN
SPELLING BEE, WHICH AIRED ON 9 SEPTEMBER 2015, ON CHANNEL 10.
On making it straight through to the grand final, Anirudh battled
against the best spellers from across the country in his age group to
claim his winning title. For the whole of Term 3, he had to keep details
of the show on the quiet side, as information was not allowed to be
shared. His Year 5 classmates were on camp when the final show aired,
and together his whole year level watched intently, supporting him
and eagerly waiting to find out the results.
With his family around him beaming with pride, he recalls this about
his winning moment: “There was just me and Grant; and he said wake
up, you won the great Australian Spelling Bee, and then I woke up and
finally started to open my eyes and everybody was celebrating and it
felt great”. We congratulate Anirudh on his outstanding efforts.
Haileybury Foundation
ALLI AND ZACK CHARLES
WERE THE RECIPIENTS OF
THE WILLIAM BUCKLAND
FOUNDATION INDIGENOUS
SCHOLARSHIP IN 2015.
W
ILLIAM BUCKLAND (OH ’40) is Haileybury’s oldest known
living alumni member. The Foundation bears the name
of William’s father – a highly successful businessman and
pastoralist in the middle years of the 20th Century. The Buckland
Foundation contributes approximately 50% of the scholarship with
Haileybury Foundation contributing the remaining funds.
Alli commenced in Year 7 and Zack in Year 6 and both attend
Haileybury’s Edrington Campus in Berwick. Both children agreed
that they are benefitting hugely from an education they wouldn’t
otherwise have had, had it not been for Haileybury Foundation
and the William Buckland Foundation. They believe the facilities are
amazing at Haileybury and that the curriculum is of a challenging
standard. Both children are enjoying the vast range of sport on
offer and both commented that the teachers are an extraordinary
help to them.
The siblings have a vast range of interests outside of Haileybury.
Both are keen basketballers, with Zack fanatical about the sport,
recently attending an Australian training session. Alli enjoys her
softball and athletics, particularly shot put. Alli is also enjoying the
cultural side of her Haileybury education. She hopes to take part
in next year’s Tattoo and her favourite subject is Art. She recently
made fish wind chimes as an Art project.
The contribution made by donors to Haileybury Foundation has a
long-lasting impact. Both children are hugely appreciative of the
immense support received from Foundation donors. Alli sends a
note of thanks for “helping me to improve at an amazing School”
while Zack thanks everyone for “this amazing opportunity... which
gives me a bigger chance to do what I want with my life”.
Haileybury Foundation is currently offering the following
scholarships thanks to the generosity of its donors and benefactors:

Haileybury in Concert
A SELL-OUT CROWD OF NEARLY 700 WERE DELIGHTED WITH THE
MUSICAL OFFERINGS AT THE FIRST HAILEYBURY IN CONCERT HELD IN
MID-AUGUST, IN THE GLORIOUS SURROUNDINGS OF THE ELISABETH
MURDOCH HALL AT THE MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE.
T
he students (nearly 300 from Years 5-12) were excited to be
performing in such a grand space and they all recognised how
a different acoustic enhanced their performances.
The program reflected an emphasis on music by living Australian
composers. It was particularly prestigious to have as our guests two
of these composers, Richard Mills and Brian Hogg.
There was also plenty of variety in terms of musical genres and styles.
This concert demonstrated the level of excellence of our student
performers in a number of different types and size of ensemble.
The first half was devoted to smaller ensembles and choirs. The music
spanned the ages from the 16th Century and traditional song, right
up to 2006. The second half featured our 55 to 74-member large
ensembles. The concert concluded with The Ascent, a commissioned
work that uses the School Hymn Lift Up Your Hearts as its melodic and
rhythmic inspiration. Head of Music Amanda Rowarth’s control over
the Symphony Orchestra and their stunning rendition of Finlandia
was outstanding, as was the following piece highlighting the Boys
Music Captain, Sol Dasika. Sol was the busiest musician on the night
featuring in more than
10 pieces. We look
forward to presenting
Haileybury in Concert
again in 2017.

