Get Ready to Hop on the Road to Possibilities….
Rally Day, Sunday, September 8, at 9:30am marks the start of our journey through The Gospel of
Luke. Members and visitors are invited to catch up with friends, sample breakfast treats, enjoy a
good cup of coffee, and learn about every meaningful ministry of the church. With your map in hand,
leaders from many of our ministries will be ready to lend some direction on the road. They look
forward to meeting you and knowing you. What we do and how we live together at Selwyn reflects
what we believe in the One whom we worship.
All children will go directly to their Sunday School rooms. Pre-school children will go downstairs in
the Bowman Building. Elementary children will go upstairs in the Bowman Building.
Be sure to bring a side dish and a blanket for our Rally Day picnic after worship.

The Gospel of Possibilities, the study of Luke, begins on September 15. Guest scholar and
preacher, Dr. John Carroll of Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond will join EVERY adult in the
Fellowship Hall at 9:30am. You won’t want to miss this opportunity as Dr. Carroll shares with us an
overview of Luke, its themes, and context.
John T. Carroll is Harriet Robertson Fitts Memorial Professor of New
Testament and Director of the Program for Excellence in Teaching and
Learning at Union Presbyterian Seminary. He was called to the
seminary’s faculty in 1992, after serving for six years on the faculty at
Louisiana State University. After service as academic dean for ten
years, he returned to a full-time faculty role in July 2010. Professor
Carroll’s primary research and teaching interests include the Gospels,
the message and ministry of Jesus, early Christian apocalyptic
literature, theological interpretation of the Bible, and the intersections
between the Bible and contemporary culture and religious practice. He
has authored or co-authored five books. He is married to Maria Ramos
and they have a young son, Oscar James. He also has two adult
children, Andrew and Anna. A semi-professional musician, he is
principal trombonist for the Richmond Philharmonic and the Richmond Brass Consort and also
performs with the trombone choir of Virginia Commonwealth University. He plays baseball in the
Virginia Baseball Congress league.
All Sunday School lessons will be directly tied to the preaching text of each Sunday. So if you are
interested in joining a class, or are hoping to deepen your understanding of scripture, this is a series
you don’t want to miss.
Adult Sunday School classes resume in their classrooms beginning September 21, with our adult
team of teachers leading the way.

Peggy Jessup and I recently spent a delightful and meaningful Saturday
morning attending the annual Presbyterian Women's Leadership Training at
Ben Salem Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. We were met with warm and
gracious hospitality, a hearty breakfast and the company of women
throughout the Presbytery who came to learn how to be more effective
leaders in our churches. We were encouraged to examine "What's in Your
Toolbox" in order to define our roles and responsibilities. There were
sessions for Moderators and Vice Moderators, Secretaries and Historians,
Treasurers and Special Givings, Missions and Racial-Ethnic and other Issues,
Search Committees and Spiritual Nurture, and Circle Moderators and Bible
Study Leaders. We were sorry that we did not have enough members from
our church to attend all of the groups. Presbyterian Women have a more than
200 year tradition of meeting, praying and acting together in shared love of
God and it is our hope that more of our SAPC women will attend the next
gathering to make new friends and to learn more about the role of
Presbyterian Women in the church.
Nancy Bobbitt, PW Moderator
All women are invited to attend the PW's 26th Annual Fall Gathering at
Sharon Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 14. The theme this year is
"An Abiding Hope: The Presence of God in Exodus and Deuteronomy", and the
Bible study overview will be given by Carol Hassell, Chaplain at Sharon Towers.
Registration will begin at 8:30am and the program at 9:00am. If you are
interested in attending or would like more information, please contact
Nancy Bobbitt at 704-553-9356.
MISSION AND OUTREACH
FREEDOM SCHOOL PARTNERS WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
Freedom School Partners is one of three programs chosen from about 90 applicants across the nation to receive the
prestigious New York Life Excellence in Summer Learning Award. The annual award is presented to programs that
demonstrate excellence in accelerating academic achievement and promoting healthy development for low-income young
people, as measured by National Summer Learning Association's Comprehensive Assessment of Summer Programs.
"We are honored to receive this award in partnership with the Charlotte community, which has enabled us to serve families with
high-quality summer learning. Through a strong model that surrounds children with a community that believes in them, Freedom
School impacts children to ignite passion for reading and develop character strengths to make good decisions," said
Executive Director Mary Nell McPherson.

SELWYN CELBRATES 30 YEARS – OCTOBER 19, 2013
Habitat Charlotte is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this fall and Selwyn’s participation goes back almost that far. Beyond
working on the construction site, a variety of volunteer opportunities and activities are planned for all ages throughout the day
on October 19.
Our construction efforts will help build a house for Tashika Hall, her daughter Mycah who is ten and her son Mekhi who is 2.
Tashika is excited about her new home in Arvin Meadows where a number of other Habitat homes are being built creating a
great little community. Volunteers may sign up for a half day shift as well as for the full day.
Activities are planned for children and youth throughout the day and child care will be provided for those too young to
participate. The day will end with an evening meal and celebration.
Other opportunities to participate include:
• Working at either Restore location: Wendover Road or Wilkinson Blvd for a half or full day (must be 16 or older; those
14 or 15 may work along with a parent)
• Working at the Appliance Recycling Center (morning only; must be 18 or older)
• Preparing and/or delivering lunch to the volunteers on the job site
• Assisting with the children’s activities
• Helping prepare supper and the celebration of our day together
