Let’s Celebrate! All Are Welcome! In
celebration of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America’s 25th anniversary and the
unifying work we share as members of the
largest Lutheran Church in North America, we
are inviting the public to an evening picnic in
the park. The Fairbanks North Star Borough
is home to three ELCA congregations; Lord of
Life Lutheran Church in North Pole, Fairbanks
Lutheran Church and Christ Lutheran Church
in Fairbanks. These worship communities will
play host to an evening of picnic, play and
storytelling including a performance by the
prize-winning Fairbanks Red Hackle Pipe
Band (The band has been devoted to
promoting the Scottish arts and traditions in
the North, participating in public and private
events and welcome anyone interested in
learning about the bagpipes, Scottish
drumming, or traditional Scottish dance).
The E.L.C.A. is a church that is deeply
rooted — and always being made new.

Update from Council
on the Congregational Life Coordinator position
I would like to update you on the progress
regarding a Congregational Life Coordinator
position.
Based on the following criteria: the favorable
giving to date, the funding task force formation
and conversations that have been conducted,
and the verbal contributions to this position,
the council has been assured that this
congregation is in a position to secure a part
time Congregational Life Coordinator and has
approved Rachel Kristenson. This period is
for September through December 2013. We
will still continue going forward with the 3 year
pledge funding recommendation made by our
Task Force to help us sustain this position
with the hope of future funding of a full time
position.

Picnic in the Park!
continued from page 1
The Evangelical
Lutheran Church in
America is still
comparatively new
as a church body,
and yet our roots
are much deeper
than our 25 years
together. The taproot of our life extends
through the histories of predecessor
churches in the United States, through the
formative witness of the 16th century
evangelical reformers and their
confessional writings, to the Scriptures and
the word of Christ. Our life is in Jesus Christ.
We are deeply rooted in his word of
forgiveness and the promises of God’s
steadfast love and mercy. The word of
Christ dwells in us richly. God nourishes us
as one body in Jesus Christ with
companions from around the globe who
meet us at God’s table of grace.
...there is a new creation
Congregational Life Coordinator:
Rachel Kristenson

We are being made new every day. In Jesus
Christ we are not unchanged. What God
does in Christ is as radical as the death
and resurrection of baptism, where new
creatures in Christ rise to live “no longer
for themselves, but for him who died and
was raised for them.” God is bringing that
new creation to life among us in the
ministry of reconciliation. In that service
we no longer see each other as we did
before. We are no longer strangers,
competitors or enemies to each other. We
are beloved companions in one body,
restored to a communion where the rich
diversity of our experiences, wisdom and
abilities serve the common good in Christ.
The new creation in Christ rises to life
among us every day.
Mark your calendars, share the date and
come join the fun on September 8th,
4pm–8pm, at Pioneer Park’s Moose
Creek Shelter for the confluence of Interior
E.L.C.A. Lutherans and friends.
All are welcome—No Exceptions!

Rev’s Ramblings
Imagine if you will a pile of Legos – you
know the colorful plastic construction toys
that have been snapping together playfully,
creatively and educationally since 1958.
Now that you have the picture what would
you do if those pieces were beside you? My
guess is you
would snap a
few pieces
together. It
is almost
inevitable. I
recall yelling
at one of the
kids “hey pick up your Legos!”, after
embedding one under my bare foot. Even in
my grumpy, not for fun mood, I couldn’t
resist snapping a few pieces together.
Legos are attractive, brightly colored, they
come in various sizes and they host a
seemingly limitless array of creative
opportunities. Remarkably, if you had a
1958 version of this toy it would work
fabulously with one coming out of
production today.
So imagine again an assembly of brightly
colored, uniquely formed, people. Who
gather together faithfully, playfully and
creatively to grow together as Christian
disciples. Like the toy, people of God share
a interdependence with one another.
Albert Einstein, once stated “our task must
be to free ourselves by widening our circle
of compassion to embrace all living
creatures and the whole of nature in its
beauty.” In essence by opening our arms of
compassion we free ourselves from the
limited reach of one’s own self and
together “snap” the kingdom of God
grows. Okay maybe I went a little too far
with the snap metaphor but I do believe
we as people of God are called to grow
interdependently.
As Christ Grown disciples our
interdependence is most evident in our
worship. It is often that one of our
youngest illuminates the space, another
will share their musical talent
accompanying those gathered, who raise
their collective voices in a joyous
experience. Others will lead, read and
preach collectively our unity is greater than
any one part. How else are you living
interdependently?
Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “For just as
the body is one and has many members,
and all the members of
the body, though many,
are one body, so it is
with Christ. For in the
one Spirit we were all
baptized into one body—
Jews or Greeks, slaves
or free—and we were all of one Spirit.
Indeed, the body does not consist of one
member but of many.” May you pray and
grow interdependently with one another.
Together in Christ!

