21st Century IP Landscape
Collaboration in advanced manufacturing as a business strategy
How can makers convert intellectual property (IP) into new products,
businesses or monetization?
1. Trust
2. Commercial Collaboration
3. Crowd Opportunity
AutoHarvest.org is a non profit foundation that created and operates a neutral
e-collaboration marketplace for IP in advanced manufacturing.
It offers a dynamic ecosystem for innovators and commercializers to meet and
transact earlier in the innovation cycle, and form relationships on a direct
principal to principal basis.

Inflatable Seat Belts: Ford/ United Technologies
Ford to License Patented Inflatable Safety Belt Technology to Encourage
Expanded Adoption (Press Release June 2014)
• Ford to offer intellectual property for inflatable safety belt system that
enhances protection for seated passengers – especially children/the elderly
• Ford also purchased additional inflatable safety belt patents from United
Technologies Corp. to ensure that this technology could be broadly
licensed. This effort was made easier with the help of AutoHarvest
Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the adoption
of new technologies by providing unprecedented access to innovators and
businesses.
•
“We founded AutoHarvest with the hopes this type of technology sharing could be
realized for the betterment of society,” said David E. Cole, chairman for AutoHarvest.
•
“Car manufacturers have certainly achieved iconic status in the past; maybe, by
continuing their progressive approach to leveraging their intellectual property for the
common good, they can become business icons once again.” IAM April 2014

Benefits: Relationships and Transactions
1. System casts a wide net to broadcast to entire membership or a subset a
technology need, solution or capability. Find needles in a haystack.
2. Private communication system enables “speed dating”. Highly functional
private collaboration rooms allow on-the-fly deep dive due diligence and
project management capabilities.
3. All internet systems are hackable: AutoHarvest takes members to the third
“date” and then you and your new partner follow established protocol to
disclose confidential information off line.
4. Innovation Hub provides software, databases, services, content and
emerging “smart-tools”.
