In a great new series, former Wold Champion
Tommy Pickering will be solving the most
common angling mistakes he sees on the bank
I
N EASY-to-follow picture sequences and
diagrams, the straight-talking and hugely
knowledgeable Yorkshire match ace will
show you exactly how to master the basics
and become a better angler.
Tommy, a qualified angling coach, sees the
same mistakes time and time again when
teaching young and not-so-young anglers and
has drawn up a list of the most common errors.
In these pages over the next year he will put
right these small but significant shortfalls.
This month it’s how to correctly construct,
shot and store a pole float rig.

Tactics
STEP ONE how to make a ‘professional’ pole rig
1
Tommy always paints a new pole float body with
clear nail varnish hardener. This toughens the
body and eye, and prevents water seepage
3
Cut three sections of float rubber – two short
(about 5cm) and one twice as long. (Preston
Micro Silicone packs contain popular sizes)
6
The top short rubber sits just below the body. The
second one sits in the centre, and the long one
overlaps the bottom. This helps prevent tangles

shot, nail varnish
hardener and line
Select the correct size float rubbers that fit snuggly
on your chosen float stem. Not too tight as line has to
go through as well, or too slack or it won’t grip
4
Push the rig line through the eye. Tommy only uses
0.17mm diameter (6lb 12oz) Preston Reflo Power for
99% of his commercial carp pool pole rigs
7
Tommy uses oblong Preston Stotz in sizes 8, 9 and
10, rather than round split shot. These are easier to
put on thick line, and don’t ping off as readily
9
5
Thread the two short rubbers on to the line,
followed by the long one. Lubricate the bottom of
the float stem with spit and push on each rubber
8
Add two, No 10 ‘tell-tale’ dropper shot. Push
these together a few centimetres below the
stem, then add the bulk shot above them
10
Use a loop tyer to create a loop in the end of the
line. This is the loop-to-loop attachment for your
hooklength which should be
exactly six inches long. Don’t
make small loops. Larger,
more flexible loops give a
more natural fall of bait
TURN OVER
It’s trial and error but the target is to shot the float so that exactly half the length of the bristle
(sight tip) shows above the water. The weight of the line when fishing will dot the tip down correctly

loop tyer and how to
safely store your rig

STEP TWO how to correctly use a loop tyer
1
First double-up six inches of your chosen line.
It’s much easier to work with a bigger loop
6
This is the tricky bit. The loop in your fingers
must go over the tyer head and into its mouth
STEP THREE
Correct shotting
One of the most important items of angling
equipment you can buy is a six-inch (30cm)
ruler, says Tommy.
This will be used to precisely position
dropper shot and bulk shot on float rigs
so that they fish prefectly and there’s less
chance of tangles when shipping or casting.
2
Hook the neck of the loop tyer into the doubledup section of line that you have created
7
Pull the line tight in this direction with the loop
tyer head pointed away from the end of the line
3
You need to secure both ends of line with your
fingers and thumb and pull the line tight
8
Another tricky bit. Reverse the loop tyer head and
gently pull the line down in the direction shown
STEP FOUR store your rig on a Preston Double Slider Winder
1
2
Most pole winders have a deep side, and a flat,
shallow side. It is vital that the float sits in the deep
side so the whole body is protected (pics above)
3
Place the lowest No.10 dropper shot hard
against the knot of the loop on the rig line.
Using your ruler measure exactly 6in above
this and add the other dropper. The bulk
shot will be positioned exactly 6in above
this. This is perfect for depth of 3ft or more.
66 • IYCF Issue 283
Choose the correct length winder for the length
of your float. The float MUST sit completely
inside the winder cage with no part protruding, as
the float could otherwise easily be damaged
Layout the full length of your rig and start by
placing your hookpoint in the special triangularshaped retention slot between the side rails
Tactics
4
This is the ‘cat’s eye’ you
should see before the
correctly-tied loop-toloop is tightened
5
When tightened,
the correct loopto-loop snugs down
to this shape and is
incredibly strong
To form the knot correctly twizzle the loop tyer in
the direction shown by the arrows above
Two twizzles is all you need for a secure knot but
some well-known anglers use three or four
9
10
If you tie it
incorrectly you’ll
end up with this,
a ‘lark’s tail’ knot
that is 50 per cent
weaker!
To finish, pull the line off the curved nose and the
loop springs off the bottom jaw to the nose
4
Wind on the full length of the rig, making sure
that the bulk shot sits clear of the winder edge so
that it isn’t deformed as it curls round the top
5
This is the finished loop. All you need to do now is
to release it from the curved nose
TOP TiP
Use a winder with an
integral line retaining
system like these
Preston ones that
do away with rubber
winder anchors
The finished rig. Store
this in a seatbox
winder tray with the
float uppermost. Write
full details of the rig
on the side of the
winder
Slip the loop on the end of your rig over the peg on
the sliding line retaining clip and push to hold the
rig in place. Not too tight as this causes kinks
