Introduction - Padlocks
UNION offer a wide range of padlocks covering all levels of security, suitable for both commercial and domestic use.
UNION padlocks can be supplied individually keyed or suited with other UNION products such as cylinders and
cabinet locks.
Features and Functions
The following diagram gives an overview of the main features and functions of a UNION padlock. For a full
explanation of terminology, please refer to the glossary on page 0.10 in the introduction at the front of the catalogue.
Body
Shackle
Materials
Padlock shackles and bodies
are manufactured from a
variety of materials to give the
correct balance of strength,
hardness and corrosion
protection for its particular
application.
The U shaped metal bar used to
attach the lock to the hasp or chain.
There are three styles of shackle as
follows:
Standard length
Ball Locking
UNION High Security padlocks
feature a ball locking mechanism,
which is amongst the most secure
locking mechanisms available.
Hardened steel ball bearings are
pushed outwards to engage with
round indents on the shackle. This
type of mechanism offers extreme
resistance to torsion and pull
attack.
Extended shackle
offering greater clearance from the
body, which may be required in certain
applications
Closed shackle
where the body of the padlock is
extended to cover the shackle offering
greater protection from shackle attack
Keys
Cylinder Plug
UNION padlocks are available with either
4-pin, 5-pin, 6-pin, KESO or DTEC cylinder.

Key Control Systems
UNION padlocks are all unlocked using a key. Some can be snaplocked without the
need for a key, whilst others will require the key for locking as well as unlocking.
UNION padlocks can be supplied individually keyed, keyed alike, keyed to pass or
masterkeyed. See individual product pages for details.
Finishes
UNION standard padlocks are available in brass body finish. UNION High Security
padlocks are available in mirror chrome finish. See individual product pages for details.
