3: SUMMARY
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free standing mountain in the world.
Rising 5895m from the East African plains, it is capped by Uhuru
Peak – meaning “freedom” in Swahili. Standing on this frosty peak
puts you on the Roof of Africa– where you can gaze down on the
clouds, and up at acres of blue sky.
Known as the Whisky Route, since it offers a more authentic
experience than the busier Coca Cola Marangu Route, Machame
follows a quieter path to the summit. This 10-day adventure will take
you from the bustling town of Moshi, through rainforests, over
moorland & alpine desert, to the eternal snow which caps this iconic
mountain.
Our programme is designed to give you the best chance of reaching
the summit safely– with a carefully selected menu, highly
experienced & qualified guides, and an itinerary which
follows the principles of “walk high, sleep low” to allow for proper
acclimatisation.
Nothing can match the feeling of reaching the summit with your
team, and watching the sun rise over the African plains. This trip truly
is a must for anyone with a sense of adventure!

5: ITINERARY
DAY 1
If you are on the flights inclusive option, upon arrival you will
be collected from the airport and transferred to your hotel
in Moshi. This sleepy town on the lower slopes of Mount
Kilimanjaro is Tanzania’s coffee capital, and has a unique
faded charm. At 800m, Moshi is the staging point for many
climbs of the mountain which dominates the skyline. In the
evening there will be a Kilimanjaro briefing and equipment
check before dinner. A member of the Childreach
International team will deliver a briefing on tomorrow’s
project visit.
DAY 2
Today we will visit a nearby school, where you can see the
work Childreach International are doing firsthand. This is an
emotional day, and a highlight of the trip for many. We’ll
meet with a member of the Childreach International
Tanzania team, who will discuss their projects in the area.
Before leaving, we will have the chance to meet some of
the teachers and children from the school, with plenty of
opportunity for games and dancing. After transferring back
to the hotel, we’ll grab an early night.
DAY 3
After an early breakfast, we will transfer by bus to the
Machame Gate. Here we will sign in to the national park,
and meet our expert team of guides and porters. It all
starts here.
We will begin a steady trek through a humid rainforest,
teeming with wildlife, before reaching Machame Hut
campsite at 2980m. If the skies are clear, we will have our
first view of the peak! We will have a delicious 3-course
dinner before heading to our tents.

6: ITINERARY
DAY 4
We will start with an early breakfast, before continuing our
ascent to Shira Hut at 3850m. Lunch will be provided en
route. Throughout today we will catch tantalising glimpses
of Kilimanjaro’s peak through the trees, as we climb wide
ridges and mountain pathways.
We will arrive at Shira Hut campsite in the late afternoon.
For the first time we will look down on clouds below us,
while watching the sun set over distant Mount Meru. We’ll
end the day with a 3-course hot dinner.
DAY 5
Today is an acclimatisation day. We will trek up to Lava
tower, before descending to Barranco Hut campsite.
Trekking high & sleeping low aids acclimatisation. After
stopping for lunch at the ancient volcanic plug of Lava
Tower, we will descend, enjoying stunning views of the
Western Breach on the way down. Barranco Camp has
some stunning views of the peak high above and Moshi
town far below. Since there is no light pollution at this
altitude, the night sky is an unforgettable blanket of a
million bright stars.
DAY 6
After breakfast, we will scale the Barranco Wall - an
imposing rock formation. From the top of the wall, we will
cross the Karanga Valley. At these altitudes there is very
little vegetation or animal life, save for the occasional crow.
We will reach Barafu campsite (4673m) in the late afternoon - our last stop before the summit. We will camp on a
stony ridge, with views dominated by the summit of Mt
Kilimanjaro and the spectacular open vista of the vast
plains below. We will get some rest in the early evening.

DAY 7
This is it! We will leave camp at around midnight and start
our summit bid. We will take things slowly, as the route is
steep. The reward for all this effort? At Stella Point you will
witness the most spectacular sunrise - as the glowing sun
illuminates the southern slopes and plains far beyond. After
a final push, we will then reach the roof of Africa – the
5895m Uhuru Peak. After savouring the moment, we will
descend to Bafaru Camp to grab a few hours rest, before
descending to Mweka Hut campsite. Moving from the
frosty summit to the lush rainforests in a few hours.
DAY 8
We will have a relaxed start to the day, with time to share
songs & dancing with our guides and porters in the shadow of Uhuru Peak. The final day of walking is easy-going,
through
scenic
forest
on
established
pathways. The sound of chattering monkeys and birds will
accompany you on the walk down to Mweka Gate. Here
you will sign your name in the register, to be used for your
summit certificate. After transferring by bus to the hotel for
showers, we will toast our success at a celebratory dinner!
DAY 9 - 15
If you have booked on the flights inclusive option, today
you will start your independent travel time in Tanzania. It’s
up to you what you chose to do with your free time. Rare
Adventures are pleased to offer some great value trip
extensions in Tanzania & Zanzibar. Each of these trips has
been fully risk assessed and quality tested, to make sure
you and your team get value for money and can book in