New Directory!
We are preparing to put out a new
Photo Directory. It will be in a
different format that should be easier
to print out new current editions as
needed instead of just once a year.
From September 1st through the
15th a print out of this directory
(without photos) will be on the
narthex Table. Please take a moment
and make sure your information is
current. At this time children are not
appearing on the print out. I am
trying to work out this bug but
definitely need to know that your
information is correct.
Thank you!

I am so excited to be filling the new position
of Congregational Life Coordinator! My
husband, Nels, and I have been coming up
to Fairbanks for the last 7 summers while
he fights forest fires (he flies a Convair 580
that drops retardant beside forest
fires). Over the past 7 years, we've
welcomed 3 beautiful children to our family,
Taus (age 6), Siri (age 4), and Jens (age
2). Also over the past 7 years, we've
progressively fallen more and more in love
with Fairbanks and with the community at
Christ Lutheran Church, especially. We've
been praying for God to direct our path and
to open doors for us in very clear ways. For
me, this job has been a very clear dooropening, and I am so humbled and in awe of
how great our God is.
I am a Lutheran pastor's kid who grew up in
the church (in Alberta and Iowa) and have
had seasons of strong faith and other
seasons of hard wrestling. Throughout my
journey of faith, I have had a passion for
serving others…if only to be able to share
the abundance of life and love that God has
shared with me. I've led youth groups,
taught confirmation, taught Sunday school,
led VBS, facilitated Bible studies, preached
sermons, played music, sung in choirs,
served on committees.
I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in
Violin Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy
from the Cleveland Institute of Music in
Cleveland, Ohio. I have played
professionally in several symphonies,
founded and taught in a Suzuki violin
school, and played and toured with a string
quartet. These experiences have provided a
wealth of opportunities to work
collaboratively with others and hone skills of
leadership and organization.
It's been through many of these experiences
that I've lived out my "call" realizing over
time that God calls each one of us in areas
that He's gifted us…not just a select few to
be pastors or "in ministry." It's so exciting
to me to discover how God has gifted each
of us and to find ways to put those gifts
into action. As the verse above states, we
ALL have been given gifts from the
Spirit. And why? For the common good…
for the health of others, within our church
doors and reaching out. Truly being the
Body of Christ to the world.
Empowering our "body of Christ" Lutheran
Church is how I see my role as
Congregational Life Coordinator. I see my
job as opening doors, making connections
between people, and being a very loud
cheerleader. :) Most of all, I see myself as
a person ready to learn. Ready to learn
about how Christ Lutheran Church works,
what makes each program and each
member tick, and how the Spirit of Christ is
manifesting itself in this place. I am
looking forward to getting to know each
one of you and finding out how we can
work together to share God's life-giving and
love-spreading message to all people.
From Ephesians 3, I echo this: "I pray that,
according to the riches of God's glory, he
may grant that [we] may be strengthened
in [our] inner beings with power through his
Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in [our]
hearts through faith, as [we] are being
rooted and grounded in love. I pray that
[we] may have the power to comprehend,
with all the saints, what is the breadth and
length and height and depth, and to know
the love of Christ that surpasses
knowledge, so that [we] may be filled with
all the fullness of God. Now to him who by
the power at work within us is able to
accomplish abundantly far more than all
we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in
the church and in Christ Jesus to all
generations, forever and ever. Amen."

Worship
If it is not critical that you have
your cell phone on during the
service we ask that you please
turn it off. We have discovered that
cell phone signals effect the
reliability of the slide presenter
(the computer tool that our
volunteer advances the slides
with). This can cause the slides to
be delayed and makes it
interesting for those who have
chosen to go paperless. Thank
you for your consideration!

Show and Tell
A kindergarten teacher gave her class a "show and tell" assignment. Each student was
instructed to bring in an object to share with the class that represented their religion. The first
student got up in front of the class and said, "My name is Benjamin and I am Jewish and this
is a Star of David."
The second student got up in front of the class and said, "My name is Mary. I'm a Catholic and
this is a Rosary."
The third student got in up front of the class and said, "My name is Tommy. I am a Lutheran,
and this is a casserole."

Good Grief
Our Resource Guide: Westberg, Granger E. (2011) Good Grief: 50th Anniversary Edition. Minneapolis, MN: Fortress Press
This classic offering will be our guide as we navigate and explore the emotional process of loss and grief. Granger’s work identifies stages of grief
that individuals encounter in this journey. Keep in mind these stages are seldom encountered in an orderly stage by stage progression. They serve
as navigational tools in this exploration and study of healthy grief- GOOD GRIEF! Meeting day & time to be announced!