The Complete Works of
Shakespeare (Abridged)
A large Senior School cast presented a
hilarious compression of all of Shakespeare’s
works to just 80 minutes. It may not have
been an entirely accurate rendition but it
definitely hit the funny bone of the audience.
The audience participation created some
anxiety on the faces of the front row but the
whole crowd eventually joined in with some
interesting chants representing the thinking
of Ophelia. The School had not seen such
inspirational hand waving since Countdown!
The cast are to be congratulated on their
comic timing and improvisational skill.

Middle School Musicals
TERM 3 PROVED TO BE A VERY BUSY TERM FOR
THE PERFORMING ARTS AT HAILEYBURY WITH THE
CAMPUSES EACH PRESENTING A MUSICAL.
Seussical
EDRINGTON KICKED OFF THE MUSICAL SEASON WITH THE COMICAL
SEUSSICAL; AND WHAT A SPECTACLE IT TURNED OUT TO BE WITH A
COMBINATION OF STUNNING COSTUMES AND SETS SUPPORTED BY
WONDERFUL LIGHTING. What was truly impressive was the stand-out
cast, with great individual performances from the likes of Caitlin de Silva
as Gertrude, Matthew Bennet as the Mayor, Ruby Hyland as Mayzie and
Pravir Das as the dear and sincere Horton the Elephant.
Hairspray
NEWLANDS PRESENTED HAIRSPRAY,
WHICH LEFT A HUGE IMPRESSION ON
THE WHOLE SCHOOL. Liam Kafka-
Sweeney and Lauren Henley were
strong characters that drove the
story and they were ably supported
by Shien Fujihara, Ruby Khuu and
Bhuvi Gupta who created very
funny roles. Daniel Casey was in
fine voice as Corny.
CASTLEFIELD FINISHED OFF THE MUSICAL
SEASON WITH GUYS AND DOLLS, WHICH
SAW AN INCREDIBLY STRONG, CONSISTENT
AND FOCUSED CAST PRODUCE A SHOW
WELL ABOVE A MIDDLE SCHOOL STANDARD.
Guys and Dolls
Ryan Peele and Beau Woodbridge led a
stellar ensemble of ‘Guys’ while Maddison
Butterworth and Olivia Craig led the huge
cast of ‘Dolls’. These four were perfect foils for
each other; they performed with motivated
timing and sang beautifully.

Boys APS Cross Country
Premiership
Girls APS/AGSV Hockey Premiership
THE GIRLS APS/AGSV HOCKEY TITLE
WAS VERY EAGERLY CONTESTED THIS
YEAR. The standard of hockey played
by all teams was arguably the best
seen at the APS for some time. The
Haileybury girls worked diligently
all year under the guidance and
coaching of Mrs Stefanie Eade and
Ms Kate Brown.
After dropping a game early to the highly talented Carey, the
Premiership looked all but lost; however, key victories later
in the season and Carey dropping a vital game saw our girls
playing their final game against Caulfield for the Premiership.
In a tightly fought game, Haileybury came through victors 1-0
after a Barbara Van Der Merwe goal. The signs look great for
girls hockey as many of the girls were Year 10 or below. Great
effort girls; we look forward to watching your future success.

THE BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM
CAPPED OFF A STELLAR SEASON BY
WINNING THE APS PREMIERSHIP. For the
last two seasons they have been runnersup; however, the sense of disappointment
burned strongly all season as they went
through undefeated. The team was ably
led by their Captains James Bott and Will
Armstrong. The two boys demonstrated
leadership throughout all the levels to
galvanise the team. Congratulations to Mr
Peter Walker, Craig Mottram and all the
coaches for their tireless efforts.