9: TRANSIT VISA
If you will be travelling to Tanzania via Kenya, you will need a Kenyan Transit Visa.
Before leaving the airport, you will need to get a transit visa from Kenyan customs. The
transit visa costs $20 each way, so $40 in total. We recommend that you travel with
$40, and keep this with your passport in order to pay for your transit visa each way.
VACCINATIONS
Please consult with your doctor or travel nurse about what vaccinations you will need
for travel to Tanzania. Everyone’s needs are different, and your own medical
circumstances will affect which vaccinations and medications you are able to take.
Please be aware that travel clinics may charge a premium for vaccinations and
medications, so always speak with your GP first
You can find more information on
Tanzania on the NHS Fit for Travel website:

YELLOW FEVER
All travellers coming from areas with risk of yellow fever transmission, or those who
spend more than 12 hours in transit in an at-risk area, must carry a Yellow Fever
Vaccination Certificate when entering Tanzania. Those without a Yellow Fever Certificate
must carry a valid letter of exemption, signed by their doctor.
A Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate or a valid letter of exemption must also be
presented when entering the Sultanate of Zanzibar.
DRINKING WATER
Safe, drinking water is provided throughout your time on the mountain. This water is collected from the
mountain streams, then boiled and filtered. You may notice that at times the water retains as slight colouration,
however it is perfectly safe to drink.
Water purification tablets are essential for anyone trekking on Kilimanjaro, to ensure that water stored in your
bottle or water bag is kept clean. You may wish to bring some neutralising tablets to take away the taste of the
purification tablets, or use flavoured tablets.

11: SPENDING MONEY
All meals, transfers and accommodation required as part of your Kilimanjaro climb are
included. You will need to bring spending money to cover any additional travel you take
part in, souvenirs, alcoholic drinks and other expenses such as tips.
The Tanzanian Shilling is a closed currency, which means you cannot bring the
currency in or out of the country. We recommend bringing cash (USD or GBP), which
can be exchanged for Tanzanian Shillings in Moshi, or bringing a cash card you can use to withdraw from an
ATM (bear in mind your bank may charge for this service). Also, be sure to inform your bank you are travelling
before leaving the UK to avoid any issues.
Please bear the following costs in mind when planning how much spending money to bring:

$40 for your Kenyan transit visa ($20 each way)

$80 recommended tip for your Kilimanjaro guides and porter team

$45 for souvenirs and mementoes– it depends on how much you want to bring home!

$80—$150 per day for independent travel

If you will be booking your own flights from Zanzibar, an exit tax of $50 is payable
We recommend budgeting between $400—$800, depending if you plan to travel after your climb. Please be
aware that if you are booking your own flights or independent travel, you will be responsible for the costs of
any transfers, taxis and accommodation.
SOCIAL MEDIA
If you have family and friends back at home who would like to keep track of your
progress on the mountain, we can post daily updates tracking your climb on our

13: TRAINING
Our menu, acclimatisation schedule and guides will give you a great chance of reaching the top, however you
can do a lot to improve your chances by training in advance. Everyone who takes part in the Mount Kilimanjaro
adventure should be comfortable walking for long periods. Preferably, you should also be comfortable walking
6km at a moderate pace while carrying a 5 - 10 kg pack.
WALKING TRAINING
You will walk every step of the way from Machame Gate to the summit, and back again - over uneven, steep
terrain. Mount Kilimanjaro is like a marathon, not a sprint! This climb is about endurance, and you must be
comfortable walking 6km at a moderate pace while carrying a 5 - 10 kg pack. By preparing the muscles used
for trekking, you will recover quicker at the end of each day, and wake up with less aches & pains.
RESISTANCE TRAINING
While cardio training and preparing your body for the rigours
trekking are essential, some resistance training will also prove very helpful.
of
prolonged
periods
of
Hiking will place strain on your knees and back so it is a good idea to focus on these
areas. When training, it’s not about lifting the heaviest weight you can. Do exercises in sets, starting with lighter
weights as this will build up endurance rather than bulk.
ELEVATION CHART
The chart below shows the daily elevation for each camp and acclimatization hike. By gradually progressing to each camp and taking
our time, your body will have the best chance of adjusting to the increased altitude.

