Adult Viewbook - Northwest Mississippi Community College
SUCCESS STARTS HERE.
So you want to stay close to home while you are working on a great academic
foundation for a four-year degree…without breaking the bank. Or maybe you are
looking for the fast track to getting the technical skills you need for a rewarding career
path. You’re in luck! An amazing, affordable education is just a short distance from
home at any of our five area locations or from home with convenient online classes.
Most adult learners like yourself started college years ago and were unable to finish
due to work and family responsibilities, never had a chance to start college or have
a college degree, and now wish to enter a different field of study, or take classes for
personal enrichment.
Whatever your reasons for attending, Northwest Mississippi Community College
welcomes you and is dedicated to your success, because success starts at Northwest for
students of all ages on any career path.
PERKS
for
ADULT STUDENTS
According to a report by the National
Center for Education Statistics, students
25 years old and older make up more
than 40 percent of the students enrolled
in colleges and universities in the United
States. Northwest offers opportunities
like evening, online and weekend classes
to serve adult learners effectively. Look
for programs that maximize your time
and will increase your earning potential.
Other perks of adult learner programs
include smaller class sizes, strong studentinstructor interactions and discussionfocused classes.
Updated technological and professional
skills enhance your career path and
create many exciting new opportunities. These skills also help alleviate your
concerns about competing in a global
marketplace. Going back to school can
provide you with a safety net for an
ever-changing job market.
College Fact
Northwest graduates earn up to 3x more money than those who only have a high
school diploma. With an average class size of 21 students, one-on-one attention from
instructors and high-tech classrooms, you can be sure you are on a path to success.

Making the
Returning to school can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Remember these helpful tips
when making the transition from the working world back to college life:
• Be patient, relaxed and focused when dealing with school-related people and situations.
•
Be aware of your surroundings. Take a campus tour and learn where buildings and offices are located.
•
Become familiar with school administrators. It will help you to know your financial aid adviser, admissions counselor and academic adviser.
•
Ask about your educational options.
•
Get involved. Take advantage of
study groups, clubs and organizations.
•
Be efficient and creative with your
study time. Utilize shorter time spans
to study rather than trying to set
aside two hours at once. Review
your notes at lunch or during a
down time.
•
Be flexible with your normal
routines. Don’t get stressed out over a
dirty house or an overgrown lawn.
Ask your family or friends to help
you out.
•
Be positive and enthusiastic about
your educational adventure.

Here’s a quick guide to making
sense of financial aid. Be sure to
pick up your in-depth guide to
financial aid at Northwest from
the Financial Aid Office after
you apply for admission or visit
northwestms.edu/financialaid.
HOW DO I GET FINANCIAL AID?
WORK-STUDY
You must FIRST fill out a Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.
fafsa.gov to receive any type of aid.
By filling out the FAFSA, you will have applied for
Federal Work-Study. If eligible, Northwest will help
you find a job on campus to help cover your cost of
attendance.
WHAT NEXT?
There are four different ways you can receive funds
to help pay for your education. They are listed
here, so find which one best meets your needs and
qualifications!
SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are handled through their departments, so
you should contact the department directly for try-out
information. Fill out scholarship applications on the
financial aid website before April 1.
6
GRANTS
By filling out the FAFSA, you have already applied
for Federal Pell Grant. Then go to www.ihl.state.ms.us
to fill out the application for the two grants available
to Mississippians.
LOANS
Students who still need assistance covering their
cost of attendance while in school can apply for
Federal Direct Loans that they must pay back after
graduation.
The U.S. Department of Education’s
College Affordability and
Transparency Center recently
named Northwest as one of the top
100 public, two-year colleges with
lowest net prices in the country. At
a fraction of the cost of the state’s
four-year colleges and area technical
schools, Northwest offers the best
value in higher education in North
Mississippi.