FEMALES MAKE UP APPROXIMATELY 50%
OF VIEWERS WATCHING AFL. It therefore
makes sense that AFL be offered as a sport
to females. AFL football for females is on
the rise and this was evident earlier this
year as the Haileybury Middle School girls
participated in the inaugural AFL Challenge
on the Rendall Oval.
The event showcased the skill of our
female participants while reinforcing
Haileybury’s ‘One School’ model. There
was plenty of laughter and colour, and the
event was conducted in a wonderful spirit.
Congratulations to all the girls who
participated and the staff for their
organisation.
Gymnastics State Title
CONGRATULATIONS
TO ZOE AGG (Year 8)
on her recent success
at the Victorian
State Gymnastics
Championships held
in Geelong. Zoe won
the overall State Title
(Level 7) as well as
finishing 1st in Floor
and 2nd on Beam and
Bars in the apparatus
finals. A great reward for a
lot of hard work!
RACHEL GUY, YEAR 11, AND NATHAN
EMPHRAUMS, YEAR 10, both dominated
the APS Hockey competition this year.
Among their many accolades this
season, both attended the National U/16
Hockey School Sport Championships
in Perth. Victoria finished 3rd in an
extremely tight-fought contest. Both
players once again shone and both
were named player of the tournament.
Girls Badminton Champions
TWO HAILEYBURY GIRLS BADMINTON
TEAMS have walked away successful
from the Badminton Victoria All Schools
Championships. The Haileybury 2nd
Team (Yo Yo Lan, Dora Wang, Anita Phan,
Amanda Tang and Irene Cam) won gold
in the second division whilst the 1st
Team took home the silver in the Open
Division. In the stifling heat a total of
three teams represented Haileybury.
Congratulations to all the girls involved.
AFL Representation
Ryan Ruffels – Asia-Pacific Golf Championship
RYAN RUFFELS RECENTLY COMPETED IN
THE PRESTIGIOUS SEVENTH ASIA-PACIFIC
AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP held on
1-4 October 2015, at The Clearwater Bay
Golf & Country Club in Hong Kong. The event
attracts the best amateur golfers from all
parts of the world. The winner of the event
received an invitation to compete in the
Masters Tournament.
Ryan was one shot off the lead when a
typhoon caused the final round to be abandoned. As a result of his performance, Ryan has
earned himself a place in the Open Qualifying Series with the opportunity to qualify for
the Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2016. We wish him all the very best.
PLAYING AT THE MCG ON AFL GRAND FINAL
DAY IS EVERY BOY’S DREAM, and Haileybury’s
Josh Battle, Year 10, and Jack Scrimshaw, Year
11, were able to do so. As a pre-cursor to the
Hawthorn-West Coast Grand Final, representing
the AIS Level One Side (the best 30 Under 17
footballers in the country), the pair took on the
Allies (the best Under 18s from the NT, NSW,
TAS and QLD). Both boys played well and we
look forward to seeing them in action again
next year for Haileybury.