16: BOOKING YOUR OWN FLIGHTS
If you choose to book your own flights and meet our team in Tanzania, there are different options when it
comes to choosing which airport to fly into. Please see below for some more information of these options.
Regardless of which option you chose, we recommend you book your flights no later than 3 months before the
start of your climb. Some routes can sell out quickly, meaning prices increase sharply - especially during peak
trekking season.
FLIGHTS INTO NAIROBI
Nairobi is a major travel hub for East Africa, and the airport here serves many
destinations. If you are booking your own flights, it is possible to book a flight to
Nairobi and transfer by land south into Tanzania.
Riverside Shuttle run regular, reliable services between Nairobi and Arusha /
Moshi (http://www.riverside-shuttle.com). It’s best to book these online through
their website, as the buses can sometimes be full up on the day.
Expected cost of flights: 600 - 900 GBP
FLIGHTS INTO KILIMANJARO AIRPORT
We recommend flying directly to Kilimanjaro Airport. The team hotel is a short taxi ride from the airport, and you
can jump into a taxi outside the airport terminal, but be sure to agree a fare beforehand.
Expected cost of flights: 600 - 1200 GBP
FLIGHTS INTO DAR ES SALAAM
Many flight operators run routes into Dar es Salaam, on the Eastern Coast of Tanzania.
You can catch a Dar Express bus from Dar es Salaam to Arusha via Moshi. Tickets can be booked at the Dar
Express counter at the airport, or at the Dar Express terminal at the Ubungo Bus Terminal in the city. Tickets
should cost no more than $20 / 25,000TSh.
Expected cost of flights: 600 - 1200 GBP
PLEASE NOTE
If you are booking your own flights, your services with Rare Adventures will start when you arrive at the team
hotel on day 2, and end on day 10 of the itinerary. You are responsible for making your own way to the
hotel, and to the airport to catch your flight home.
Rare Adventures will not be able to offer support outside of period of service, and it is your responsibility to
ensure you have correctly booked flights and transfers.

charity, and ensure the maximum amount of fundraising goes to the cause you want to support.
Passengers travelling on a group ticket must all depart and return on the same date. If you wish to stay in country for longer, return early, or arrive early, then you should opt to book your own flights.
SWITCHING GROUPS
In some circumstances, it may be necessary for you to switch groups. We will always try to minimize any costs
incurred as a result of this, however if we need to secure extra flights or additional accommodation there may be
unavoidable fees.
Also, please note that if you switch groups your original flight preference will be carried over unless you request
to change this option.

18: TRAVEL ASSISTANCE
Adventure travel sometimes doesn’t run smoothly. Whether it’s a lost passport or a tummy upset– sometimes we all need a little bit of extra help to get things sorted. In the event
of an emergency incident, Rare Adventures run a 24/7 assistance line for all of our clients.
One of our team will be on standby to help coordinate a response to any
incidents, and to manage communications with next of kin and insurers back in the UK.
Such incidents include, but aren’t limited to:



Missed flights
Illness or injury
Crime
Whatever the issue, if it can’t be handled by our in-country team, then call our Rare Care support line.
The team leader of each group will be issued with a Rare Connect mobile phone, to be used in emergencies.
PLEASE SAVE THIS NUMBER IN YOUR CONTACTS:

20: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE DO I NEED?
Kilimanjaro is a trekking peak, which means you will not need any technical climbing
skills or training to reach the summit. Our team will follow an established trekking
route, and our guides will take the lead. We advise that all clients have
experience of hill walking in the UK, and are comfortable hiking for up to 6 hours per
day with a 5-10kg pack.
HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE?
All participants should be in very good physical condition, preferably able to trek for 6 hours per day with a 5 10 kg pack. You will spend prolonged periods at altitude during the climb, and the effects of this are not be
underestimated. We allow for plenty of time to acclimatize, however we do recommend you consult with your
GP if you are unsure.
All participants with pre-existing medical conditions will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire with their
GP.
DO I NEED ANY SPECIALIST KIT?
The right kit can be the difference between a successful climb and one that ends early. Take a look at the kit list
in this brochure for more details on the gear we recommend. Selected items are available for hire.
WILL I NEED ANY VACCINES?
The NHS recommends a course of anti-malarial medication, along with primary courses & boosters. Vaccinations against cholera, hepatitis B, rabies & Yellow Fever are also
recommended for consideration. Please refer to NHS Fit for Travel for more information: http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk
HOW MUCH SHOULD I BUDGET FOR THIS ADVENTURE?
Will need to cover the cost of your visa (£40), vaccinations (est. £100 - £300) and insurance (Rare Care policy
£94, other policies are available). You will also need to purchase kit and accessories (cost varies depending on
personal preference). All transfers and accommodation in the itinerary are included, along with all meals in
Moshi and on the mountain. You will need personal spending money for souvenirs & alcoholic drinks, plus your
tips for the crew, extra snacks, and any additional travel you take part in. We recommend somewhere
between $400 - $800.
CAN I BOOK MY OWN FLIGHTS?
You are able to book a land-only adventure through Rare Adventures, and meet our
team in Moshi before the climb. You can fly to directly to Kilimanjaro International
Airport (JRO), or fly to either Nairobi (NBO) or Dar es Salaam (DAR) and transfer to
Moshi.
Please see the BOOKING YOUR OWN FLIGHTS section for more information.

21: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?
At altitude, your body burns far more calories than at sea level. During the climb, we will have a dedicated cook
with the team , who will prepare fresh meals 3 times a day. Your meals will be high in carbs and calories,
consisting mostly of pasta, soups, stews and fruit. During the climb, you will become used to the guides and
crew encouraging you to eat as much as you can – even if you’re not hungry. This helps counter the effects of
altitude and increases your chances of success on summit night. It’s not unusual for some of our
clients to return from a climb saying they’ve put on weight rather than lost it! If you have any specific dietary
requirements, our team can cater for this. When signing up, you can specify your individual needs.
After the climb, we will be treated to a celebratory meal back at the hotel, where you can toast your success with
your team-mates and friends.
WHAT WEATHER SHOULD I EXPECT?
Mountain weather can be a law unto itself, and Kilimanjaro is no different. At lower
elevations, it will be warm enough to hike in a light shirt, while Barranco Camp and
above could see temperatures drop below freezing. During our summit attempt
temperatures will be at their lowest– potentially -20°C Please review the kit list in this
brochure for a guide on what to pack.
HOW MANY GUIDES AND CREW WILL THERE BE?
The group will be accompanied at all times by our head guide, who will have overall command of the climb.
There will also be a team of assistant guides, porters and the team cook.
During the summit attempt, we ensure a minimum ratio of 1 guide to every 3 clients. This ensures that should
anyone decide to turn back, there will be someone available to escort them back to Barafu Camp.
WHAT PAPERWORK DO I NEED?
You will need to obtain the following documents in order to travel to take part in the
Kilimanjaro climb:




A Tanzanian Visa
A Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (if spending more than 12 hours in Kenya)
A valid travel insurance certificate
A completed medical form (if you have declared any medical conditions)
We can provide you with the required documentation for your Visa application, and will provide a medical form
after you register for the trip (where required).

22: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CAN I RECHARGE MY PHONE / MP3 PLAYER DURING THE CLIMB?
Mount Kilimanjaro is a national park, and has very basic infrastructure. You will be camping each night on the
mountain, with no access to mains power. We recommend trying to conserve camera battery, and saving that
last bit of juice in your MP3 player for summit night. You can also buy a solar charger, which may provide some
extra power. Bear in mind that the cold temperatures at higher altitudes will drain your batteries much faster than
at sea level, so try to carry your personal electronic in an inside pocket to keep them warm.
CAN I SHOWER OR WASH CLOTHES DURING THE CLIMB?
Each morning our team of porters will bring some tea or coffee to your tent, along with
a bowl of warm water so you can have a wash. Facilities will be basic during
the climb, so we recommend packing some baby wipes to freshen
up along the way. Dirty clothes can be washed back at the hotel
in Moshi.
WHERE CAN I GET CASH OR CHANGE MONEY?
You can withdraw cash from one of the many ATMs in Moshi town. Please remember that your bank may
charge a transaction fee on this, sometimes as much as 5%. If you bring Sterling or Dollars, these can be
changed into Tanzanian Shillings at an exchange in Moshi, or at the hotel. Remember to tell your bank you will
be travelling.
CAN I LEAVE SOME LUGGAGE IN MOSHI?
If you are planning on travelling after the climb, and don’t want to take your clothes for this with you,
there are left-luggage facilities available at the team hotel in Moshi.
HOW MUCH BAGGAGE CAN I TAKE ON THE CLIMB?
During the climb, a porter will carry your main bag, while you will carry your day pack with your water,
snacks, camera and other personal items. Your main bag should weigh no more than 10kg, while we
don’t recommend carrying a day bag of more than 5kg. Please see our kit list for more information on what to
take.
IS TANZANIA SAFE?
Tanzania is one of the most welcoming countries in East Africa, and our itinerary is fully
risk assessed and regularly monitored. We always follow the advice of the British Foreign & Commonwelath Office (FCO) and other sources. For more information, see
https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tanzania
Avoid travelling on your own, or at night in larger cities. Petty crime can occur much like
anywhere in the world – so avoid flaunting expensive items such as cameras, jewellery
or mobile phones.

