Just when we thought golf was heading for
another era of domination by an elite minority,
along came 2016. And nowhere was the new
democracy better seen than in the men’s Majors.
Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory
McIlroy were the men of the moment
coming into the year. They had seemed
to get away from the chasing pack,
taking their game to levels not seen
since Tiger Woods was in his prime.
But, just to highlight how competitive
the sport is, none of Day, Spieth or
McIlroy managed to pick up a Major title.
In fact, the remarkable beauty of 2016
has been that every Major has brought
a new winner to the circle. It started with
The Masters and Englishman Danny
Willett triumphing. Then Dustin Johnson,
who probably ought to have picked up
one before, walked away with his first,
the US Open.
Henrik Stenson, at a ripe 40, compared
to the youngsters on the tee, earned his
first when he out-duelled Phil Mickelson
at Royal Troon, to raise the Claret Jug. And
finally Jimmy Walker’s nerve held as he
led from start to finish to secure his first
Major, The PGA Championship. Our own
Branden Grace was in the shake-up late
on the final afternoon and surely his first
Major victory is a matter of when, not if.
This month we feature Stenson on
the cover and if anyone has earned his
stripes, it’s this Swede. He’s one of the
jokers on the tour but also a nice guy
and a familiar face to South Africans,
who have seen him repeatedly produce
excellent golf at the Nedbank Golf
Challenge at Sun City.
Elsewhere, we knock on Richard
Sterne’s door and catch up with a golfer
who has all the talent – yes, to even win
a Major – but whose career has been
rather topsy-turvy in recent times. Let’s
hope the popular South African has
again turned the corner and that there
are many more big pay cheques and
glittering silverware lying ahead of him.
We have a look back at the first
Olympic golf tournament since 1904
and apologies in advance for not
featuring the women in Rio; our
deadlines required that we got the
magazine off to the printers before
they played, so that you could receive
your September issue on time.
Later this month is the much
anticipated Ryder Cup, featuring the
United States and Europe. (One wonders,
given the Brexit vote, whether that’s
going to change back to GB and Ireland
and Europe?)
Matchplay golf is a fascinating format
and the Olympic organisers probably
missed a trick by not incorporating 36
strokeplay holes and then matchplay
knockout to determine the medals.
But Hazeltine at the end of September
will see the US trying to take control
back from Europe.
As always, enjoy the read and
your feedback is welcome, while we
encourage you to ‘like’ our Compleat
Golfer Facebook page.