Captains Corner
I am a firm believer that
with a voice, an education
and strong determination,
any person can change the
world for the better.
HARRISON JONES
My advice is to just enjoy it. Do your best in
your studies and leadership duties, but don’t
resent yourself for not doing as well as you
thought you would or should be doing. It’s
your last year at School; make it the best year!
THE HAILEYBURIAN SAT DOWN WITH HAILEYBURY GIRLS COLLEGE SCHOOL CAPTAIN BARBARA
VAN DER MERWE AND HAILEYBURY COLLEGE SCHOOL CAPTAIN HARRISON JONES AND ASKED
THEM TO REFLECT ON THEIR TIME AT HAILEYBURY AND WHAT THEY THINK THE FUTURE HAS IN
STORE FOR THEM.
What year did you start at Haileybury?
BARBARA: I started in Year 7 at Castlefield, 2010
HARRISON: Technically I started my time at
Haileybury in 2002 in ELC Brighton. After a
short seven-year break at my local primary
school, I was back in 2010 to start Year 7.
What subjects did you complete in Year 12?
BARBARA: In Year 12 – Chemistry, Maths
Methods, French and English, and in Year 11 –
Latin and Biology.
HARRISON: This year I am studying English,
Methods, Specialist and Global Politics after
having completed Revolutions in Year 11 and
Extended Investigation in Year 10.
What was your favourite subject and why?
BARBARA: My favourite subject was Latin,
without a doubt. It’s an incredibly difficult
subject, and although it may not have been
my strongest, I somehow found myself looking
forward to every class. This may have been
because I was extremely close with my class
mates due to having shared in the struggle
together since Year 8, or because we had
the most amazing, supportive teacher in the
School. Either way, my time studying Latin
will not be soon forgotten.
HARRISON: By a small margin above English
and Specialist, my favourite subject is Global
Politics. I have always been interested in
politics, both domestic and international, and
the course structure, which allows you to
write about something you saw on the news
the night before, on your exam the next day,
means the subject is always relevant and
engaging.
PAGE 16 The Haileyburian
What has been your most memorable
moment as School Captain?
BARBARA: My most memorable moment
as School Captain would be the afternoon
that Vice Captain Michael Strauss and I
spontaneously decided to spend an afternoon
in Newlands Junior School. We visited a few
classrooms, and it was incredible to see how
welcoming and excited all the little ones were.
They asked us questions about Senior School
and leadership. It really hit home that we were
their role models and that they were to grow
up and be in our exact positions one day! I lost
a maths times-table race to one of the Year 4
boys. Not my finest moment, but I’m extremely
impressed with the boy that beat me!
HARRISON: There have been so many
moments throughout the year which I look
back on with fond memories. Standing in
the middle of a busy quad at the Christmas
Quad Party (our first event of the year) which
we had spent hours organising, sitting in the
reception room of Caulfield Grammar meeting
the 20 other enormously talented APS School
Captains or even arriving at Liz Dawes’ house
at 8.00 pm on a Tuesday night because we had
sold out of RCD Fund merchandise in two days
during Brain Week. The thing that I will cherish
most for the rest of my life, however, will be
the opportunity to speak to over 1,000 of my
peers each week at assembly. When else in
my life will I have a medium like that through
which to communicate?
Do you have any advice for future School
Captains?
BARBARA: Even without leadership, Year 12 is
an absolute whirlwind of emotions. The added
pressure and expectation that is placed onto
you as a leader can be really overwhelming.
HARRISON: Firstly, never be afraid to take a
risk. Throughout the year you will face many
people who will scrutinise ideas that you are
proposing and tell you not to even try because
you are ‘destined to fail’. However, if you
never try, you can never succeed. Secondly,
create a strong team. From the start of this
year I adopted the mentality that Haileybury
College didn’t have one School Captain but
three; and working with Michael Strauss and
Michael Xing has made the year infinitely more
successful, manageable and enjoyable.
Favourite Haileybury memory
BARBARA: My best memory was most certainly
my last hockey game, if not the season in
its entirety. At the outset of the season, we
barely had enough players to field a team...
Winning the tournament wasn’t something
we even had our sights on. Nevertheless, the
championship became ours with an incredibly
nerve-racking grand final game. But what I
think makes it such a fond memory of mine
isn’t the win but rather the dynamics of the
team. We were truly a team, on and off the
field, one of which I am very proud of.
HARRISON: The hours spent backstage
before the Senior School Plays and Musicals
I have been involved in will be memories
that I cherish forever. The stress, nerves and
exhaustion means that everyone is willing
to sit around, have a laugh and enjoy each
others company.
In 10 years time I will be …
BARBARA: Happy. I have no idea where I’ll be,
what I’ll be doing, or what my bank account
is going to look like. Sure, I have my goals and
aspirations, but I know that if my dream to be
a millionaire before 2020 doesn’t work out, I’ll
still be happy wherever or with whoever I am
with. The future looks bright!
HARRISON: Trying to make a difference in
the world. I am not sure what exactly this will
be but I am a firm believer that with a voice,
an education and strong determination, any
person can change the world for the better.

Over a Century of Swimming
E
arly prospectuses emphasised the
benefits of sea air... and boarders and
resident masters were made to endure
the dank, wet conditions of the baths with a
regular early morning dip. They were charged
for a season ticket to the Brighton Beach Baths,
which were commonly the scene of their
ablutions for the year.
Swimming events held at Brighton Beach
and at Middle Brighton in the early 1900s
included curious events such as The Duck
Hunt, Go As You Please, Diving For Objects and
The All-Clothes Rave. Although intra-school
events took place from the start, Haileybury
first entered inter-school competition in 1911,
finishing a commendable 2nd against larger
teams. Abramowski was notable for winning
both his events. He won the Under 16 66yds
by a few inches only: the cunning Abe saw his
opponent neglect to touch the rope, made a
frantic grab at it and was awarded 1st place,
much to his delight! In 1913, the swimming
teacher Mr Southwell implemented a lifesaving course instructing students in rescue
and resuscitation methods.
A student of the 1920s bemoaned the baths’
archaic conditions, the gaps in the shark-proof
wall, the detritus in the water, the floating
fragments of picnickers’ lunches, and the four
stingrays tailing through. Another was moved
to verse:
Water to right of them,
Water to left of them,
Water all round them,
Shivering and frozen. ‘
Storm’d at with shout and yell,
Coldly they swam and well,
Into the briny depths,
Into the seething swell
Swam the ten boarders.
During the 1920s, enrolments were low, and
the annual swimming sports were abandoned
for some years until resuming in 1932.
Swimming was Haileybury’s best sport in the
1930s, although larger schools scored better in
inter-school competition.
THERE’S BEEN AN AFFINITY BETWEEN HAILEYBURY AND SWIMMING SINCE 1892. THE
FIRST SCHOOL SITE, WELLINGTON, WAS LOCATED BARELY 200 METRES FROM THE SEA
BATHS AT BRIGHTON BEACH.