WHY BOOK WITH RARE?
We live and breathe adventure travel. We know that there are plenty of options out there when it comes to
arranging some R&R after your climb, and we know that it’s possible to save some cash by cutting a deal with
a local operator. While we may not be the cheapest when it comes to arranging a little you-time after the climb,
we guarantee that by booking with us, you won’t be left with any extra work or worries.
With a small amount of time to spend exploring Tanzania after you get off the mountain, we strongly believe that

25: DOING IT YOURSELF
As the departure date for your trip draws nearer, we know that your team may be looking to you for advice on
many things, among them independent travel and where to go. With so many options out there, it can be
difficult to know where to get the best deal and which is the best option.
If you have decided to book your own independent travel, we’re not trying to change your mind. However,
since the safety and wellbeing of you and your team are our number one priority, we do want to share some
best practice guidance with you.
We want you and your team have a hassle-free and enjoyable experience in Tanzania. Standards vary hugely,
and each year we hear horror stories of trips gone badly wrong. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of tour
operators - if you are arranging travel for the group yourself, you will take on liability for their wellbeing and
enjoyment. It pays to do your due diligence and check up on who you are handing over your money to!
Whether you chose to book with Rare Adventures or not, we want to make sure that every single person who
travels to Kilimanjaro on one of our trips has a positive experience out in Tanzania. We recommend that
everyone booking independent travel does so with a UK registered tour operator. This protects your booking.
If you do want to talk further about choosing a reliable operator and booking your independent travel, whether
you are booking with us or not, our team are only too happy to help.
INDEPENDENT TRAVEL CHECKLIST
Please refer to the following checklist if you decide to work directly with local tour operators

Tanzanian government. Ask to see certificates
Make sure they are insured - this includes insurance for all vehicles used
FIRST AID:
Check if all guides and crew are certified, and trained in first aid
LIVING WAGE:
Staff are treated well and paid a living wage. Low cost can mean low welfare
TATA REGISTERED:

equipped with seatbelts
Ask what will happen if the tour operator doesn’t provide the services you have paid for.
Will you be able to get your money back if something falls through?

from the window of our private bus you will catch glimpses
of daily life in Tanzania, stunning scenery and perhaps
some wildlife. After catching a ferry, we will arrive on the
island of Zanzibar and transfer to our beach resort for the
evening. Here you can walk on palm-fringed beaches,
breathe in the fragrant scent of cloves and swim in the
waters of the Indian Ocean.
DAY 6
This morning we will enjoy the sunrise over the Indian
Ocean one last time, before transferring back to Moshi.
Here we will check into our hotel, spending one final night
enjoying Tanzanian hospitality. The following morning we
will transfer to the airport for our flights home.

SAFETY NOTICE
Rare Adventures takes the safety and security of all of our clients very seriously. We work closely with our
teams in Tanzania, and monitor the latest travel advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. At present,
the FCO does not advise against travel to Zanzibar. Regardless, Rare Adventures advise anyone booking onto
the Safari + Zanzibar package to avoid visits to Stone Town– especially if travelling on your own or at night. We
also recommend that all visitors to Zanzibar familiarise themselves with local customs, and dress & behave appropriately at all times.
If FCO advice changes before your departure, Rare Adventures will make alternate arrangements for you time in
Tanzania, and offer a comparable trip extension. Please note that if FCO advice on travel to Zanzibar changes,
this could invalidate your travel insurance if you continue with your trip.
Rare Adventures offer all clients 24 / 7 support line and will be able to offer assistance where appropriate during
your time in Tanzania.