coaching of George Lightfoot, Ian Greenaway,
leadership, so did swimming success. All boys

L
et me start by thanking every member
of the Haileybury network for making me
feel so welcome as the new President of
the Old Haileyburians Association (OHA).
The past couple of months have been a
whirlwind of activity, as I have ventured
to many functions and events since being
appointed by the OHA Senior Executive.
Firstly, I was lucky enough to take my family
along to watch the Old Haileybury Football
Club bring another VAFA Premiership Flag
back to the network, and then the OHA Senior
Executive joined the Club to celebrate this
momentous occasion at their annual OHA
Football Club Grand Final Breakfast. This event
has been running for close to 40 years and
I would strongly encourage any interested
alumni to attend next year’s event.
The start of October also saw the annual OHA
Golf Day held at the magnificent Huntingdale
Golf Club, with a field of over 100 golfers. It
was wonderful to see OHA members mixing
with current staff, students and parents on
what turned out to be a perfect day for a
social, yet slightly competitive, round of golf.
Most recently, I had the great pleasure of
personally welcoming more than 200 new
members to the OHA as part of the 2015
Boys Graduation Ceremony and look forward
to having them engage with the network as
they move into the next stage of their lives.
One of the stars of our OHA Senior Executive,
GRACE WONG (OH 2009), made the formal
presentations to the 2015 Girls Graduation
Ceremony.
Throughout each of these many and varied
engagements I have been able to get a gauge
on the OHA Community and to sum it up
as succinctly as possible – it is inspiring. The
network is active, it is positive, it is engaged
and it has a desire to keep pushing the bounds
of what is possible.
The common thread surrounding most of this
excitement can be boiled down to three key
items:
C Closer ties with the School than ever before
C Future opportunities for the OHA arising
within Haileybury City Campus
C The first alumni members joining from
Haileybury Beijing in 2016.
In recent statements I have discussed the
boundless opportunities that lie ahead for
both Haileybury and the OHA, and there is no
opportunity more fruitful than the Haileybury
City Campus. This new campus presents an
opportunity for the OHA to establish a base
in the heart of Melbourne and to provide a
central location for services and support to
all members of the alumni.
There are, however, significant challenges
facing the OHA and one of which is to build
the right support infrastructure for our
dedicated administration team. This will ensure
that we have the appropriate platform on
...there are a number of
very exciting projects that
are currently underway
which to continue to build both online and
offline experiences and relationships with our
network. These challenges have been clearly
identified by the OHA Senior Executive and
have been incorporated into the Strategic Plan.
As a result, there are a number of very exciting
projects that are currently underway and I look
forward to sharing the progress of each of
these projects in the coming months.
Stay tuned.

YOHA sign, professional photography and
videography, a live Instagram feed,
renowned DJ KHANH ONG (OH 2009) and
beautiful canapés. The success of the
event continued well after the evening
had concluded with over 55,000
Facebook views of photos from the
night recorded the next day.

OHAFC PREMIERS IN 2015
OLD HAILEYBURY AFC CAPPED OFF A
MEMORABLE SEASON TO CLINCH THE C
GRADE PREMIERSHIP IN A WONDERFUL
DISPLAY OF FOOTBALL AGAINST MONASH
BLUES IN MID-SEPTEMBER.
What seemed to be an impossibility with
one round to go in the season turned into a
probability during the finals with the team
gelling and making their opposition look
second-rate.
Old Haileybury snuck into 4th position, having
to win the last game of the season against Old
Camberwell. Convincing finals victories against
Old Ivanhoe and Marcellin gave the club
tremendous confidence going into the Grand
Final, despite having lost to Monash Blues
on two occasions throughout the season.
However, after three quarters of even football,
The Bloods came out to play in the final
quarter. In what has been described as one of
the finest quarters of Old Haileybury football
ever, we kicked five goals to zero to proudly
hoist the Cup. It was an amazing victory and
one that will be remembered for a long time
to come. Special congratulations to COREY
CONNELLY (OH 2015) who becomes the first
current student to play in an Old Haileybury
Premiership team.
The Premiership was particularly special as
it was the first since 2006 and came with 17
current or former students as part of the team.
They were: JOHN NICOLOPOULOS (OH 2008),
NATHAN WAITE (OH 2004), JOSHUA DAWSON
(OH 2010), PETER GLEADHILL (OH 2009), ED
LIMON (OH 2008), HAMISH MCLAUCHLAN
(OH 2000), JORDAN TOY (OH 2010), JORDAN
DONNELLY (OH 2010), COREY CONNELLY (OH
2015), JAMES PAUL (OH 2010), NICK HARRISON
(OH 2004), LACHIE TREVERTON (OH 2014),
AARON TOY (OH 2013), ALEX WOLTERING (OH
2012), TIM WITHEROW (OH 2012), NICK GOODA
(OH 2009) and MICHAEL STOWE (OH 2006).
We now head back into the Premier B section
in 2016 with renewed focus and vigour. Let’s
hear from the Coach, Daniel Hughes on his
take on the season:
What is your football background – playing,
coaching etc?
I grew up in Ballarat and played all my junior
football at Sebastopol. I moved to Melbourne
in my mid 20s and after a year of playing back
there I joined Cheltenham FC in Southern
Div 1. I played there for 10 years. I started my
coaching as a playing coach in the reserves,
and then later joined the senior coaching
group as an assistant. I moved to Old
Melburnians Premier B VAFA as an assistant
where I spent three seasons before being
approached to join Old Haileybury in 2015.
What attracted you to the role at Old
Haileybury?
Obviously the opportunity to be a Senior
Coach was a great attraction in its own right,
but having spent three seasons and seeing Old
Haileybury as an opposition I was impressed
with the character of the youth, the facilities
and the history.
What challenges did you face during the
season and conversely what were the shining
lights of the home and away season?
Many challenges including being a Senior
Coach for the first time – this can be
intimidating. The playing group had just
experienced relegation, so there were many
who were disappointed and potentially not
enjoying their football.
There were many shining lights – Four School
boys had the opportunity to experience senior
football for the first time. Six Under 19s also
played senior football. Having the chance
to experience finals football in our first year
together and then to win three finals including
the premiership was amazing.
You entered the finals series finishing in
4th position. What were your expectations
heading into the finals?
Realistically, my expectations were for
the group to experience finals football and
learn from that.
A Premiership in your first year as coach:
does it get any better than that?
Quite simply, no, it doesn’t get any better.
It was and remains the best day of my life
in football.
You have signed on again for next season.
What are your expectations for the Club as
they head into Premier B in 2016?
Having spent three seasons in Premier B,
I know the competition will be harder again.
But I’m really confident we can continue to
improve and the brand of football we play
will be hard to beat. There is no doubt that
with the confidence we gained from the finals
series, we can approach the opposition with
no fear.

Dance
ON THE 15 AUGUST, THE OHA DANCE
TEAM COMPETED IN THE DANCE STAR
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE
GOLD COAST. Having trained weekly
since February, the team are proud
to announce that their hard work has
paid off. Haileybury’s ‘Imperial’ walked
away from the competition with gold
medals and one of the highest scores
of the day: a whopping 95.5 out of 100.
OCTOBER CAME AROUND AND THE
EXCITEMENT LEVEL SHOT THROUGH THE
ROOF WITH EIGHT OHA MENS, WOMENS AND
MIXED TEAMS PLAYING OVER THE SUMMER
MONTHS. The OHA Touch Club has exploded
and has been delighted to announce two
additional teams comprising of both boys and
girls currently still at School.
With the season commencing, it has been
abuzz with over 100 current and OHA students
involved. Games are played at either Albert
Park on Tuesday nights or Fawkner Park on
Wednesdays. The camaraderie and fun that
happens over these nights is contagious, with
the hope of growing the Club to even greater
heights.
The team would love to thank Mel
Ault, their dedicated coach, and the
OHA for their support and funding
which assisted with costumes and
travel to nationals. Interested dancers
should contact AMBER FYFE (OH 2010)
at [email protected] to register their
interest in joining the Club.

THE OHA NETBALL CLUB HAS BEEN
VERY COMPETITIVE THIS SEASON,
WITH BOTH OUR WOMENS AND
MIXED TEAMS PROGRESSING
THROUGH TO FINALS. The Mixed
team did a great job and placed
in the top 3 spots for division 1/2;
however, we unfortunately lost the
final by 1 point. The Womens team
was particularly strong also placing in
the top 3 within their division. All the
girls worked incredibly hard and rallied
together, which resulted in a grand
final win for the Club!
Next season, all three teams will be returning to play on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday nights. As our Haileybury community is widely spread we will be playing
at three different locations to better accommodate the players. Competitions will
be held at Springers Leisure Centre, Monash University Clayton Campus and Glen
Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre (GESAC). There is plenty of time to still join if anyone is
interested in playing in the upcoming season, please feel free to contact SOPHIE
LEGGOS (OH 2008) at [email protected]

Hockey
THE OHA HOCKEY CLUB ENDURED MIXED
SUCCESS AND EMOTIONS THROUGHOUT
THE 2015 YEAR. The beginning of the year
was fantastic with the Summer team making
the Grand Final of the competition played
at Waverley. The Grand Final itself was a
tough game, playing against the top of the
ladder Casey Cannons; however, as valiant as
OHA were, Casey was too strong in the end,
winning 2-1.
The Womens team was attempting to make it
back into the finals in 2015. With most of the
same side returning, confidence was high and
they quickly became the dominant side in the
competition. Great performances from team
leaders such as Alison Graham and Haylee
Minness, and countless goals scored from
DyVy Nguyen and Lauren Barnes made sure
that they finished the season on top. Towards
the end of the season though, the team’s
goalkeeper, Milly Rowett, suffered a long-term
injury. Anooki Keyte courageously put on the
pads and made some stunning saves in the
last couple of games and the finals series. The
injuries within the team took their toll, though,
and the Womens team were knocked out of
the finals by our rivals, Collegians, 2-0.
PAGE 24 The Haileyburian
The Mens teams were looking to make
improvements on the low placing from the
previous year. After hiring a new coach and
bringing in a talented young forward, DAVID
SAN (OH 2012), there was optimism around
the squad. However, a few players moved
overseas early in the season and some seasonending injuries hurt the team and put us
under major pressure.
Jon Blackman was the star for the first half of
the year, always trying the give other players
the best opportunity to attack. In the second
half of the year, CALLUM PULLYBLANK
(OH 2011) was
magnificent in keeping
out many goals.
Opposition coaches and
players consistently admired his skill in saving
shots. Unfortunately, the Mens sides couldn’t
quite mirror the success of the women, both
ending up at the bottom of the table.
Many thanks to the coaches of all teams
this year. They provided guidance and
encouragement when needed. The Best and
Fairest for the Womens side was Lauren Barnes,
while for the Mens 1sts, the winner was Callum
Pullyblank, and for the 2nds, SHANE MCLAWS
(OH 2012).
ALISTAIR BLACKMAN (OH 2002)
Where are they now?
HON JUSTICE LEX
LASRY (OH ‘66)

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran on
death row. He has also publicly opposed
the death penalty as a judge. Justice Lasry
was previously the president of the Victorian
section of the International Commission of
Jurists. In 2007, Justice Lasry was awarded the
inaugural Law Council of Australia President’s
Medal for his pro bono work during his career

Championships in Russia. Josh finished in
14th position in the 200m backstroke event.
DR DAVID GRUEN (OH ‘71) is Deputy Secretary,
Economics in the Department of the Prime
Minister and Cabinet. He is one of Australia’s
most prominent economists. He was a key
influencer in policy advice regarding the GFC
and commodity boom in Australia and was
tipped to be the next head of the Australian
Bureau of Statistics but joined the Prime
Minister’s office instead. He is also Australia’s
G20 sherpa (the sherpas are the main,
important representatives at G20 summits;
they do the negotiating and speaking

then the world leaders make the decisions) for
this year’s G20 summit in Turkey in November.
Congratulations to JACK

This November, DAVE DE KRESTER (OH ‘90)
and his wife Simone will be embarking on an
exciting and challenging fundraising journey,
